Good introduction to gender issues in archaeology.......2000-01-14

As a beginning (male) college archaeology student, I have not had much exposure to the issue of gender in archaeology yet. When I saw this book in the library, I figured I'd give it a shot over Christmas break. It was not a waste of time. This is a thoughtful and well-written book which points out many obvious (and some not-so-obvious) instances of androcentrism in both the study and practice of archaeology. There are a few places where it seemed that Nelson was about to fall into the trap of gynocentrism which she rightly denounces as being just as bad as androcentrism. However, she usually catches herself in time. I am very glad I decided to read this book, because it has given me a new perspective from which to evaluate the material I will read in the future.

In my opinion, this book isn't for Pokemon fans who want to catch more Pokemon. It's more of a little kid's book. A lot of Pokemon are living together in the forest, when Clefairy loses it's voice. This is bad, because it's Clefairy's job to wake all the other Pokemon up in the morning. The elder tells the Pokemon that someone has stolen Clefairy's voice, so Clefairy's friends go on a search to find it. They look all over the forest for it, but it turns out a little girl found Clefairy's voice, trapped in a bottle. The little gives it to a Ponyta and Clefairy gets it's voice back. I think this is a good book because it teaches two lessons. One, it teaches kids not to give up. Two, it teaches kids that sometimes you need help from others to get a job done. All in all, I think this would be a very good book for kids.

There are several thousand books in my home. Beside my desk there is a shelf with the special books I travel with on speaking tours and those I refer to when I need the 'right' quote. This is one of those special books. You can't open a page without finding something delightful. I love this book.

If you're not in the habit of practicing self-care, it's a habit you want to acquire right now -- while you are pregnant -- and this book will teach you exactly how to do it. I read and re-read this book countless times during my pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Five stars!

It really is comforting.......2003-09-29

I have come back to this book time and time again during my pregnancy. It really enjoy that it offers a sense of humor and is light-hearted while it also is honest about challenges. It suggests writing assignments and self-nurturing home projects that I never was interested in doing BUT just reading about the common experiences of women was really helpful. Reading this, I never felt alone in what I was feeling.

I have read a lot of Jennifer Louden's books, and I have to say this is one of my favorites. It speaks to exactly what a woman experiences during pregnancy. Highly recommended.

The Pregnant Woman's Comfort Book is one of the few pregnancy books out there that addresses the emotional tides a new mother goes through. Yes, it's vitally important to understand the biology of growing a baby, which so many books focus on, but this book has helped keep me sane, grounded, cool, and in love with my daily changing body.

Yuck! Too New Age touchy-feely........2001-07-02

I got this book as a gift -- I surely wouldn't have spent any money on it. It encourages self-absorption, which is never a good thing, and focuses on silly New Age "self-discovery" techniques. I suppose there are always going to be people who eat up this sort of thing, but I for one don't have time for such nonsense. This would be a great gift for a pregnant friend who is into cats, crystals and aromatherapy, but no-nonsense types are not going to like it.
