Book Description
With just a little inspiration from Country Living’s successful series, anyone can turn a small and awkward space into an appealing, cozy corner.
Every home has its tiny room, oddly shaped hallway, empty landing, or other difficult-to-decorate area—but these innovative and quick approaches are the first step in turning neglected spaces into models of decorative style. The topics covered range from Themes and Collections to Perfecting Your Palette; some of the ideas are as simple as varying the sizes of objects in a display to create visual interest. Other concepts—such as creatively mixing formal and informal elements—will free home decorators from tired and dull design tenets and bring “fresh air” into any décor. Smart tips and easy, enjoyable projects help jump-start the transformation, while detailed captions for the photos and many sidebars reveal exactly how the job was accomplished.

Book Description
During the last century international trade has become indispensable for many economies. This is not only the case for trade in primary raw materials and consumer products but also for secondary (recyclable) materials. With the rapid growth of the recycling sector worldwide, trade in recyclables increased tremendously. It is striking that most of this trade flows from developed to developing countries. This book addresses the main causes of this typical trade pattern and investigates its economic and environmental effects by carrying out case studies on waste paper imports in India, waste plastics imports in China, and used-tyre trade in Europe. The book concludes by recommending policies that are aimed at preventing negative economic and environmental effects potentially resulting from trade in recyclables. The book offers new ideas to researchers who are involved in international trade, material flows, and waste management, and provides new insights for decision-makers who are interested in WTO and the Basel Convention.

Book Description
In 1997, amid much fanfare, Leo Corry announced to the world that he had uncovered proof that Albert Einstein arrived at the generally covariant field equations of gravitation, before David Hilbert. Leo Corry joined with Juergen Renn and John Stachel and published an article in the journal "Science" arguing against Hilbert's priority. Their claims were largely based on a set of printer's proofs of David Hilbert's 20 November 1915 Goettingen lecture, which Corry had uncovered. However, in this 1997 article, "Belated Decision in the Hilbert-Einstein Priority Dispute," Corry, Renn and Stachel failed to disclose the fact that these printer's proofs were mutilated, and are missing a critical part. Full disclosure of the facts reveals that even in their mutilated state, these proofs prove that Hilbert had a generally covariant theory of gravitation before Einstein, and that Einstein plagiarized these equations from Hilbert. The author of "Albert Einstein: The Incorrigible Plagiarist" focuses in on the general theory of relativity and discredits the baseless historical revisionism of Leo Corry, Juergen Renn and John Stachel. The direct comparison of primary source material demonstrates that Albert Einstein did not originate the theory of relativity. Formal mathematical proofs explain how Einstein was forced to fudge his equations in order to derive the results Paul Gerber and Johann Georg von Soldner had published long before him. Einstein did not yet have the benefit of plagiarizing David Hilbert's generally covariant field equations of gravitation and was operating under an erroneous assumption. An extensive history of the principle of equivalence proves that Einstein plagiarized this idea. The book reprints the relevant papers by Einstein, Soldner, Gerber, and Hilbert, as well as the remainder of David Hilbert's mutilated printer's proofs of his article "The Foundations of Physics". While the book presents the mathematical proofs needed to justify its claims, the non-mathematical reader will find it rich in prose and will be able to follow the arguments and the history presented.

Let sleeping dogs lie.......2004-12-28
Many people may have been misled by the tactless and prejudiced account of the history of the Hilbert-Einstein equations of gravity published in 1997 by Leo Corry (Cohn Institute, University of Tel-Aviv) and John Stachel (Director of the Center of Einstein Studies, Boston). The "objectivity" of that account is well demonstrated by the fact that Corry and Stachel "forgot" to mention that the set of galley proofs of the fundamental Hilbert's paper that they analyzed was incomplete and was missing a critical part. The wonderful book by Bjerknes is a perfect remedy to Corry and Stachel's "discovery" and their attempt to further cultivate the cult of personality of Einstein at the expense of Hilbert. The book is thoroughly and meticulously documented and leaves only one way to counter it: by silencing it or by labeling the author as Einstein-hater (or worse) and changing the subject. Especially valuable is the section reproducing the original publications, including the (incomplete) galley proofs of the Hilbert's paper. If after having read this book someone still thinks that Corry and Stachel understand physics well enough to write about the history of general relativity then I would recommend the paper by A. A. Logunov et al., "How were the Hilbert-Einstein equations discovered?" Physics-Uspekhi, vol. 47, pp. 607-621 (2004) (in English).

Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960
ASIN: 0226648745 |
Book Description
This book examines the much-debated question of whether John Maynard Keynes' greatest work—The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money—was an instance of Mertonian simultaneous scientific discovery. In part I of this study, Don Patinkin argues for Keynes' originality, rejecting the claims of the Stockholm school and the Polish economist Michal Kalecki. Patinkin shows that the theoretical problems to which the Stockholm school and Kalecki devoted their attention largely differed from those of the General Theory and that, even when the problem addressed was similar, the treatment they accorded it was not part of their central messages. In the remaining parts of the book Patinkin presents a critique of Keynes' theory of effective demand and discusses Keynes' monetary theory and policy thinking, as well as the relationship between the respective developments of Keynesian theory and national income accounting in the 1930s.
Customer Reviews:
Patinkin erred when he accepted the claims of Richard Kahn.......2005-03-29
Patinkin's(P)basic conclusion in this book is that the theory of effective demand, presented by Keynes in the General Theory(1936;GT) in chapters 3(chapter 3 contains a brief outline of what Keynes would do in the other chapters mentioned in this sentence),10,19,20,21 and the appendix to chapter 19 in order to explain the problem of involuntary unemployment(the existence of an unemployment equilibrium),as well as why labor ,in the aggregate, would be unable to cut its money wage,is defective because Keynes did not provide any correct microfoundations , mathematical model or economic analysis showing how such a result could occur in a rigorous, formal manner.Patinkin argues that what Keynes meant by an unemployment equilibrium was in fact an unemployment disequilibrium where the adjustment path to a new full employment equilibrium state was very slow to occur in real time because the adjustment path of the general level of prices and wages was sticky and slow as opposed to the classical and neoclassical position that the new equilibrium state would occur quickly because price and wage changes occurred rapidly.(Patinkin completely demolished the strange claim ,made by a number of economists such as Franco Modigliani, that Keynes had assumed rigid money wages and/or prices.)The crucial difference, then, between Keynes's approach and the classical/neoclassical approach, is in the actual speed of adjustment of the level of prices and money wages in the macroeconomic system as a whole. There is some support for this interpretation of Keynes's analysis, but it is based on a study of Keynes's obiter dicta and not on the crucial chapters 19(and the appendix to chapter 19),20 and 21,taken as a whole.Patinkin's crucial error was to ignore the entire D-Z analysis of chapters 20 and 21 and concentrate mainly on chapters 2, 3,10 ,and 19,based on the claims made to him by Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson that Keynes was a poor mathematician by 1927 who had not taken the time to master the theory of value(microeconomics) and thus was unable to formalize his theory of effective demand in mathematical terms despite the enormous amount of time that they(Kahn and Robinson)had spent trying to correct the many errors made by Keynes in writing the GT.Keynes's general theory results can be easily derived by any reader of this review who is able to differentiate and integrate the results provided by Keynes on pp.55-56,ft.2,chapter 20,(pp.280-286)and chapter 21(pp.304-306,especially p.306),where Keynes presents the generalized Quantity theory of money that incorporates the case of involuntary unemployment.Keynes's general theory is simply that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p equals the real wage, mpl is the marginal product of labor in the aggregate, mpc is equal to the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, and mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods. If mpc+mpi =1,then Keynes's theory merges with the neoclassical theory. On the other hand,if mpc+mpi
<1,then a unemployment equilibrium exists which is impossible to eliminate by decreasing the money wage since the money wage must increase, not decrease,in order to maintain the necessary optimality condition for equilibrium.I recommend this book for purchase as long as the reader keeps in the back of his mind the disinformation that Kahn and Robinson were providing Patinkin over a nearly 50 year period of time in their exchanges of private correspondence,a correspondence that Patinkin just assumed was correct.

