4 out of 5 stars Ames gateway lodge.......2007-10-02

The only book on Richardsons works that has interior floor plans. Limited, but it had the one I was most interested in. Would of prefered a hard bound copy. Happy I could find this one though. Since I only cared about Ames lodge, I haven't actually read the book through. Its worth the expenditure of your money if your a Richardson fan. Fahey.....

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to the work of H.H. Richardson.......2005-05-03

H.H. Richardson is often credited as the first architect to craft a unique American style. He influenced Louis Sullivan, who taught Frank Lloyd Wright, who inspired Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler and John Lautner. That encompasses a lot of American architecture. This guide provides the reader with a succinct description of each of Richardson's works, with addresses and even maps to help the interested architectural tourist to visit the actual sites. Reading the book is informative. Visiting the sites is breathtaking.

4 out of 5 stars SNAPPY 1930'S HARDBOILED, GENTLY SKEWED.......2001-07-17

If you like humor with mayhem, hardboiled and "closed community" "golden age" mysteries this melange of a funny novel is for you. PI Bill Crane goes undercover at a lunatic asylum (well, OK, it *is* a high-class joint, and they don't call the patients lunatics but "guests") to solve a theft and guard an old lady, and then people start dying.

Terse hardboiled-style writing, well done, a fast read. Seems as though the writer is quite tongue-in-cheek about the PI conventions - a running gag is that the PI gets beaten up at least once daily, and he has a great time poking fun at this premise. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but can't give 5 stars because I feel he has better stories in him.

          Book Description

Kabuki Heroes is about collective participation in urban culture—on the stage, in poetry salons, in art studios, and in fan clubs. Focusing on the culture of Kabuki theater in Osaka and Kyoto, the book illustrates the passionate hero worship of actors by all levels of society. Fans vigorously engaged in the creation of celebrity and fame for their idols, and thereby won their own moments of glory and glamour in the spotlight. Many of these participants are represented here—most of them ordinary townspeople, but also a few samurai and courtiers. This interactive nature of Kabuki culture is particularly intriguing: the actors themselves not only appeared on stage, but involved themselves in other cultural circles such as poetry salons, Kabuki fan clubs, as well as performing formal rituals at the theater. Individual fans became amateur performers, while others created lavish color prints and books to support favorite actors and spread their fame.

This catalogue illustrates that our obsession with celebrity is not just a modern phenomenon: in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Osaka, we can rediscover many elements in common with our own times. Just as we now worship celebrities both in private and in public—at concerts, theaters, and sports events—so too did Kabuki fans celebrate their stage idols. Most importantly, after the spread of new color woodblock printing technology in the late 1760s, a golden age of popular Kabuki culture was promoted far and wide with beautifully colored prints and books. The over-300 fine examples brought together in this catalogue reside in leading public and private collections in Europe and Japan and evoke a fascinating period when theater, art, and poetry were essential elements of social and cultural life.

                        Book Description

Images from the World Between is an engaging survey of circus imagery in twentieth-century American art. In her introductory essay, curator Donna Gustafson chronicles the history of the American circus, showing how and why it came to be an important subject for American art. Through a discussion of a wide range of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs, Gustafson examines how the circus has been represented both as a microcosm of society and as an alternative reality. Some artists have been drawn to the abstract beauty of the circus ring, tent, and performances. Others have immortalized individual performers such as trapeze artist Alfredo Codona, animal trainer Clyde Beatty, and aerialist Lillian Lietzel for their physical prowess, grace, and courage. Still others have focused on the darker aspects of circus life, such as the danger inherent in many of the performances and the appeal of the grotesque.

The book accompanies an exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts. Among the artists discussed are Diane Arbus, George Bellows, Rhona Bitner, Alexander Calder, John Stuart Curry, Charles Demeuth, Walt Kuhn, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Lisette Model, and Bruce Nauman. In addition to Gustafson’s, the book contains essays by Karal Ann Marling on the postwar revival of interest in circus motifs and on the clown in popular culture, by Ellen Handy on the circus in twentieth-century photography, by Lee Siegel on the circus in twentieth-century literature, and by Eugene R. Gaddis on A. Everett "Chick" Austin’s collection and exhibition of paintings with circus themes. As director of the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Ringling Museum of Art, and as a performing magician, Austin united the worlds of art and the circus.

Nay-sayers aside, this is a quick read that puts things in perspective. It gets you thinking, and that's what a book like this is supposed to do!

                          2 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2001-04-08

In the introduction, the authors state that their thesis is that we've finally achieved a "critical mass" of computing power and have finally overcome the productivity paradox of the computer age. Unfortunately, the following chapters basically ramble on without direction and never address this origninal thesis.

These guys have a cool approach to technology. They understand it and are actually users (where possible) and it seems in the know (where not)!

