Not Cohesive.......2000-07-20
I was disappointed in this book. The photos appear so dated that I actually double-checked the copyright date and was surprised to see that it is a fairly recent release. What troubled me most was that it seemed incohesive, with no theme or direction. Saeks usually does an outstanding job with her design books, but I'm sorry I purchased this one.
A Dazzling Resource!.......2000-02-29
California is such a huge state that anyone tackling a book like this is faced with a daunting task. Diane manages to provide an illuminating look at the variety of interiors that make up the "California style". The photos are rich and the commentary has a sense of humor that is lacking in most interior design books. All in all, an indispensable book for all designers and their clients!
Definitive and Inspirational.......1999-12-06
In writing about design, it's not merely about being right, but rather being able to capture the essence of important details that convey a coherent message. Diane Dorrans Saeks has done just that in California Interiors.
This sophisticated book is the definitive source for California interior design and the spirit that inspires it. It is certainly comprehensive, but more significantly, it is compelling in its focus. Every detail makes you want to investigate closely with a magnifying glass, yet it is the overall statement that lingers. And as beautiful as this book is to look at, its real importance and value is found through the insight offered in its text. It not only offers a record of what has been done, it also serves as an inspiration to discover what has yet to be achieved. It is a great resource to have, an inspired gift to give and a wonderful one to receive. California Interiors will keep calling you back, and I can say that each visit will be filled with rewards.
Picture the New California.......1999-12-04
Europeans love California almost as much as Californians love California. They value the intellectual and artistic contributions from California as free from continental conventions. Ms. Saeks has given us a beautiful and telling book that looks at California design through the European eye. The author captures the projected images and real substance embodied by California life.
European curiosity about California includes how we project pop culture, innovate technology and engage in utopian experiments. This book addresses, understands, explores, explains, shows and celebrates the spirit and intellect that inform this Promised Land of the American West. All the themes are here: Natural World, Ceremonial Space, Personal Innovation, California Modernism, Technology, and Craft. This book is the next best thing to visiting artful friends who live in personal houses located in storied landscapes.
California has always lionized outsiders, and "California Interiors" has the spirit of all the forces that make California one of the goofiest, most beautiful and highly creative places on the planet. Where else could you see the Eames Case Study House a page flip from sage John Dickinson, this-close-to this year's IT girl Kelly Lasser? The project photographs and printing are spectular Taschen quality.
Europeans in general and at Taschen in particular have design all figured out. They know what's good, has value, lasts, engages, indulges, uplifts and is new. They know what California design will be remembered for...as it emerges. There's beauty on every page of "California Interiors". Buy this book.
not up to standards.......1999-11-28
I've read all of Dianne Dorrans Saeks books and own many of them. I eagerly await each new addition so I was very dissapointed in California Interiors. It appears to be written and photographed for a European market. It's all stuff we've seen over and over again with no cohesive theme. The graphics aren't up to her usual standards, the book doesn't seem to have any design. It looks as though it's a first time effort.

Bill Brandt, one of the most prolific 20th-century photographers, is beautifully represented by this volume, which contains nearly 400 of his black-and-white photographs. These range from his famous, starkly disturbing portraits of the denizens of either end of the social ladder to his late, poetic landscapes and cool, studied, abstract nudes. In between are several series that contain singular images of great familiarity, such as his portrait of painter Francis Bacon in an eerie, lamp-lit landscape, or the one of two housemaids in starched white caps standing at attention behind an upper-crust dining-room table. Brandt's passionate interest in the shocking juxtaposition of the very rich and the very poor brought him a wide audience as well as accusations of being a Socialist propagandist. During the Great Depression, Brandt traveled to the north of England and made some of the most devastating pictures of his career, exposing the extreme poverty--and dignity--of the area's coal miners.
Author Bill Jay has divided this book into eight sections: A European Apprentice, Observing the English, Courting the Surreal, Journeys North, The Dark City (Brandt made haunting pictures of wartime London during the blackouts), A Return to Poetry, Portraying the Artist, and the Perfection of Form. Jay's introduction is warm and perceptive--and laced with juicy anecdotes. Nigel Warburton, another Brandt expert, contributes an illustrated time-line of Brandt's many professional assignments, under the rubric "The Career." This carefully edited book demonstrates why Brandt has always enjoyed high stature among artists, for it is packed with individual masterpieces. But even if it were not, it would be powerful simply for the breadth of Brandt's accomplishments. --Peggy Moorman

Great selection but the quality of printing is no good. Buy different one of him.
