Wedding.......2006-03-14
The extraordinary photographs in this book were compiled by Barbara Norfleet in the course of an exhaustive search through the negative files of photographic studios all over America. She examined millions of negatives over a period of several years, selecting the best photographs for a major exhibition. The "Wedding" exhibition opened in 1976 at the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University, where it was an immediate success. Attendace was heavy, and the Harvard Crimson reported: "Wedding makes not only artistic statements, but social ones as well." The following year, the photographs moved to New York's International Center for Photography. The Christian Science Monitor reported that it was one of the most popular exhibitions in the history of the ICP, and in its review of the show, said: "The photographs in this show astonish with their ability to project the universal emotion behind the institutional one."
Now for the first time this superb collection of photographs is available in book form, providing a permanent record of the exhibition for all those who were fortunate enough to witness it, and a delightful discovery for those experiencing these photographs forthe first time.

Best Senator Money can buy.......2003-01-24
What an entrepreneur! Get elected to the US Senate, marry an ambitious woman and put her in the business of lobbying congress and government agencies. She gets the dough and her husband delivers. Is this legal?
Unique Insight into the Entrepreneural Process.......2001-12-03
This book both educates and inspires the reader. The varied personal stories bring home the point that success and contribution can be very complementary. I plan to give the book to my associates and my college bound sons. It is reqired reading for everyone with a dream and a desire to make a difference.
Tales of those who do big things and good things everyday..........2001-10-18
None of the people in Craig Hall's book had anything handed to them. Early on they found and harnessed the passion to succeed without forgetting the community. THE RESPONSIBLE ENTREPRENEUR goes beyond the secrets of success by addressing the pitfalls, weaknesses and stereotypes of being an entreprenuer. It's full of stories about tough individuals with big hearts AND the competitive instincts and ability to "pull the trigger" when need be. Whether these men and women give back through the services their company provides or from the profits they've earned, this book shows that all of us can do big things and good things everyday.
Informative and entertfaining insights and anecdotes........2001-10-04
The Responsible Entrepreneur provided me with a new perspective on how entrepreneurs can commit their time and efforts to improve their communities, while also having all the material indicia of their success. I had never before thought about the myths, traits, and secrets of successful entrepreneurship described in this book or how creative entrepreneurs can do so much more for society than merely donating money to charities. The chapters on Ambassador Richard Schifter's experiences, the formation of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, and Steve Mariotti's decision to teach others how to succeed after being mugged were particularly inspiring to me and said volumes about how one person can change the world for many people.
An insightful and inspiring read.......2001-10-04
Craig Hall provides insightful and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs that are valuable to both the novice and the expert. His reporter's eye for detail and perspective as a successful entrepreneur set this book apart from so many on the shelves. The Responsible Entrepreneur would make a great gift for any friend or business associate. There's something inside for everyone.
Book Description
Scholarly yet readable, this second volume examines the major content areas where family life education is practiced: marriage enrichment, parent education, sex education, and aging, among others. In each section, the authors offer a critical and succinct introduction to the subject area, provide literature sources, and discuss current educational practices. They also address issues of age, gender, and ethnicity. In addition, the authors identify areas where further work needs to be done and offer suggestions for new directions, thus assisting program developers and leaders in the improvement of their practice.

