Book Description
In 1980, Los Angeles historian Jim Heimann wrote a book about the oddball roadside architecture that has dotted the American landscape since the advent of the auto. Published by Chronicle Books as California Crazy, it stayed in print for nearly 20 years. Finally, here is the greatly expanded new edition of that sought-after classic. California Crazy and Beyond is packed with madcap restaurants, motels, service stations, and many other businesses shaped like hot dogs, animals, airplanes, pianos, and other architectural anomalies. Over the years, Heimann's continued research has uncovered a multitude of new pictures and forgotten buildings. With over 380 photographs and an illuminating text that tracks the subject well beyond the bounds of the West Coast, California Crazy and Beyond is an authoritative document of a style born in America and spread to all corners of the world.

Fun-tecture.......2002-04-18
I bought this book when it first came out in 1980 and I recently noticed that a new addition was available. Well worth getting too, more pages, extra subjects (cars for instance) updated bibliography and a sparkling new layout. Author Heimann feels that architectural historian David Gebhard's term 'Programatic' does not quite capture the flavor of these buildings, I propose calling them FUNTECTURE.
A new chapter, not in the original book, is 'Current Condition' which has twenty-two photos, in color, of buildings now standing and they all look very smart and well cared for but wait till you see the photo on page 169, this shows the amazing headquarters of the Longaberger company in Newark, Ohio, famous for making baskets and that is exactly what the building looks like, seven stories high with two carrying handles reaching up to the sky...only in America! You can see and read about this lovely bit of whimsy on their website.
You will really enjoy this book if you are a fan of roadside America, especially if you have lived in California and maybe remember some of the weird buildings that are no longer around.

Fun and Informative.......2001-07-07
This book is a must-have for those of us who love the lure of the road and all it has to offer. It's sad that a lot of these wonderful icons of Americana are vanishing, but it's great that people like Jim Heimann are preserving it for future generations to see. I highly recommend this book -- lots of great photos and interesting history in a nicely organized book!

Practical reference book.......2004-06-22
While I prefer traditional Italian maiolica to contemporary, this book is still excellent. It is filled with glaze recipes and practical technical information. This book is worth it's purchase price just for it's 8 page Troubleshooting chapter.
Spectacular!.......2000-05-16
I recently purchased four or five books on ceramics. This was by far my favorite. The beautiful work is inspiring and well presented with clear how to information. He even shows what brushes he uses for each and every stroke.
Wonderful features on many prominent potters!.......2000-01-05
I found that the artwork is beautifully featured in this book and many of today's finest potters' work can be viewed. In particular, I truly enjoyed Ostermann's feature on up and coming Ontario potter-Richard Mund. His beautifully decorated work makes this book a new favorite for reference, inspiration and knowledge.

Broad-based growth is one of the four pillars of the Nicaraguan Government's Poverty Reduction Strategy. Living standards of the rural poor will continue to depend largely upon agriculture. This study takes stock of major developments in Nicaragua's agricultural sector and argues that broad-based growth can be promoted by strengthening agricultural competitiveness. Export growth is the key, requiring immediate action within a coherent strategy. The case of coffee illustrates the proposed strategy. This report also identifies productivity constraints in rural factor markets, suggesting medium-and-long-term solutions. It concludes with a review of the issue of risk management and with descriptions of some promising pilot projects.
Book Description
"Many books have been written on Islamic financial markets but this is the first book to introduce all of the essential topics in one volume. The authors, two of the best known authorities in Islamic economics, finance and banking, also incorporate valuable examples and practical discussions that will offer better understanding of this emerging market. They should be congratulated for providing students and practitioners with a text that places Islamic finance and banking squarely within the context of Islamic teachings and modern finance and banking practices."
--Hossein Askari, Iran Professor of International Business and International Affairs, George Washington University
"An Introduction to Islamic Finance is an excellent introduction to the principles of Islamic finance. The authors provide necessary background to the subject, as well as succinct description of the main products and processes. This book will be of value to anyone looking to invest or issue in the Islamic finance markets."
--Professor Moorad Choudhry, Department of Economics, London Metropolitan University
"Islamic financial markets have made remarkable progress during the last two decades and this burgeoning growth has increased the appetite for financiers and bankers to understand more of this emerging market. Incorporating useful references to historical practices and financial instruments used by Muslim societies, An Introduction to Islamic Finance will serve as a very useful resource for anyone interested in the subject. The authors should be congratulated for their insightful and practical contribution."
--Professor Rifaat Ahmed Abdel Karim, Secretary-General, Islamic Financial Services Board
"Considerable experience in dealing with finance and its role in development have gone into this timely publication. The insights offered by the authors should be especially helpful to Islamic banks and financial institutions in redesigning risk-management and diversification of portfolios. This makes An Introduction to Islamic Finance one of the best books on the topic so far."
--Dr. Mohammad Nejatullah Siddiqi, Professor of Economics, Islamic Economics Research Center, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah (Retired)