Bill Brandt was cool.......2003-05-23
This is book shows several of his masterpieces and is definitivelly worth of buying. A sense of humour is hidden in his photographs...
Brillant Brandt.......2001-04-26
I recieved this book last christmas as a gift after been totally inspired by his work in various galleries and musems for some years. This book is beautifully presented covering the different subject matters including london, north england, nudes. Looking at these pictures gives one an overall idea what a great talent he was and is one of the gretest photographers of all time. If you are a lover of fine art photography or just enjoy great photography this book is most defently worth buying. A brilliant book.
An Outstanding Collection!.......2000-03-12
This book really shows how amazing Bill Brandt was as both a photographer and an artist. His work dives into so many areas from landscapes, to documentry work, to stunning figure studies. His use of high contrast is haunting in the best possible way. I was particularly pleased with the way the book covers his entire body of work.
Absolutely first rate in form and content.......1999-11-16
I've been a fan of Bill Brandt for decades, have nearly all the books on Brandt, and am a significant collector of his photographs. I am pleased to say that this book has helped me to see Brandt's work with new eyes, yet again. The images are beautifully and faithfully displayed, the accompanying text helpful, insightful. For too long, purchasing major books on Brandt was an exercise in out-of-print frustration. If you have any interest in Brandt, or if you know someone who does, buy this book! It exceeds expectations.

Book Description
Description: Ten Out of Ten is a celebration of the best in British photography. It comprises ten photographs by each of ten leading photographers: Sir Cecil Beaton, Bill Brandt, Barry Lategan, Don McCullin, Roger Mayne, Norman Parkinson, Rankin, Lord Snowdon, John Swannell, and Albert Watson. The subject matter of the images cover a wide range: from fashion and beauty to portraiture and social documentary, from Beaton's portraits of British artists to Mayne's documents of 1950s street life, from the timeless elegance of a Parkinson fashion study to the searing war reportage of McCullin. The subjects of the portraits range from Sir John Gielgud and Princess Diana to Kate Moss and Gilbert & George, and the photographs date from 1936 to 2000. This is a wonderful selection of photographs edited by Martin Harrison, one of the most respected scholars of photographic history. All proceeds from the book will go to support the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Rather elementary text with a deceptive title.......2003-05-10
As a professor who teaches courses on environmental conflict resolution, I acquired this book with great anticipation to find a new text for my students. Alas, this book was an utter disappointment. First, it assumes the title of "environmental conflict" clearly to reach a popular audience when the substance of the book is almost entirely about economic concepts for high school or freshman college courses. The publisher should make this more clear in marketing the book, since there is an entire field of environental conflict resolution to which this book has little relevance.
As far as the coverage of economic conepts is concerned, the redeeming feature of the book is that it presents these concepts in a freindly (though opften trite) way. The coverage of these concepts is perhaps intentionally superficial. This book would have been better suited as a supplement to a commercial text book rather than as a stand-alone volume from a generally respectable university press.

Book Description
In Democratizing the Global Economy dozens of top-notch activists and educators examine the mounting protests against the World Bank and IMF, why these lenders have finally generated such heated opposition, and what the global justice movement proposes replacing them with in order to build a democratic global economy. For half a century the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank-two of the most powerful institutions on Earth-operated in near-total secrecy. Now, an international grassroots movement is exposing these elite operations to the uncomfortably bright light of public scrutiny.
Customer Reviews:
A little fluffy but still worthwhile.......2002-03-07
Kevin Danaher, editor of *Democratizing the Global Economy*, says that there are three strategies for workiing towards an economic structure that isn't controlled by secretive corporate elites. The first way is to shift public priorities from profit maximization to civic and environmental responsibility; the second is to insist on corporate accountability; the third is building a new grassroots-based structure within the shell of the old corporate structure. Education, advocacy, creation of alternatives: three ways to buck the global system.