They are like a couple of teenagers - they embrace technology for useability and functionality's sake genuinely impressed and enthusiastic by "Wow" stuff, but able to cut through the "salesy" clutter that tends to dupe journalists. The autnors have great insight into where technology is headed and what the future holds!

Authors Pat McGrew and Bill McDaniel have managed to intelligently and enjoyably synthesize the effects of technological changes on our everyday lives. Rather than just a recitation of different technologies past and present, Critical Mass asks the What if? and What then? questions that allow the reader the treat of glimpsing possible and probable futures. Through the use of succinct historical perpsectives and delightful references, the reader is left smiling as the whole mind-boggling picture falls into place. As an added bonus, websites are listed when referred to, next to the text, so one does not have to go thumbing back and forth to an appendix. If only all books would follow suit. Not to be missed!

                          5 out of 5 stars A must-read tour-de-force!.......2001-02-23

Authors Pat McGrew and Bill McDaniel have written a highly engaging work which successfully makes sense out of the technological sea-changes rocking our world. Grabbing the reader by the collar, Critical Mass provides an informed perspective on where those changes have taken us, and where we are headed next. Rather than a mere laundry-list of technical advances, this work relates these changes to the fabric of everyday existence. Drawing on extensive experience in the fields of software, technical writing and journalism, McGrew and McDaniel integrate and extrapolate as only they can. What might have been an unwieldy topic in lesser hands is served admirably here. This book never talks down, nor does it talk over the head of the reasonably informed reader. The foreword alone is worth the price. Not to be missed.

Multi-millionaire businessman and life coach, Henry A. Penix shares how his life of pain, poverty, and misdirection, became one filled with love, financial freedom, purpose, and fulfillment in every aspect of life. Often times people desire and dream about having success in every area of their life, but they don't have any idea how to get there. In a practical way, Penix teaches how to discover and then accelerate your destiny. This book will relate to the person who may be at a directionless point in their life, as well as the person who seems to have it all but is unhappy and unfulfilled.

"Of all the success stories I've heard, I can only think of few that carry the impact that Henry Penix's does. Hearing about the journey he and his wife made to get where they are today, really touched me personally. Accelerate Your Destiny reveals Henry's heart…His life is a tremendous testimony!"

                                    5 out of 5 stars My Lifesaver.......2002-04-27

This book was a lifesaver for me! It helped me to clarify my vision, of what I want to pursue in life, and then gave me the resources and tools to propel me towards it. I began to realize as I was reading, that my vision and goals were not concrete and that I lacked the confidence in myself to know I could achieve them.
As a woman, I loved the sections entitled, Laurie's Perspective, where the author's wife told her side of the story and the challenges they faced in walking toward their vision and in working together as a team. I was able to relate to the stories, especially many of their setbacks.
The workbook at the end of the book was a tremendous help to me. It gave me the opportunity to work through the same steps that the author and his wife followed in their own life to attain their goals and enjoy success. I now have a concrete vision that I focus on daily, that I keep before me throughout each day!

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2002-04-27

This book offered practical, yet extremely insightful advice on how to experience tremendous success in business, relationships and overall personal growth. The workbook, included at the back of the book, was very helpful and results oriented. It made me think of just about every area of my life, as it described a balanced lifestyle. There are so many books on the market that deal with success; however, this book is different. It was written by someone who actually experienced what they are teaching. After reading this book, I was confident that I could implement these same strategies for success in all areas of my life. Two thumbs up here!

A clutch of sparkling, wonderful excerpts from essays, fiction, and life shows that the experience of launching a child into the world unites many women and certainly some men. Sharp-tongued Dorothy Parker rails against the slipshod biology that makes carrying and delivering a child so time-consuming. Kitty writhes in childbirth in a scene from Anna Karenina. Novelist Toni Cade Bambara lampoons a wanna-be revolutionary who "castigated the Sisters to throw away the pill and hop to the mattresses and breed revolutionaries." And let us not forget W.C. Fields celebrating fatherhood: "Have wired all my intimate friends but have recd. no congratulations … I suppose they will come to & send me some telegrams soon."

Petrarch, the "father of Humanism", has exerted a striking impact on Early Modern intellectuals. This volume discusses how Petrarch's writings were understood, read and used by intellectuals, writers and artists from the 14th to the 17th century. Specialists from various disciplines (Italian, French, Neo-Latin, Dutch, Art History, History of Science) demonstrate that early modern reception is an extremely variable phenomenon; that it is largely dominated by the various discourses, paradigm's, literary genres, interests, needs and experiences of the users, and to a much lesser degree by the author's text, even if safeguarded with such great care and by such a famous author as in Petrarch's case. The volume is important for all scholars interested in literature, Humanism, Renaissance Studies, Petrarch, reception, history of reading and the intellectual history of the Early Modern Period.
