The Search for Modern China

Jonathan Spence, a distinguished historian of China, and his wife Annping Chin, both teachers at Yale, have compiled an extraordinary collection of rare historic photographs documenting Chinese history through the century. The book has intimate portraits and large crowd shots, scenes of routine daily life and of dramatic events, famous people and anonymous citizens. The story of China in this century is a dramatic one--from waning imperial power through the Nationalist republic to the Communist revolution and the rise of the People's Republic and its gigantic swings in ideology. The pictures chosen for this collection tell part of that story on a human level, and the authors provide a supplementary text that illuminates the photographic history.
Book Description
China is one of the great question marks on the world stage as we approach the third millennium. No longer a sleeping giant, neither is China a stable ally of the West. Economically it is an emerging powerhouse, and politically it is precariously balanced between the free market and military dictatorship. There could be no better time to try to understand China's history--the distance it has traveled, and where it may be going from here--than today.
The Chinese Century tells the story in over two hundred and fifty rare, eloquent photographs that have been chosen from archives, libraries, and private collections throughout China, Taiwan, and the West. Many of the photographs have never been seen outside China. Like a time machine, they let us see historical events that for most of us have existed until now only in words: the lives of the rural peasants and the privileged elite from the time of the Qing dynasty to the People's Republic, the opulence and squalor that the European colonial powers brought to China in their concession areas, the cities within Chinese cities that were inhabited exclusively by Europeans. Here are the rare photos of the Boxer Rebellion and the Rape of Nanking, the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. There are quirky moments, as well, such as American soldiers during the Second World War eating their K rations with chopsticks, and private photographs of Mao Zedong covered in river mud after a leisurely swim.
The photographs are paired with a stunning historical text by one of the West's most respected China scholars, Jonathan D. Spence, writing here for the first time with his wife, Annping Chin. The narrative traces the nation's disintegration into civil and world war, Communist revolution, and its slow reemergence as a military and economic superpower. Focusing on the lives of ordinary Chinese as well as on the towering figures such as Chiang Kai-shek and Meo Zedong, Spence weaves an intricate and fascinating social, political, and military history.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Informative Work!.......2003-04-08
Overall, I found this book to be very informative and fun to read. Being a UCSD student and taking many classes pertaining to Asia, I read many works by Spence. By far, I have enjoyed reading every one of his works. This particular book in my opinion is the best of Spence's works-- though he cooperated with another author. Spence's works is a testament to his ability to present fact in a dynamic way. In this case, Spence uses photographs to augment his work.
And concerning the individual from Grand Rapids, Missouri (2nd Review). This individual is thoroughly ignorant and racist to say that the Chinese people "lost the sense of dignity, creativity, and are still today refusing to advance their own country by isolating from the rest of the world." China has continually engaged in the free market arena since it opened up commercially in the 1980s. According to most experts, China has the fastest growing economy in the world. On another note, this individual fails to note that there is a level of corruption in every country. Yes, we Americans have seen our fair share of corrupt cops and politicians! Overall, this individual's remark does no justice for the merit of Spence's work, and is an unjustified insult to the Chinese community.
excellent survey.......2002-03-27
This book is an invaluable resource for scholars and amateurs alike. The introductory essay orients the reader, and the photographs tell their own story.
The "reviewer" below this is clearly insane and/or has an ax to grind. As any of their Yale students could tell you, Spence and Chin are both world-class scholars whose passion is narrating the stories of modern China accessibly, entertainingly, and provocatively.
Excellent book.......1999-04-20
It's a surprisingly thorough and sophisticated overview of China in the 20th century for a book that at first glance looks primarily like a picture book. The text is outstanding in itself and the pictures quite original. I recommend it to those with a rudimentary knowledge of Chinese history.
A highly recommended and entertaining history of China........1998-04-14
This is a fascinating story of the history of China of the last hundred years intelligently interwoven with 264 rare and entertaining photos that add a unique sense of reality to the history. The authors' in-depth understanding of key historical events in China during the last century, combined with the many well chosen photos interspersed throughout the text (some of a fairly grim nature), make this a much more readable and realistic history book versus the typical history book that usually contains just a few photos crammed together into a center section. This is an oversized 264 page book printed on high quality glossy heavy paper.

Book Description
With its white sandy beaches, lush green uplands, and near-perfect weather, the Hawaiian island of Maui is more than a picture postcard: it is a multi-million-dollar tourist attraction that repeatedly has been voted "best island in the world" by Conde Nast Traveler readers. Consider, then, the bumper sticker seen on residents' cars in recent years: "If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?"
From its modest beginnings in the prewar era, tourism has become the most important segment of Maui's economy since the 1970s. But as Mansel Blackford shows, it is also a devil's bargain. By switching the island's income base from sugar cane to condos, tourism has offered a solution to economic problems but has also placed an unanticipated strain on Maui's infrastructure and made unexpected demands of its residents. Now as roads and sewers have reached their limits and escalating property values have ousted long-timers, the growth of the "visitor industry" has forced the people of Maui to make difficult choices about the future development of their island.
Fragile Paradise chronicles the growth--and the growing pains--of the tourist economy on Maui. Blackford takes us into the heart of this island paradise to reveal the complexity of economic and environmental issues, especially as perceived by Maui's residents over the past four decades. He examines issues surrounding land-use policies, water development, electrical power generation, and transportation-particularly the controversy over the expansion of the Kahului Airport. He then shows how these issues came together in the development of two communities: the booming resort area of South Maui and the agricultural Upcountry Maui. Blackford also reveals the human side of tourism, through interviews with islanders representing both sides of the growth issue.
Blackford's study shows how people living on a far western American frontier view their economic and physical environments and how they have sought to shape them. By addressing a number of crucial issues, from race and ethnicity to "quality of life" environmentalism, it offers a microcosm of the tourism industry that has implications for other travel destinations and for the economic future of the Pacific Rim.
This book is part of the Development of Western Resources series.

