Okay photography, but not a 40-year retrospective.......2000-10-01
The photography is decent the majority of the time. There are some really weird photos where you can't see a thing, and there is more than one occasion where there is nudity. I would not call this great photography, and I wish it had been more focused on the couture and not the models.
The title of this book is Yves Saint Laurent: 40 Years of Creation, but the main focus of the book is the designer's work from the 1990s. There is very little from earlier. This was fine with me as I prefer the work from the 90s, but, if you want a true retrospective on ALL his work, this book is not it.
Congratulations for a great retrospective on YSL.......1999-07-23
What a good idea to have shown the relation between this great designer and those great photographers since he was the first couturier that understood the power of photography in fashion. What I liked the most is the mixture between those young artists and their predecessors. I recommend this book to anyone who loves fashion, photography and the way these two interact.
A book for photography fans, not for fans of YSL........1998-10-23
I was very disappointed in this book. I expected a deluxe photographic retrospective on the work of one of the greatest fashion designers of this century. Instead, the focus of the book is on "fashion photography" and not on YSL's work. The photos are "artistic," which means they are often murky, blurry, dark, weird, and even violent (especially two Terry Richardson photos of "dead" models--one made up to look as though she were slashed to death).
This book will not satisy anyone who wants a good look at YSL's output over the past 40 years. If you are a fan of "fashion photography," you might like this book. If you are a fan of YSL, you will not. I wish I hadn't bought it.

Book Description
Unless action is taken, the developing world will face recurrent problems of food security and conflict. This volume provides a summary and perspective of the field of land resources and suggests improvements needed to conserve resources for future generations. Coverage provides an authoritative review of the resources of soils, water, climate, forests and pastures on which agriculture depends. It assesses the interactions between land resources and wider aspects of development, including population and poverty. It provides a strong critique of current methods of assessing land degradation and placing an economic value on land. It should be read by all involved in rural development, including scientists, economists, geographers, sociologists, planners, and students of development studies.

Book Description
Franchise Bible is equally useful for the prospective franchisee or franchisor. This complete and practical guide, including sample documents and checklists, explains in detail what the franchise system entails and the precise benefits it offers. The book will familiarize you with the terms and conditions of a franchise agreement which both franchisees and franchisors should be aware of, and what information you must provide if you are to be a franchisor.
Franchise Bible helps you:
* Determine whether you would make a suitable franchisor or franchisee.
* Decide if your best course of action is to buy a franchise or start your own (unfranchised) business.
* Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the franchise marketing system.
* Familiarize yourself with the offering circular and what items it should contain.
* Consider expanding your current business by franchising.
This book will save you from making costly errors by explaining in detail what a franchisee should expect from a franchisor in the way of services and support, and what the franchisor's contractual obligations are to the franchisee. The book will familiarize you with the franchise process, saving you money on attorney and consulting fees, since you will be able to do much of the preliminary research yourself. In addition, the book provides checklists and forms to help the prospective franchisee rate a potential franchisor. Franchise Bible encourages the potential franchisor or franchisee to carefully consider whether he or she is personally suited to this unique and challenging way of doing business.
Effective January 1, 1995, the Federal Trade Commission implemented the new Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC), effective in all 50 states. All franchisors will need to update their offering circulars as they come up for renewal. Franchise Bible deciphers this new document for you, and gives you guidelines, checklists, and a comprehensive questionnaire to save every franchisor money in updating or rewriting his or her offering circular.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview for both sides of the franchise equation.......2004-02-15
This is a good book if you want to learn more about franchising in general. It has a lot of great information in it. It is a little bit of a "dry read" compared to other books on the topic I have read.
It's strength and weakness is in that it provides highlights for both franchisee or franchisor but does not go into great detail for either. If anything it has a slant towards those wishing to franchise and existing business. If you are looking for a book that is in depth from either perspective I would not start with this one.
SUPERB.......2000-08-04
This is the publication you should read if you are interested either working for another business, starting your own or starting a franchise. Either way, you should learn how the franchising concept works. As a researcher of McDonalds, I totally believe this is the idea whose time has come. Franchising will definitely be the wave of the future from time to come. Read this book as a student of mind control and recovery - you will not be sorry.

Book Description
The historic long term economic interconnections of the world are now universally accepted. This collection of essays represents a reframing of these global economic and political links. In the light of a non-Eurocentric perspective, The World System argues for the interconnectedness of historical patterns over 5,000 rather than 500 years. In doing so, the book undermines the primacy claimed for Europe as the major agent of economic change, an issue with implications far beyond the realm of history. With an important forward by William H. McNeill and contributions by Immanuel Wallerstein and Samir Amin, The World System is now available for the first time in paperback, making sure the arguments are accessible to students of world history, international relations and a variety of related disciplines.

