Samuelson is the 2nd greatest economist of the 20th century.......2004-09-06

This book is not for beginners.At a minimum,potential readers must have taken the two semester introductory Principles course in economics,intermediate micro and macro economics,3 semesters of calculus,introductory and intermediate statistics,and intermediate level econometrics.Samuelson's scholarship is so renown that no single volume can do him justice.However, the reader will find a substantial amount of critical comment contained in these essays.Samuelson's work is carefully examined and scrutinized.The final assessment,however,is that the scientific contributions overwhelm whatever small defects may exist in his work as a whole.The most interesting essays in the book are the historical overview provided by K. Puttaswamaiah and the personal assessment of Samuelson made by F.Hahn.The rest of this review will correct the misstatements of a previous reviewer who appears not to have read the book he claimed to be reviewing.Two quotations are taken out of context from the 12th edition of Samuelson's ECONOMICS textbook written in 1985.No page citations are given. One of the quotations is a misquotation.On p.775,Samuelson states a fact:"What counts is results,and there can be no doubt that the Soviet planning system has been a powerful engine for economic growth."The other reviewer skips 14 paragraphs and deliberately gives a misquotation.I will give Samuelson's actual statement and allow future readers of these reviews to make up their own minds as to the accuracy of the other review.On p.776,Samuelson states:"The Soviet model has surely demonstrated that a command economy is capable of mobilizing resources for rapid growth and awesome military power.BUT(reviewer's emphasis)it has done so in an atmosphere of great human sacrifice-even loss of life-and political repression.Is such a frightful human toll worth the economic gains?This is one of the most profound dilemmas of human society."Again, SAMUELSON HAS STATED A FACT.

Be wary of overly educated intellectuals........2004-06-08

By that, I mean people who have spent their entire life in academia, without setting foot in the real world. Point in fact, this quote from Mr. Paul Samuelson: "What counts is results, and there can be no doubt that the Soviet planning system has been a powerful engine for economic growth.... The Soviet model has surely demonstrated that a command economy is capable of mobilizing resources for rapid growth." That was in 1985, just a few short years before that "powerful" engine collapsed, bankrupt and faltering for decades. Where was Paul? With his nose in a book, without a clue. For some reason, these people receive Nobel prizes, even when they couldn't be more wrong. Then, they teach our youth. Sad.

How did Britain emerge as a world power and later as the world's first industrial society? What policies, cultural practices, and institutions were responsible for this outcome? How were the inevitable disruptions to social and political life coped with? This innovative volume illustrates the contribution of economic thinking (scientific, official and popular) to the public understanding of British economic experience over the period 1688-1914. Political economy has frequently served as the favourite mode of public discourse when analysing or justifying British economic policies, performance and institutions. A soldier's story.......2002-10-10

From the point of view of the enlisted man, this is a really good book. It held my interest well. Let's face it, the enlisted man's perspective of the War Between the States, or any war for that matter, is going to be very narrow. The rank and file do not have the luxury of having access to the grand strategy of general officers. All they can relate is what went on in front of them. Otherwise it wouldn't be their story. This book is about what one common soldier saw, experienced, and felt. And it let me see a refreshing point of view.

Interesting escapes from Union hands!.......2002-07-12

Not many books seem to cover a scout's exploits during the Civil War in the form of a personal memoir. Berry Benson's account seems to be a diary mixed with recollection and struggle. Benson's writing is vague at times and a bit hard to follow. He seems to jump from event or time frame without much flow or detail. His involvement at Sharpsburg, Chancelorsville and Petersburg is disappointing when it comes to detail and the action. Had an author placed this book together to build the time frame up and then switch to Benson's accounts would have made this book easier to follow or had Benson been more descriptive in his story it would have completed this book.

What made this book interesting was his escapes from two Union prisons and his personal struggle to survive and get back to Virginia. His descriptions of his escapes and his run for freedom was very interesting and made this book come to life.

The title itself which mentions sharpshooter fails to live up to it's name as very little is written about his involvement as one and again the detail is missing. Had the title mentioned escaping twice from Union hands, it would have been properly titled. Though the lack of details and vague approach stumbles the reader an opposite read is featured in regards to his survival and escaping Union control. Without his prison stories which fortunately takes up a large portion of this book, it would have been confusing and frustrating. Because of those stories I felt this book deserves a 4 star rating.

While not splendidly written, a unique and must read memoir........2002-01-14

Berry Benson tells it as it was. He does not fill the pages with fluff, but merely gives a straightforward account of his trials and tribulations during the war. At first, I was skeptical about all that he claimed to have gone through, but after some research, his story holds true. Benson was just shy of 18 when he joined the Confederate army. During his service, he was a sharpshooter, fought under Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson, was captured and escaped TWICE: once from Point Lookout and once from Elmira. At times, I wished that he would have gone into more detail, and that is the only downfall of this book. For example: he goes into some description of Point Lookout yet fails to give a good picture of Elmira. However, his story is not one to miss and I suggest it for anyone wanting to read a more personal account of the war that is a little out of the ordinary.
