The discovery of and excavations at Pompeii in the second half of the eighteenth century not only provided historians with a trove of information about ancient Roman civilization but also fired artists' imaginations and inaugurated the vogue for the "Pompeian style" that so influenced the West
in the nineteenth century.
This book reproduces, along with commentary, Le case i monumenti di Pompeii (1854) of Fausto and Felice Niccolini, the first work to present completely and systematically all the public and private buildings so far excavated in Pompeii. It features the wondrous watercolors the Niccolinis created to
document Pompeii and is thus a beautiful and essential tool in understanding the excavated remains themselves and how the modern archaeologists perceived and recorded the ancient world.
These magnificently reproduced drawings of the excavations are accompanied by texts that explain the documents by the Niccolinis, as well as the evolution of the Pompeian style in Europe, the pictorial representation of Pompeii in the nineteenth century from engravings to photographs, and the
evolving styles of archaeological documentation.

Based on field research carried out over a two year period, this book describes processes of transformation that took place over a fifteen year period in five European universities. Five common features identified - described as "organizational pathways of transformation" - are highlighted and used to frame the case-study accounts. These pathways consist of: a strengthened steering core; an extended developmental periphery; a diversified funding base; a stimulated academic heartland; and an entrepreneurial culture. Taken together, these elements help universities overcome the growing imbalance between environmental demands and university capacity to respond that is now occurring in universities internationally. As universities come under greater pressure to change their traditional character and become more innovative and entrepreneurial, the successful implementation of new managerial perspectives is important if they are to succeed. Reconciling these changes with traditional academic values provide the concepts on which the case studies are based.

Save your money.......2007-01-08
The vague and insultingly simplistic ideas on these cards inspire the opposite of creativity. Slick packaging makes for a pretty product, but the substance is not worthwhile; I'm returning mine. Maisel has a lot of worthwhile writing -- check out his _Fearless Creating_ if you haven't already -- but give this gimmick a miss.
Focus on Using Your Native Intelligence, Wit, & Intuition.......2004-10-15
After a couple of weeks of using the "Everyday Creative" set of cards, I moved on to "Everyday Smart: 30 Ways to Spark Your Inner Genius," which contains thirty different ways to prompt one's inner genius. Author Eric Maisel encourages people to "manifest your native intelligence, your intuitive abilities, and your critical thinking skills." Looking at one of these cards each day over a period of a month was a real eye-opener. Each card concentrates upon one specific area ("Grow smart by strategizing," "Grow smart by inviting the elegant solution," etc.), and the reader is invited to think about ways to be smart and to use intelligence, wit, and intuition.
By turns playful and serious, the cards are exactly what Maisel bills them to be: evocative, beautiful, and useful. I also found that they serve as excellent affirmations for the day. I highly recommend this kit for anyone focusing on art, writing, politics-or any other topic or subject that requires creativity, originality, or problem-solving. ~Lori L. A striking reminder of why schools must nurture peace.......2005-05-25
Aline Wolf's little book, beautifully illustrated, is particularly suitable reading for teachers doing peace education in their classrooms. While I do not yet own this book (it was loaned me by a fellow teacher), I plan to purchase my own copy and also buy copies for other teachers.
Peace education requires a little reflection on the part of the teacher. I hope the teacher who wrote the negative review of this book will re-read it and give the contents some thought, especially since he/she is a Montessori guide. The ideas in the book are a definite part of the Montessori philosophy.
I thank Aline Wolf for her thoughtful work.
Peaceful Education??.......2004-03-26
I recently found this book mysteriously placed on my desk. I am a teacher and am immensely bothered by this book. It proposes that it is a book of peaceful education, but relates public education to producing mindless, automatons of society, proposes that using machinery causes idleness and avarice, and the picture following the previous ideas, in this picture book, is of children in Nazi uniforms with a nazi flag in the background. I HIGHLY encourage people to reconsider the use of this book to teach peaceful education. This is not an accurate representation of Montessori principles, or peace education.
