Few architects of the twentieth century have achieved the harmonious and pleasurable fusion of local building traditions with modern forms and sensibility as has Geoffrey Bawa. The man and the buildings that he has created over the last forty years have become legendary in the region and influential around the world. Born in Sri Lanka in 1919 and educated at Cambridge University, Bawa initially worked in a Colombo law firm before returning to London's progressive Architecture Association as a student in the 1950s. His early works were houses that artfully married vernacular styles and sensitively responded to climate and site with a modern architectural vocabulary. It wasn't long before his talents were applied on a larger scale, to a number of carefully designed hotels, the Sri Lanka parliament, and a wide variety of schools, office buildings, and other public works. His oeuvre is symbolized by the evolution of his own residences, in Colombo and in Lunuganga, which eloquently reflect Bawa's career and personality.
This ambitious publication is a comprehensive documentation and appreciation of the man and his work. Introductory chapters present Bawa's early life and the influence of local architecture and his education, while the heart of the book is a portfolio of his most important works. The reference section includes a complete chronology.
Architecture trends come and go, often fueled by a preoccupation with technology, but master architects whose works transgress boundaries, history, and styles always have something to teach. Hidden within the confines of one of the nation's oldest county hospitals is a historic and unprecedented collection of mural paintings. The art collection at Indianapolis's Wishard Memorial Hospital was originally created as murals that adorned the walls of patient care wards. Today, it hangs in public spaces, offices, and conference rooms throughout the hospital. A total of sixteen prominent Indiana artists contributed to this mammoth 1914 project, resulting in an estimated quarter mile of artwork. A bit too much nonsense.......2007-04-19
Unfortunately the author has gotten some of the science wrong, stating for example that carbon is radioactive and mislabeling important graphs. Since this is the 3rd edition one would have hoped the editors would have glanced at the book since it was written in 2001. The author (an immigrant from India) has a very strong anti developed-world bias. He argues vehemently against carbon trading and offsets, not acknowledging that these mechanisms reduce CO2 buildup. He wants instead, I think, punishment to be meted out to the developed countries for their success and rewards to be given to developing countries for their lack of success. He does not appear to want emission controls on developing countries, but prefers that the developed world gift the developing world with free solar power plants. For a no-nonsense guide, there is too much of this nonsense.
I do like the chart on top of page 138 on tips to personally cut emissions (like becoming a vegetarian).
Not "Bad Science" Anymore!.......2002-12-26
Even conservatives now admit that global warming is a reality and that it's primarily the result of fossil fuel use (see the EPA document on global warming published earlier this year). But the extent of the problem is only beginning to sink in. The twentieth century was the hottest century, the 1990s the hottest decade of the millennium, and 1998 the hottest year of the 1990s (we know this from analyzing atmospheric gases trapped in Arctic ice). And we're only feeling the effects of CO2 emissions from 35 years ago! The nasty effects of all the emissions since then haven't even kicked in yet. Moreover, global warming will also lead to "feedback"--the official term for extreme weather. Tornadoes out of season, violent thunderstorms and hail, droughts, floodings, blizzards: all of these are already occuring as wind currents and meterological conditions feel the effects of overall global warming.
Dinyar Godrej's *Climate Change,* a volume in the excellent "No-Nonsense" series, outlines the basic (and frightening!) facts about global warming, backing his claims up with a wealth of data and references. This makes his book a convenient (and affordable) resource for anyone who wants to get a handle on what's happening to the planet. But Godrej also offers some social, political, and personal suggestions for slowing down and hopefully reducing the human activity that creates global warming. Highly recommended. Read it, get scared, get angry, get working! And while you're at it, get rid of your SUV.

Provides a useful historical and theoretical background........1999-11-16
I found this to be a satisfactory book. Although the writing is somewhat dogmatic and awkward, the book provides a useful historical and theoretical background behind rhodiola rosea, a medicinal herb that is newly available on the nutritional supplement market.
The authors have the credentials needed to give an educated viewpoint and the book provides research references to support the information given. Incredibly, the authors do not give specifics about what kind of strength or standardization to look for when purchasing the herb (a definite oversight). They do however give a helpful list of companies that sell it. It should be noted that all three authors have a significant financial stake in the marketing of this particular herb.
The best part of this book is the topic. Several years from now, you WILL be hearing about this impressive new herb. Why wait to hear about it at a cocktail party? Get more accurate and timely information from this book.

Description:
We investigated contributions of leaf litter, root litter and root-derived organic material to tundra soil carbon (C) storage and transformations. ^1^4C-labeled materials were incubated for 32 weeks in moist tussock tundra soil cores under controlled climate conditions in growth chambers, which simulated arctic fall, winter, spring and summer temperatures and photoperiods. In addition, we tested whether the presence of living plants altered litter and soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition by planting shoots of the sedge Eriophorum vaginatum in half of the cores. Our results suggest that root litter accounted for the greatest C input and storage in these tundra soils, while leaf litter was rapidly decomposed and much of the C lost to respiration. We observed transformations of ^1^4C between fractions even when total C appeared unchanged, allowing us to elucidate sources and sinks of C used by soil microorganisms. Initial sources of C included both water soluble (WS) and acid-soluble (AS) fractions, primarily comprised of carbohydrates and cellulose, respectively. The acid-insoluble (AIS) fraction appeared to be a sink for C when conditions were favorable for plant growth. However, decreases in ^1^4C activity from the AIS fraction between the fall and spring harvests in all treatments indicated that microorganisms consumed recalcitrant C compounds when soil temperatures were below 0 ^oC. In planted leaf litter cores and in both planted and unplanted SOM cores, the greatest amounts of ^1^4C at the end of the experiment were found in the AIS fraction, suggesting a high rate of humification or accumulation of decay-resistant plant tissues. In unplanted leaf litter cores and planted and unplanted root litter cores most of the ^1^4C remaining at the end of the experiment was in the AS fraction suggesting less extensive humification of leaf and root detritus. Overall, the presence of living plants stimulated decomposition of leaf litter by creating favorable conditions for microbial activity at the soil surface. In contrast, plants appeared to inhibit decomposition of root litter and SOM, perhaps because of microbial preferences for newer, more labile inputs from live roots.

Abhorrent yet Spellbinding.......2004-10-18
Holocaust Revisionism is a dangerous area. It is filled with some people who are very smart and others that are dangerously stupid. This book by Paul Rassinier is considered the touchstone work of revisionism. Rassinier was an inmate of Buchenwald, but lived in great denial. He claims that only around a million Jews were killed in the holocaust and the Jews themselves ran the camps in a Judeo-Communist conspiracy. To be honest this book gave me a headache, page after page made me sick. I do however recommend reading it, it is fascinating study of what lengths the revisionists will go to support their various theses, borrow it if you can find it, buying it, if from Revisionist groups only gives them more money to spread their...well crap.
