    Book Description

Codes, as systematic forms of regulation and organization, are not the innocuous or neutral documents they are often considered to be. Operating with or without legal sanction, they are formulated to ensure specific and predictable outcomes and are laden with authorial and authoritative intent. Nevertheless, while codes have come to be an increasingly pervasive force in contemporary architecture, they are still frequently dismissed as onerous and quotidian. This volume of Perspecta -- the oldest and most distinguished student-edited, university-based American architecture journal -- investigates the historical and ongoing evolution of the relationship between codes and architecture, from Vitruvian systems of mathematical proportion through current strategies in building legislation.

Although regulations created to establish restrictive power over building have existed throughout history, architecture today is more than ever bounded, shaped, and directed by codes. Codes simultaneously manage the complexity of architectural practice and establish the terms of its interaction with a widening range of internal and external forces. While codes impose the particular interests of their authors on both the architectural profession and the inhabitants of the built environment, they are seldom the focus of critical inquiry. Approaching the topic from a variety of backgrounds and positions, the authors contributing to Perspecta 35 examine the impact of codes on architecture in contexts ranging from contemporary technology to the foundational traditions of the discipline. Collectively they reveal the breadth and impact of codes affecting architecture and speculate on how the relationships between the two will continue to unfold.

        Book Description

        5 out of 5 stars A Concentrated Introduction.......2005-05-31

There are a number of books that discuss taking a digital photographis image and using Photoshop to create wild abstract photographuic art. This book is different. It discusses using computer-based image processing in order to improve a hpotograph without substantially altering its content.

The book uses Photoshop version 8, also called Photoshop CS as the processing package. It also presents techniques that can be used with other software packages.

The book is splendidly illustrated with hundreds of four color photographs showing exactly what is being done to modify the images. It shows the commands and procedures that are used to create just what effects. All in all, it probably uses only some 20% of the commands available in Photoshop. It is not a general introduction to Photoshop, but is concentrated in the area of pixel processing. In that area it completely covers the subject in great detail.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good book in digital age........2004-01-27

This is an extremely good book in digital age. It provides really nice and usefull techniques in handling professional level changes to your digital image.

This book is not just good for digital camera owners but also for usesrs of 3d software and the images that they create. I use the information provided with book to provide better post processing with Pandromeda's Mojoworld.

My only complaint if any - is that all the examples are in Mac format but that is understand in artistic community.

        3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2004-01-26

There are many good features of this book, but it could have been better.

On the inside flap, it says the book "... is for every kind of photographer ... written so you can understand the techniques whatever your skill level ... leads you step-by-step all the way ..."

Virtually all the usual procedures are covered. There are photos on almost every page, mostly in full-colour. This is good, but sometimes there may be too many, and it is not always clear which one the writer is referring to. In some cases, I would have preferred the original version to the "improvement". I found numerous explanations less clear than they could be. And there are some actual mistakes. In "Working with Masks", for example, which applies a more interesting sky to a landscape with a lake in the foreground, the (invisible) horizon is incorrectly located, so that the reflection of the sky in the lake is too low down. These are quibbles, certainly but they detract from what is nearly an excellent book, well conceived but not so well implemented.

To summarize: a nice book, but not one to depend on for learning how to use Photoshop.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book.......2003-10-06

This book is just what I was looking for as a photographer. It explains how to use Photoshop as digital darkroom with clear and concise examples. An excellent companion to Photoshop in a Classroom.

Another one of Paladin's titles which damage its credibility as a publisher. Most of the techniques in this book are far more trouble than they are worth, and the rest require commiting crimes and ripping people off. Anyone with a little ingenuity can figure out how to do most of the techniques described within, oftentimes better than the author.
Is it really worth it to go to a gas station at night, driving from pump to pump collecting the gas stored in the hoses (especially when one considers gas was less than a dollar a gallon at time of publication)? How about walking through the mall every morning and spraying yourself with samples of cologne so you don't have to buy any? Or writing a fake letter stating you are interested in advertising so you can get a free magazine (which probably won't work, anyway)?
The paper this book was printed on could have gone to something far more worthy, like a microwave cookbook or a parking ticket. If you have obsessive-compulsive leanings towards the saving of money, this book is for you. Otherwise, avoid.

3 out of 5 stars Jobs for everyone?.......2006-08-08

Senator Paul Simon of Illinois wrote this book in 1987. He died in 2003.

