Book Description
A pioneering exploration of the roots of our attitudes toward nature, Paul Shepard's most seminal work is as challenging and provocative today as when it first appeared in 1967. Man in the Landscape was among the first books of a new genre that has elucidated the ideas, beliefs, and images that lie behind our modern destruction and conservation of the natural world. Departing from the traditional study of land use as a history of technology, this book explores the emergence of modern attitudes in literature, art, and architecture--their evolutionary past and their taproot in European and Mediterranean cultures. With humor and wit, Shepard considers the influence of Christianity on ideas of nature, the absence of an ethic of nature in modern philosophy, and the obsessive themes of dominance and control as elements of the modern mind. In his discussions of the exploration of the American West, the establishment of the first national parks, and the reactions of pioneers to their totally new habitat, he identifies the transport of traditional imagery into new places as a sort of cultural baggage.

INTELLECTUALLY LUCID.......2000-05-12
This tour de force historical perspective of nature leads the reader into a provocative search for understanding the human role on Earth. Not for the narrow-minded and/or Jerry Falwell.

Lost Art.......2001-12-30
I first looked at this book because I had some old paintings
that I found in antique shop. They were signed by women, but I
couldn't find anything about who they were. In this book, I
found not only the names, but personal information about the artists, what had been written about them during their lifetimes,
and some scholarly, but very clear and interesting commentary
about women who painted in Victorian times and what their lives
and careers were like. It turned out that one of my paintings
is fairly valuable (I went to an art dealer knowing what I had!) but after I found out about the artist I liked the painting even more and wouldn't part with it. So the book was cheap at the price, and now is an important part of my antique-hunting library.

Book Description
Preoccupied with the war on terrorism, we have lost sight of a more dangerous enemy of social peace and progress - the inability of the world's people to access the ecological goods and services they need to maintain and build their societies. By 2025, the combined demands of continued economic growth and the reduction of global poverty will require, annually, the ecological equivalent of three or four Earths. If history is our guide, the options for meeting these enormous 'provisioning' needs are extremely limited. Like the tribes, cities, and nations of earlier times, we can fight our neighbours for privileged access to declining ecosystem goods and services. This confrontation will inevitably pit the wealthy beneficiaries of the global economy against the billions of excluded, and lead to accelerated ecological collapse, the derailment of growth, and social chaos. The only alternative to this dismal prospect is to mobilize on a scale as if for war in order to meet this provisioning challenge on the battlefields of directed technological innovation.
In The Next World War, Roy Woodbridge argues that the international community must redirect present sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts in ways that place the provisioning of societies at the heart of political decision-making. To move this highly focused agenda forward, he calls on the United Nations to convene a World Forum on Global Provisioning to declare war on ecological decline and set the battle plans for the next world war - the war to equitably provision continued growth.

NC_Dude.......2005-04-20
One of the most thought provoking books I read in the last few years. Full of breathtaking information and analysis, this book serves as a great knowledge base for the environmentally conscious person. I hope that more people will read it or at least be exposed to the ideas it is trying to promote. I certainly enjoyed it, thought I am much more worried about my future and the future of my children than I ever was.
Get prepared!.......2004-10-05
Wake up, North America! This book is available for several months already, and no one cares to comment? It seems we, people, are like that proverbial frog which does not bother to jump out until it is too late, and dies in the gradually heated water. The terrorist attacks make us worrying, but the dwindling supplies of drinkable water and breathable air, the dire conclusions of the ecological footprint studies do not. I have not read the book yet. However, based on the author's credentials, I would guess that for any one who is not yet fully aware of the gravity of environmental eventualities it is a must-read one. Maybe, the publisher needs to do a better job.

