Book Description

Long hailed as a supreme example of American city planning, Monument Avenue is home to some of Richmond, Virginia's, most prestigious houses and distinguished architecture--and to the unique procession of statues from which the street takes its name. Initially planned in 1890 around a memorial to Robert E. Lee, over the next four decades the avenue evolved into a parade of statues honoring heroes of the Confederacy. In the mid-1990s, however, the dedication of a controversial memorial to African American tennis player Arthur Ashe signaled that Monument Avenue's meaning had broadened beyond commemorating the Lost Cause.

This book traces the history of Monument Avenue, of its buildings and statuary, and of the people who helped create one of America's great streets. Enriched by more than three hundred photographs, plans, and drawings, it chronicles the avenue's development, captures architectural details and city preservation efforts, and places the avenue's story in local, regional, and national context.

Built to reflect the hopes and attitudes of Richmonders at the turn of the last century, Monument Avenue exists nearly intact today as the centerpiece of a flourishing neighborhood, even as its meaning continues to be redefined.

          Book Description

In recent years, scientists have begun to focus on the idea that healthy, functioning ecosystems provide essential services to human populations, ranging from water purification to food and medicine to climate regulation. Lacking a healthy environment, these services would have to be provided through mechanical means, at a tremendous economic and social cost.

Nature and the Marketplace examines the controversial proposition that markets should be designed to capture the value of those services. Written by an economist with a background in business, it evaluates the real prospects for various of nature's marketable services to "turn profits" at levels that exceed the profits expected from alternative, ecologically destructive, business activities. The author:

          .

Nature and the Marketplace presents an accessible introduction to the concept of ecosystem services and the economics of the environment. It offers a clear assessment of how market approaches can be used to protect the environment, and illustrates that with a number of cases in which the value of ecosystems has actually been captured by markets.

The book offers a straightforward business economic analysis of conservation issues, eschewing romantic notions about ecosystem preservation in favor of real-world economic solutions. It will be an eye-opening work for professionals, students, and scholars in conservation biology, ecology, environmental economics, environmental policy, and related fields.

4 out of 5 stars trading pollution permits.......2006-06-28

Heal explains how one might put a value on an ecosystem, or parts thereof. It's a relatively recent approach that attempts to avoid a tragedy of the commons with respect to the environment, be it local or even global.

A very useful idea described is the trading of pollution permits. The latter are rights to pollute. The premise is that instead of a government trying to mandate a minimum pollution level, it lets a free market determine this, by giving monetary value to permits. So that a company has incentive to develop or use innovative ways to minimise its pollution. Hence being able to sell any net gains to others. This also avoids the government trying to set a value on a permit.

The book suggests that carbon permits might be crucial in battling global warming.

            Book Description

The five parts of this collection of essays systematically and thoroughly examine the two competing theories of balance of payments and adjustment, namely the Keynesian and the Monetary approaches. Each part deals with specific aspects of the two approaches. Part I surveys the theories behind these two approaches, looking at the presuppositions, main theory, and policy recommendations which they include. Part II examines the empirical literature and describes the numerous models which have been proposed. Part III critiques the two theories on their assumptions, policy advice and empirical modeling. Part IV compares and contrasts the two views, both theoretically and empirically. Empirical studies on different countries are performed to emphasize the differing set of accounts and variables of the two approaches. Part V considers the approaches in a regime of flexible exchange rates. Scholars, students and researchers will find this collection of great help in understanding the two approaches to balance of payments and adjustment.

                Book Description

In this new edition, Samuel P. Hays expands the scope of his pioneering account of the ways in which Americans reacted to industrialism during its early years from 1885 to 1914. Hays now deepens his coverage of cultural transformations in a study well known for its concise treatment of political and economic movements.

Hays draws on the vast knowledge of America's urban and social history that has been developed over the last thirty-eight years to make the second edition an unusually well-rounded study. He enhances the original coverage of politics, labor, and business with new accounts of the growth of cities, the rise of modern values, cultural conflicts with Native Americans and foreign nations, and changing roles for women, African-Americans, education, religion, medicine, law, and leisure. The result is a tightly woven portrait of America in transition that underscores the effects of impersonal market forces and greater personal freedom on individuals and chronicles such changes as the rise of social inequality, shifting power, in the legal system, the expansion of the federal government, and the formation of the Populist, Progressive, and Socialist parties.

