Book Description

Everything architects need to master AutoCAD(r)'s exciting modeling and rendering features.

When it comes to modeling and rendering with AutoCAD R13 and R14, this user-friendly book/CD package makes it easy to generate outstanding results. While it equips AutoCAD novices with the knowledge and skills required to create polished architectural drawings, models, and renderings, it also offers experienced AutoCAD users the information they need to use all of the program's outstanding new modeling, rendering, and animation features.

Rather than just explaining how the software works, Branko Kolarevic guides you step by step through increasingly complex exercises built around Andrea Palladio's Renaissance masterpiece, "Villa Rotonda." Coverage is divided into four sections covering 2-D drawing, 3-D modeling, rendering, and animation. Each section begins with an introduction to key theoretical concepts that is followed by a series of skill-building tutorials demonstrating these principles in action.

To help shorten the AutoCAD learning curve even further, the enclosed CD-ROM provides a library of all of the drawing, modeling, rendering, and animation steps detailed in the book. The CD is flexibly designed to allow users the freedom to focus on the supplied tutorials or to create their own designs based on the techniques described in the book.

Together, this book and the accompanying CD-ROM give architects and students the ability to explore the full potential of the most popular architectural CAD software in use today.

4 out of 5 stars perfect book for architects.......1999-08-16

Within a week I was making my first 3d architectural model with good results. This book is very good and avoids to be general: it is focused on architecture and that is a relief after seeing a lot of books which explain autocad features with examples from all disciplines (mechanics, etc), which tend to confuse time-needing architects and draftmen. I recommended it in full.

The tutorial about shadow rendering is good but I had some trouble getting the right result (Acad R14). There is a bug in Autocad render module when MS Windows is set to international settings, I lost a couple of days finding out the solution to this problem. I found it at the technical support page of Autodesk. In the book there is no mention to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to using Autocad.......1999-11-24

This is a great book. I am an engineer who has since gone into another profession in which clear and concise writing plays an important role. My drafting experience is from pre-CAD days and included 8 years of intermittent drafting to implement my own work. I have a current need to create architectural drawings for a large personal project for use by an architectural firm and have retained and purchased Autocad so that we could "speak the same language". I looked at a number of books to help educate me in this new field and purchased some of them. A number of these books deal with the nuts and bolts of the Autocad language, which I am now comfortable with. None of these books, however, have provided a usable and straightforward framework to help me implement the powers of Autocad to create architectural drawings. James Snyder's book does this, and it is by far the best I have used or looked at for this purpose. It is clearly written, the examples are helpful and goal oriented, and as a whole his book communicates the necessary elements of architectural drafting in an enlightening manner.

1 out of 5 stars pretty general book with not so great support.......1999-05-07

I thought this book was okay for someone starting out. there are basic exercises at the end of each chapter. the book claims to have on line support in the way of execises and/or examples but when I went to their website I found none that are useful.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not for the beginners, or for advanced users........1999-04-27

Author tried to cover everything in general. There are very few detailed examples. This book is like a summary for the uses of AutoCAD. It usually ended when you were just about to learn more in terms of one of the specific autoCAD features.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing re-packaging of other books........1999-03-03

I bought this book as a supplement to The Complete Reference AutoCAD 14, published by Osborne Press, which is an outstanding reference, in the expectation that AutoCAD for Architecture R14 would offer a more directed approach to learning CAD. It seems, instead, to be put together from other reference books, and not even carefully at that. The word "TEMPLATE" is spelled "TEMPLET" except when "TEMPLE" is used. I returned my copy.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for the learning autocad opperator.......1998-12-21

easy to read and to understand for the beginner into autocad architectural drafting. I have learned more than my class teaches me in autocad drafting.

    Book Description

Merseyside has one of the richest public collections of art in provincial Britain, much of it originally assembled in nineteenth-century private collections and then donated to public institutions by the owners. The essays in this booklet discuss four of the nineteenth-century collectors, men whose tastes in pictorial art ranged from old masters to the Pre-Raphaelites. One of the four also collected, on a large scale, ceramics and other decorative artifacts. These individuals commissioned the work of local artists, to encourage and support them. They also founded societies and institutions, partly in order to display their collections and thus educate the local public. The riches of the art they brought into Liverpool or their support generated in the locality was, inevitably, an expression of their personal wealth - riches in art indeed. But these particular individuals were more than merely avid collectors of lofty patrons. They held clear views about the social and moral value of art and about its contemporary "progress", views expressed implicitly in their collections and in two instances also in public statements.

      Book Description

Mesmerizing color, dizzyingly intricate patterns and mind-bending shapes are on display in this unique collection of underwater images by award-winning photographer and documentarian Dos Winkel.

Below the surface of the ocean is a world teeming with life, color, and motion. Dos Winkel's photographs introduce readers to an eye-popping experience that blends science and art, biology and design. Fantastically shaped corals take on endless variations from mountains to buildings to perfect spheres. Brightly colored vases and blankets of sponges litter the ocean floor. Tiny fish peer out with hypnotic eyes at the camera while anemones' languid tentacles seem to reach out of the page. Throughout the more than one hundred large-format images in this book, the mystery, beauty and pulsating life of the world's coral reefs is everywhere in evidence. Coupled with an informative text on the ecology of coral reefs, the photographs are an inspiration to anyone searching for colors and patterns in the world around us and a reminder that some of the wonders of the universe lie waiting to be discovered on our own planet.