Book Description
Although many books focus on law and economics, and environmental economics, this is one of the first to combine the two topics in a fully integrated and comprehensive manner. The authors successfully bridge the gap between the disciplines of environmental law and traditional economics in a lucid and highly accessible style.
The Economic Analysis of Environmental Policy and Law, now available in paperback, covers many of the recent advances in the field and attempts to integrate some of the most crucial legal and economic instruments which, in the authors' view, have not yet been subjected to proper analysis. These include zoning, expropriation, licensing, third party liability, safety regulation, mandatory insurance and criminal sanctions. The authors pay particular attention to the interrelationships of these instruments and their various economic effects. Using a comparative law and economics methodology, they are also able to incorporate environmental law with international policy and investigate the many diverse rules of the legal system and their implementation in different countries. Crucially, the authors do not consider economics as the exclusive determinant in legal rule-making. They also highlight the need for ethical considerations and illustrate the potential limitations of pure economic analysis.
The book assumes no prior knowledge of economics and will prove informative and rewarding for students of law and the social and natural sciences, especially those with an interest in environmental policy. With an extensive reference list and detailed notes on further reading material, this book will also serve as a stimulating introduction to the discipline of law and economics for environmental, political and legal practitioners.

Book Description
The plight of women in post-reform Russia has its roots in the combination of the new market system and the old legacy of discrimination. The Soviet Union was the first country to give women equal rights and equal pay, but this was not carried through in practice. This is the first study to apply modern econometrics to survey-data collected in the USSR. Analysis of data from Russia shows how legislative equality hid actual discrimination. Katz also challenges the conventional wisdom that, for ideological reasons, Soviet manual workers were favored over the highly educated. Gender, Work and Wages in the Soviet Union includes a critical survey of economic theories of gender and wages and the Soviet wage system. The final chapter brings the debate up to date by examining how old and new mechanisms of gender inequality interact in post-Soviet Russia.

Book Description
The Closing Door is the first major critique of the effect of conservative policies on urban race and poverty in the 1980s. Atlanta, with its booming economy, strong elected black leadership, and many highly educated blacks, seemed to be the perfect site for those policies and market solutions to prove themselves. Unfortunately, not only did expected economic opportunity fail to materialize but many of the hard-won gains of the civil rights movement were lost. Orfield and Ashkinaze painstakingly analyze the evidence from Atlanta to show why black opportunity deteriorated over the 1980s and outline possible remedies for the damage inflicted by the Reagan and Bush administrations.
"The Closing Door is a crucial breath of fresh air . . . an important and timely text which will help to alter the 'underclass' debate in favor of reconsidering race-specific policies. Orfield and Ashkinaze construct a convincing argument with which those who favor 'race-neutrality' will have to contend. In readable prose they make a compelling case that economic growth is not enough."—Preston H. Smith II, Transition

Book Description
A radical new interpretation of British command and generalship in the First World War which debunks the 'donkey' myth - leading historians examine the practicalities of command on the Western Front and British command emerges as much more effective than many believe which helps to explain why the British Army reached a peak of military excellence in 1918. It contains new looks at familiar subjects, for example Haig and GHQ and Gough as Army Commander and has chapters on topics almost entirely neglected in the past including the role of Corps and Artillery Commanders. It is the first book to examine the 'nuts and bolts' of British command on the Western Front.

Surprising Analysis of British Leadership in WWI.......2005-03-23
The British Army and especially its officer corp during World War I has been characterized in book and film as being obstinate and even stupid, unwilling to learn and incapable of understanding the new dynamics of the battlefield.
To cope with the static trench warfare, the British had developed tanks, while the Germans had developed their 'stormtrooper' tactics.
While it is certainly true that the dynamics of the battlefield had changed, in truth so had the British generals. By early 1917 the BEF had developed a new tactical system based on fire and movement much like that of the stormtroopers, and which was to continue to be the basis for infantry assaults until today.
This book brings together a series of articles by a range of writers to analyze what the British did during the war. It shines a whole new light on British leadership.

Most of What you should know about Botswana.......2004-06-25
If this book is the same one edited by W. A Edge and M. H. Lekorwe, it is a very detailed book by college professors in Botswana and I found it very helpful on my research on one of best run democracies in the world, unknown to many. Its worth every dollar it costs you and I highly recommend it. Its like 'everything you ever wanted to know about Botswana and were afraid to ask under the same roof' kind of book.