The basic premise of the book is that Simon's proposed Guaranteed Job Opportunity Program will help reduce unemployment and stem poverty, by gainfully employing, in public works type projects, those without jobs who could and would work.

Simon compares and contrasts his proposal with the Works Progress Administration, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), and the Jobs Training Partnership Act (JTPA).

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the one we have now, came about after Simon's book was written, so of course it was not included in his book. WIA took effect in 2000, and is still the current "law of the land" as of 2006.

What you may learn from Simon's book is some of the history of public job creation programs, since the Depression years. Simon had some very good ideas, and many of them have already been incorporated into WIA and similar state programs.

The tenor of all these latter-day job and training programs is that of compromise and hybridism, between the political left and the political right.

Roosevelt's WPA started the ball rolling, and when unemployment rose alarmingly again a few decades later, CETA was enacted. But the political right did not like CETA: It was too much government intervention and not enough obedience to free market forces.

Thus, we pass through JTPA (a hybrid type program with something for private and public sectors) to WIA. WIA doesn't provide jobs, except to the employees of the WIA Work Source Centers (these Centers have different names in each participating state).

The employees of the Centers may install banks of computers, hold job preparation classes, and provide job leads, so that unemployed people can, "on their own," find jobs, hopefully in the private sector without subsidy. However, there are still many subsidies.

Social Security's Ticket to Work program is another example of how Simon's ideas have morphed into the 21st century. Social Security recipients are encouraged to work and are given some leeway in how much they make, until they reach a certain criterion level.

These are examples of the compromises that both Republicans and Democrats finally bought and got through both Houses to become laws.

So far some of it seems to be working. I work at one of the WIA sites in California. This organization previously provided JTPA training. The organization also sponsors a Ticket to Work program.

It seems to be an ongoing cycle. What comes next?

One important factor that has changed since Simon wrote this book: Immigration from outside the U.S. Immigrants have taken many of the jobs that Simon was proposing to create.

When Simon wrote, African American poverty was widely cited and rued. Today, at least in places where immigrants have made homes, there is an entirely different battle going on, centering around the question: Are illegal immigrants taking jobs from legal Americans or are they doing jobs no American would "stoop" to do?

Simon's book has several vignettes of struggling, unemployed people, mostly from the early 1980s.

So, the book is outdated, but still useful for some purposes.

          Diximus.

With the ink dry on her divorce papers, Natalie Goodwin feels life is running just the way she wants it. Her new flower shop is set for its grand opening, and her daughter is enjoying her first semester in college. The house is clean, the bills are paid, and cooking dinner every night is now an option. And my review:

This was my first try of this author, and I found that I really liked her writing style. It was flowing and easy to follow, and really drew the reader into the story. Her writing seems so effortless...that's when you know someone is really good at their craft, when they make it look so easy, even though you know it's not.

I was a little worried when the hero starts out as married at the beginning of the book, but not to worry. This isn't a "cheating lovers" novel. In fact, his wife is quickly out of the picture, and rightly villified, for having an affair.

One thing I really liked about this book was how the author built the friendship between the hero and heroine. There wasn't that instant overwhelming lust you find so often in romance. There were sparks, all right, but there was more pulling these two together than just the physical chemistry. That's a rare treat in romance. The author did a really good job of developing the characters. I felt like I really knew who they were, and that these were people I'd like and be proud to call friends.

I also liked that this wasn't a "series of stupid misunderstandings" novel. The relationship issues were real and down-to-earth. And these two actually communicated like adults (again, a rare find in romance writing).

So why only three stars? I felt like the story was progressing so well, when suddenly the characters decide that since there can be no real future, as he wants children, and she's already in premenopause and unable to have any more (and at a stage in her life when she doesn't really want to raise another family), that they will just be friends with "benefits". In other words, they won't be a real romantic couple, they'll just be good friends who have sex.

Ugh. I felt so cheated by this, especially considering how mature the characters had been up until that point. I find the whole concept of "no-strings-attached" sex repulsive. I was raised to believe that sex is for marriage. And while I recognize that not everybody feels the same way, I do think that a commitment and a belief that there will be a future for the relationship is necessary before a couple hops into bed together. Sex isn't something you can do with a friend, as if it were just a fun activity, like going dancing or playing racquetball. It's an intimate giving of oneself--that's why it's called LOVEmaking, not "pleasuremaking", "funmaking" or "no-big-dealmaking".