"Parenting is a wholly human practice, and a holy one." This description of parenting comes from the Preface of How to Be a Jewish Parent by Anita Diamant, with Karen Kushner. At a time when statistics predict continued dilution of Jewish identity, when many "discussions of Jewish parenting seem like a last-ditch effort to preserve an endangered way of life," Diamant and Kushner instead consider parenting to be the project of "raising healthy, joyful human beings within our rich, diverse, life-giving tradition." The first part of the book, "Parents as Teachers," describes how to create Jewish spaces within the home, how to involve children in a Jewish community, and how to teach them about the Jewish calendar. The second part of the book, "Ages and Stages," addresses the particular challenges of raising children in various age groups. And the third section, "Modern Life," speaks to some particularly challenging situations, such as physical, mental, and learning disabilities. Throughout, Diamant and Kushner combine insights from scripture, psychology, education, and everyday experience. Like Diamant's previous books, How to Be a Jewish Parent arrives as the definitive reference in its field. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
How can I make the holidays interesting and meaningful to my child?
Should I send my child to a Jewish day school? A Jewish summer camp?
What kind of synagogue is best for my family?
How do I plan a family trip to Israel or add Jewish heritage sites when traveling around the country or around the world?
If you are, or hope to be, a Jewish parent in more than name, you have a lot of decisions to make. So many choices! But you can have no better guide to this wealth of opportunity than Anita Diamant.
The author of popular books on Jewish weddings and baby rituals, Diamant now joins with family therapist Karen Kushner to help you through the next steps. They give creative, practical answers to these and many other questions, provide guidance on how to foster Jewish decision making for children of all ages, describe how to make your home a "Jewish space," and explain the importance of synagogue membership, holiday celebrations, community service, and other family activities.
Diamant and Kushner draw from many sources to describe the practices, customs, and values that go into creating a Jewish home. They combine insights from Jewish tradition with contemporary developmental thinking about how children learn and grow. They provide addresses (including Web sites) where you can find specific information and other resources. And since experience may be the best of all teachers, they share their own and other parents' stories and observations. For Diamant and Kushner, the number-one goal of How to Be a Jewish Parent is to give parents (and grandparents) guideposts to raising joyful children within the rich tradition of the Jewish faith and culture. No Jewish family should be without it.
Customer Reviews:
you get more than you bargin for with this book !.......2007-02-21
i bought this book hoping to gain some insight into things i can do to make our household more 'jewish' and ways to guide our new baby to a life of 'jewishness' that we didn't have until we had her.
i thought this book would at least give me some ideas...and it does this plus so much more.
i have actually learned tons from just reading the first few chapters (with new baby -not alot of time for reading)...things that i never learned in my childhood about jewish traditions and prayers and holidays.
i even impressed my brother who married into an orthodox family when i recited the prayer for 'firsts' when he was with us when the baby saw her first snow.
i really feel much more confident that i can teach my daughter some valuable lessons that i hope will become a part of her life that will always be with her.
i recommend this book to those of us who just never got the 'jewish stuff' from our growing up and want to give their kids more than just bagels and lox.
it also gives us tools for answering so many of the questions that jewish kids will ask their parents, and i firmly believe that the way we answer these questions will make a difference in our kids level of commitment to their jewish heritage.
Solid tool for those who are learning while teaching.......2001-02-17
I have read most of this author's books, and I have found all to be quite helpful. Good guidelines for choosing camps, schools, and shuls.
A Great Start.......2000-09-10
This wonderful, accessible book is a great start for a new or not-so-new Jewish family. The explanations, historical accounts, resources, and suggestions are all shared with sensitivity and clarity for those not familiar with their Jewish heritage, but eager to learn so that they can transmit our memories and traditions to another generation. A "must buy" for Jewish parents who want to share Judaism with their children but are unsure or insecure about how to begin. It is also a great gift. Use it well.

5-star reference marred by key omissions........2006-08-05
Jane's is a recognition guide, and a fine one at that. It should be noted, however, that as a recognition guide, it is not a book about tanks and other fighting vehicles, so don't expect much text covering armored vehicle tactics, operations, capabilities, weapon systems, etc.
As a recognition guide, this book does provide sillouettes, line drawings, multiple color photographs, lists of key recognition figures and basic vehicle statistics in order to aid the reader in recognizing various modern armored fighting vehicles. Aslo included are lists of nations who currently use each model.
Surprisingly, not included in the latest version of the book are a handful of vehicles currently seeing extensive combat action and receiving a good deal of media coverage. These vehicles include the U.S. Army's Stryker wheeled APC (based on the Mowag Piranha and LAV-25), the Israeli Achzarit tracked "heavy" APC (based on the hull of the T-54 & T-55 MBT's), Puma tracked Engineer carrier, and low-instensity conflict tracked carriers Nakpadon and Nakpachon (all based on the chasis of the Centurion MBT).
All of the above are derivatives of pre-existing models which are covered by the book but, as in the case of the Israeli APC's, the modifications are so extensive as to make the resulting vehicles almost completely new in terms of components, performance, AND appearance. You've probably seen all of these vehicles quite recently on the national news but you will not be able to find them in Jane's. The omission of these almost completely new vehicles is therefore quite surprising.
Furthermore, the book does include other derivitive vehicles (many Chinese and eastern European vehicle entries are little more than locally manufactured variants of Soviet/Russian designed vehicles) so the above mentioned omission are rather difficult to justify. Therefore, I've given this edition four stars instead of five. Otherwise, it is a fine reference.
Aside from the omissions discussed above at length, the current edition of Janes Tank Recognition Guide is chock full of information and color photos and is a must-have reference for any "tankspotter" or military gearhead.
Think TANK........2006-07-01
Chris Foss's Book is simply dazzling by the good quality of the photos, drawings and the ton of information he offers. Displaying an enviable knowledge and comprehension of these weapons platforms, , he helps the Neophyte, the Model maker , as well as Armed Forces Researchers and Historians. After reading the passage on each vehicle, especially the finely crafted "key recognition features" Blue inset, we feel we know the vehicle inside out, and can sometimes trace the project back to its inception.Dare look at these toy -looking weapons platforms and understand their pacifying or terrifying power.
For anyone who wants to know how troops and massive firepower can be mobilized and moved very fast, and a decisive factor in the new types of conflicts that may arise in the Twenty First Century.Francois BARDOL
Not "strykingly" complete.......2006-06-18
The Jane's Recognition Guides used to be complete. But this latest version of the Tank guide misses the mark. For one thing, there's no mention of the Russian "Black Eagle," which should be included even if it's only a one-on prototype; with a turret unlike any other USSR or Russian MBT, it might show the direction the Russians are thinking. But a much more glaring ommission: there's no mention at all of the US Army's multi-purpose Stryker 8-wheel combat vehicle, which is seeing a lot of hot action in Iraq and (perhaps) Afghanistan this very minute. There was a 30-minute TV show on it just the other night on Military Channel. Army troops are being quoted praising the Stryker. Again, the politically cancelled Crusader armored heavy self-propelled gun should at least be mentioned, and a a drawing included -- IF Foss and Jane's/Smithsonian want to be complete. Other countries' on-line or upcoming AFVs also are missing. I hope the 5th edition (what -- three-to-five years off?) is more complete.
Amazing tank guide.......2006-06-16
This book is simply amazing! It includes everything! With two exceptions: the japanese LAV 4X4 and Type 96 8x8 APC. Other than that it is complete. I just wish that mr. Watts had made the Warship Guide like this one!

