Book Description

"This is one of the best accounts of a place's history and meaning I have ever read. Low's book should be widely read and used in courses in architecture, urban design, planning, landscape architecture, and historic preservation, as well as Latin American studies and anthropology. What a wonderful book!"

—Dolores Hayden, Professor of Architecture, Urbanism, and American Studies, Yale University

Friendly gossip, political rallies, outdoor concerts, drugs, shoeshines, and sex-for-sale—almost every aspect of Latin American life has its place and time in the public plaza. In this wide-ranging, multi-disciplinary study, Setha M. Low explores the interplay of space and culture in the plaza, showing how culture acts to shape public spaces and how the physical form of the plaza encodes the social and economic relations within its city.

Low centers her study on two plazas in San José, Costa Rica, with comparisons to public plazas in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. She interweaves ethnography, history, literature, and personal narrative to capture the ambiance and meaning of the plaza. She also uncovers the contradictory ethnohistories of the European and indigenous origins of the Latin American plaza and explains why the plaza is often a politically contested space.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting look at life on the Costa Rican plaza.......2003-03-30

Professor Setha M. Low's book On The Plaza-The Politics of Public Space and Culture discusses the interrelationship of public space and culture. She primarily focuses on two plazas in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Parque Central and the Plaza de la Cultura, while also making references to other places such as Tenochtitlan in Mexico. Using ethnographic, ethnohistorical, microgeographical, and statistic sampling methods, Low argues that "these culturally and politically charged public spaces are essential to everyday civic life and the maintenance of a participatory democracy."

Low describes the background of Costa Rica, going into its population, ethnic, religious, and urban proportion distribution. She explains the rise and fall of consecutive monocultural economies, such as cacao, tobacco, bananas, and coffee, its tradition of democracy, and the economic nadir in the 1980's. She then goes into the history of San Jose from colonial times to the present, including the devastating effects of the economic downtown and the trade vacuum created by NAFTA.

She then explores the history of the two plazas. Parque Central dates back to 1761, and is the larger and more densely populated of the two. It became a center for merchants, grocers, lottery ticket sellers, and sundry vendors, as well as shoppers and customers. Also, the trend of regulars sitting in the same benches over time gives Parque Central an ambience of traditional social life and hence less contested space between various social groups.

The Plaza de la Cultura, constructed between 1976 and 1982, was built as a contrast to the closed nature of Parque Central, as a more open space for the middle and lower classes. Central to the plaza was the National Theatre with a museum housing the country's Precolumbian gold. Despite its cultural stance, the new plaza became a haven for underage prostitutes, gangs, and drug users.

Plazas also contain social and spatial boundaries as factors that symbolize differences such as nationalities, race, class, and gender between plaza populations within a capitalist system. Low again contrasted the two plazas in San Jose in the framework of social boundaries:

Parque Central: mostly older men, closed space, clique-oriented, has professional prostitutes, lottery ticket, newspaper, food vendors, less foreigners, older.

Plaza de la Cultura: mostly women and children, open space, not clique-oriented, prostitutes who give services for clothes, nurturing relationships, balloon, popcorn, tourist item vendors, more foreigners, younger.

Another more important function of the plaza is for public protest. Low categorizes them in terms of the kinds of protest and their outcomes. Manifest protests such as strikes and demonstrations usually result in the temporary closure of the public space, followed by a reopening where the space is policed to discourage undesirables. An example of that involved the chasing out of shoeshine men from Parque Central. Latent protests involve conflicts that become apparent in terms of design and surrounding buildings and can result in discussions in various media or a plebiscite. Ritual protests, such as parades, normally involve the temporary takeover of space by a protesting group before it is relinquished to the forces nominally in charge of that space.

Taken in the context of protest, Low sees public space as symbolizing political objectives by those, particularly national leaders, who created them--e.g. the Plaza de la Democracia is a legacy to Oscar Arias Sanchez's Nobel Peace Prize-winning efforts for Central American peace. Plazas that don't fulfill the objectives of their creators or are not deemed valuable are either redesigned or denied access to the public.

Constituting twenty-five years of research spanning from 1972 to 1997, Setha Low's exhaustively researched book depicts the essence of the function of the plaza.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, an unbiased observer.......2002-02-14

I read this book mainly because as a Tico (Costa Rican) I was very surprised somebody would write a whole book about a couple of places that for me are part of my everyday life. Besides having been to the Plazas of Europe and seen on TV the huge plazas that some other Latin American countries (Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, etc) have I was curious to find out the reason behind her choosing of the Parque Central and the Plaza de la Cultura for this work.
I really liked what I read, she has the benefit of having seen these two public spaces in the city of San Jose, Costa Rica evolve over the last 30 years, from the days we used to consider the Plaza de la Cultura not a nice place to go to, the days when we were outraged by foreign musicians and artist taking over a ground that was supposed to be for the display of our culture till nowadays that the Plaza has turned the city into a sort of fish-tank from where the tourists and US retirees can leisurely watch Costa Ricans as we go about our daily lives.
I truly recommend this book.