This digital document is an article from American Journal of Agricultural Economics, published by American Agricultural Economics Association on August 1, 1999. The length of the article is 3656 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the supplier: A controversy in the discrete choice demand literature over the specification and interpretation of alternative-specific price coefficients in discrete choice demand models is discussed. A critical point raised by the study was an internal model test for consistency which can or cannot reject the equality of alternative-specific price coefficients. An underlying utility model which relaxes additive separability is seen as a potentially useful approach to interpreting models with differing price coefficients.

            Book Description

The utility maximization paradigm forms the basis of many economic, psychological, cognitive and behavioral models. Since it was first devised in the eighteenth century, numerous examples have revealed the deficiencies of the concept. This book makes a contribution to overcome those deficiencies by taking into account insensitivity of measurement threshold and context of choice. It covers classic theory as a special, context-free case and gives a systematic overview of new models of utility maximization within a context-dependent threshold as well as related preference and choice models. The second edition has been updated to include the most recent developments and a new chapter on classic and new results for infinite sets. The presented models will be helpful to scientists in economics, decision making theory, social choice theory, behavioral and cognitive sciences, and related fields.

ACCESS TO Money Income in the United States: 2002 Annual Demographic Supplement to the Current Population Survey on the Characteristics and Incomes of Americans puts one of the federal government's most valuable databases at your fingertips. It presents detailed tables of accurate and reliable socioeconomic data that are otherwise available only by combing through hundreds of pages of online spreadsheets.

The income data in this book were collected by the 2002 Annual Demographic Supplement to the Current Population Survey. These are the first demographic estimates produced by the Census Bureau that reflect results of the 2000 Census—that is, they take into account the 6 million additional people counted by the census. The 2002 data are derived from an expanded sample of households, which allows for more detailed estimates by race and Hispanic origin. Many tables, for example, include data on the socioeconomic status of Asians and Pacific Islanders, a group too small to be shown separately in previous CPS data releases.

Look for the companion report, ACCESS TO Poverty in the United States: 2002 Annual Demographic Supplement to the Current Population Survey on the Poverty Status, Health Insurance Coverage, and Pension Plan Participation of Americans.

              Download Description

The title may be a mouthful, but the data inside this book and its companion volume, Poverty in the United States, are pure gold for anyone who needs to know the incomes and characteristics of American households, families, men, women, and children. For more than 50 years, the Annual Demographic Supplement to the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey has been collecting data on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of Americans. Once released with great fanfare in fat, detailed reports, the numbers are now available only online in huge html tables, which some researchers have described as "maddeningly cumbersome and time-consuming." New Strategist has come to the rescue of busy researchers by recreating the report on Money Income in the United States. This 400-page book gives you the latest income data from the 2002 Current Population Survey (CPS), revealing Americans' demographic characteristics and financial status. The 2002 CPS numbers packaged in these books are updates of 2000 census data, the first to reveal the trends of this decade. They are also the first to reflect the census finding of 6 million more people than demographers had estimated. Also in each book you get a comprehensive CPS glossary, a description of CPS survey methodology, and comparisons of 1990 and 2000 census-based population controls. Bet you didn't know: The median income of the nation's 57 million married couples peaks among those aged 50 to 54, at $78,000. Among couples with earnings, the percentage in which the wife earns more than the husband has climbed from 16 to 24 percent over the past two decades. Twenty-two percent of households headed by Asian Americans have incomes of $100,000 or more. The median income of black men climbed 27 percent between 1990 and 2001, after adjusting for inflation. The 29 million Americans who live alone outnumber the nation's 27 million nuclear families (married couples with children under age 18 at home)

5 out of 5 stars Read this book before your baby is born!.......2000-05-12

I read this entire book while on pregnancy-related bed rest, and I know it directly contributed to my success in breastfeeding my son.

There is an ENTIRE chapter devoted to the first week of breastfeeding, an explanation of why so many new mothers find the natural art of breastfeeding so difficult and information on maintaining a good supply of milk.

The information on expressing and storing of milk is excellent. I work full-time and my eight month old has only had breastmilk (no formula supplements). Based on advice in the book, I built a nice supply of frozen milk before returning to work. I also opted for a more expensive pump -- which has saved me the cost of formula and allowed me to provide my baby with the best food available.

2 out of 5 stars Useful, but not the best book on nursing.......1999-07-09

I have used this book for three months, since the birth of my daughter, and it does have useful information. But the tone is quite strident, and there are better books available. My favorite is The Nursing Mother's Companion, by Kathleen Huggins.

5 out of 5 stars One Stop to Learn it All.......1999-02-19

As a first-time mom, I wanted one book that covered all the issues regarding breastfeeding, and this one does it perfectly. Written by a doctor, it's well organized and comprehensive (without being boring). Just skip the chapters that don't apply to you. Topics covered include: ALL of the emotional and health issues, for the baby and for you; the biology of the breast (yes, there is such a thing); weaning the baby; laws governing the workplace; general information about the different types of breast pumps; equipment you do and don't need; and a list of resources for more information. I highly recommend this book to anybody contemplating breastfeeding.

