Complete technical reference.......2002-11-07
I bought this to learn more about building materials--wood, stone, concrete, metals--and was not disappointed. Each chapter begins with a summary that's authoritative but friendly. And interesting. You'll learn, for example, that the trick to making a hydraulic cement is to add some siliceous mineral to the limestone before firing in a kiln. The Romans used volcanic rock; modern Portland cement producers find it in certain clays. You'll realize none of these materials can stand up to water, which eventually returns them to their more chemically stable states, changing concrete into limestone, smelted metals back to ores (rust), and turning wood into food for other living things.
What follows the introductory discussion is probably too technical for non-professionals--references to ASTM standards, specifications for water jet delivery in gallons per minute and PSI when cleaning stone, and tips for making your own epoxy using bulk chemicals, complete with Dow Chemical part numbers.
I was a little disappointed by the presentation--B/W photos by the author and very basic drawings--but I suppose that's all that's needed for a book like this.
If only I had opened this book before the exam........2000-12-06
A wonderful reference tool for the professional conservitor, or even the "Matha Stewart" home fixer-uper.

Book Description
From renowned woodcarver and instructor Ian Norbury, this handy reference covers the basics of bandsaw woodcarving and demonstrates how to accurately portray the female face in wood. One step-by-step project guides carvers through the details of female-face woodcarving, including outlining the project, modeling the figure in clay, and carving, polishing, and mounting the final piece. A comprehensive reference section with full-color photographs of women's faces provides anatomical explanations and working drawings to help the carver better understand the female anatomy. An additional appendix features design notes on women of varying ethnic backgrounds and ages.
Customer Reviews:
Norbury has a carving system that actually works!.......2005-01-04
My husband is a woodcarver and is pretty darn good at it, with one exception --the human face. He carved a clown, an indian and a man's head, a Roman and Don Quixote and he was not satisified with any of those faces. Then he got his hands on this book. When he finished the bust of the female, I was startled to see just how good a carving it was. Now I'm afraid that he's decided that his problem was that he had not carved women's heads. He's looking around for a camera and a model to photograph from a multitude of angles, just like Norbury showed him how to do in this book. I'm just not too sure how far I want him to go with this new found talent....
Top of the line book.......2004-11-01
This is the best book I've seen about carving the female bust. Norbury works from photographs and goes into great detail about using photos to make the pattern for the bust of choice.
His directions are excellent, especially for determining the removal of unwanted stock. This could almost be considered a textbook.

Book Description
This book is the perfect start for anyone interested in learning how to carve detailed faces. Mary Finn uses her "practice stick" method to show you how to carve each feature - eyes, nose, closed mouth, open mouth - with step by step directions that even beginners will find easy to follow. Then she shows you how to arrange all of these pieces into one wooden egg to make a convincing head! This method has helped hundreds of Mary's students, and is a sure-fire way to get started! "Egg head" projects included in this book are an old man, a pirate, and the Mad Hatter. Mary shows you how to adapt her carving techniques to flatter surfaces to make jewelry (like a bolo tie project) and how to paint your pieces for maximum impact. This book is terrific for beginners, and a great way for more advanced carvers to enlarge their skills., 283 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

Don't buy it for the eggs, buy it for the sticks.......2007-06-27
Several people had mentioned this book in the Woodcarving Illustrated message boards under the subject of study sticks.
They were absolutely correct. The sequence of carving study sticks for particular facial features is by far the most valuable feature of this book. Beginning or intermediate carvers will find the process of carving the study sticks a fabulous way to practice facial features. I'm working on a second iteration of the "eyes" stick, and I already have a much better appreciation and understanding of eye structure in a carving.
** Okay, if you are interested in carving heads from basswood eggs, that part is very detailed as well.

Carving Facial Expressions .......2007-09-20
I hope someday, I can carve wood like this guy!! He's amazing!! Clearly, the best book on learning facial expressions. A+++. Starting w/a diagram of the facial muscles, & how each one works, down to the different kinds of facial expressions doing all sorts of faces. This book is a MUST for any wood carvers, beginners or pros alike.
Quality Yes! Quantity No!.......2003-12-16
This is a good book for helping one carve facial expressions however it has a very limited number of examples and expressions to offer. The book is worth it for someone who is very much interested in carving, but for more information on facial expression try Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression.

The collection of words truly was an inspiration of life. After I finished reading the book, I had a new profound feeling about life. I feel that everyone should read this book once, because many of people in our materialistic society, including myself, take life for granted. But for me, that is a thing of the past. HAPPY READING!!!

