Democratization of Expertise?: Exploring Novel Forms of Scientific Advice in Political Decision-Making (Sociology of the Sciences Yearbook)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402037538 |
Book Description
‘Scientific advice to politics’, the ‘nature of expertise’, and the ‘relation between experts, policy makers, and the public’ are variations of a topic that currently attracts the attention of social scientists, philosophers of science as well as practitioners in the public sphere and the media. This renewed interest in a persistent theme is initiated by the call for a democratization of expertise that has become the order of the day in the legitimation of research funding. The new significance of ‘participation’ and ‘accountability’ has motivated scholars to take a new look at the science – politics interface and to probe questions such as "What is new in the arrangement of scientific expertise and political decision-making?", "How can reliable knowledge be made useful for politics and society at large, and how can epistemically and ethically sound decisions be achieved without losing democratic legitimacy?", "How can the objective of democratization of expertise be achieved without compromising the quality and reliability of knowledge?"
Scientific knowledge and the ‘experts’ that represent it no longer command the unquestioned authority and public trust that was once bestowed upon them, and yet, policy makers are more dependent on them than ever before. This collection of essays explores the relations between science and politics with the instruments of the social studies of science, thereby providing new insights into their re-alignment under a new régime of governance.

Handbook of Social Choice and Welfare Volume 1 (Handbooks in Economics)
Manufacturer: North Holland ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0444829148 |
Book Description
The Handbook of Social Choice and Welfare presents, in two volumes, essays on past and on-going work in social choice theory and welfare economics. The first volume consists of four parts. In Part 1 (Arrovian Impossibility Theorems), various aspects of Arrovian general impossibility theorems, illustrated by the simple majority cycle first identified by Condorcet, are expounded and evaluated. It also provides a critical survey of the work on different escape routes from impossibility results of this kind. In Part 2 (Voting Schemes and Mechanisms), the operation and performance of voting schemes and cost-sharing mechanisms are examined axiomatically, and some aspects of the modern theory of incentives and mechanism design are expounded and surveyed. In Part 3 (structure of social choice rules), the positional rules of collective decision-making (the origin of which can be traced back to a seminal proposal by Borda), the game-theoretic aspects of voting in committees, and the implications of making use of interpersonal comparisons of welfare (with or without cardinal measurability) are expounded, and the status of utilitarianism as a theory of justice is critically examined. It also provides an analytical survey of the foundations of measurement of inequality and poverty. In order to place these broad issues (as well as further issues to be discussed in the second volume of the Handbook) in perspective, Kotaro Suzumura has written an extensive introduction, discussing the historical background of social choice theory, the vistas opened by Arrow's

Book Description
"I went into premature labor while standing on the train during the ride home one evening from work. At first I thought it was just a backache, but then the pains spread to my stomach and were worse than any menstrual cramps I had ever had ... I went straight to the hospital. The doctors gave me drugs to stop the contractions, but within hours I gave birth to our son, Joshua. He was twelve weeks premature and weighed only two and a half pounds ... I keep going over in my mind, What did I do wrong? My husband and I are both college educated, we don't drink or smoke, and I had read everything about pregnancy and childbirth."Customer Reviews:

Of Kindred Celtic Origins: Myths, Legends, Genealogy and History of an Ordinary American Family (Myths, Legends, Geneaology and History of an Ordinary American Family)
Jodie K. Scales Manufacturer: Writers Club Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595185738 |
Book Description
A compelling and evocative history of an ordinary 21st century American family detailing its varied and diverse historical and cultural elements through out history. Using records and tools as varied as archeology, anthropology, ethnology, etymology, geology, mythology, legends and historical documentation, Scales embarks on a fascinating quest to link together the pieces of a vast jigsaw of the forgotten Celtic heritage of many American families while developing a chronological framework to historical events and family bloodlines. With an astonishing insight into the cultural effects of the travels and historical events of our founding fathers, more than a dozen separate family lines are identified with their earliest American ancestors and which part of the ancient Celtic world those families came from. Reaching as far back into the origin of the Celtic people as the Sumerian Culture of 4000bc to their arrival in Ireland, Germany and Scotland sets a framework for the detailed history of the Picts and Scots who's blood still runs in many American veins.

Avian Ecology And Conservation In An Urbanizing World
John M., Ed. Marzluff Manufacturer: Kluwer Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792374584 |
Book Description
One of the most striking and persistent ways humans dominate Earth is by changing land-cover as we settle a region. Much of our ecological understanding about this process comes from studies of birds, yet the existing literature is scattered, mostly decades old, and rarely synthesized or standardized. The twenty-seven contributions authored by leaders in the fields of avian and urban ecology present a unique summary of current research on birds in settled environments ranging from wildlands to exurban, rural to urban. Ecologists, land managers, wildlife managers, evolutionary ecologists, urban planners, landscape architects, and conservation biologists will find our information useful because we address the conservation and evolutionary implications of urban life from an ecological and planning perspective. Graduate students in these fields also will find the volume to be a useful summary and synthesis of current research, extant literature, and prescriptions for future work. All interested in human-driven land-cover changes will benefit from a perusal of this book because we present high altitude photographs of each study area.Customer Reviews:
A rallying call for more than binoculars........2002-04-19
80% of the US population lives in urban or suburban areas. Finding ways to understand the birds closest to people will be a necessary challenge in the coming years if we are to successfuly manage our landscapes for wildlife and get the popular support to do it. This book is the first tome on how to do it.
Very pricey, but worth it if you're a club or wildlife department.