        Book Description

Street photography has a long and varied history, encompassing such artists as Walker Evans from the 1930s, Robert Frank from the 1950s, and Garry Winogrand from the 1970s, each of whom, along with other practitioners, siezed the medium as their own and extended it, creating something new. Open City brings together the work of 19 artists to examine the history of street photography over the course of the last half-century. It takes as its starting point photographers such as Lee Friedlander and William Klein, who were instrumental in the development of a radical new approach to documentary photography, aided by the increasing portablility of camera equipment. For these and subsequent artists, the street has continued to hold an inherent fascination as a theater of human activity. Open City reflects the diversity of the work stimulated by this revolution: from Terry Donovan's advertising and fashion photography, to Susan Meiselas's photographs of war-torn Nicaragua and Raghubir Singh's vibrant and colorful images of his native India. Color, now considered a key tool for photographers, has only in recent years been legitimized, in part thanks to the work of American photographer William Eggleston during the late 1970s. Open City also includes the work of a newer generation of photographers, including the Turner Prize-winning Wolfgang Tillmans, and examines the the way in which contemporary practice continues to react to and build upon the tradition of street photography.

4 out of 5 stars A refreshing break from the norm.......2006-07-06

Finally, an exhibition about street photography OUTSIDE of New York City. Although there was certainly a bias for American photographers, one can argue that, as far as the Western world is concerned, America essentially invented the "street" aesthetic (thanks, particulary to Robert Frank) as a decisive rejection of documentary photography (a la the FSA years) and photojournalism. Regardless, it was really refreshing to see street photography from India, Asia, and Africa, and the color works by Raghubir Singh were my favorite, hands down. The only aspect of the show that the catalog cannot convey is the scale of the works. There is just this wonderful interaction that occurs when one can peer closely at the grain of an 8x10 print or marvel before a photo-light box that stretches beyond human scale.

This catalog is a treasure to me and I often return to Ferguson's essay as a touchstone for my own research. It has also introduced me to new photographers and inspired me to look beyond a single, isolated photographer in order to grasp an entire genre and its multitude of diverse practitioners.

3 out of 5 stars Exhibit Catalogue is a Mixed Bag.......2005-04-17

Published as a catalogue to an exhibit that debuted at the Oxford Museum of Modern Art, this coffee-table book gathers the work of 19 photographers under the somewhat hazy concept of "street photography." If you are familiar with Roberto Rossellini's groundbreaking 1945 film, which lends its name to the book and exhibit, cocurators Russell Ferguson and Kerry Brougher were attempting to bring together work that explores the notion of the camera liberated from the carefully controlled confines of the studio. And as Ferguson puts it in his accompanying essay, "The city offers itself as ready-made compositions constantly formed new patterns, an endlessly regenerating trove of pictoral opportunity." Both his essay and Brougher's rather ably and briefly explain the history of technology in photography that led to the photographer's literal freedom, as well as the shifts in the art world that led to the photographer's artistic freedom to wander the streets looking for material. In both cases, there is a lot of overlap with motion pictures, especially the neorealist movement, cinema verite, and the French new wave. The two essays also provide brief overviews of the photographers included and their respective careers (an appendix also offers additional biographical detail on each).

However, the whole notion of "street photography" remains rather ill-defined and broad. The book includes cityscapes cluttered with people and cityscapes devoid of people, aerial shots, ground level shots, unstaged shots of real people, staged shots of models, combat photojournalism from Nicaragua, and conceptual work by Nikki Lee that has pretty much nothing to do with cities whatsoever. Indeed, the only organizing principle seems to be that the photos are outdoors and not obviously rural -- although in the case of Raghubir Singh's Indian photos, even the latter is violated. Which is not to say there's not some beautiful work here. The best is from some of modern photography's big names, such as Robert Frank's William Klein's gritty candid shots from the '50s, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand's beautifully composed work from the '60s, and bunch of vivid Eggleston shots from 1985. Legends of Japanese photography are present as well, with several pieces from Nobuyoshi Araki's 1963 series "Satchin and Mabo" and 1988 series "Tokyo Story", and Daido Moriyama's menacing late '60s work. There are some very good photos from Britain, including two from Thomas Struth, some very campy magaziney Terrence Donovan stuff, and two very nice early '50s shots from Nigel Henderson.

The remainder of the work was rather less impressive and/or out of place. Adam Secula's series of workers walking up stairs in the '70s left me unmoved. Philip-Lorca Dicorcia's early '90s series of pedestrians in various cities were pretty unremarkable save a nice one of a shambling rough character in Los Angeles. Jeff Wall's recreated scenes look as fake as they are -- and seem kind of pointless on top of it all. Tomas Struth's two shots from China come off like good amateur work -- the kind of photos where the subject matter does all the work. Catherine Opie's wide format empty streetscapes didn't do much for me. Nikki Lee's conceptual series is interesting but out of place. Wolfgang Tillmans seems split between fashion photography and more interesting abstract stuff, the selections here vary. Raghubir Singh's work is uneven and out of place. Susan Meiselas's coverage of street combat in late '70s Nicaragua is immediate but also out of place. Finally, Beat Streuli's series of New York pedestrians is utterly banal.

