5 out of 5 stars Great description of a neat place........1999-05-05

I read my friend's copy while visiting Johannesburg, and have been anxious to get my own copy. This is a really fine book for anyone who is interested in good photos and engrossing stories of travel in the remote wilds of northern Botswana, including the Kalahari and the game regions north of the Okavango. The adventures are those of a person who has made many extended trips into the Kalahari, not just a tourist who is quickly passing through. This area is now quickly becoming more and more opened up by paved roads and overrun by tourists. It may be that a person can no longer have experiences such as those described by Augustinus. If the book is indeed still available as indicated by Paul's review, I with Amazon would find a way to make it available. I want a copy. Dave

This book is not out of print as stated by amazon.com. It is published by Acorn books and is in its third edition. The editors of Getaway Magazine in South Africa, recently included it in a "ten best books on Africa of the decade". This was after a critical review of all the books published worldwide about travel and adventure in the whole of Africa in the last decade. The book is a peronalised account of the author's travels over a ten year period in the wildest remaining areas of Botswana's best game country. It is packed with facts, maps and spectacular photographs as well as paintings and sketches. In Southern Africa this book is regarded as a classic.

                      Book Description

‘Scientific advice to politics’, the ‘nature of expertise’, and the ‘relation between experts, policy makers, and the public’ are variations of a topic that currently attracts the attention of social scientists, philosophers of science as well as practitioners in the public sphere and the media. This renewed interest in a persistent theme is initiated by the call for a democratization of expertise that has become the order of the day in the legitimation of research funding. The new significance of ‘participation’ and ‘accountability’ has motivated scholars to take a new look at the science – politics interface and to probe questions such as "What is new in the arrangement of scientific expertise and political decision-making?", "How can reliable knowledge be made useful for politics and society at large, and how can epistemically and ethically sound decisions be achieved without losing democratic legitimacy?", "How can the objective of democratization of expertise be achieved without compromising the quality and reliability of knowledge?"

Scientific knowledge and the ‘experts’ that represent it no longer command the unquestioned authority and public trust that was once bestowed upon them, and yet, policy makers are more dependent on them than ever before. This collection of essays explores the relations between science and politics with the instruments of the social studies of science, thereby providing new insights into their re-alignment under a new régime of governance.

                          Description:
Identifying expertise within an organization is a critical component of any knowledge management effort. It is, however, an exceptionally resource intensive activity that is difficult to initiate and problematic to maintain. The development of experimental expertise recommender systems has prompted innovative research into the use of expertise markers found on routine information artifacts. Particular classes of information artifacts have been identified as rich possible sources for expertise markers. This paper hypothesizes about the potential for leveraging another class of artifacts, ''micronotes'', which are our ubiquitous, personal jottings of notable information. Lacking usable digital support, these are currently opaque to organizational memory systems, but may be central to our natural expertise mapping abilities. A field study designed to explore natural micronote taking behaviors is described and early findings are discussed. Implications for improving the design of mobile computing support to integrate micronotes into expertise mapping activities are also presented.

                                Book Description

The Handbook of Social Choice and Welfare presents, in two volumes, essays on past and on-going work in social choice theory and welfare economics. The first volume consists of four parts. In Part 1 (Arrovian Impossibility Theorems), various aspects of Arrovian general impossibility theorems, illustrated by the simple majority cycle first identified by Condorcet, are expounded and evaluated. It also provides a critical survey of the work on different escape routes from impossibility results of this kind. In Part 2 (Voting Schemes and Mechanisms), the operation and performance of voting schemes and cost-sharing mechanisms are examined axiomatically, and some aspects of the modern theory of incentives and mechanism design are expounded and surveyed. In Part 3 (structure of social choice rules), the positional rules of collective decision-making (the origin of which can be traced back to a seminal proposal by Borda), the game-theoretic aspects of voting in committees, and the implications of making use of interpersonal comparisons of welfare (with or without cardinal measurability) are expounded, and the status of utilitarianism as a theory of justice is critically examined. It also provides an analytical survey of the foundations of measurement of inequality and poverty. In order to place these broad issues (as well as further issues to be discussed in the second volume of the Handbook) in perspective, Kotaro Suzumura has written an extensive introduction, discussing the historical background of social choice theory, the vistas opened by Arrow's Social Choice and Individual Values, the famous "socialist planning" controversy, and the theoretical and practical significance of social choice theory. The primary purpose of this Handbook is to provide an accessible introduction to the current state of the art in social choice theory and welfare economics. The expounded theory has a strong and constructive message for pursuing human well-being and facilitating collective decision-making.

