Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars it is what it says it is...fundamental.......2000-11-02

This book is great in its written and graphic information about what is in a good set of drawings. I use it to teach construction documents for residential construction, but it also explains isometrics and perspectives. It includes well drawn examples my students can look at as well as specific instructions and examples of what should be included on each drawing. It covers arch, stuctural, and site drawings for both a residential and light commercial. I use it for a AutoCad drafting class because it works so well as a guide for either hand or computer drafting. it explains the Drawing Conventions for line types, material harthes and detail cuts. it has isometric examples to show how sections are cut thru the building. And it isn't too big or expensive.

      Book Description

A 16th century scholar Antonio Telesio probes ancient colour words and ideas, and foreshadows future trends. He lived at a time when he could discuss colour with Raphael, Leonardo and Titian. Although writing for his classics students, his chapters on the main twelve colours, might equally well have been placed around a renaissance palette.

        Book Description

This is a book about the way that artists--both writers and photographers--approach their subjects and the choices they must make in creating art from their perceptions of other people's lives and experiences.
For the photographer, Carol Shloss notes, these choices come at the actual moment when he stands before his subject, seeking to capture it in some way within the technical limitations of the camera frame. For the writer--particularly the writer who chooses to seek out others and to make art
from "opening up" to the presence of another person--the choices made are more hidden but nevertheless similar to the ones faced by the photographer: Shloss shows how the process of constituting a text and finding its material is in many ways like using a camera. Throughout, Shloss stresses the
significance of the relationship between artist and subject, noting, "Whatever its desired end, art is drawn out of separateness and...the artist's terms of engagement with his or her subject are manifold, with referents in fear and in hope, in desire, fascination and hunger."
Filled with fascinating glimpses into the ways both writers and photographers work, the book explores the links between the two in chapters on Hawthorne and daguerreotypy; Henry James and Alvin Langdon Coburn; Theodore Dreiser, Alfred Stieglitz, and Jacob Riis; John Dos Passos and the Soviet
cinema; James Agee and Walker Evans; John Steinbeck and Dorothea Lange; and Norman Mailer and World War II combat photography (especially that of Robert Capa and Margaret Bourke-White). Illustrated with some 40 photos, In Visible Light reveals in penetrating detail the values that underpin
literature and photography, demonstrating that "art and politics are of the same metaphysical substance."

                Book Description

The last quarter century has been marked by the ascension of neoliberalism--market deregulation, state decentralization, and reduced political intervention in national economies. Not coincidentally, this period of dramatic institutional change has also seen the emergence of several schools of institutional analysis. Though these schools cut across disciplines, they have remained isolated from and critical of each other. This volume brings together four--rational choice, organizational, historical, and discursive institutionalism--to examine the rise of neoliberalism. In doing so, it makes tremendous methodological strides while substantively enlarging our knowledge about neoliberalism.

The book comprises original empirical studies by top scholars from each school of analysis. They examine neoliberalism's rise on three continents and explore changes in macroeconomic policy, labor markets, taxation, banking, and health care. Neoliberalism appears as much more complex, diverse, and contested than is often appreciated. The authors find that there is no convergence toward a common set of neoliberal institutions; that neoliberalism does not incapacitate states; and that neoliberal reform does not necessarily yield greater efficiency than other institutional arrangements. Beyond these important empirical contributions, this book is a methodological milestone in that it compares different schools of institutionalist analysis by seeing how they tackle a common problem. It reveals a second movement within institutionalism--one toward rapprochement and cross-fertilization among paradigms--and explains how this might be furthered with benefits throughout the social sciences.

In addition to the editors, the contributors are Sarah L. Babb, Ellen M. Bradburn, Bruce G. Carruthers, Terence C. Halliday, Colin Hay, Edgar Kiser, Peter Kjaer, Jack Knight, Aaron Matthew Laing, David Strang, and Bruce Western.