                3 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2005-12-29

From the last chapter of the book: "The unifying theme of American history between 1885 and 1914, so many historians have argued, was a popular attack against corporate wealth...This analysis accepts, uncritically, the popular ideas of the Populist-Progressive Era. It is a far too simple explanation." About the popular movements of that era: "They comprised a reaction not against the corporation alone but also against industrialism and the many ways in which it affected the lives of Americans...they attempted too cope with industrial change in all its ramifications...they centered their fire on the business leader, but he was a symbol of change which they could conveniently attack, rather than the essence of change itself."

3 out of 5 stars The Response to Industrialism 1885-1914.......1999-11-30

I can't say I thought it was interesting, but that was mainly due to the fact that I bought it only for a school assignment. I would like to note that it goes in depth into industrialization and I think it was a great learning tool.

                                    Book Description

On 1 July 1965 the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) was officially activated and was ordered to Vietnam beginning 28 July 1965. In a matter of three and half weeks the newly formed division, with 16,000 men and 434 helicopters-Chinooks (CH-47s), Flying Cranes (CH-54s), Mohawks (OV-1s), UH-1s and OH-13s-was prepared to enter combat. Within 90 days of becoming the Army's first airmobile division, the 'First Team' was in combat as the first fully committed division of the Vietnam War. On 10 October 1965, in Operation 'Shiny Bayonet', the First Team initiated its first brigade-size airmobile action against the enemy. The troopers had but a short wait before they faced a tougher test of their fighting skills-the 35-day Pleiku Campaign, an air assault mission to pursue and fight the enemy across 2,500 square miles of jungle. Troopers swooped down on the NVA 33rd Regiment before it could get away, scattering and quickly smashing it. Five days later, on 14 November, the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry air-assaulted into the Ia Drang where the division's first medal of honor in the Vietnam War was awarded. When the Pleiku Campaign ended on 25 November, troopers of the 'First Team' had paid a heavy price for its success, having lost some 300 killed in action, half of them in one disastrous ambush. Bloody but unbowed, the division would go on to take part in many more air assaults and play a leading role in defence against the Tet offensive, driving out the NVA and Viet Cong invaders from Hue and, in Operation 'Pegasus', relieving the 3,500 U.S. Marines and 2,100 ARVN soldiers besieged by nearly 20,000 enemy at Khe Sanh. On 1 May 1970, the 'First Team' was 'First into Cambodia' hitting what was previously a Communist sanctuary but the campaign had severe political repercussions for the Nixon Administration. Pressure was mounting to withdraw US forces from the war.

Although there would be further assault operations, the war was beginning to wind down and 26 March 1971 officially marked the end of duties in Vietnam for the 1st Cavalry Division, although it was only on 5 May 1971 that the colours moved from Vietnam to Fort Hood, Texas. For all those interested in military history, the new 'Spearhead' series is an excellent account of each of the individual units. Written by acknowledged experts in the subject, each volume is a detailed account of the development and operational record of some of the most famous military units in history.

Once again Ian Allen has produced an excellent short history as part of its SPEARHEAD series. "1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: The `First Team,'" by Simon Dunstan is a 96-page, full-color (and mostly) photographic treatment of the First Team's tour in Vietnam. Dunstan's study provides a comprehensive introduction to the Air Cavalry. The 1st Cavalry Division traces its linage back to the early 19th Century and fought proudly and well in both World War II and Korea. The unit was re-designated as the Army's first Airmobile Division on July 1, 1965 and ordered to Vietnam. Within a month, the division's16,000 men and more than 400 helicopters were prepared to enter combat. The unit fought its first major engagement in November 1965 in the Ia Drang Valley, a bloody battle fully covered in Lt. General Hal Moore's award-winning book (and subsequent movie) We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young.

The First Team's history in Vietnam mirrors all of the units that fought there. It was also the first unit into Cambodia in 1970 and in nearly continuous combat from 1965-1970. The unit returned to Fort Hood, Texas, in 1970. The 1st Cavalry Division served in Bosnia and elements are in Iraq as of the writing of this review. The well selected and outstanding photos are complimented by a short but well-written text. Several informative sidebars describe a variety of things, including the design of the division's colorful unit crest. Includes nearly 100 color and a few black and white photographs, maps, glossary, timeline. "1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: The `First Team,'" by Simon Dunstan. ISBN 0-7110-3042-1 (Ian Allen), paper, 96 pages, $19.95. Recommended for Vietnam, air history buffs. Review by Lee Merideth

I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. The writing is delightful and the author tells her story sympathetically and sensibly. Anyone who has ever rescued a baby bird will be thrilled by this amazing story.
