In recent years, vegetable gardening has made a comeback as a popular pastime in America. Yet, gardeners are creating vegetable gardens with a difference; they are intended to be pleasing to the eye as well as a source for fresh produce. In an effort to beautify traditional vegetable gardens, landscape architects and amateur gardeners are finding inspiration in the elaborate European vegetable gardens of the seventeenth century. Feast Your Eyes examines the historical antecedents of this modern movement as well as the changing perceptions of the beauty of vegetable gardens over time and among different cultures. Generously illustrated with over one hundred historical and contemporary photographs and artwork highlighting material from the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Gardens, this book provides a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion of such topics as the vegetable garden at Versailles, Ming dynasty vegetable gardens, the war gardens of World War I, World War II victory gardens--including those of the Japanese American internees--and vegetable still lifes.
As the boundary between vegetable garden and flower garden has become blurred, the same is true for vegetables. Horticulturists have developed popular garden ornamentals from kale, chili peppers, sweet potato, and eggplant. Pennington provides "biographies" of these vegetables and describes new varieties that are being developed for their aesthetic qualities. She shows how this is not a uniquely modern phenomenon but is rooted in the introduction of exotic vegetables to Europe starting as early as the thirteenth century.

primarily a history book.......2007-08-25

I was a little disappointed in this book. It is primarily a history of some famous gardens which have been covered more completely elsewhere. The photos are for the most part very old and not as clear as they should be, and there were not enough of them. There are a couple of interesting topics such as an outline of the use of victory gardens during WWI & II, and a small section on Aztec gardens created in a marsh. Otherwise not worth it. I was looking for something more like 'Creative Vegetable Gardening' by Joy Larkom - but this was not it.

Bruno Engler was born in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1915. He came to Canada in 1939 and spent over 60 years photographing the Canadian Rockies. The last of the Swiss mountain guides hired by Canadian Pacific he was a climber, ski instructor, cinematographer, occasional actor, writer, story teller and high altitude photographer.

He was the recipient of numerous awards including the Alberta Achievement Award for Excellence, the Premier Cup for photography and Mountaineering, and the prestigious Rose Award presented at the World Environmental Festival in 1986 in Ottawa, Canada. He also received an honorary lifetime achievement award from IATSE, the international photographer's guild. He was named an honorary member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides in 1975.

In 1987, at the Banff Festival of Mountain Films, Bruno was selected as the recipient for the inaugural Summit of Excellence Award, representing the highest of honours from his peers in the mountain community for his contributions to Canadian Rockies culture and for his enthusiasm and dedication to photography, guiding and skiing.

I was downsized myself years ago and Peggy's book is right on target! A great perspective on the atrosities on corporate America-good for her. A must read for anyone who had ever gone through adversity on their lives.

I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I found it amazing that so many of Ms. Pattison's experiences in life and in corporate America are very similar to mine.

Downsized and Survived.......2004-09-11

Ms. Pattison's book made me cry again and then fly just as her title suggests. For far too long corporate America has chosen downsizing as a means to create a leaner and more productive workforce. The problem, as Ms. Pattison so eloquently points out, is that the most experienced and productive workers are the ones who are being downsized, leaving organizations leaner but without the talent and experience to be more productive.

I believe that this book should be required reading for anyone entering the corporate jungle but even more I recommend it to those who are currently living and ruling there. As this book points out corporate America is imploding with all of its downsizing of experience and turning to temporary workers and outsourcing to professionals, who have themselves been downsized from a competitor or in some cases from the very corporation that is now hiring them.

I could have written this book because Ms. Pattison's experience has been my own several times during my career. However, I would not have done it with the same flair and humanity. I recommend this book and thank the author for writing this honest, funny and true look at downsizing and life after.

At First You Cry .... and Then You Fly!.......2004-05-27

In 184 pages Ms. Pattison concisely discusses the reactions of downsized executives, actually anyone downsized, and offers
new perspectives on recovering from the depression and fear downsized individuals experience. Neither her experience nor her
response to it are totally new; however, her book is an excellent response to her situation and that of many others.

Since she was a corporate trainer who had to terminate or downsize others her explanations of what is wrong with corporate America's strategy are accurate and to the point. When she explains the effect the downsizing has on the company involved and on the economy as it tries to revive itself she brings several intelligent points to current economic discussions.

Of special interest are the examples she provides of companies terminating valued long term employees and then not having other staff with the skills necessary to fill the vacated positions. Still corporate America doesn't learn and continues to dump the most valable resource it has without providing a skilled back-up workforce. Ms. Pattison seems to be telling others, like herself, to consult or form businesses to outsource those needed skills to the very companies that downsized them and to do it at a much higher price and with a great deal more freedom.

Her points on "then you fly" are a blueprint for moving forward with your life and making you happy in a new and more challenging environment.

Read this book to know others are facing the same dilemma's you are, why all of you are facing these problems, how one very special talented woman got out, and how to chart your way out of the depression and fear of downsizing into a new life.

Hard to find info on little known army.......2006-11-05

Pivka takes the time in this entry to really delve into the political events etc. that contributed to the condition of Portugal's military at the time of the French invasion as well as meticulously detailing the uniforms and particularly the colors of the uniforms of the Portuguese regiments. An essential volume for anyone modeling the Penninsular War.

A very interesting book about the portuguese army.......2001-04-06

This is indeed a very interesting book that provides an overview of Portuguese army organisation and uniforms during the campaigns against Napoleon's armies in the Peninsula.

The Portuguese army was an essential element that enabled the forces led by the future Duke of Wellington to defeat the french invading armies.

The books has, however some minor mistakes, when the authors mention the names of some portuguese units, they write some names in Spanish. This must be corrected in the next editions and I hope that these mistakes do not appear on the third volume.

Nevertheless it is a very good book.