Book Description
The World System confronts the idea that historic long term economic interconnectedness did not begin, as some say, 500 years ago, but rather 5,000. The editors have gathered an impressive array of scholars involved in world system analysis, and include both statements and responses to the idea of a "one world system". Contributors such as Immanuel Wallerstein and William H. McNeil take up the various aspects and issues created by these controversial and challenging theories.
The World System is addressed to a wide range of disciplines, for whom such a radical thesis may have important implications. The book broadly poses a challenge to Eurocentric world history, and offers a humanocentric alternative analysis.
Customer Reviews:
A well documented review on world systems........2000-04-01
This is a very good collection of articles on the historic long-term interconnections of global history. It is an attempt to understand human history as a whole by coping with diversity of tongues and concepts that different cultures have used to guide their conduct and understanding of the world. The principal prisms of interpretation are the center-periphery analysis, with a focus on hegemony and rivalry within the structures. The contemporary world has a history of more than 5,000 years with the rise to dominance of Europe and Western civilization as a recent and plausible passing event.

Product Description
Based on twenty years of research in formerly secret archives, this book reveals for the first time the full significance of War Plan Orange--the U.S. Navy's strategy to defeat Japan, forumulated over the forty years prior to World War II. It recounts the struggles between "thrusting" and "cautionary" schools of strategy, the roles of outspoken leaders such as Dewey, Mahan, King, and MacArthur, and the adaptation of aviation and other technologies to the plan. The book shows that the strategy of Plan Orange was the basis of prewar U.S. naval development in training, ship and aircraft design, and amphibious and tactical thought.
War Plan Orange is the recipient of numerous book awards, including the prestigious Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Naval History Prize.

Filling in the Blanks.......2007-09-01
Wartime policy in the Pacific was always a mystery to me. Miller's book allowed to make some sense of locations and campaigns, that these were not chosen at random or on the fly. A complementary work to such modern classics as At Dawn We Slept.
Research at its best........2007-08-14
War Plan Orange dispels many of the myths surrounding a supposed plan for an Armageddon type clash between the Navies of the USA and Japan before WW2 actually broke out.
The Author is a little confusing at first. He has a tendency to leap from this year to that, then back to here and over to there, with a side reference to some other period. There were sections of the first few chapters where I was not sure if I was in the right time continuum. However he eventually settles down about half way through, after which things proceed in a far more orderly cronological order.
That is not to say valuable information in the first half, is not able to be gleaned from this excellent work. It can be. You just might need to keep reminding yourself which year he is currently addressing.
Over all the author tells a story of contingency planning. All nations engage in it just in case something happens. It also enables naval planners to determine the sort of ships required in the event of a future naval conflict.
While the contingencies are often battered about by different lines of thought from a whole range of naval people as the years progress, one thing is clear. The US Navy worked out what their likely requirements were if Government sent them to war. This came in the form of permanent bases, advanced base equipment, ships and stores. But these issues then also required a means by which to deploy those things and where.
The author has done some incredible research and unearthed volumes of reports that must have been gathering dust for decades.
In doing so he shows how a navy goes about planning for what might be required of it. Even when peace reigns, these things have to be allowed for, but the longer it reigns, the more people get to effect the plan. Yet over all, the things they forsee, and the plans they make, do in many cases, turn WW2 in the Pacific into an emulation of what these men had thought out during previous decades.
Cleverly, the author concentrates on the US Navy. There are no side distractions into what the Japanese thought. Even when it turns into plan Rainbow to reflect more countries involved, plus allies, he remains true to his course. Therefore, although armed with 'hindsight', the reader finds himself in the position of the planners as they must have wondered, what the other side were wondering. We know what eventually happened. We do not know from this book, how the Japanese side of it was planned. So the reader is as in the dark as the planners were, which I felt produced a good element into the study of this particular part of history.
The book is strongly recommended for any naval historian, or indeed any historian looking at the land side of the Pacific war. For those who like a bit of lighter reading, it may prove a bit too heavy. But I would still advise those with an interest in WW2 in the Pacific, to give it a try. You will find it incredibly informative.
Rigorous Research a fantastic read.......2007-04-10
Interesting and riverting, presented in straight and easy to read manner. Valuable lessons for the future.
this is how we did it.......2007-01-10
This is a very detailed study of the evolution of US war planning from the turn of the century through the end of WW2. It is a great book for students of strategic level planning
Who said we weren't prepared!.......2001-12-09
Edward Miller's "War Plan Orange" is a well researched and effectively written book on the United states Navy's plan of action against a naval threat from the Empire of Japan. He covers the plan from it's initial design, through it's many changes, and through the point where it was "taken off the self" and executed.
While the sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor might have destroyed a large portion of the physical fleet. One thing they could not touch was this plan and through it's use as the foundation for the US response, the defeat of Japan was assured. Let's hope that we still make plans that prove this effective.
