The biggest problem with living in an old commercial building is light. Lofts may not have skylights; many commercial spaces only have windows along one side; and, since sunlight provides the major source of illumination, industrial and more modern commercial spaces can be--and often are--downright dingy.

Helped Start the Research of My Dream.......2000-09-01

My dream is to live in a Loft. And this book helped me get started on my research. I have already labeled and marked my favorite floor plans and styles. I am currently looking for a book that contains more information about costs and maintenance of lofts. Otherwise it's a great book to get an idea of lofts, what styles you may like and the history of lofts.

Coverage of Historical and Early Loft Treatment.......1998-10-12

As many readers of this title I was looking for interesting, creative, innovative use of loft space. The piece seems complete in its coverage of origin and early treatment. Lofts in several international urban settings are described and pictured. Floor plans for a representative number are presented at the conclusion. By now it has become fairly dated. Present day materials and treatments clearly be an important addition. Surely there has been great progress in the 12 years since the book was released. Secondly, "adventurous" lofts were not prevalent. A few several portrayals were bland and unexciting. However, the work seems to be one of the few available resources for those interested in the development of loft space.

Robert Smithson conceptual impact carries through in this book.

His perceptions regarding the use of nature as an art element are captured by his lucid use of mirrors and simple on-site constructions.

The short and concise quotations add an additional layer of meaning to the photographs.

This book seeks to promote a new spiritual approach to organizational leadership that goes beyond visionary management to a new focus on the spiritual for both leader and led. Spiritual leadership is seen here as a dynamic, interactive process. Successful leadership in the new American workplace, therefore, is dependent on a recognition that leadership is a relationship, not a skill or a personal attribute. Leaders are leaders only as far as they develop relationships with their followers, relationships that help all concerned to achieve their spiritual, as well as economic and social, fulfillment.

Can "spirituality" and "steward" replace "profit "and boss........2000-06-23

Gilbert Fairholm's book is less a path than a tight rope into a potential new world where spiritual and material values are allies. Fairholm's book clearly indicates how the meaning of work for many American managers and workers extends beyond bringing bread to the table. His target audience is therefore the managers, owners, students and heads (perhaps even stockholders) of the businesses and corporations for which they work. The thin line he walks is between the prevailing mentality of the world of business today and the world of higher values that he wishes to introduce more directly into its everyday practices and understanding.

The task is not an easy one. Fairholm's book does a fine job of laying out a vast varitey of issues and approaches a "spiritually" inclined leadership could develop into practice as well as fundemental spirtual understanding, such as business a stewardship, that would represent the conceptual foundation for building such new corporate behavior.

Fairholm's greatest problem is one of translating spiritual concerns and approaches to the language of business as spoken today. The problem is that popular "business book speak" has taken some critical concepts such as "leadership" and "vision" and so watered them down that one wonders if the words are capable any longer to convey the deeper meanings to which Fairholm is striving to related. Some words, like "profit" are noticeable avoided as almost too incompatable to deal with.

In the end this book deserves a good reading as a serious attempt to begin discussion of a major reorientation of work as we understanbd it today. To carry this cause futher, Fairholm, or others, may have to delve much deeper into the nature of not only "would be" spiritual organizations but the idea a spiritually friendly economic system as well.

It would be easy to superficailly dismiss Fairholm's book as a noble but unrealistic attempt to recast an anvil with an angel. To resist such quick dismissal it might be useful to reflect on the extent to which the United States was in fact established by execuitve personailites and men of commerce with deep spiritual commitments both personal and social. In this regards the revolution lurching behind Fairholm's facade of business talk may be less a future revolution than a call for a re-expression of an enduring if often obscured aspect of America. Fairholm book deserves reading as a first step out of the shadows of our present excessively ego based economic and managerial systems. Take the chance and walk the tight-rope with him

A quick and dirty summary of Normandy.......2002-09-13

We are taking a group of graduate students and professors to Normandy this year for a staff ride of the D-Day landings. This will be the required book for everyone, but supplemented by a long list of more detailed books. It is fabulous for a quick overview of what happened, and my favorite thing about Osprey books is the maps. The maps are worth the price by themselves. Not as good as other Osprey books I have used but still well worth the price as a visual supplement to your further readings.

Re-named reprint.......1999-07-28

Excellent Osprey book, however it is a reprint of the 1990 campaign series book with a new cover. If you have never bought this book before under the old title it is worth buying. Very detailed maps and drawings along with good quality photographs.

A good (if not biased) story of Normandy.......1999-07-20

As with most Osprey books, Normandy 1944 offers a concise description of its namesake. I was disappointed, however, with the POV of the author -- decidly British, thus focusing on General Montgomery and Caen. I recommend it for those who wish to learn about the battle outside of the Omaha and Utah beacheads.