*Democratizing the Global Economy* claims to focus on the first of these: education. It offers a variety of essays that fall into three categories: how to protest corporate globalism, the structure and influence of the World Bank and IMF, and future directions for the anti-globalism movement. The essays vary in quality. Robert Weissman's "Twenty Questions on the IMF" is a genuinely instructive piece outlining the relationship between the IMF, Congress, and the World Bank. Noam Chomsky's co-authored "A Letter to the U.S. Congress," on the other hand, seems thrown in only to include Chomsky in the volume's list of contributors. Most of the essays tend to be rhetorical rather than analytical or statistical. One sometimes has the impression of being harangued at a public meeting, and as a consequence is fired up without being instructed.
Still, the book is well worth reading. I would suggest, however, that it be read in conjunction with some more analytical treatments such as Marjorie Kelly's *Divine Right of Capital* or Charles Derber's *Corporation Nation*.
Great Stories, but little vitals.......2001-11-06
I purchased this book in order to help me on my High School Senior Thesis, which is on the subject of Third World Debt. While the stories are great, little information is devoted to actual numbers and specific examples of World Bank/IMF actions. Also, the stories from participants from the WTO protests in Seattle and the World Bank/IMF protests were interesting, but come from a very liberal, "My rights are more important" attitude.
More Mindless Dogma and Propaganda.......2001-07-14
This book neither advances a scholarly discussion of the potential advantages or dangers of globalization nor illuminates a discussion of the development needs of the more than three billion people in the world who live in desperate poverty. Like Danaher's earlier effort in 1994, this book is just a compilation of one-dimensional accusations and slogans attempting to discredit the World Bank and IMF and provide some intellectual basis and justification for the circus-like protests he and his fellow radicals and anti-capitalists have participated in for more than a year. The Bretton Woods institutions are far from perfect, but at least they are trying to make a difference in the fight against poverty in the world. The writers represented in this book have interesting points of view, but their views are clouded by the effort to discredit approaches with which they differ. Poverty and the challenges ahead need all the help and attention that can be mustered. It would be interesting to contemplate how much more useful the energies Dahaher and others expend in condemning the World Bank and IMF might be if they were channeled toward work in the field with operational NGOs and other private organizations to accomplish real results. This book is not worth the time of serious development activists, although I'm sure those who are looking for one-dimensional answers and direction for their street protests will find convenient slogans for their posters and justification for the paving bricks they throw through shop windows.
A clarion call to action by grassroots activists.......2001-04-15
Ably edited by Kevin Danaher, Democratizing The Global Economy: The Battle Against The World Bank & The IMF is a clarion call to action by grassroots activists seeking to expose two of the most powerful financial institutions in the world, The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Both of which work in near total secrecy, often to the detriment of ordinary people of the working class and citizens of third-world nations. Included among the contributors are Fidel Castro on the need for poor nations to unite against corporate rule; Carol Welch on how economic lending institutions are used for corporate welfare; Robert Weisman on how most debt relief programs have been little more than public relations distractions; Terry Allen on police brutality and recent government efforts to suppress activism; Naomi Klein on how criticism of protestors' alleged "lack of vision" has often been misleading; Deborah James on twelve effective ways to democratize the global economy; and many more articulate and experienced commentators. Democratizing The Global Economy is a much needed and very welcome contribution to personal and academic economic studies reading lists and reference collections.

The Theory of Unemployment Reconsidered.......2006-05-29
Eight years after the appearance of Professor Malinvaud's The Theory of Unemployment Reconsidered, its fundamental message still stands: namely, that the microeconomic theory of fixed-price general equilibrium has direct significance for the macroeconomic theory of involuntary unemployment.
Of the two theories advanced for explaining the origin of massive involuntary unemployment, the "classical" one claims that wage rates are too high for firms to find it profitable to recruit all the available labour force, while the "Keynesian" one finds that a too low effective demand for goods explains why an excess supply of labour prevails. Theoretical explorations into the general equilibrium of an economy with sticky prices and rationing open possibilities for a new understanding of the respective domains of validity of these two theories.
The book first discusses the foundations of the new approach, then proceeds to a detailed study of the various impacts of short-term poicies. Turning to medium-term evolutions, the author enquires why Keynesian unemployment is more frequent than classical unemployment, but points to circumstanses that make the present situation in the Western World somewhat somewhat akin to classical unemployment.
In this revised and expanded edition of his text, Professor Malinvaud includes a new preface and index, and connects the analyses of the book with recently published research work.