                                        Book Description

"I went into premature labor while standing on the train during the ride home one evening from work. At first I thought it was just a backache, but then the pains spread to my stomach and were worse than any menstrual cramps I had ever had ... I went straight to the hospital. The doctors gave me drugs to stop the contractions, but within hours I gave birth to our son, Joshua. He was twelve weeks premature and weighed only two and a half pounds ... I keep going over in my mind, What did I do wrong? My husband and I are both college educated, we don't drink or smoke, and I had read everything about pregnancy and childbirth."

One out of every ten babies in the United States is born prematurely, and prematurity is the leading cause of death among infants before their first birthday. In addition to being small, premature babies are developmentally unprepared for life, which can result in physical and mental disabilities. Premature babies are more likely to have respiratory problems during childhood, as well as a highter incidence of learning disabilities and problems with speech, hearing, and vision. The good news is that in many cases prematurity can be prevented.

Most women don't realize how much they can do to reduce their risks and improve the health of their unborn babies. Ever Pregnant Woman's Guide to Preventing Premature Birth is the only book of its kind to present practical, scientifically-sound information on the sixty most important risk factors identified with prematurity and how to reduce them. This book begins with a questionnaire to help you assess your personal risk factors for premature birth (e.g., family background; gynecological, obstetrical, and medical risks; stress levels; home and work environment), and makes practical recommendations for reducing those risks. Many of these suggestions are as surprising as they are effective. Did you know that vacuuming is one of the most stressful activities you can perform while pregnant? Or that noise increases your level of stress-related hormones (turn down that radio!)? Dr. Luke explains, step by step, how to make small changes in your lifestyle that can have huge health benefits for your child.

The program in this book is based on Dr. Barbara Luke's twenty years of clinical experiences studying prematurity and on a French national program that lowered the prematurity rate in that country by 32 percent in its first ten years. The book's foreword is by the director of that program, Emile Papiernik, M.D., professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, head of Maternity, Maternite Port-Royal. The preface is by George Wilbanks, M.D., President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Pregnancy is a magical, special time, filled with hopes and dreams as well as fears and anxieties. Every Pregnant Woman's Guide to Preventing Premature Birth will help to ease your fears by helping you take the positive approach to reducing some of the risks that can lead to prematurity and increasing your chances of having a healthy, full-term baby.

I really do not care for this author. If you've ever had a pregnancy loss, you might find her to be a bit insensitive. But nonetheless, this book is filled with alot of practical information and potential causes of premature labor that are not common knowledge. I recommend this book to any pregnant woman or someone contemplating pregnancy, and especially those who are high-risk for pre-term delivery.

                                          Book Description

The battle of Trafalgar decided a nation's fate, and this fascinating account tells the story of that crucial confrontation as it has never been told before. Many people know the facts about Nelson's death, but far less of the battle in which he died: a single afternoon's fighting that forever ended Napoleon's hope of invading England. With Napoleon's failure, the British navy reigned supreme on the high seas-a supremacy that lasted until the age of air power. David Howard, who served as a war correspondent during the battle of Dunkirk and won awards for his service as a secret agent during that war, writes with great understanding about fighting amidst the perils of the sea.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-01-09

So many books about famous battles are written about the strategies used. They are very high level, like "this general moved his armies here and this general moved his armies there". David Howarth tells this story from the perspective of the men who actually fought the battles, which makes the battle so much more memorable and meaningful. A very compelling read!