Book Assessment.......2007-02-08
The book does not provide deep enough background on the origins and philosophy of so called Islamic banking, particularly since banking as we know it did not exist in the days of the Prophet. The extrapolation from financing camel caravans to managing mutual funds just stretches credibility
As for the modern part, it strives to give an Islamic gloss to what are purely Western banking and financial concepts.
All in all, a disappointing book

Book Description
Islam has a very specific approach to commercial transactions, the law of contract, interest charges, indeed to the very nature of property. For financial institutions operating in an Islamic environment, or seeking to meet the requirements of communities committed to Islamic law, this poses a variety of problems. This important book investigates how such a challenge can be met in practice.
The authors investigate the way Islamic banks work within different economic, financial, social, legal and religious environments. They take the reader through the basic principles involved, the issues that arise, and the difficulties that are often encountered.
Drawing on detailed studies of Islamic banking in London, Jordan, Turkey, Malaysia and Pakistan, they provide an understanding of how complex Islamic concepts impact upon the use of financial instruments, commercial priorities and services. Relationships with central banks, comparative analysis of financial statements and the role of Islamic banking in a development context are also covered.
Islamic Banking will be essential reading to all those involved in the setting up and running of Islamic banking units in western countries, and a key resource for students of economics in the international arena.

Buku penting bagi Praktisi Bank Islam Indonesia
.......1997-04-21
Bismillahirrahmanirrahiim
Saudara,

Book Description
This book reviews the Islamic opposition to interest and assesses the feasibility of a non-interest financial system in the light of current economic theory. The Islamic critique of interest is set against a discussion of the methodology of Islamic economics and the opposition to interest within the Judeo-Christian tradition. The range of Islamic non-interest financial contracts is then detailed along with a review of the performance of Islamic banks to date; a model of the allocation of finance within a non-interest system is then presented. Assessment of the issues raised is made within the context of economic literature concerning debt versus equity finance; this includes an examination of banking instability and the business cycle, the determinants of levels of saving and the implications for public finance. The conclusions outline the advantages and disadvantages of a theoretical case for the prohibition of interest, and draws practical lessons for contemporary Western economies.

Those who share television newsman James Lehrer's passion for the Civil War will be thrilled to encounter this graceful, deftly written novel about a U.S. Parks Department archaeologist investigating the mystery of a murdered Union officer whose remains are discovered in an unmarked grave near Antietam, the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in history. Don Spaniel's curiosity about the circumstances of the soldier's death is ratcheted up several degrees when it turns out that the ID disk found in the grave belongs to another solider from a different regiment, whose body is buried elsewhere. And when a woman from the historical society of a small town in the Midwest gives Spaniel a document that refers to the murder, along with a warning that some stories are better left untold, he swings into high gear to solve a century-old mystery. The pace of this novel is so slow it may put some readers to sleep, and the protagonist is more of a talking history book than a flesh-and-blood character, but real Civil War buffs probably won't mind at all. --Jane Adams
Book Description
On a ridge overlooking Burnside Bridge—the focus of the Battle of Antietam—souvenir hunters find the unmarked grave of an unknown Union officer.
Don Spaniel, an archeologist in the National Park Service, is called in to examine the remains. He soon discovers that the officer was murdered and that his identification disk could not possibly belong to him, since its rightful owner is buried elsewhere. So who was this officer? Where did he come from? And why was he killed?
Spaniel’s obsessive investigation leads not only to his reliving the horrible carnage that occurred at Burnside Bridge over a century before, but to the true identity of the Union officer and the reason why another body resides in his grave in a small New England town.
In a swift narrative deftly combining the past with the present, Jim Lehrer has created an engrossing story that will appeal to a wide variety of readers.