I was really disappointed by this, as I felt this author could do so much better, and that this plot turn really didn't do her characters (or her writing talent) justice. I would definitely be interested in trying her work again, as I can see how much talent she has. I just wish she hadn't wasted it here.

            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful love story........2006-06-24

I came across this book at work. I just finished reading another book, and was desperate to start a new one. I read the back cover thinking it was not my kind of book, and started it reluctantly. From the first chapter, the book caught my attention. It was an easy read. I could hardly put the book down. The characters are so likable. The story is wonderful. I would definately recommend this book to anyone. Truely a magnificent love story.

After forty plus years, Natalie Goodwin is finally ready to begin her own life. Two years after her divorce, she is busy opening her dream floral shop while her daughter is off attending her first year of college. Her home, family, and work are all in order. Although a little lonely, Natalie is happy doing what she wants for the first time.

Gun shy after her recent dating adventures, Natalie isn't looking for a man. Of course, that doesn't mean she can't enjoy looking at her hunky neighbor. Firefighter, Tony Cruz, is delicious eye candy and completely safe. He is nine years her junior and married - definitely not available! When Tony's cheating wife leaves him, Natalie offers him friendly comfort and understanding. What begins as friendship grows into much more. Will the duo be able to work through their age difference and its inherent problems? Can they discover what truly matters?

Leaving Normal is a realistic and emotional love story. I appreciated its authenticity and the completely believable firefighter elements. Tony and Natalie are genuinely real; they could be the people that you might know and like. While Tony might not be the perfect man, he is still to die for! He is a sweet hunk and a humble hero. Their relationship evolves gradually, and although this pace works with their storyline, the flow becomes sluggish with the additional side plots. I must admit that I wanted their physical relationship to progress more quickly. The heat is a gentle simmer that builds slowly, and if you don't mind this pace, it's a wonderful book. Sweet and inspirational, Leaving Normal gracefully explores the complexities of life and love.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent mid-life romance.......2006-02-23

After nearly 20 years of marriage, Natalie realized that the love had left the relationship, and she and hubby Greg split amicably. Two years later, after already struggling through her transitional relationship, she is finding herself attracted to the very married and much younger sexy fireman who lives across the street.

When fireman Tony suddenly finds himself single, he realizes that he is not mourning the loss of his unfaithful wife, but the loss of a relationship, and vows that his next marriage will be to someone who can also be a best friend. While nursing his wounds, he often turns to the advice of his sexy "been there, done that" neighbor, and develops feelings for her. She is reticent - the age gap is too much of a cross for her to bear, and since he has expressed an interest in having a family, she feels she is beyond that stage. He soon melts her resolve and the two embark on a deep friendship that soon turns more serious, and a tragic series of events makes them question their motivations and choices.

Humor abounds as Natalie's sister is constantly trying to get her sister out into the dating pool, and her widowed father embarks on a new relationship that takes him out of his comfort zone (and away from the white cherry slushies he is so fond of).

Unlike many romance novelists, where the main characters fall in love in the span of a week, this one takes its sweet time developing a believable relationship. Holm has created an emotional story about of a couples' journey into uncharted territory, and the lessons they learn along the way. It is thought provoking and touching and guaranteed to leave you satisfied.

            4 out of 5 stars A warm fuzzy.......2006-02-09

`Leaving Normal' by Stef Ann Holm has cheating, death, cancer, divorce, hot fireman, humor and most of all two characters that are real. This author is wonderful, I enjoyed 'Undressed' and this is another winner.

As a Mom of 3 who has been divorced and remarried, I found this book wonderful! I wasn't raised in a Christian home, but was taught 'right' from 'wrong'. People need to seek out more Biblically based books, tapes, etc and educate themselves more on the teachings of our Lord and Savior!
I'm so thankful I stumbled across the seller I bought this book from. I bought it for a friend who is struggling in her marriage and I'm now buying another copy so I can keep on. Pull out the highligher, marker, underliner and take notes!