                                          5 out of 5 stars Napoleon's Big Blunder.......2005-10-19

With the 200 year anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar approaching, several books have recently been released about the battle. "Companion" books are being published, books describing all of the roughly 73 vessels involved are being published, and while some of these may be good, I would be willing to bet that they don't compare to Howarth's.

In Trafalgar - The Nelson Touch, you get it all. The blockade. How and why the particular Navies were positioned where they were. The events leading up to the battle and why it was fought were it was fought. The character and moral of the Navy's as well as the character of the men involved.

You get insight into Napoleon's failed attempts to direct his Navy like he did his Army. Howarth describes the abilities (or lack of) of the Navies as well as the quality of the ships and armament. He describes the 'novel' strategy used by Nelson, and how although it appears to be a bad one on paper, given the circumstances, it was ingenious.

You get the betrayals, including Napoleon's ultimate betrayal of one of his Admirals that led to a suicide.

And finally you get the disastrous aftermath of the battle, including the storm which elevated the casualties of the battle.

...and you get all of this in 180 fact filled pages, as opposed to the 300 - 400+ pages of some of the more recent books.

The book does bog down a bit during the actual battle(s). This is not so much Howarth's fault as the subject matter. Due to the fact that he was outnumbered vessel-wise, Nelson wanted the battle to be a melee, in which he separated the French/Spanish fleet and then attacked the confused boats individually. This led to a series of engagements, and by the midway point, the battle consisted of two fleets of de-masted vessels floating around blasting any vessel that happened to float across her path.

The reader does get a great glimpse as to what it must have been like on board as the vessels blasted each other with their cannons, as well as the 'brotherhood' that the Navies demonstrated by helping to rescue each other during the ensuing storm.

So if you are interested in Trafalgar, and have a empty afternoon in front of you, pick up this book and give it a read.

                                          You will not be disapointed..

4 out of 5 stars Another David Howarth Classic.......2005-01-24

David Howarth is one of those great historical narrative writers 60s style. All of this books have been reissued a number of times and there is good reason why: his style is fast, intelligent, and he is able to give you a wide-sweep of history while at the same time concentrating on the intricacies of a single historical event (usually a battle -- such as in his books on Hastings, Trafalgar, and Waterloo). All in a format under 200 pages.

Writing like this is a lost art.

Howarth begins buy giving the strategic situation and rightly concludes that England had already won the strategic sea battle long before Trafalgar. Trafalgar was the ultimate forordained denouement: France could not sally into the seas for trade or battle in either the North Sea, the Atlantic, or the Mediteranean. No Invasion of England could be contemplated. Moreover French (and their reluctant Spanish Allies) had conceded superiority to the British long before Trafalgar. The last act -- battle -- merely tactically sealed the strategic truths.

Howarth still paints an intense picture of the motivations of the French and English. French and Spanish tars were less in training and commitment, but they did engage in equal ardour when it came time for the killing. Moreover Admiral Villeneuve is a very sympathetic figure and Howarth seems to have much the measure of the man for this slender volume... ironically there is more here on Villeneuve than in the longer standard versions of this battle (such as by Schom). Howarth has a special chapter on the Storm immediately following the battle, something that is either glossed over as an ending paragraph in much larger works or often omitted. My favourite part is when the ships are sailing close-hauled for their ultimate encounter. You can feel the tension build as they slowly close for battle.

Keeping all in mind this is a great place to start a study of the battle, or the general strategic situation surrounding the Napleonic Naval Wars.

There is a lot missing, Lady Hamilton represents three pages of dedicated text (quite enough for some readers), there is little review of the naval battles preceding Trafalgar, St Vincent, the Nile etc. and there is little on the long life of Nelson --- but all the essential elements are here!