Building Community Capacity (Modern Applications of Social Work)
ASIN: 0968823319
Release Date: 2006-10-01 |
Product Description
Rooted in decades of work with indigenous communities in the Americas, as well as extensive experience in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the former Soviet Union, "Recreating the world" is really two books woven together. The first is a down-to-earth exposition of models, principles and strategies for understanding what community development is and how it can be promoted. The second is a rich collection of stories, games, activities and tools that can be used to help others to learn about various aspects of community development practice. In this book, building sustainable community is presented as a primary strategy for solving critical human problems. Community building is not merely viewed as a means to an end, however. Sustainable community is a basic human need, and in its absence, human life becomes distorted, painful, and often self-destructive.

Book Description
In this probing and original study, Parks M. Coble examines the devastating impact of Japan's invasion and occupation of the lower Yangzi on China's emerging modern business community. Arguing that the war gravely weakened Chinese capitalists, Coble demonstrates that in occupied areas the activities of businessmen were closer to collaboration than to heroic resistance. He shows how the war left an important imprint on the structure and culture of Chinese business enterprise by encouraging those traits that had allowed it to survive in uncertain and dangerous times.
Although historical memory emphasizes the entrepreneurs who followed the Nationalists armies to the interior, most Chinese businessmen remained in the lower Yangzi area. If they wished to retain any ownership of their enterprises, they were forced to collaborate with the Japanese and the Wang Jingwei regime in Nanjing. Characteristics of business in the decades prior to the war, including a preference for family firms and reluctance to become public corporations, distrust of government, opaqueness of business practices, and reliance of personal connections (guanxi) were critical to the survival of enterprises during the war and were reinforced by the war experience. Through consideration of the broader implications of the many responses to this complex era, Chinese Capitalists in Japan's New Order makes a substantial contribution to larger discussions of the dynamics of World War II and of Chinese business culture.

Customer Reviews:
If not for this book, I wouldn't know where to begin. .......2005-01-16
If not for this book, I wouldn't know where to begin. If not for Mardie Caldwell's efforts and talent, her caring heart and experience, I'd be swimming in the vast, endless sea of the Internet floundering around, stumbling upon wonderful websites, but lacking direction and guidance. Thank God for this book. It is a roadmap, clearly explaining everything from how to use a computer and the Internet, to pointing you towards adoption websites and resources. I'd never know most of these websites existed if not for Mardie's book. Her work is a blessing, and am indebted to her for pouring much of her time and heart into this book.
Whatever your circumstances: the pains of infertility, wanting to adopt to add to your current family, or wanting to adopt because you're like me- you just know it's the right thing for you and the child you eventually end up with, I strongly recommend the book Adopting Online.com by Mardie Caldwell. I've looked in bookstores, on the Internet- and have never found such a concise, easy to understand adoption book that breaks down the process and guides you, step by step, through the entire adoption process and then some.
If I could personally thank Mardie Caldwell for writing this book, I'd do it. The next best thing is posting a book review in the hopes that she'll see it, and others will discover, as I have, this amazing adoption resource book.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use.......2007-09-06
I love this field guide! It has full page pictures on the left side, making it easy to just flip through the book and find the bird that you're looking for. And limiting it to just the birds in the Carolinas eliminates the irritation of thinking that you've figured out waht bird it is - only to find that that bird only lives in Arizona!
Great bird book.......2007-08-28
Several years ago a neighbor suggested that I purchase this fine book.Wow, was she right !Easy to use, informative, and great pictures in it, which really helped to id birds of all type.Any birder would appreciate this book.
Very informative book.......2007-08-23
I actually bought this for my dad. A friend of mine had a copy, and the pictures and descriptions are very clear. Great photos. Only wish I had gotten the CD at the same time.
The Best!.......2007-05-09
I have always been frustrated by bird books -- either I can't locate anything that resembles the feathered creature in front of me, or I identify the perfect match ... only to discover that the bird I claim to have seen has never been spotted within a thousand miles of my locale.
Stan Tekiela's book takes care of everything:
The title says it all! There's no way you can foolishly identify the rare Didgerywhatsit, which nests only in the Rocky Mountains -- if the bird isn't found here in the Carolinas, it's not within these pages;
The photographs actually look just like the real, live birds (why haven't others managed this??); and
It is organized by colour, so it is as easy to identify the relatively drab females as it is the showier males.
We have had enormous fun with this little volume, and can't recommend it too highly.
Great Quick Reference.......2007-04-04
This little book has covered every bird we've seen at our Charleston, SC feeder. Nice photos, good descriptions and durable book construction make this a nice take along guide.