                      Book Description

When it first appeared in 1992, this book became an instant must-read on the lists of new parents and family studies professionals alike. Its message is just as relevant, just as timely, and perhaps even more important today. As indicated in the new foreword, by John M. Gottman, and in the updates and new afterword provided by the authors, the transition to parenthood remains one of the most challenging periods in adulthood. Readers today will be rewarded, just as earlier readers have been, by the stories reported in the pages of this book and by the wise counsel of the authors who put those stories in context.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Couples Considering a Family.......2005-07-17

Despite the fact that this book is listed as a textbook and that it is a scientific study from the 70s, it is a delightful, insightful, and pertinent read for anyone considering having a family.

When I began thinking of kids, I was curious to know how it would affect me & my marriage. There are many books out there that talk about the woes of motherhood and how to be a good parent (and, trust me, I've read nearly all of them), but this is the only book I've read that deals with the changes parenthood has on a marriage. The Cowans clearly identify the types of decisions, relationships, and patterns that play into this change and how, as a couple, you can weather them. This book will really help couples visualize their future with kids-- I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars great book for parents & professionals alike.......2001-06-24

When Parents Become Partners does a wonderful job of being accessible to new parents and parents-to-be, while also providing well-researched information and recommendations for professionals who work with couples. Carolyn and Phil Cowan's research following a group of pregnant couples and a control group of couples who hadn't yet decided whether to have children is fascinating, and readers will certainly recognize themselves and their friends, family among the various "types" of couples that emerge. Given the enormous transition that takes place in a couples' relationship when a child is born, this book offers reassuring, realistic information about how to survive -- or help others survive -- the change.

5 out of 5 stars must read for the reality of parenting.......2000-04-05

This book is a study of 100 couples from pregnancy through their child's kindergarten years. It really put in perspective the challenges that one must meet to maintain a relationship and raise a child. It is not a how-to book (thank god) but studies of real people dealing with life. The conclusions not astonishing but interesting and occasionally surprising. I had trouble making the transition from lover-wife to mother-lover-wife and this book helped me to feel that I was not alone! A footnote: This is a scientific study, complete with graphs and charts. Although it is not dry and quite an easy read, the format might turn some people off. I still loved it!

                      Book Description

Is social capital the `missing link' in economics? In this vital new book, the authors argue that the `forgotten' production factor of social capital is as crucial in economic decision-making as the other more traditional factors of production such as physical, financial and human capital. They attempt to bridge the gap between theory and reality by examining the main factors that determine entrepreneurship, co-operative movements and the creation and destruction of social capital.

To address the question of how social capital is created and destroyed, the authors develop an interdisciplinary approach combining political science, economics, anthropology, sociology and history. They show how bridging social capital enforces personal contact and acts as a lubricator for human co-operation, whereas bonding social capital enforces distance between people, increasing mistrust and, consequently, transaction costs. They demonstrate how entrepreneurship can facilitate voluntary collective action and create inclusive forms of social capital. Crucial in this respect is that entrepreneurs are motivated not only by economic incentives but also by social motives. Applying historical and contemporary case studies, they identify the serious human and economic consequences that result when social capital is disregarded. The authors believe that the implications of such a discovery demand a re-evaluation of traditional economic theory.

This book will contribute substantially to academic and popular debates on social capital and will be an invaluable source of reference for all social scientists. It will particularly appeal to students and scholars of public policy, economics, sociology, political science, anthropology and history.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome contribution to public policy debates.......2004-10-05

The Creation And Destruction Of Social Capital: Entrepreneurship, Co-Operative Movements And Institutions by Gunnar and Gert Svendsen, applies the authors' scholarship in economics to scrutinize social capital as the "forgotten" production factor, in addition to physical, financial and human capital. Exploring how social capital is created and destroyed, in a combination of political science, economics, anthropology, sociology, and history, The Creation And Destruction Of Social Capital delves into case studies and notes that some of the most brilliant entrepreneurs were as motivated by social incentives as by the hunger for financial reward. A welcome contribution to scholarly economic and public policy debates, The Creation And Destruction Of Social Capital is written for advanced students yet offers insights critical to better understanding micro and macro economics alike.

A true conservation classic. Anyone who has visited Hawk Mountain will appreciate this book. The wholesale slaughter of the 20's and 30's of hawks passing over the Pennsylvania mountain is vividly described and will outrage any nature lover. Broun also poetically describes the beauty and solitude of life on the mountain in all seasons. Highly recommended! Stephen Rees. Abington, Pa.
