    Book Description

One of the most fascinating and sophisticated applications of glass in contemporary architecture is its use as a load-bearing material. Pioneered by Peter Rice and Hugh Dutton for structural glazing of façades, glass as a structural material is now commonly used throughout buildings. Glass Roofs, Glass Façades, Other Glass Walls, Glass Floors, Glass Beams and, as the utmost point of experiment, Glass Columns are the subjects of this book. The introduction deals with questions of material properties and the central issue of security, while the final part develops an integrative approach to architecture based on the experience of building with glass structures. The author Rob Nijsse is partner of abt, one of the biggest engineering firms in the Netherlands. He draws on his intimate knowledge of a large number of projects by Benthem & Crouwel, Neutelings, Mecanoo, van Egeraat, Cepezed, O.M.A., Arets and many other architects in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Portugal and Korea.

4 out of 5 stars a great book on how to render and create your style!.......1999-01-30

Joseph Ungar puts together steps and thought processes that enable you (thru practice) to put your ideas down on paper efficiently. The important thing to note is that his techniques will become part of your work sense, and your style will emerge through practice. A strong and agile concept presentation style is a designer skill that Ungar clearly demonstrates, and, in turn: one that a learning designer can quickly grasp.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect match of verse and pictures.......2000-08-16

According to my trusty and well worn Concise Oxford Dictionary "exquisite" means "of consummate excellence or beauty". I looked the word up because it was the word that came to mind whilst enjoying this work. Much pleasure to return to many familiar poems of Robert Frost eg MENDING WALL and STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING and to discover unfamiliar gems such as BEYOND WORDS. But the photos too have a clarity and depth and composition not to mention colour which helps the contemplative richness of Robert Frost's words. And not a human in sight! Especially rewarding work for those moments of repose, of calm, when one wants to escape the hurly burly, the flim flam, the gibbering and bustle, and drift, dissolving into the natural world. But, returning to the world of commerce, I can tell you this book is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best color photography ever!.......1998-12-31

I have a fairly extensive collection of art and fine photography books:This modestly priced book represents the VERY BEST photography one could hope to gaze upon. This collection of photographs is an antidote to alot of the "eye candy"stuff that passes for landscape photography these days! This book also offers the best argument for color to those black and white"purists"out there.Do yourself a favor and purchase an armful of these books(I am assuming you have good friends who enjoy fine gifts!)

Japanese retailing has long been regarded as traditional or even backwards when in reality it has constantly demonstrated its innovation and dynamism. This book highlights these developments by looking at: innovations and underlying driving forces; responses of Japanese retailers to deregulation; increasing competition; changes in consumer behavior; and internationalization during the 1990s. All of these factors are analyzed through a thorough investigation of innovative activity from the 1950s onwards.

"The U.S. military-industrial complex, as we have known it, is in the process of devouring itself, literally and tangibly. The awesome interlocking structure of armed forces, industrial interests, and political alliances that has sprawled across American public life and purpose for two generations cannot endure for long," writes Rolling Stone correspondent William Greider in the introduction to Fortress America. Although shorter than his previous books on the Federal Reserve and the global economy, Fortress America is vintage Greider: strong reporting and sharp analysis on a topic of current and compelling interest. Greider doesn't address U.S. defense strategy so much as the perverse economics underlying the American military establishment. Costs and commitments forever escalate as basic military readiness deteriorates. The Pentagon continues to request next-generation fighter aircraft and Congress agrees to fund them even as fundamental training exercises go wanting. The problem isn't that the United States will lose its next war, but that massive waste and incredible redundancy make national defense a pricey behemoth. Greider calls for a fundamental reordering of priorities; this is an argument Washington--and, increasingly, the public--cannot ignore. --John J. Miller

                              Book Description

Through vivid reportage, revealing anecdotes, and illuminating interviews with military personnel, bestselling author William Greider explores how and why America has avoided coming to terms with the end of the Cold War era-and the troubling consequences for our fighting forces and our country.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-05

I ordered this book knowing that it would not contain a picture of the future America. I bought it because I knew that it would be filled with numbers and the dollars and cents of the exorbitant and wasteful costs of the Military Industrial Complex. I figured that this might be the last time - for a long time - that I might find such numbers displayed so openly.
I'm thinking that this book by Mr. Greider may become a collector's item. A few years from now it will probably be inconceivable to think that there was ever a time when the theme of this book - How to Downsize the Military Industrial Complex - was ever a serious topic for political discussion. This book is already an historical classic. Another like it will not appear in my life time - maybe never ever again. Once again we have been saved from the horrible prospects of "peace".