The Power of Purpose: Creating Meaning in Your Life and Work, by respected life/work planning specialist Richard Leider, is a lofty yet down-to-earth guide for people struggling to find their true professional callings. Developed through the author's considerable personal experience and extensive interviews conducted over the past 20 years, it's designed to serve as a jumping-off point for those who'd truly like to combine their "own unique gifts" with "the needs of the world" to carve out a vocational niche that's both individualized and highly rewarding. A helpful guide to using the material in a reading group is included.
Book Description
"Purpose" and "calling" seem at first to be grand words, applicable to only a gifted few. But career coach Richard Leider argues that everyone possesses a true calling, as well as the unique talents needed to support it. Filled with useful tools for self-assessment, The Power of Purpose helps readers uncover their own talents and aspirations, and shows how to incorporate "the common sense of soul" into everyday life. Interviews with people of all ages provide inspiring examples of those who have created lives filled with meaning and passion.
Customer Reviews:
Obstacle2.......2007-01-03
I agree with other reviewers about positive points in this book, but what bothers me is the examples given : they all seem to be very special people : trainers, founders of training centers, vice-presidents of companies,....
This confirms obstacle 2 as given by the author : "only a few special people have true purpose in their lives". I think we have a need for purpose in our lives, even if we are a gardener, a pizza boy, a cleaning lady, a sweatshop youngster sewing T-shirts in Laos, an office clerk doing standard routine work. It is a pity that we find no such examples in this book. From the book we get the impression that the only way to find a purpose is to quit our present job and to become a trainer, writer, etc... but there are also other jobs to fill, I think. Moreover, if everybody goes into training and/or writing, these jobs will loose their financial attractiveness, I suspect.
This book is a must read! For negotiating mid-life transition, it's a very helpful guide!.......2006-10-28
I have read many of Richard Leider's books, & among them I consider 'The Power for Purpose' as the most influential on my personal growth. I have read this particular one in the late eighties/early nineties - about the time I started to ponder about what I want to do with the second half of my life. I was then a successful corporate rat, working in quiet desperation - looking damned good but actually going nowhere.
The 'Power of Purpose' is not another book about goal setting. It's a workbook to help you think through & decide whether you want to choose to lead a purposeful, productive & meaningful life. In fact, the parts that attracted me most at that time were these questions posed at the beginning of the book:
- Is your work rich & purposeful?
- Do you see yourself, through your work, as making a difference in the world?
- Do you view most work days with a sense of enthusiasm?
- Have you developed your won philosophy of life & success?
- Do you feel a sense of meaning & purpose for your life/
- Are you living your life now - or hoping that life will work out someday?
It comes complete with self-assessment questionnaires, checklists, & exercises. I recall I had spent considerable effort & time in using them to probe my life during that period of time. Together with a few other books (including Frederic Hudson's, Marsha Sinetar's & Joe Dominguez's), this book has been instrumental in creating abundant opportunities for doing what I love & loving what I do. Many thanks to you, Richard!
Since then, one of the tools that I have picked up from the book for continuing ultilisation till today is the purposeful reflection: soloing & journaling from Chapter 19. This one is a real gem! Also, from this particular chapter, I have made use of &/or adapted all the strategies as outlined in the author's 'Other Strategies for Self Management'. They have really helped me in realising total satisfaction & fulfillment in my life!
To end my review, I want to say this: This book is a must read! If you are going through a mid-life transition, just like what I had gone through during the early nineties, I can guarantee this book is definitely a very helpful guide!
Your Simple Truth [....].......2001-08-01
In 1999, I read this book 3 times, during what I still say had to have been the worst possible time in my life. It was a time of profound family betrayal, or acceptance of what I didn't want to believe about who my family really is, what they had expected of me for my 43 years of life, and the role that I blindly held. This book was a painfully compelling book for me to read, yet one that had supported me through my crisis, and led me to convert my family history into becoming a public speaker, a gender-based self-esteem coach, and a journalist. Last week, I decided to read this again, as I noticed that I am being invited to events that signal to me that I have made giant steps since reading this book in 1999. I am so excited about writing and presenting tailored training to make a difference in each of my client's lives. I had written so many introspective documents, for so long, that now, even though I continue to introspectively write, I am consciously and unconsciously talking as someone who is here to make a difference in everyone whose life I do touch in some way. I have found a level of peace through reading Richard J. Leider's book that required me to look deeply in my soul and befriend everything about myself. I actually giggle when I reread my journals from 1999, where I had written profound painful feelings that I experienced. I giggle because I see how I weathered my way through living the life I am meant to live. I gave myself or found in myself gifts that I definitely approve of having.
Regardless of where you are in your life, I suggest that you read this book, with a pen in hand to write down what you are thinking and feeling. Accept that this will be scary, at first. Do this, knowing that you deserve to love yourself for all who you are -- you are sent here to make a difference.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-01
Richard J. Leider believes everyone needs to find an individual sense of unique purpose. When you have this sense of purpose, you can use it as a central core of direction to guide your life and give it meaning. The book is simply written, easy to understand and targeted to a general audience. However, it also seems quite repetitious, in that the same ideas are explained many different ways. Some of these concepts are quite familiar, echoing some basic ideas about the importance of having a sense of mission, path, and goals, much like Laurie Beth Jones' book, The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement.... Finally, while some readers may respond deeply to Leider's spiritual and religious references, others may find them problematic, given the split in the business community about spirituality in the workplace. We... recommend this book for readers who have not yet considered this mission-focused dimension of life planning and for managers who wish to understand this perspective.
Very disappointing.......2000-07-31
Power of Purpose would make a great magazine article, but there is not enough content here to make a good book. "Creating Meaning in Your Life..." is not what this book is about. There is lots of talk about how important it is to have purpose in your life, but little about how to create it. Mr. Leider has a great reputation -- it must have come from his other books.

