Book Description
First published in France in 1943 and translated for English-speaking readers in 1961, Le Corbusier Talks with Students presents advice and commentary from the master of modernism for young architects-to-be.
In chapters ranging from "Disorder" to "The Construction of Dwellings" to "A Research Workshop," Le Corbusier discusses his views on architectural history and offers opinions on the future of the profession, while touching on his own projects for the Villa Savoye, the Cit Universitaire, and the Radiant City. Topics such as architecture's role in our directionless society; the balance between spiritual values and technical factors; and the importance of space, proportion, and color are explored by this renowned architect, and still resonate today, almost 50 years later.
Our reprint of this classic text is a facsimile of the 1961 edition, now available as an affordable paperback.

Book Description
In this series of lectures on the painters Hsia Kuei (twelfth-thirteenth centuries), Shen Chou (fifteenth-sixteenth centuries), and Shih-t'ao (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries), Richard Edwards explores the special relationship between the self and landscape in Chinese art. These three painters, each important in his own time and deemed a master by later critics, were all concerned with the subjective in the objective world. In Chinese painting there is no clear desire to separate these two realms; rather, there is a constant, conscious play between the physical reality of the world and the subjective vision of the artist. The artist is continually imitating the world--sometimes more, sometimes less--but he never denies its appearance to the point of total abstraction; nor, in the other extreme, does he claim for the physical world an existence independent of his own involvement.
Richard Edwards is Professor Emeritus of East Asian Art and Art History, University of Michigan.
Book Description
In Deep Design, David Wann explores a new way of thinking about design, one that asks "What is our ultimate goal?" before the first step has even been taken. Designs that begin with such a question -whether in products, buildings, technologies, or communities-are sensitive to living systems, and can potentially accomplish their mission without the seemingly unavoidable side effects of pollution, erosion, congestion, and stress.
Such "deep designs" meet the key criteria of renewability, recyclability, and nontoxicity. Often based on natural systems, they are easy to understand and implement, and provide more elegant approaches to getting the services and functions we need. Wann presents information gleaned from interviews with more than fifty innovative designers in a wide variety of fields, and describes numerous case studies that explain the concept and practice of deep design.
Book Description
“The good old days in which almost everything followed a well-established pattern have long gone. Today, differences of opinion regarding aims and methods lead to serious arguments and bitter disputes on a global rather than a merely regional scale. . . . Those in positions of responsibility must therefore come to realize that the premises and rules enabling people to live together in a truly humane way and to enjoy a stable social order have fundamentally changed!”
—From An Age of New Possibilities
We live in an exciting and rapidly changing time—every day it seems new inventions and innovations that change our way of life arrive on the scene. But even while our day-to-day lives become easier, the larger picture gets more and more complicated. Businesses are also faced with this quandary. The new global economy is presenting even more challenges to companies that must operate in an often unfamiliar worldwide arena. As a result, the business world must undergo a complete overhaul if companies are to adapt to an environment that is far different from the one in which they initially achieved success.
Enter Reinhard Mohn, the innovative entrepreneur who built Bertelsmann into a global powerhouse and one of the largest media companies in the world. Drawing on his more than fifty years of experience in the private sector, Mohn explains how entrepreneurial leaders can take businesses into the future by adapting to new socioeconomic realities and completely changing their way of doing business. Now in paperback, An Age of New Possibilities is an essential read for anyone operating in the business world in the twenty-first century.

Save your money An Age of New Possibilities: How Humane Values and an Entrepreneurial Spirit Will Lead Us into the Future is one of those books where the title says it all. I skimmed the book as it really didn't seem to have anything really new under the sun for me.

This book is a misunderstanding.......2005-08-18
The Immigrant's Guide to the American Workplace is a misunderstanding.
I got the book looking for information about getting a job in the US, writing an American-style resume, about workers' rights, issues of aliens without work authorization, etc. Instead, I got general information mostly off the topic. Pages of the book are filled with chapters about Hygiene, Cash and Credit, Housing, Transportation, Shopping, Dining In/Dining Out, Telephones and Other Technology, Mass Communication. This is fine, had the book was entitles "Making it in America". However, from The Immigrant's Guide to the American Workplace I expect something else.
For example, 16 pages are devoted to shopping and less than one page - to writing a resume. Not even one sample resume or cover letter is given - a serious drawback for a book written for foreigners struggling with English. And how, in the world, will the chapter on dining out help me if I am still unemployed?
What really annoyed me the most was the fact that the table of contents and index do not correspond to actual pages in the book, making finding anything totally impossible. They are off from 2 to 12 pages. Go figure. There is not much to look for anyway. Lacking is even basic information about Social Security program, unemployment rights and benefits, help for job seekers, IRA, COBRA insurance, just name it.
For answers to problems of undocumented workers in the U.S., I went to www.ForNewAmericans.com, which has a useful e-book, and to learn about my rights as an employee I bought NOLO's "Your Rights in the Workplace". I highly recommend them. And, yes, government agencies do have a ton of useful stuff to read although you have to dig hard.

