    Book Description

Houses in Time is like no other book on New Mexico architecture. While it pays homage to the legacy of adobe, the book also acknowledges the role of newcomers who built houses in a dizzying array of styles. Featured in handsome photographs accompanied by brief, informative essays are eighty-eight houses from all over the state, beginning with prehistoric pueblo dwellings and encompassing adobes, bungalows, ranch houses, and a variety of unique structures, the most recent of which are a passive solar rammed earth dwelling and an owner-built house constructed with the help of Habitat for Humanity. Also included are a glossary and bibliographic essay.

This beautiful book documents New Mexico's houses, from the adobe, to the Victorian, to the miner's cottage, and the tract house, chronicling nearly a thousand years of the state's remarkable past.

      Book Description

Raymond Depardon is an exceptional artist, and his photographs capture the life of simple human beings. Whether his subjects are the prostitutes of Saigon or small children in Somalia and Afghanistan, or the veiled men of the Sahara desert or passersby in bustling cities such as New York, Cairo or La Paz, Raymond Depardon does not bother to strive for aesthetic effect or anecdote. Instead he relies on his miraculous ability to be right at home wherever his camera accompanies him. This is a sweeping collection across many continents, revealing a fascinating world through the eye of Depardon, photographer and filmmaker.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful volume of Depardon's work.......2005-05-17

I can't recommend this volume highly enough. Raymond Depardon is a tremendous photographer. This book represents his travels around the world (Vietnam, Eastern Europe, U.S., Africa) and weighs in at more than 500 pages. Considering that, the book is put together well and is not too bulky to actually look at. The prints are so beautiful and evocative, you will find yourself coming back to them again and again. Depardon is not as well known as some other Magnum photographers, and his books are rather difficult to get hold of in the U.S., but he is worth tracking down. Depardon is also a great filmmaker - if you get the chance to see any of his work, do so. This book is a must have for fans of B&W photojournalism.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone I've shown this book to says "Wow".......1998-12-30

Depardon's peaceful images totally consumed my attention for hours. This book contains several hundred b&w photos from his travels all over the world in the last 20 years, packed into a smallish format softcover, which can be a little inconvenient to page through, but on the other hand it's wonderful to have such a huge range of images.

            Book Description

This book focuses on the attempts to "green" economies in advanced industrial societies, from the early debates of the 1970s through the new approach which has emerged in this decade. The essence of this approach, encapsulated in the phrase, "ecological modernisation", is that giving more attention to the environment enhaces economic growth because increased environmental protection creates conditions that are conducive to long-term growth. Tackling pollution and steering resources towards improving environmental conditions thus provides a stepping stone to a different kind of economic growth. The book draws from original research to analyze ecological modernisation, its nature and the extent of its impact. Linking empirical work with the theoretical, three additional chapters which look at the connections to modernity, the use of economic instruments, and models of state/market relations as seen from different schools of political thought.

Just read 'The Compass and The Clock' and was motivated by it to do something I've wanted to do but was afraid to try.

The book is an interesting concept. It melds a parable about time and direction with an approach to personal leadership that helps you go after something you've always wanted to achieve.

Very powerful message and a quick and easy read. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK ON THE BONEYARD.......2003-04-02

Having lived around the boneyard for a number of years this book helped me remember some of it. My father would and still passes by alot of the airplanes today on his way to work or what ever. It was interesting to read it from an Englishman's point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the Boneyard.......2001-08-16

This is a worthy successor to Philip D. Chinnery's previous pictorial essays on the Boneyard (1987's "Desert Boneyard", and 1989's "Desert Airforce"...both out-of-print). The format is larger, and the quality of the photos is excellent. There's also a tantalizing mix of aircraft...you can hardly wait to turn the page and see what glorious old bird is baking in the hot desert sun on the next page. You really get a feel for the place, and you see more on these pages than you'd ever get to see in real life; mostly because the tours don't take you everywhere Chinnery was able to go. You'll see F-105s, F-102s, F-100s, F-4s, A-7s, F-111s, B-52s, even A-10s, C-141s, F-14s, F-15s and F-16s. Plus other, much older aircraft, helicopters, utility aircraft and aircraft types too numerous to mention. There's a fine section on the early history of the base, and descriptions of the storage process, too. I think you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars A great coffee table book.......2001-04-17