"From opening salvo to final shot, No Certain Rest reads like Antietam: blood-soaked, fast-charging, filled with twists, and as hauntingly irresistible to a Civil War buff as the battle itself."
TONY HORWITZ, AUTHOR OF CONFEDERATES IN THE ATTIC
Customer Reviews:
Not bad........2006-08-27
No Certain Rest tells the story of a body found (present day) near Burnside Bridge in Sharpsburg Maryland. Civil War relic hunters notify the National Park Service, and an investigation begins to discover whose body has been uncovered from the 1862 battle of Antietam. As the story unfolds, with flashbacks to 1862 through a letter found in an archive, the events that unfolded at the Bridge in 1862 begin to have consequences for the present. That's all I'll say for the storyline, but I would add that while the story is enjoyable it is also predictable. Readers will probably have the story figured out by half-way through the book--yet you will still want to finish reading it to discover if your guess is right...or if there is still one more twist. If you are interested in the Civil War, it's worth spending an afternoon with this book.
Not Just a Civil War Novel, but a Darn Good Read.......2006-03-19
This is a very interesting novel that captures both the ferocity of the Battle of Antietam and intensity of feelings that people have about the Civil War. Although at times No Certain Rest feels like it was written by an intellectual news commentator for PBS (which Lehrer is), the book is easy to read and the story becomes increasingly intense as the protagonist gets closer to his conclusion. The ending also catches you by surprise. You don't have to be a Civil War buff (I'm not) to enjoy this book, merely a fan of well-written mystery/suspense novels.
love it.......2006-03-10
I read it while living in Virginia near many of the Civil War battle fields, I found this story extremely interesting. It put a very different twist on the battle.
DISAPPOINTMENT AND THEN SOME.......2006-01-05
Jim Leher's novel was a great disappointment to me. An individual so accomplished, articulate and engaging left all that behind when he sat down to write this novel. The story line could have been interesting but I was greatly distracted by the simplistic character development and somewhat implausable series of events. If Lehrer chooses to pursue this avocation I urge he seek ways to enliven his characters and develop a more pictureque manner of writing. Frankly, this novel was less gripping than a poorly cast and directed high school drama.
Mr. Lehrer ain't no Hemingway........2005-03-03
I love Jim Lehrer's news program, and I had heard that he was a prolific writer, and I am a passionate student of Civil War history, so you can imagine my delight when I saw this book for sale at the giftshop at the Antietam National Battlefield, having just visited Burnside's Bridge. The cover blurb was fascinating, the story looked fun -- and the book is 10% off at the park!
Alas, I must add my voice to the chorus here. Mr. Lehrer ain't no Hemingway. The story begins well, then rapidly begins introducing one-dimensional characters and implausible plot twists. I finished the book wishing that the story had ended a chapter or two earlier.
A final comment: if Mr. Lehrer wanted to deeply address the subject of futile infantry charges, ordered by incompetent commanders and made inevitable by gaps between technology and tactics, there are far better historical places where he could have done so -- all within easy reach of Mr. Lehrer's home in Washington. Frederickburg and Cold Harbor come to mind, but I'm sure there are many others.

The Battle of Little Bighorn: The site of Little Bighorn has been researched like no other American battlefield. Using the results of this recent scientific research, the book will peel away the myths about Little Bighorn, revealing that there was no 'last stand' just as there were few bows, arrows or tomahawks.
The Battle of Hastings: We all know what happened in 1066 - or do we? Only one contemporary account, of a few lines, survives about the Battle of Hastings. Had Harold's army really marched from Stamford Bridge? Was Harold killed by an arrow through the eye? And where did the battle take place? Almost all our knowledge of 1066 rests in myth and illusion.
The Battle of Agincourt: Agincourt was a triumph of the English long bow - 'the machine gun of the Middle Ages' - over French knightly military tactics. But it was seventy years since the English under the black Prince had devastated the cream of the French aristocracy at Crecy. Had the French really learned nothing in the intervening years?
The Spanish Armada: It's almost legendary. The story of the Spanish Armada is a wonderful one. English heroism and Spanish incompetence plus bad weather have always been blamed for the Armada's failure. Now marine archaeology and recently discovered Spanish documentation are casting the reasons for the Armada's failure in new light.
Waterloo: In history Waterloo has always been told as the great triumph of Britain's greatest general, Wellington, and the victory of British fire power over the French. But new discoveries suggest a quite different story...
The Charge of the Light Brigade: The Charge of the Light Brigade lives on in history as one of the most pointless andexpensive in terms of loss of life actions in history. The book will put it in its proper context of just one of three actions that took place that day and reveal that pointless and unsuccessful as it was, fewer than a quarter of the 'Six Hundred' actually died; and Battlefield Detectives reveals what were the real killers that day.
Gallipoli: The most public disaster of the Allied campaign in WWI. The book will investigate why - at the height of the campaign - both sides were losing many more men to disease than to enemy fire, and why the leadership did not take this into account. And the true story of the 12th Norfold, who disappeared in mysterious circumstances on 12 August.