Book Description
Is sex more trouble than it's worth? Are you too slow? Do you rely excessively on prolonged (even painful) intercourse, oral sex or vibrators? Is your orgasm hit or miss?
Now with this bold but simple 3 step program, any woman - YOU - can achieve orgasm without difficulty during sex. IMPOSSIBLE? Not if you follow the quick and easy formula you will learn in this book.
Now there is hope for any woman suffering the agonizing frustration of a too-slow, unreliable or non-existent orgasm. Five Minutes to Orgasm once and for all crushes the dogma that achieving orgasm must take longer for a woman than it does for a man.
Stop blaming your partner for being too fast, inept and uncaring. Five Minutes to Orgasm describes in frank, detailed terms a method for making female orgasm the natural, effortless outcome of each and every lovemaking experience, and frees him from slavery to the female orgasm.
Customer Reviews:
Not Exactly a Revelation.......2007-10-15
I can understand how this book would help women who have never combined penetration with mastrubation. My girlfriend has never hesitated to combine the two, yet she still has trouble reaching a climax. Vibrating toys seems to be the best guarantee, but this information doesn't hurt.
Educational.......2007-09-12
This book is easy to read, entertaining and educational, a trusty guide to the physical means to that wonderful and mind blowing orgasm.
Five Minutes to Orgasm.......2007-09-11
I decided to buy this book because I've always had problems reaching orgasm when my husband and I make love, and I was hopeful that there was something I hadn't tried. This book is great, especially for a woman who hadn't really tried the technique the author suggests. I guess I thought there was something wrong with it, or I hadn't thought of using manipulation and intercourse together. But the author makes a good case for the point of view of the book, and even though I am relatively inexperienced at masturbation, I decided to practice more as the author suggests. I would recommend this book as an augmentation to other sexual literature, depending on how experienced you are, whether you do or do not have difficulty reaching climax. It gives more detailed and complete explanations than many, somewhat more than your average "improve your relationship" type of books give. From talking to some of my other women friends, especially those who are not embarrassed to admit they still haven't gotten it "right," many of us could use this refresher course in making love.
Faster and Efficient Orgasms.......2007-09-08
If you are one of the many women who have a problem in this area, in order to achieve orgasm during intercourse, you need to learn how your body works. Learn how to get in positions where you can move your hips and easily reach your clitoris for a fast and easy orgasm. You can continue to try reaching orgasm through thrusting alone and end up dissatisfied, or you can guarantee your orgasm every time you have sex by using this book.
Purchased for a Friend.......2007-09-08
I bought this book for a friend who has been having the kind of trouble with her sex life that I used to have - trouble reaching orgasm. It was never impossible for me; just difficult. From this book, I quickly learned the new approach (although nothing's really "new") and immediately tested it with my boyfriend. It worked, and he was impressed. The book is well-written and an easy read. The formula is described so that it is easy to do.
Book Description
Before arming yourself with a fighting knife, arm yourself with the facts. Colonel Applegate, the world's foremost authority on close combat, wrote this book to instill in readers the skills necessary for contemporary knife fighting. Now you, too, can benefit from the same instructions that generations of military and intelligence personnel have.
Customer Reviews:
Words Horrified me, but information was relevant.......2007-05-15
I felt the words were too vicious in description for me. I am a knife thrower, but a hobbyiest and I found this written like a hunter killing a deer.
Este libro apesta.......2007-03-08
El libro no trae nada de informacion importante es una perdida de papel. Y como si fuera poco tiene algunas paginas en blando en el medio.
worlds worst knife fighting guidebook!.......2003-08-11
One would expect much more from Rex Applegate...the main plot of the book revolves around how Applegate made a new knife that improved upon the Fairbairn-Sykes knife of World War Two fame; Applegate spends most of the book trying to sell his design, the Applegate-Faibairn combat dagger. The book gives a bit of knife fighting history and a few basic do's and dont's.....my advice, don't.......
Just for whom is real interested in Applegate's work.......1999-06-28
This booklet it's only a brief collections of hints extrapolated by the books of Col.Applegate. It's a promotion for the Applegate/Fairbarn's combat knife too. No use for the beginner, no use for the expert, just a bit of history.
informative at the start but finish slow.......1999-01-04
it had good begininer information but ended rather slow the pictures needed help
Book Description
This volume, the first in a series to cover the world of the fighting man, covers the principal events during each military period, the leaders, the battles fought, weapons used, and tactics employed.