This book has much detailed information on the history of the storage yard at Davis-Monthan AFB, in Tucson Arizona. Seeing has to how I am an aircraft nut (Mostly military), I got a kick out of the fact that all the pictures were color! And the photos are almost all of aircraft. Rare aircraft included are the XB-19, B-36, RA-5C, C-133 and the NB-52E. The only problem is that just one photo of each of the above aircraft is in the book. In addition, the book also has details about how the aircraft are preserved in storage and what uses they have at the yard. Not all are scrapped or salvaged of parts, but some go on to civilian lives as firebombers or transports and some are sold to warbird collectors. For example, The Pima Air-Space Museum has many aircraft that are on loan from D-M (Then again, it is very near the base). This has to be the best book ever on the place that is mistakenly called "The Boneyard".

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but sad pictures of retired aircraft.......1998-03-03

This book is a valuable resource for aircraft modelers and aviation enthusiasts. It contains many excellent pictures of aircraft, often in service paint schemes, preserved at Davis-Montham AFB in Tucson, AZ. Each plane is a moment of history frozen in time, poised at the end of a valuable service career but not yet broken up for scrap. Many of the pictures make you sad to think of once-proud aircraft, now cast off unwanted. Although this book does not puport to be anything but a documentation of the career of the Boneyard at Davis-Montham, I would have appreciated more detail on the aircraft themselves. However, I highly recommend this book for modelers as it provides color pictures of many aircraft not often seen in other publications.

                      5 out of 5 stars Strange and compelling - a unique book.......2000-06-10

This is a very beautiful book. It abounds with treasuered monuments and the marvels of nature across the globe. It is a book for conservationists, sponsered by UNESCO and as such it takes a turn that most books of its kind do not.

What struck me immediately about this book was that the pictures are "different". After a few minutes I realized why. These pictures succeed in making all of these glorious sights somehow more real, more tangible and infinitely more accessible. Sometimes the traditional view is taken from another angle and it shows the section of the building that is crumbling. Often there are people photographs where it's uncommone to see them. Overall, the color is softer, more human than most large picture books and the result is a very beautiful book.

The book is divided by country with informative text in each section. Bear in mind that I bought this as a picture book. Yet I found myself reading the text over and over.

Each item is explained with its location, a description, and its significance, but that is such a dry way to explain this book.

The book has history and life on every page.

UNESCO is dedicated to saving so many things. I will try just to list some of the gorgeous items in these pages: Machu Piccu, Iguazu Falls, Lord Howe Island, The Mausoleum of the first Qin Emperor, Mon St. Michel, Tikal, Ellora Caves, Darien National Park in Panama, Chan Chan, Auschwitz, Tower of Elem, Garajonay National Park, Carthage.

This is a very stirring book. I wish I could do it justice

Here is a book which leads us into a world of beauty in all its glorious diversity. This homage to the splendor of nature and to the genius of mankind presents beauty wrought by nature and beauty wrought by human needs. To read it is to travel through the high canopies of age-old forests, to alight upon the spires of great cathedrals, to wander the wide savannah or the mountain gorge alongside magnificent animals, and to drink in the poetry of ancient sites.

                        Product Description

Frank Benson, a pivotal artist of the American Impressionist movement had, it would seem, three great loves in his long and productive life: his family, his art, and the sporting life. As a boy, Benson dreamed of being an ornithological illustrator. In mid-life, after an extremely successful career as a portraitist and painter of plein air canvases, he returned to the wildfowl and sporting subjects that were his lifelong passion. Over the next forty years, in etching, lithography, watercolor, and oil and wash, he portrayed birds beloved since childhood, scenes of his hunting and fishing expeditions, and still lives of incomparable delicacy. Whether painting a hunter setting out decoys, a wash of geese by moonlight, a watercolor of a companion poised to gaff a salmon, or an etching of a group of ducks silently gliding in for a landing, Benson conveyed the joy and beauty of a sportsman's life.