"One arrowhead does not make a battle.".......2005-11-26
This is one of those books you often see published anong with or after a TV Series.Unfortunately, because of time constraints, things have to be glossed over, and on top of that, to command an audience, things have to be kept very general and simple. Also, this book, in only 255 pages, covers 7 major battles,so nothing but a brief overview is possible.
What is attempted here, and I think fairly well considering the constraints,is to utilize present day invesgative procedures and return to the original battle sites and prove what really happened and why.
After having read this book, one will look at these battles in a very different way.It is nothing new to read different accounts of an event and come away with very different impressions;and for a variety of reasons.Everyone has had the experience of witnessing an event, then reading about it next day;and asking oneself,"Is that the same event I was at?".So,it,s little wonder, reading about battles, many years after they took place, gives wildly differing accounts.
Some time ago I read a book on the Spanish Armada. It was portrayed totally different from what I remember in school history.Rather than a brilliant British naval victory it was one humongeous fiasco on the part of the Spanish king with the weather being the main reason the armada was destroyed. The king set it all in motion, without either himself or the leader having any plan or object defined. It was not an amarda of fighting ships and trained sea fighters, but a mish-mash of ships rounded up around the Mediterrean ,many not even fighting ships and carry a mixed bag of army types. On top of that the King put a man in charge who was totally incapable, and knew it;and on top of it all didn't want to lead it.
Once this hodge-podge got in the English Channel the weather took over and storms wrecked most of the ships.A couple of years ago, I was in Galway,Ireland and saw where a bunch of Spanish Armada survivors managed to get ashore after their ship had been wrecked in a storm. They were rounded up and put to death. This was just a ship lost in a storm, being sailed by a crew way in over their heads, trying to get back to spain.
So,I wasn't too surprised when I read Mason's ideas on what really happened.
The book is a good read for someone who is looking for light overage. For someone who wants more information an any one of these 7 battles,I am sure there's thousands of books waiting for you.The author even gives you lots of titles to get you started.
Nonetheless,an interesting way to look at history.
The Fog of War.......2004-09-26
Everyone who is interested in military history has read about Hastings, Agincourt and Little Bighorn and has some idea of what happened at each of those battles. But what if the history books are wrong, or at least a bit off? What if the key elements of these and other battles are actually different from what we've come to believe?
Wason explores the myths and realities about several major battles, looking at each with the aid of modern archaeology, psychology, meteorology and other disciplines. Among the topics explored:
What were the management styles of William the Conqueror and King Harold, and how does that help to explain who won at the Battle of Hastings?
Was Agincourt really decided by the vaunted long bow, or did the English victory have more to do with crowd dynamics and the viscosity of French mud?
Was the Spanish Armada lost because the fleet's navigators mis-judged its position by hundred of miles? What role did English guns and ship design play in the outcome?
Was Marshal Ney fit for command on the day of Waterloo, or did combat fatigue put an end to The Hundred Days?
Did Custer's batallion fight a disciplined "last stand" against an overwhelming force of Native Americans, or was it quickly routed by a healthier, better-equipped foe?
"Battlefield Detectives" offers an interesting exploration of these and other engagements, including Balaklava and Gallipoli. All in all, a well written and enjoyable critique of the myths surrounding these famous struggles.
If you enjoy reading about what modern science can tell us about old battles, consider reading Hugh Miller's "More Secrets of the Dead" (which provides an interesting perspective on the Battle of Isandlawana), the "Two Men in a Trench" series, and "The Battle that Stopped Rome" (about the Battle of the Teutoberg Forest).

The only strange thing is that the house is haunted by an Hessian soldier and they're wondering what he's doing in their brand new house .To find what he's doing in their house read the best book in the world the "Battlefield Ghost".
It's a Ghost!.......2002-05-09
I was reading the Battlefield Ghost. The main people are John, Lisa and the Mom and Dad and the Ghost. This book is about when they move to a house and it is hunted. I did not like how short the book was. It is OK and I liked the book because it was like a forth grade book, and I'm in fifth grade. The ghost was a little pushy, but he was nice. I liked the ghost. He was cool. I would recommend you reading this book. I liked the end. The ghost goes to the place he should go to, and I like that kind of book.
The Great book.......2002-05-09
If you have not read this book, you should. It's about a boy named John and a girl named Lise. One day John, his sister and their mom and dad moved to a haunted house. The ghost that haunted the house was named the Hendersen Ghost.
Something that I did not like about it was that they talked too much. I think there should have been more action. Anyone who likes suspense and a lot of fun you will like this book.
Battlefield Ghost.......2002-05-09
John and Lisa's family moved into a haunted house. I like when it's scary. It has lots of actions and lots of details. There are other languages in the book. It is a little confusing. They look around the house and everything looks really old. The ghost has been tapping on people. Lisa has a new horse. Then John and Lisa went to the battlefield with Arab the horse.
great book 5th & 6th graders should read!.......2000-02-16
this is a book everyone could read! If you're looking for excitement, and chilling story, *READ THIS

Customer Reviews:
this book needs a companion.......2004-01-15
this book is full of excellent facts and figures BUT has no photos or even sketches. Therefore is of no use on its own as a bird watchers field guide.
A Must-Have for AZ Birders.......2003-01-17
Though the text is over 20 years old, this little book is still a highly valued and regulary-opened part of my library. Anyone wanting to be well-informed on the birds of Arizona should have and read this book.
The distibutional and subsepecies information is impeccable. Nothing newer has come along to replace it.