Give some credit to America's backbone.......2005-01-26
This book is full of platitudes and generalities. Not much of a real help to an immigrant. Better information for immigrants come from government agencies.
Telling readers to wash themselves and showing up at work shows a real prejudice and hints of racism.
There is a lot of better information out there.

Not what I expected........2007-09-28
This book really was an analysis of several leader development programs as they existed a decade or so ago. I'm sure it was more helpful then than it is now.
It can be helpful to read a book like this if you are interested in how to assess the value of those types of programs or how to develop them, but it should now be read not for the particulars of those that were covered (they've all changed to a degree, some considerably), but to gain an appreciation for how to approach leader development programs in general.
Leading-Edge Learning re: Leadership Training.......2001-08-14
I was favorably disposed toward Conger's compelling analysis in "Learning to Lead" before I began reading his book. I've been thoroughly impressed by his work thru' several articles he's written (one of which synthesizes the highlights of this book-length exposition in a shorter essay form). "L to L" is essentially a "connoisseurship study," with Conger himself in the primary role of scholarly expert/participant-observer. He writes parts of "L to L" in the first person, as he relates his experiences in several of the most popular leadership training programs available on the market today. But he supplements these more subjective impressions w/ more objective critiques of these programs in light of his more scholarly knowledge re: leadership education, as well. The result is a highly engaging, rewarding reflection that blends the immediacy of a compelling autobiography with the longer view and broader perspective of a savvy social-scientific treatise. Conger has mastered all the salient leadership literature during his long academic career. He thus knows extremely well the subject(s) he writes about here. Yet he complements this professorial persona in "L to L" with his more human, accessible side, too. His readers are thus treated to a very balanced, nuanced appraisal of the major pros & cons of most of the most popular leadership-training approaches one finds being practiced today. Conger uses the direct personal experience of training participants (plenty of others that he and his staff have interviewed, as well as his own) to ground the theory that informs his analysis. He understands the premises that undergird the various approaches he writes about, so he is able to illuminate the limitations as well as the inherent potential of each. I understand that Dr. Conger twice rec'd McGill University's Distinguished Teacher Award. It isn't hard to see from reading this volume why he is such an incisive and gifted educator. Although few of us may still be able to take graduate or undergraduate courses from Conger today, anyone who peruses his "Learning to Lead" will be richly rewarded by his trenchant insights about which combinations of leadership training programs might be most effective--and WHY. I recommend this book MOST ENTHUSIASTICALLY to leadership novices as well as more seasoned educators, trainers, and students in this crucially important and rapidly burgeoning field.

Regarding SAMe and Homocysteine.......2001-08-28
It is a thankless task to respond to reviews such as those of Mr. Levine, but as the author of this book, I have an obligation to set the record straight. First, the condition which afflicted him typically reflects months or years of years of dietary habits -- and, perhaps, genetics -- not a handful of days on a supplement. Second, even a brief review of the medical literature will show that in situations such as his, blood tests usually indicate below normal SAMe levels. Third, a short term trial with SAMe showed that the supplement either has no effect upon homocysteine blood levels or actually lowers these, again, in the near term. There has been no research which looks at the long term impact upon homocysteine blood levels. Fourth, SAMe has been tested with literally tens of thousands of patients over periods ranging up to several years. As far as I can tell, no medical study has ever reported a side effect such as his. Indeed, SAMe is considered to be extraordinarily safe. Finally, had Mr. Levine actually read my books, he would have noticed that I suggest the supplements folic acid, trimethylglycine, and the vitamins B-6 and B-12 as useful for reducing homocysteine levels. As for the 5 stars, I could not post a response without giving a star rating.

Product Description
The 149th Pennsylvania saw its one day of glory on July 1, 1863, when this young and untried regiment staged a magnificent defense at McPherson's farm. Although this bright promise quickly faded into more typical regimental experience, the story of the regiment's service under the indomitable Joshua Chamberlain remains worth telling. Drawing on the service records of more than 800 soldiers as well as diaries, letters, and other primary souces, this book details the 149th's battles from brigade to company level, from the charges at Gettsyburg to the assault at Petersburg. Focus is on the development, mood and character of a regiment as it undergoes changes in leadership, loss of reliable veterans and the increased individual desire for survival as brutal battles take their toll on mind and body. More than 100 photographs enhance the text.
