Some good tips, portraits are mostly tacky.......2003-06-25

This book has a few decent tips for doing portraits with infrared film, such as avoiding certain colors and applications of fabric and women's makeup that will absorb or reflect too much infrared light. And examples of how IR can cover skin blemishes or give a romanticized feel to a photo are explained and depicted well. There are also a handful of nice pastoral shots here.

Beyond that, the information is vague and the portraiture is largely tacky. Many of the models are shown in unnatural poses. In some cases, their modern wardrobes and hairstyles are completely inappropriate for the dreamy/old-time/otherworldly locales in which the photographer has placed them. Subjects/clothing that have a more timeless quality---baby photos, wedding portraits, boudour (sp?) photos, theatre costuming, 4H photos, etc.---can work great in IR. Most of the graduation portraits here do NOT, and are almost painfully pretentious.

Although not about portraiture, "Infrared Landscape Photography", also by this publisher, gives much better technical and aesthetic information on the uses and special considerations of IR films.

Excellent Study of Infrared Portraiture.......2000-02-09

Richard's book sheds new light on Infrared portrait photography. I am glad to read a book on Infrared photography that can be utilized by working professional photographers to help increase their revenue. Many of the other Infrared books I have read , although technically very good in their content, left me with very few ideas to make Infrared photography profitable. This book goes beyond being a "pretty picture" guide for photo enthusiasts and offers the reader an exciting way to add a profit center to their photography business.

Previous books on growth management in the United States favor balanced growth, which suggests that growth and environmental protection represent equally legitimate objectives. Taking issue with the balanced growth position, this book argues that further growth is unsustainable and that growth management must focus on ensuring ecological sustainability. The book opens with the arguments supporting current global limits to growth, and then shows that the growth management movement in the United States represents an institutionalized form of ongoing growth accommodation, which is incongruous with sustainable behavior. The book also documents the historical pro-growth tendency of the planning profession and contends that this bias is impeding the necessary transition to a sustainable future. In addition, it presents the standards courts use to decide the legality of growth management programs and suggests that those standards do not present insurmountable obstacles to stopping future growth. In conclusion, this book presents operational measures of ecological sustainability and argues that the growth imperative currently driving the growth management movement must be replaced by the imperative of ecological sustainability.

Great that there are folks willing to tell it like it is!.......1999-02-16

The entire membership of the American Planning Association, every "professional" practicing planner, and every elected official from the local on down to the federal level should read this book. Current growth management efforts that are popping up all over the U.S. serve only as other examples of how our society continues to ignore the real roots of our problems. Growth management does not address carrying capacity or sustainability, instead it is another clever "band-aid" solution to societal ills. Until folks wake up, take action, clean-up corporate America and its destruction of all living organisms (yes, that includes humans!), and their own comsumptive and reproductive practices the picture for the future will only continue to look worse. Essentially, Zovanyi's book is a call for action and a challenge to anyone engaged in the planning profession to dare try anything different than its constant perpetuation of the "there's infinite growth" status quo camp of bureaucrats and special interest money from irresponsible corporations and their greedy businessmen.

A good review of planning, law and sustainability........1998-10-09

The author has a great command of the planning profession as well as case law and its influence on growth patterns in the United States. As someone involved in land use and planning, but not a professional planner I found the book well written and easy to understand. I appreciate the authors argument and concern, however, I was left very disappointed with his concluding chapter as being too radical to every be taken seriously enough to be implemented. Maybe that's the point! We may not open our eyes to his thesis in time to sustain a sustainable future.

A very strong critique/interesting recommendations........2002-04-21

This is a manifesto for a new sustainable economy. Like most of the Open Media Pamphlets, this work is cheap, short and to the point; as well as being very insightful and pertinent. Her critique of the global economy and social structure here at home are right on track. She gives a framework for some proposals for how to change our system. I do not find all of her every one of her proposals to be desirable, but do appreciate the spirit and breadth of her arguments. This is a much needed contribution to the burgeoning dialogue in progressive literature. The entire Open Media Pamphlet series is indispensible. You won't find a non-well argued book among them.

Primer on Key Issues for Next and Future Elections.......2002-03-28

I am just blown away by the quality and utility of the Open Media Pamphlet Series, which brings very high-value thinking to the people in a very low-cost and easy to understand format.

Juliet Schor, author of two books on related topics, and a lecturer at Harvard since 1984, does a lovely job, in 64 pages, of hitting on the key issues that voters must address as they move forward in taking back the power from political parties now held hostage by corporations.

The quality of ecosystems is affected by the actions of different stakeholders who use them in a variety of ways. In order to understand this complex relationship between humans and nature, it is vital to understand the complexity of the interacting agents. SAS selection process described.......2007-10-16

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in gaining insight into the selection process for gaining entry into Britains TA SAS units, which are roughly the equivalent of joining a Green Beret National Guard unit here in the States. Over the course of 1.5 years Balinger, every weekend is put through a tough selection regimen who's cornerstone is carrying a heavy rucksack over the rugged Welsh countryside. At the end of this period few survive to wear the coveted sand colored beret and entry into the elite SAS.

The Quiet Soldier.......2005-08-16

Adam Ballinger liked to travel and backpack through the mountains. On one trip, he encountered a man who gave him a phone number and told him he could make it through. Thus began the odyssey of Adam Ballinger in joining the 21 SAS of Britains' Territorial Army, roughly equivalent to the Reserves in the US.

To get into the unit, Ballinger faced a Selection just as rigorous as that of the 22 (active duty) SAS, but was required to maintain his own fitness when not meeting every weekend. Ballinger is required to go through this and at the same time worry about his girlfriend/fiancé and his job. He finds that the number of those who make it exceedingly few, and those that do have problems in their civilian lives from spending so much of their time maintaining their conditioning and meeting every weekend for 48+ hours, often required to spend a week undergoing training at a time then slip back into their lives without telling anyone what they are doing.

Ballinger is an educated man who arrives with a job, a girlfriend, and not knowing what he is getting himself into, and finishes a man with a tenuous hold on his job, a fiancé he doesn't get to see much of and still not understanding what has driven him to keep going, while others either quit or were sent packing. Some of his fellows have military backgrounds, some, including himself, do not. Ultimately, all who partake in the experience are changed by it and that is where Ballinger shines. He describes the changes in himself and those around him through the grueling process of selection, which he describes in detail.