Book Description
The book that took the mystery out of economics and put free will back in. When Adam Smith pioneered modern economics in the eighteenth century, it was a branch of philosophy. By the close of the nineteenth century, economists had discovered the usefulness of mathematical tools from classical mechanics, and by the end of the twentieth visions of clicking pool balls reigned supreme. Except for one insightful critic: George Brockway. First writing for The New Leader and then in this seminal text, Brockway skewered mainstream economists who assumed away the free will of participants in the economy. This book establishes an economics in which men and women are not ceramic spheres subject only to cold, mathematical forecasts, but free human beings who are responsible for their actions and can find in this critical supposition the foundations of mores, morals, and morale. Now thoroughly revised, it is for anyone who has suspected that the economy is too important to be left to economists.

Amazingly Insightful.......2004-07-19
This is truly an amazing book. Gale and the other editor (Janet Rothenberg Pack) have assembled an outstanding bunch of essays dealing with various problems in urban affairs, including "Tax Incentives and the City" and "Does Gentrification Harm the Poor?" You will learn SO much from reading these essays. Truly some of the best writing on urban affairs I've read- and I've been teaching the subject at a large midwestern university for 30 years.

- the role of government-sponsored enterprises in providing financial support for U.S. housing;
- the way GSEs affect mortgage rates and market liquidity;
- effects on lower-income, underserved housing markets of the affordable housing goals set by GSEs;

Book Description
Leningrad (now reverted to its pre-1914 name of St Petersburg) was surrounded by German forces in 1941 and cut off from the rest of Russia. It was besieged for nearly three years, the great city's population suffering terribly in the bitter cold of the Russian winter. Over a million men, women and children died of starvation and hypothermia, but the city fought on and never surrendered. In 1943 the Russian army broke through to link up with the garrison and end the longest, bloodiest siege of the Second World War.
Customer Reviews:
A "must have" reference book.......2007-01-17
Books about the Leningad siege usualy deal mainly with the human aspect of the event, presenting collections of personal accounts and experiences, like Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 days: The Siege of Leningrad". Fortunately, for those interested in the military campaing, this book presents an almost day by day narrative of the operations on the various fronts, with statistcs and comments on the stategies and commanders. And all this without being a tedious reading. This book is a "must have" military and historic reference about the subject.
Good information marred by some poor writing .......2006-07-16
In `The Siege of Leningrad' David Glantz is successful in providing a succinct and informative account of the military aspects of this battle. By drawing on Soviet sources Glantz describes how the Soviet military successfully defended the city against German attack and eventually lifted the siege. A particular strength of this book is that Glantz gives considerable attention to the failed Soviet attempts to lift the siege and highlights the terrible price the Soviets paid in the fighting around the city.
The book is, however, let down by the poor quality of much of Glantz's writing. Many passages are confusing or `jumpy' and some accounts of battles read like a shopping list of unit and place names. Due to his focus on the Soviets Glantz's accounts of the German objectives and strategies can also be unclear. For example, it is never made clear whether the Germans were serious about capturing Leningrad after 1941 and Hitler's role in the battle is confusing. I also found the number of maps in the book to be somewhat unsatisfactory - while each chapter has a clear and useful map the book would have benefited from the addition of maps depicting the major battles described in the text.
While I'd strongly recommend `The Siege of Leningrad' to readers looking for a military history of how the Soviet military defended the city and eventually lifted the siege, it's not successful as a general history and should be avoided by non-specialist readers.
A tale of heroism and tragedy.......2005-05-09
The Siege of Leningrad 1941-1944 is the incredible true story of the German Army's three-year assault on Leningrad. A tale of heroism and tragedy, shelling and starvation (nearly 4,000 of the city's inhabitants starved to death on Christmas Day alone), The Siege of Leningrad recounts the details of a turning point of World War II. Intensively researched, and enhanced with a handful of black-and-white photographs, The Siege of Leningrad 1941-1944 is a welcome addition to library and personal world history shelves and reference collections.
Great Introduction to the Seige.......2002-04-18
This book is unlike Glantz's books on Kursk, Kharkov, or Mars in that it is a slim, larger-sized hardback with a lot of photos and color maps. He also doesn't go into a large amount of detail. This scope makes it a lot easier to understand - while I understood battles that Erickson (in "The Road to Stalingrad") describes but I was confused about. Also, it's a good primer before jumping into "The 900 Days" by Salisbury.
Col.Glantz's another excellent book.......2002-03-01
Although the Leningrad encirclement and the battle around the city was one of the biggest tragedic drama in WW II. it has been a relatively neglected subject . Mr.Salisbury's book was the only one which sheded the light on this tragic human conflict in English speaking nations.Daivd Glantz's "900 days of terror "is the one which can be equalled to Mr. Salisbury's "the 900days"
Since I read "When titians clashed" , I 've become a fan of Col.Glantz's eastern front sagas . this one is somewhat less scholarly than his previous books (in particular ,the ones published from Frank Cass pub)however, It is suprisingly readable,informative and well-balanced.col Glantz also provides the OB of Soviet forces,exhaustive notes and valuable date on casualties.there are also many unpublished pictures and wonderful maps
I've heard that Col.Glantz's next book from Kansas university press would also be the one on the Battle of Leningrad. I hope it will be published soon.