All in all, the essays are better than average and it's a decent taster's menu of photographers that might turn you on to someone new. However, the overall concept and selection don't really hold together very well. Few are likely to truly love the entire book.

              Book Description

Changing Course is a practical introduction to new and necessary methods of running businesses so that the realities of business and the marketplace support the realities of the environment and the needs of human development.

Gathering the expertise of more than 50 leaders of multinational corporations and backed by an array of case studies showing existing best practices, Changing Course provides an extensive analysis of how the business community can adapt and contribute to the crucial goal of sustainable development - which combines the objectives of environmental protection and economic growth. All of its recommendations are linked by the belief that only by allowing market forces to operate freely and integrating the "polluter pays" principle into environmental and economic policy can sustainable development be achieved.

Changing Course focuses first on the often adversarial relationship between business and government in chapters that discuss full-cost pricing and market signals, energy, capital markets, trade, and managing change. It shows how environmental costs, which are often invisible, can best be factored into production, investment, and trade. And it calls for a rational long-term energy strategy that balances the energy needs for economic development with a policy shift toward the payment of pollution costs and energy efficiency - changes that demand new thinking and increased flexibility by policy makers in both the public and the private sectors.

Changing Course then explores business to business relationships, beginning with the sensitive topic of corporate reporting in environmental areas and discussion of how an environmentally conscious firm is managed. Chapters look at optimal products and processes, product stewardship in retail and trading companies, at new practices for such renewable resource industries as forestry and agriculture, and at the need for new long-term partnerships to boost economic development and environmental standards in the developing world.

Changing Course concludes with a detailed look at the implications of sustainable development for business in the developing world, where, as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi pointed out, poverty itself is a great polluter.

Stephan Schmidheiny is a Swiss industrialist, Chairman of the Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Principal Advisor for Business and Industry to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (ECO'92).

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work.......2000-03-14

Doing Business with Kuwait is almost an encyclopedia about Kuwait. I wonder if Mr. Kennedy has missed anything about Kuwait. It is a remarkable work as the book talks about the history, politics, economy, and society of Kuwait. It also provides detailed information about religion, weather, demography, and many more topics.

The book contains magnificent data represented in many charts. In addition, the "Visitor Tips" sections are most useful and helpful for foreign visitors to Kuwait, whether the purpose of the visit is business, leisure, or work.

Therefore, if that part of the world, particularly Kuwait, is of an interest to you, this book is of a great great value.

5 out of 5 stars THE HOW-TO BIBLE ON BUSINESSIN KUWAIT.......1999-06-27

Doing Business with Kuwait is a wide-ranging comprehensive look at how businesspersons from the West and East need to modifify their approach to business in order to be successful in the Kuwaiti environment. A brief skim through this book shows that business rules and practices in Kuwait are in fact very different than they are in the USA and the rest of the world. Indeed, as a successful businessperson operating in Kuwait, I can agree wholeheartedly with the general thrust of Mr Kennedy's book, which accords with my own business experience in Kuwait. I only wish that I had it to hand when I was starting business in Kuwait myself several years ago. Doing Business with Kuwait is logically divided into seven neat sections. These cover the country, the economy, business laws, taxation, finance&industry, the market place, and behavioural aspects. Whether it is background infomation on country, a detailed look at rules and regulations, or tips and hints on how to be successful in the Kuwait market place, it is all to be found in Doing Business with Kuwait. The book puts into words things about Kuwait that I had learned intuitively over the years. One of the striking things about Doing Business with Kuwait is how its wealth of information is presented. The individual chapters are written in a simple flowing style that is a joy to read and in which the exposition opens out gradully and very understandably. But best of all, the text is intrespersed here and there with boxes cintaining advice on how to do certain things and warnings of potential pitfalls. A really great way to present the essentials. In conclusion, I can only heartily recopmmend Doing Business with Kuwait to anyone, whether an executive of an international corporation or a small time entrepreneur like myself, cosidering taking a chance in the Kuwaiti market which, belive me, is not for the faint-hearted. I only hope that this book will be recognised for what it is, the bible on doing business in Kuwait.

                          Book Description

This book is the first comprehensive and detailed study of early modern midwives in seventeenth-century London. Midwives, as a group, have been dismissed by historians as being inadequately educated and trained for the task of child delivery. The Midwives of Seventeenth-Century London rejects these claims by exploring the midwives' training and their licensing in an unofficial apprenticeship by the Church. Dr. Evenden also offers an accurate depiction of the midwives in their socioeconomic context by examining a wide range of seventeenth-century sources. This expansive study not only recovers the names of almost one thousand women who worked as midwives in the twelve London parishes, but also brings to light details about their spouses, their families and their associates.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for intelligence .......2007-06-08

There are not many books which deal with practical aspect of intelligence & EW systems. Recently I found this book as a very good text book. I would like to recommend this book for the readers who want to get wide insights on the area.