This book is concise, short, full of photos(all Black And White) and very easy to read.
The failures of this book are small. The biggest failure of this book is, to be very short. This book hasn't enough informations, about this subject.Even as an introduction to this subject, this book hasn't enough informations.

Book Description
This illuminating and stimulating book argues that the history of English landscape from about 1760 to 1820 reflected a struggle between proponents of a traditional, natural, Christian, organic-or tory-view of the landscape versus those who advocated the aggressive, privatizing, impersonal-or whig-tendencies of contemporary "improvement". Examining literature, painted and engraved images, and the physical environment of the period, Nigel Everett depicts a lively, intelligent debate about the development of English society and the relation of people to the land.

excellent little guide to regional tracks.......2003-08-08
This is a fine beginners guide to identifying the tracks you might find while hiking in New England, whether you're in an urban area or on a wilderness hike. While not comprehensive, you will find the more common animals from your environment -- 34 mammals (including mice, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, skunks, frogs and toads, fox, coyote, porcupine, raccoon, deer, moose and bear) and 9 birds (including grouse, crow, duck, owl, heron and eagle).
The book begins with a preface of enouragement followed by an introduction on how to use the book and where/how to look for tracks, continues with 2-page species entries, and concludes with a short suggested reading list and an index.
Entries are ordered roughly by size, and a 5-inch ruler is printed on the back cover. Each entry has a couple of descriptive paragraphs on the lefthand page and b&w line drawings of typical tracks on the right.
This little book is surprisingly informative and quite compact -- a perfect introductory book for kids or adults who are interested in the wildlife around them.
It is a great book for identifing animals........1999-06-06

Book is excellent guide to NH birding and NH's quiet beauty.......1999-12-19
I was told by somebody the other day, "why search far and wide for *birds*, for goodness sake?" in perhaps slightly stronger words. He may have a point in a way: some recent rare bird sightings in NH have included the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, Nashua's broken glass filled Mine Falls "Park" and just down the street from congested state highway 3 in Merrimack/Bedford ... and so on and so forth. Why go far and wide indeed! Following any of this book's 21 tours, and seeing any one of the more than 100 bird sites mentioned will give you the answer. You find that the serene beauty of the surroundings mentioned - along with the welcome quiet - encourages you to see and hear more. This search for the almost spiritual essence of bird watching is what makes this book special. Modestly called "A Standard ABA state birdfinding guide which provides thorough coverage for the entire state of New Hampshire" by the author, the locations are anything but standard. From the wails of terns and gulls at the seacoast of Odiorne State Park to soaring hawks at Mt. Kearsarge summit to the remote wilderness of the North Country's Connecticut Lakes, the book will take you to the silent beautiful spots to breathe, listen and enjoy.
Just a couple of cautions: Each tour can take as long as three or four days to complete properly. You'll lose that "essence" in a big hurry if you decide that the seacoast is great, but maybe that trip down the Androscoggin River can be done by the end of the day! The areas that are mentioned are not always connected by major interstate highways.
A good bird picture guidebook is recommended, such as "Peterson's Field Guides: Eastern Birds" if you want to actually identify birds. While we aren't particularly good at that (and often make fools of ourselves misidentifying bird species), it's still fun to try.
Other books on nature and birding in New Hampshire can be found But I would highly recommend this book to add to your collection of books of northeastern natural sites.