All in all this is one ripping read and if you love the clash of tall ships in battle and the feeling of wind whistling through the rigging, then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Writing and Description.......2004-12-15

I have just read this book for the first time, and it will not be the last. David Howarth brings Trafalgar and its period to life in a way that leaves me filled with admiration. This is a very fair assessment of the great battle, giving credit where credit is due. This is especially so where Admiral Villeneuve is concerned. His is a tragic story that is often overlooked because of the brilliance of Nelson. Villeneuve, a man of honor, was not without talent, but lacked the charisma that so set Nelson apart. He wasn't a coward, but a realist who knew the French navy was no match for the British. Napoleon was an army man who knew nothing about the navy, and issued impossible orders that no admiral could have carried out to satisfaction. Villeneuve faced up to Trafalgar, betrayed alike by his emperor and by so-called friends behind the scenes. Nelson was the admiral who died that day in 1805, but Villeneuve must have wished he had too. Within six months he was indeed dead, although whether by his own hand or assassination might never really be known.

For an account that conjures the battle in all its glory and horror, and that offers a considered judgment of both sides, this is the book to read. Again, and again, and again.

4 out of 5 stars Portrait of the magic of Nelson's leadership and Trafalgar.......1998-08-29

This book by David Howarth is one of two that portrays the great Lord Nelson. Nelson is portayed as a leader with uncommon touch for bold military strategy and even more uncommon touch for leading men with affection and raport. This was very unusual in 1800. This book also portrays the battle of Trafalgar in the terrible ways of naval battle with 800 men ships demolishing eachother at point blank range. The French loss was inevitable and Lond Nelson was the man who build the winning ways of the British Navy over a 30 year period. The background and mood of the times are compelling.

                                                            Book Description

A compelling and evocative history of an ordinary 21st century American family detailing its varied and diverse historical and cultural elements through out history. Using records and tools as varied as archeology, anthropology, ethnology, etymology, geology, mythology, legends and historical documentation, Scales embarks on a fascinating quest to link together the pieces of a vast jigsaw of the forgotten Celtic heritage of many American families while developing a chronological framework to historical events and family bloodlines. With an astonishing insight into the cultural effects of the travels and historical events of our founding fathers, more than a dozen separate family lines are identified with their earliest American ancestors and which part of the ancient Celtic world those families came from. Reaching as far back into the origin of the Celtic people as the Sumerian Culture of 4000bc to their arrival in Ireland, Germany and Scotland sets a framework for the detailed history of the Picts and Scots who's blood still runs in many American veins.

                                                            Book Description

One of the most striking and persistent ways humans dominate Earth is by changing land-cover as we settle a region. Much of our ecological understanding about this process comes from studies of birds, yet the existing literature is scattered, mostly decades old, and rarely synthesized or standardized. The twenty-seven contributions authored by leaders in the fields of avian and urban ecology present a unique summary of current research on birds in settled environments ranging from wildlands to exurban, rural to urban. Ecologists, land managers, wildlife managers, evolutionary ecologists, urban planners, landscape architects, and conservation biologists will find our information useful because we address the conservation and evolutionary implications of urban life from an ecological and planning perspective. Graduate students in these fields also will find the volume to be a useful summary and synthesis of current research, extant literature, and prescriptions for future work. All interested in human-driven land-cover changes will benefit from a perusal of this book because we present high altitude photographs of each study area.

I am a masters student studying birds in the urban environment, so this book was just the tool I needed to help me get interested and educated on urban ecology and birds. The authors are leaders in urban ecology, or up and coming. They all write magnificent chapters that outline the need for study, the pertinent questions we should be asking, and even case studies. The bibliographies alone are a wonderful source.

While this book seems designed mostly for researchers, bird clubs and birders would do well to have a copy of this text on their bookshelves. It will provide fascinating insights and ideas for understanding birds in the urban ecosystem and its adjacent areas.

80% of the US population lives in urban or suburban areas. Finding ways to understand the birds closest to people will be a necessary challenge in the coming years if we are to successfuly manage our landscapes for wildlife and get the popular support to do it. This book is the first tome on how to do it.

Very pricey, but worth it if you're a club or wildlife department.