3 out of 5 stars Analysis of military's dilemma holds up well post-9/11 .......2007-07-22

Interesting 1998 book discussing the U.S. military's inability to deal with post-Cold War realities. Greider argues that, determined to maintain all its Cold War capabilities as well as the capacity and profitability of the defense industry, the military failed to adjust staffing, procurement, and strategic planning to the `new world order.' Most of his conclusions hold up well post-9/11: an emphasis on high-tech weaponry at the expense of appropriate staffing levels has led to near-disaster in occupied Iraq, and the vast ramping-up in the defense budget hasn't helped retrieve the situation--though, ironically, it has helped shore up defense industry profits and avoid the downsizing of that sector that Greider predicted. As for the peace dividend, it is long gone.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, Not Moving.......2003-02-03

This book contains useful facts and analysis, but I doubt it's moved many people to action. (Of course the policies it advocates have not been adopted by the Bush II regime.)

People like me who would like to see our military drastically reduced and who have little faith in the good intentions of anyone involved in it are likely to be turned off by Greider's more middle of the road views and what appears to be his reluctance to express some of the anti-military views he does hold.

People who long for an ever bigger military are unlikely to be converted by this book.

I think Greider wanted to avoid preaching to a choir, but walking down the middle, or pretending to, has found him fewer readers than his information and ideas deserve. He ought to have passionately argued a case (a moral case, not a strategic or economic one) for radical change. Those inclined to agree would have been more likely to get their hands on the book, and those inclined to disagree would have ended up picking it up too in order to know their opponent. Some would have been persuaded.

On page 10, Greider predicts a decrease in military ("defense") spending because this is what the public wants. On page 172 Greider points out a yawning chasm between what the public wants and what happens. This is illustrative of a gradual shift. The book starts out sounding like an article in the Washington Post and concludes sounding like one in the Nation.

The corruption analyzed along the way is not terribly new to readers of the Nation, but it's useful to have these facts and anecdotes in one place. The fact that a single aircraft carrier costs $5 billion, the same price as a proposed National Housing Trust Fund, is the sort of thing that cannot be restated enough.

What we could have used much more than this book was a plan for tying opposition to military waste into campaigns for positive public spending. We have for too long desperately needed to transform tax-and-spend proposals into axe-the-military-and-spend proposals.

We NEED to work out the politics of proposing and fighting a grassroots campaign for specific public school or Medicaid improvements tied to specific eliminations of military pork.

And quit calling it "defense" for godsake!

5 out of 5 stars How We Got Here.......2002-12-06

In 200 startling pages, William Gireder tells America how our insatiable appetite for all things military has led us into a national dilemma, the economic and global implications of which are frightening.

Grieder's 'wake up call' details a bloated military industrial machine which has consumed much of our national wealth, and now has nowhere to direct its massive inventories.

Greider examines the political, social and economic effects from the perspectives of generals, line workers and politicians alike. The book has an excellent read, which will hold your interest through every paragraph. You will not be tempted to sigh and page ahead.

Grieder tells us how we got here, and offers a thesis to explain the current administration's obsession with finding a new boogey man to justify the continued propping up of a military industrial complex whose utlity expired along with the threat it geared up to face for decades - the Soviet Union.

4 out of 5 stars Fortress America: Weapons for yesterday's war........2002-02-09

The book is ahead of its time. The problems that the book identifies are (somewhat) being addressed by the Army Transformation toward new technology and new types of weapons.

If this book reads like the tabloids, then please tell me which newspaper. I'd like to read related facts.

A puzzle still remains: How to keep weapon production ready for war without overproducing? Some old weapons are being upgraded or retrofit. However, obsolescence remains a major issue. Parts are really hard to replace when the vendor no longer exists, etc....

Not that the discerning reader can't get a lot of good info out of this book but it appears to me that the author went out of his way to portray Rockwell as a loser, a misfit, and someone in need of psychiatric care.

Simonelli somehow managed to get access to much of Rockwells personal correspondences but it seems that he selectively used them to point out instances of turmoil and sadness in Rockwells state of mind. He especially uses Rockwells feelings of despondency about his wife, who was the daughter of the Icelandic ambassador to America, leaving him and taking their children back to Iceland with her. I don't think its a particuarly radical statement for me to say that feeling sad about losing your wife and kids is a sign of being normal. Simonelli somehow manages to twist this into an example of Rockwell being an insane loser.

The other bio of Rockwell, Hate by William Schmaltz, is a far superior and unbiased account of GLR's life and highly recomended. However I can only recomend American Fuehrer to somebody who is researching Rockwell and knows how to read with a discerning eye.

3 out of 5 stars Psychotic Abused Child Blames Grows Up To Become Fuehrer.......2004-01-18

Rockwell is another in a long line of haunted personalities mining the hatred of Jews for his own benefit. The same psychosis, blame the Jews and the Blacks for all the abuse he received as a child. Instead of facing his psychological problems, Rockwell scapecoated them and ended up being killed by one of this own supporters, a small band of latent homosexuals, who channelled all their fears and rage into hatred of minorities.