                        Book Description

In the early morning of April 12, 1861, Captain George S. James ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter, beginning a war that would last four horrific years and claim a staggering number of lives. Since that fateful day, the debate over the causes of the American Civil War has never ceased. What events were instrumental in bringing it about? How did individuals and institutions function? What did Northerners and Southerners believe in the decades of strife preceding the war? What steps did they take to avoid war? Indeed, was the great armed conflict avoidable at all? Why the Civil War Came brings a talented chorus of voices together to recapture the feel of a very different time and place, helping the reader to grasp more fully the commencement of our bloodiest war. From William W. Freehling's discussion of the peculiarities of North American slavery to Charles Royster's disturbing piece on the combatants' savage readiness to fight, the contributors bring to life the climate of a country on the brink of disaster. Mark Summers, for instance, depicts the tragically jubilant first weeks of Northern recruitment, when Americans on both sides were as yet unaware of the hellish slaughter that awaited them. Glenna Matthews underscores the important war-catalyzing role played by extraordinary public women, who proved that neither side of the Mason-Dixon line was as patriarchal as is thought. David Blight reveals an African-American world that "knew what time it was," and welcomed war. And Gabor Boritt examines the struggle's central figure, Lincoln himself, illuminating in the years leading up to the war a blindness on the future president's part, an unwillingness to confront the looming calamity that was about to smash the nation asunder. William E. Gienapp notes perhaps the most unsettling fact about the Civil War, that democratic institutions could not resolve the slavery issue without resorting to violence on an epic scale. With gripping detail, Why the Civil War Came takes readers back to a country fraught with bitterness, confusion, and hatred--a country ripe for a war of unprecedented bloodshed--to show why democracy failed, and violence reigned.

You will not learn anything new in this book that you don't already know. The book consists of 4 or 5 different essays written by 4 or 5 different authors. It isn't a clear book describing the civil war. I was looking for a book that described each of the reasons for the start of the civil war. This book didn't do that. Each essay tried to make a different point - but it was not clear. The book was too scattered for me. So if you want a more in depth, and more straight forward book about the start of the civil war - try another author.

                        5 out of 5 stars Somehow We'd Forgotten.......2000-06-25

In the face of recent debates over the Confederate flag flying over South Carolina's capital, a lot has been said regarding the author's subject. Some contend that the war was over state's rights and others contend it was over the issue of slavery. It has even been suggested by many sources that Lincoln came to oppose slavery late. I bought this book hoping to read an author who both knew history and could examine the facts impartially. I clearly found both.

The editor explores pre-Civil War history through the voices of the main figures and groups. In the process I discovered that both states rights and anti-slavery contentions are correct. However, these two are so closely tied that it hardly matters, as you will discover through the eyes of the players. Please read this book. This book should be required reading in every high school history class in America.

I found the book to be the best slice of easy reading history I've ever read, and highly applicable to related debates of the 21st century.

Incidentally, if you are interested in the unique origins of the Republican party, the formation of our two parties, the demise of early parties, the early black leaders, the early womens' movements or even early trends in women's literature, this is an amazing read regarding those topics alone. Can't put it down, highligher in hand stuff.

                              Book Description

A dream come true for stargazers and all who have stood in awe of the night sky, The Star Lore Handbook is a complete, fully illustrated guide to identifying the eighty-eight recognized constellations and the principal stars that comprise them. Deftly weaving together astronomy, myth, and symbolism, author Geoffrey Cornelius tours the rich heritage of the stars and planets -- from meteors and orbits to astrology, moon worship, and astral tales of love and tragedy. Including a quick-reference table that lets beginners spot major constellations right away, this unique companion introduces not only modern scientific knowledge, but also the beliefs and folklore of Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, China, medieval and Renaissance Europe, and Central and Native America. Wonderfully illustrated with specially commissioned maps and artwork, color photographs, and line drawings, this is an ideal guide to the timeless celestial marvels.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to increase your enjoyment of the constellations.......1999-03-17

I tend to be very wary of astronomy books. I enjoy going out at night and looking at the night sky, but don't like to get a whole lot more technical than that. After having learned to identify some of the constellations, this book provided me with the perfect next step. It gives you just enough background knowledge to make your tour through the sky infinitely more enjoyable. The author presents simple and easy to understand information on both classic and modern constellations. I would recommend it as the perfect "not too technical" book about the lore surrounding the night sky.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to the mythology behind the constellations.......1999-01-14

Cornelius tells the stories found in the stars in an entertaining, informative way. Each constellation is studied in detail-- from the meanings (greek, arabic, or otherwise) of the star names, to a description of the objects visible through binoculars, to the myths associated with the figures. This book is a must-have for any amateur or professional astronomer.