Book Description
Mysterious, remote, and home to many strange and marvelous creatures, the Galapagos archipelago is a bird watchers' paradise. Here one can find penguins on the Equator, the flightless cormorant, the renowned finches who played a role in Charles Darwin's theories of evolution, and many other species, some found nowhere else in the world. In Galapagos Diary renowned illustrator Hermann Heinzel pairs with wildlife photographer Barnaby Hall to capture in words and images the stunning birds and other wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.
The first half of the book provides an overall tour of the islands, describing in words, illustrations, and photographs the range of habitats and wildlife to be found there. The authors highlight the strange behavior and breeding strategies of the archipelago's land and sea birds with alluring and often amusing images.
The second half of the book is a detailed field guide with sketches as well as finished paintings, photographs, and maps. Galapagos Diary contains vibrant images and informative text on every page, along with detailed and highly descriptive field notes, moving this volume beyond conventional field guides. Hermann Heinzel's enthusiasm and skill shine through in these beautifully written notes on all the Galapagos birds including the extremely rare and endangered Dark-rumped Petrel and the Mangrove Finch.
Concluding the book is a checklist of all the birds so that bird watchers and natural history enthusiasts visiting this magnificent island archipelago can record their personal observations. Armchair naturalists alike will thrill to the vivid illustrations of the unusual creatures the inhabit these islands, and to the engaging and insightful text that transports us to the Galapagos, once known as the "Enchanted Isles."
Customer Reviews:
A must for a bird watchers library.......2007-05-12
Heinzel and Hall have as the title suggests provided a diary with the last 100 pages being hand written notes and sketches of the birds encountered on their travels on the Galapagos Islands. The first 158 pages are rich in photographs of the birds found on the islands in their natural habitat. Photographs of some of the other animals found on the islands are included but the major focus of the book is the birds.
Poor quality pix? "Busy" layout?? C'mon, this is well done!.......2006-03-20
I couldn't believe the panning review below. The pix are great in this colorful, beautifully laid-out book. Scenic shots (Galapagos is not the Riviera) alternate with close-ups of wildlife, maps, and colored paintings/sketches of the inimitible wildlife. "Busy" for some, packed with value for most. A great resource! The print *is* a bit small -- this book could well be republished in coffee table sized format....
Very Bad Book.......2001-09-01
I strongly recommend not buying this book.
Visually it is a mess. The print is very small, the photographs are generally of poor quality and the layout of the pages are too busy.
The text is essentially a diary and may be of interest to the people who took the trip, but it is not well written. Although there is good information here and there you have to wade through a lot of boring text to get to it.
A BIRD BOOK FOR "ALL".......2000-12-30
"The Galapagos Diary" is a delightful book. It has two levels of reader focus. The "top" level of focus is targetted to the reader who desires to relax and see birds in their environment. It contains "portraits" of the bird population featuring photographs by Barnaby Hall. It appears to be designed for relaxation and enjoyment as opposed to detailed study. The second level appears to be intended for the "student." It uses a unique combination of photographs and sketches to present the characteristics of the Galapagos' birds, their actions, and their environment. The two-level focus of the volume makes the book a desirable gift, because it targets a wide range of readers with varying backgrounds, interests, and ages. You don't need to know how to spell ornithologist to enjoy it.
Remarkable Book.......2000-12-30
Galapagos Diary was one Christmas present I couldn't seem to put down. Although I have never visited the Islands and have no special interest in wildlife, I found the pictures remarkable and the text compelling. I had no idea such unusual creatures inhabited the Galapagos Islands. The Blue Footed Boobies (now, really, who comes up with these names?) are my favorite with Great Frigatebirds coming in a close second. The book's young photographer, Barnaby Hall, is incredibly talented for his age--he looks to have been around 15 when he took these. What a professional job! I naturally recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos (it has a helpful section with sketches to help identify the birds and other wildlife), but also for anyone with a general interest in nature. If you like those Nature specials on television, this book is for you. As for me, I've added the Galapagos Islands to my list of Places to Go in the future!