Customer Reviews:
Who is the audience?.......2005-05-20
I'll confess being an early purchaser of most books Christopher Foss admits to authoring. In the fast changing world of military hardware - very few books can compete with the Jane's information series - and working as a computer modeler in combat simulations - these quick references are a must when my client (US Army) wants to see a "what if"...
As a retired Army Intel Officer who provided Order of Battle information from various sources and means for a good many years - I find the book lacking - as said by others - complete classes of weapons systems - errors - and critical data for those of us who want to know as much as can be learned.
For those who cannot have or afford access to more complete or classified data - this book fills a big information hole for the perpetually curious. It's best value is that of a starter book for those who formulate their opinions based on awareness of how lethal the world remains. Many people have an absolute interest - or need to recognize how nations defend themselves - and with what and from whom!
For the military professional - the guide's short-comings on poor editing, weapons potential - maintenance problems, rate of fire - et al... may disappoint my technical intelligence friends - and still leave average readers bored silly with uninteresting detail. One might find this book in competition with military database sites on the Web.
The Web offers many sites with staggering amounts of data. I find many websites hard to use - other than (for) quick look-ups - some sites having poor internal search engines - some are not up to date - others expouse political agendas I'd rather not support - or have as many if not more incorrect data than does this book! (Welcome to the world of intelligence!).
Viewed as an entry level guide to a very complex subject - one can come away from this book with a great appreciation of the staggering size of the international arms industry, the great proliferation of arms, and the technical innovations that drives fierce competition between countries and manufacturers - not only for technical superiority - but for international sales (= survival of arms manufacturers). Jane's has had great commercial success with this series - and for good reason. It delivers broad appeal to a wide audience.
Good marks for:
1. Color photographs in later published versions
2. List of countries who have systems in service
3. Good readability
4. Provides a fairly accurate history of where older weapons "go to die" or get new leases on life with modernization efforts.
5. Attractive packaging for a broad commercial audience.
6. A very affordable price - compared to what else is available.
What were they thinking - when:
1. They left out complete battlefield operating systems - such as track mounted AD weaponry, etc
2. Some embarassing editing errors mentioned in great detail by other reviewers.
3. They mixed paramilitary and police equipment (riot control and police vehicles) with military vehicle categories. Put 'em in their own chapters.
Buy the book and be as critical or satisfied as you want. Jane's markets this to a very wide audience - with a large diversity of wants, needs and desires. Not as cheap as going to the web for data - but a good pocket reference for the military reader.
OK, but lacking.......2004-11-24
Good stuff, but some Combat Vehicles are missing: no Anti Aircraft vehicles, no tracked self-propelled artillery, like the USA MLRS system. Pity.
Excellent Resource, However not as advertised!.......2004-07-23
Just recently picked up the 2002 edition of this book (current edition as above). Great reference book for anyone interested in modern AFV's.
However, there is a major omission, as the book states it contains Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft systems, but they are not included in the book. An obvious error that should be corrected either by including them in a future edition, or removing mention of them being included on the back cover (2000 edition also has this same error).
Only reason for the 3 star rating. Otherwise the book is well worth the price, and has a mountain of detailed info, statistics, color photos & diagrams on most all of the AFV's being used around the world today.
It's got the stuff!.......2003-08-30
If you are looking for up-to-date information on the tanks of the world, then this book is for you. You will even find information on the minor tanks of the world, not just the major countries equipment. Spend the money and get the scoop.
Great book.......2002-04-07
This book is the best book I ever read aboud tanks the book contain some of the newest tanks in the world such as the M1A2,
Leopard 2,Mercava Mk 3, T-90 and more.
The book contain a picture of the tank and its technical data. The book contain 447 pure pages about tanks weapons carriers self propelled guns and much more.

a guide to asiatic parrots.......2002-04-16
I would recommend this book to anyone breeding or interested in asian parakeets. It goes into detail about the most popular breeds and some of the rarer breeds. It also has information on feeding habits which vary among the breeds. Very good reading. Great color pictures of the different mutations within each breed. Not all inclusive but a very good start.