                    4 out of 5 stars Impressive........2003-09-05

Robert Leckie doesn't mince words. He writes in a rush. His writing is compact, succinct, and to the point yet he provides good detail for those events that warrant it. He does not waste time, yours or his.

This is a writer on a mission. His reader has no doubt where he stands. You will not find much gray here; he is a historian who sees cause and effect, black and white. He is focused, circumspect, acerbic, hilarious and truthful.

The result is that None Died in Vain is one of the finest single volume histories on the American Civil War. This book is not short or superficial. When you are done with Leckie's 658 pages, you will know what happened and why. You will know all the principle characters, the good ones and the bad ones who struggled for their respective sides.

This book is fun. This book is well written. This book is all you need to gain a very solid understanding of what occurred.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting War.......2002-04-22

None Died in Vain is the tale of the American Civil War. However, this book doesn't begin by plunging into the war as usual history books do; on the other hand, it starts before that. The first settings are of slavery in the south. Then it gradually introduces all the major characters-the people that would become heroes and leaders of their time during the war. The war then comes alive. The battles begin, and so do political arguments. Finally, after an exciting war, it ends with Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
I enjoyed this book because of the way the author makes the war become real. History books often tell of the Civil War in a monotonous way that could make me fall asleep. Or, the book opens great, but it becomes much too long. This book, on the other hand, starts off a bit boring, but as it launches into the war, it is history come alive. I love the way he describes the people's childhoods and grown-up days. It gives a nice background for each war hero. No other author has ever done that-they usually just tell what they are supposed to and end at that. The only flaw is the hardness. Sometimes I didn't understand what the author was trying to say, even after reading the same phrase to myself a couple of times.
My favorite part was the telling of the childhood of Jefferson Davis. I have often read books about his opposer, Abraham Lincoln, for I am a northerner. All of the books I read about the Civil War times is told from the point of view that displays Jefferson Davis as a bad guy, and not someone I'd like to know about. However, after I read about his life, I decided that he wasn't so bad after all-he was just another person doing what he thought was right. An in a way, he is great about sticking to what he feels is needed to be done. And I found out that Jefferson Davis's life is just as interesting as Lincoln's.

4 out of 5 stars The King of War History Strikes Again!.......2002-02-28

Robert Leckie is truly the King of the retelling of all American conflicts. In this effort Leckie tackles the American Civil War and does his usual superb job. Leckie has an easy flowing style that is very enjoyable to read, he keeps everything in a nice timeline so you can get a good feel of what is happening in the western and eastern campaigns. It is difficult to describe battles in print to people who were not there but Leckie does as good as job as there is in bringing the reader the horrors of war. He also gives a short biography of some of the principal individuals in the conflict to provide a basis of how they came to hold places of distinction. This is a good read for everyone interested in the American Civil War.

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable introduction to the Civil War.......2001-11-09

I read Leckie's "Delivered From Evil," a few years ago and was blown away with the amount of WWII knowledge packed into one book. When I heard about "None Died in Vain," I was eager to dive into it and find the same results as "DFE," but unfortunately, I didn't quite get it.
Not that I didn't enjoy Leckie's take on the Civil War but when I finished, I found myself asking for more. "None Died in Vain", which is written in Leckie's very interesting and reader-friendly, borderline-novel style is a good general overview of the Civil War but it does not dive as deep into the conflict as I had hoped. A good example of this is that he wrote 47 pages on the Battle of Gettysburg, one of, if not THE, most important battle in the war. Yet for the Battle of Chickamauga, Leckie covers the military operations of that fight in just three pages even though it happened to be the bloodiest two-day battle in the entire war! He also glosses over the Battle of Brandy Station, one of the largest Cavalry conflicts in history and skips entirely over major Western battles like Brices Cross Roads and Tupelo. I got the feeling at the end of the book that he was ready to wrap things up too (he wrote 135 pages on events happening before Ft. Sumter, a great lead-in, but wrote just 29 pages about events after Appamattox with nothing on reconstruction).
Examples like this kept me frustrated while reading the book but Leckie's engaging style of writing still kept me entertained. Leckie does hit all the major points and like in his other books, gives brief biographies on all the major players.

I would suggest this book to anyone who is a huge Leckie fan and can't get enough of his writing or to someone who has always asked the question "What exactly was the Civil War all about?" and wants to read just one book about the subject but has more class than buying an "Idiot's Guide to the Civil War". For someone who wants more on the Civil War, look into works by Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton or James McPherson.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Civil War synopsis........2001-05-21

I am a dedicated reader of Robert Leckie's works, and I was not disappointed with this Civil War history. The book weaves the political, military and social threads of the era into a fine literary fabric, though the real strength of this and of all Mr. Leckie's works is the author's ability to re-animate the characters. With few exceptions, he is even-handed and non-judgmental and allows the reader a wonderful intimacy with the famous, the infamous and the anonymous alike.
