Excellent book.Useful,accurate,and concise imfo about the care of painted art. A must for anyone who is serious about either the care of,or preperation of fine art collectables. A must have text. If, or when this book should go out of print,don't get caught without a copy. You could become the guppy in a sea full of sharks. Hard to find knowledge about a subject where everyone is the expert,but nobody knows the answer when asked directly. All chapters are need to know and are correct technical how-to.

How are people in one of Africa's largest cities, Dar es Salaam, capable of surviving day to day when the downward decline of Tanzania's economy has become so pronounced that even high-ranking state employees receive among the lowest incomes in the country? In this impressively researched and highly original study, Aili Mari Tripp shows how the people of Dar es Salaam, through creativity and considerable ingenuity, supply for themselves the various goods and services that the government can no longer provide. With the growth of an informal economy, they have demonstrated resistance to state control, resulting in broad political, economic and social transformations within Tanzania. Moreover, the unprecedented participation of women in informal economic activities has had a profound effect on gender relations.
Tripp incorporates in-depth interviews and a field survey conducted at the household and micro-enterprise level in examining the influence and impact of the urban informal economy on Tanzanian society. This informal sector encompasses the enterprises of masons, cooks, cobblers, and tailors; a dizzying myriad of market vendors; even educators and doctors. Tripp shows how the urban informal economy challenges state-defined bases of social justice with alternative notions of economic equity. Her work is an essential contribution to the study of African politics and state-society relations.

Very well written with beautiful photographs and helpful illustrations. This nonfiction book is the perfect length for younger elementary students. My 3rd grade class enjoyed the book and became interested in the project. We wrote the school and they were very good about answering emails.

I used this book as part of a unit when I was student teaching and the children were enraptured with the theme of preservation. Perfect for the classroom setting, but don't underestimate the joy it'll bring the frog-lover in your family.

I first researched this project after reading newspaper accounts and was glad to see this story come into book form. It well illustrates the efforts of these determined students and even made the NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children list in 1992. It's a good example of a community service project for students and and teachers.

Enhanced with 186 full-color photographs, maps of habitat and range, abundance, size, venom status, prey, and behavior of species, and much, much more, Snakes Of North America: Western Region is confidently recommended as being a first-rate reference and field guide filled from cover to cover with the collective wisdom of two experienced herpetological professionals.

Not as strong as its eastern/central counterpart.......2001-08-29

Together with its companion volume, Snakes of North America: Eastern and Central Regions, this book provides a complete reference to snakes north of the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the weaker of the two volumes, however. It is slimmer, less detailed and lacks the eastern/central volume's bibliography and glossary. It covers snakes on a species-by-species basis (rather than by subspecies, which is the case in the eastern/central volume), which leaves most subspecies with a paragraph of description at most. (Are western subspecies less well-defined than eastern subspecies?) The difference probably results from the fact that the eastern/central book drew upon Tennant's earlier books on Florida and Texas snakes; this book did not have the same advantage. As well, errors in the book suggest that more careful editing was needed. At least one set of range maps was reversed, and there have been reports that some of the garter snake photos were mixed up. Accuracy in a field guide is essential; errors here can compound themselves down the road. Still worth having.