This is the first book to concentrate on the aspect of Benson's career that won him both national and international renown as well as financial prosperity. Written by Faith Andrews Bedford, who also wrote the definitive monograph on his career, it draws on a rich store of family memories, diaries, letters and archives to create an intimate portrait of a man who was not only a successful artist but a consummate sportsman. From Benson's student days at the Boston Museum School, where he eventually became a teacher and director, to his frequent trips to his farm house on Cape Cod, where he spent countless days hunting, fishing, and sketching; from his annual salmon fishing trips to his many shooting expeditions in Canada, the Atlantic coast, the American South and the Rockies, this book touches on every aspect of his life and art. When he died in 1951, Benson had garnered every award of his day, the respect of his peers, and the admiration and affection of a devoted public. Here is a book that presents his sporting art, and his life, in all its forms and rich variety. We offer it with pride and enthusiasm.

5 out of 5 stars The Sporting Art of Frank W. Benson.......2001-06-20

The Maine Antique Digest (Sam Pennington, Editor mad@maine.com) wrote this neat review and I am sharing it with everyone who might want to know more about this great book.

This handsomely produced, definitive book is replete with reproductions of paintings, etchings, and lithographs of waterfowl and related works of Frank W. Benson, a pivotal artist of the American Impressionist movement. Benson's accurate depictions of birds have commanded high prices, and rightly so. This book will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of art collectors.

Faith Andrews Bedford gathered diverse and firsthand source material. She covers Benson's career by melding his primary interests: his family, his art, and the sporting life, not to mention his lifelong passion for birds. By interlacing her text with commentary from interviews with Benson's family, diaries, letters, photographs, and historical articles, she creates a lively, immediate flavor.

Chapter three, "A Sense of Place," begins by telling how the Benson family first visited North Haven island in Maine's Penobscot Bay in June 1901. They eventually bought Wooster Farm and summered there for about 40 years. I have a particular fondness for that island and was transported by the descriptions of their initial visits and their farm on Crabtree Point. To exemplify how neatly Bedford packs information, here is a quote from early in that chapter: "Benson's North Haven paintings of his family were praised by critics and collectors for capturing the `joyous gaiety' and `holiday mood' of life on the island. They sold almost as soon as they were seen by the public...Benson was not an indoor man by nature and far preferred the `life outside the studio.' Although his wife and daughters enjoyed the theater and music and for decades held the same two seats for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he did not often accompany them. Nor did he enjoy the confines of church. He felt the place to worship God and respect His handiwork was through nature."

There is mention also of their tennis court at the farm, interest in golf, and of course the birds and fishing. Bedford adds other significant information about how the island affected Benson's art: "It was to become the site of many milestones, not only in his family life but in his art as well. Benson began his etching career on North Haven. Originally, this aspect of his work was merely a diversion, an experiment." This taste gives an inkling of the abundant information compiled. It is clearly presented and a good biographical resource.

Benson lived a long, fruitful life. Bedford, who has become a scholar capable of making such statements, says, "Benson was, perhaps, that rarest of humans, a happy man. Not that he ever rested on his laurels, not that he did not look constantly for challenges...He had reaped rewards and financial success from his art, had won fame and recognition in his own lifetime-something he realized few artists ever achieved...In Benson's own words, the secret to both tranquil enjoyment and success was in doing what you love."

3 out of 5 stars Best information, worse photographs.......2006-07-27

This book is "the" resource for information in the waterfowl. I have never read a book that was so complete and that went so deep into a specie of waterfowl. I don't think anything else exist that match this reference. But I was truely disapointed by the photographs in the book. Most are badly exposed and have blown out highlight. Being a bird photographer myself, I was shocked by how badly exposed most of the photographs were. The common eider for exemple don't have any detail in the white area and that is just plain pure white. Most photograph with white have this problem.

Ok so the book is not really about the photography of waterfowl and it is more about learning in deep about each specie...so in that regard I thought it was an amazing book. However because of the poor quality of the photographs I gave it only 3 stars. I feel that at this price, they could have put a bit more effort into providing decent photographs.

If you don't care much about the visual and you only want the information about each specie, then you will love this book as it is the most complete book on the subject that I ever seen. Everything is in there.

I must say that I am stunned by the art of Terry Redlin. I bought both this book and his second book "Master of Memories" and seldom have I seen such quality in both his attention to details and icredible harmonic and peaceful style. Both books are filled with high scans (most og them are printed full color on each side) pictures of Terry Redlins paintings. So I highly recommend both books from Terry Redlin for the art lovers that likes their art rich and varried with details and "better than photo" paintings from our lovely earth and its life.