But what is interesting is the man before me charges that the Jews control the media, and distort the news. How do they do this? Do they meet at a Chinese restaurant every Sunday to give out orders in controlling the world. Who is the top Jew? Larry King, Barbara Walters, Noam Chomsky, or maybe Michael Moore, who is really a Jew hiding his identity.

If the Jews control the media, why is it everytime I pick up a paper I see favorable pictures of Palestinians, and unfavorable pictures of Israelis, even when they are innocent civilians riding in buses and eating in restaurants?

Yes, there are a lot of Jews in the media, but when does that become a crime, and what type of personality, sees all Jews acting in a conspiracy?

This is the same type of person who feels humiliated by anyone who is more talented and competent than him, a perpetually impotent type of personality who is looking for a rationale for his failure in life and love.

The great crime of the Jew is that he has been successful, and to the perpetually impotent personality this is something that can never be forgiven. Personalities like Rockwell perpetually exploit this hatred, which is basically a hatred of life and love in all its forms. Their true focus is not the Jew per se, but all talent, all ability, all life-positive action.

Rockwell may have been the only hope to how our world became today.

Simonelli's book has two main virtues. First, he had a great deal of access to Rockwell's correpondence and papers and quotes from it liberally. Second, he had a great deal of access to the files of Jewish organizations and individuals who opposed Rockwell.

In spite of this wealth of primary sources, however, the book is disappointing and prefunctory. It seems that after all his archival sleuthing, Simonelli lost interest in his subject matter when he actually sat down to write the book. This leads to a distorted picture of Rockell's ideas and personality. A much fuller picture is found in the Schmaltz biography HATE.

One case in point: Simonelli's discussion of the case against John Patler, Rockwell's convicted killer, leaves out crucial pieces of evidence, giving the impression that the case against Patler was weaker than it actually was. Then Simonelli goes on to air the conspiracy theories blaming Matt Koehl, William Pierce, and others for the murder. These may seem plausible to the reader only because the case against Patler is stated weakly. This is VERY MISLEADING and quite simply unjust.

Simonelli actually does a better job of documenting how Jewish organizations first tried to terrorize and intimidate Rockwell, and then, failing that, resorted to a very successful press blackout to deny him publicity and prevent his ideas from being heard and debated. Simonelli demonstrates just how powerful the Jewish control over the media is, and how Americans are fed a version of reality that is distorted to protect and advance Jewish interests. This is a frightening thought, because if they did it then, they can do it now too.

The bottom line: I recommend this book as a supplement to Schmaltz's HATE, but not as a substitute. If you read one book on Rockwell, read HATE.

A rare gem of a biography. Dr. Simonelli's work on George Lincoln Rockwell is difficult to put down. Solid work on Rockwell and his influence in the 1960s, and how his efforts can be seen in National Socialists today. Simonelli's research into Rockwell's death has angered some of today's neo-nazis, ... You may ask why you should read a Rockwell biography. Read it and find out why.

                                            Book Description

This volume investigates the ways in which people in the early Middle Ages used the past: to legitimate the present, to understand current events, and as a source of identity. Each essay examines the mechanisms by which ideas about the past were subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) reshaped for present purposes. As well as written histories, also discussed are saints' lives, law codes, buildings, Biblical commentary, monastic foundations, canon law and oral traditions. This is the first book to investigate systematically this important topic.

This volume investigates the ways in which people in western Europe between the fall of Rome and the twelfth century used the past: to legitimate the present, to understand current events, and as a source of identity. Each essay examines the mechanisms by which ideas about the past were subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) reshaped for present purposes. As well as written histories, also discussed are saints' lives, law codes, buildings, Biblical commentary, monastic foundations, canon law and oral traditions. The book thus has important implications for how historians use these sources as evidence: they emerge as representations of the past made for very special reasons, often by interested parties. This is the first volume to be devoted fully to these themes, and as such it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the role of the past within early medieval societies.

Geared to beginning birders, the Handbook includes useful advice about selecting binoculars, looking for identification markings, even sketching birds. The presentation follows the usual Dorling Kindersley format: lots of annotated color photographs and illustrations; straightforward text penned by a recognized expert; and helpful appendices on related topics like birdwatching ethics, building a reference library, birding organizations, and taxonomy. A chapter on "Birding Hot Spots" provides maps and locations of particularly rich birding regions throughout North America, while those with a burgeoning interest will appreciate an overview on photographing and recording birds. This is not an ID guide (try National Geographic's Field Guide to the Birds of North America for that), and it's not meant to be carried in the field, but for a would-be birder looking to get started it's a fine primer.
