This guidebook is geared toward anyone who wants to get out and see San Diego's best buildings. By using the regional map provided, even those new to San Diego can figure out how to get where they want to go. Each neighborhood has its own map, and, wherever possible, essential buildings are clustered within walking distance of each other on one map. In many neighborhoods, one may park their car and explore the architectural attractions on foot.
Downtown San Diego and urban neighborhoods like Mission Hills and North Park get their obvious due, but this guide also includes beach cities and the North Coast as far as Oceanside, the inland sections of North County, East County, and it extends south to San Ysidro and Tijuana. Styles covered range from modern to Mediterranean
The full-color book has photographs to accompany each of the hundreds of listings, but is still compact enough to fit in a car's glove compartment.

Don't bother save your money!!!!!!.......2007-09-28
Very dissapointing. I expected a detailed architecture book of San Diegan monuments and buildings. Instead, I found it to be no more than a sub-par tourinsm guide. It has small pictures and just over caption size amounts of information. Do youself a favor save your money. You would be better of taking the next San Diego travel brosure you find. At least you'll get more information. :(
Good, but depends on what you like.......2007-04-04
This is a nice book. It's well organized, with insightful essays and thorough geographic coverage. It includes at least one color photograph for each entry. But the entries themselves will determine whether you like this book or not. Deco and Modernism rule the roost for this author, and the selection of buildings reveals that. It's not a guide of historic architecture, per se. Sure, you'll find the obligatory gaslamp district, Old Town and Balboa Park in here, but not the subtler more hidden gems scattered around Bankers Hill, Olive Park or Hillcrest. There is also a heavy emphasis on domestic architecture, which leaves enthusiasts of traditional religious and academic buildings (such as myself) somewhat disappointed.
Cool but Kind of Rah-Rah..........2004-05-26
Handy to have around. Certainly the most comprehensive (and only) guide to San Diego architecture that I've been able to find. Well organized with plenty of pictures and addresses. Also contains several mini-narratives of regional history.
Sutro isn't biased towards one or more specific time periods as compared to other time periods. This suprised me, but I guess it reflects his attempt to be even handed (I also noted that the Publisher is supported by several developers). Whatever, Sutro's credentials are bonafide as a journalist, so I won't quibble.
Still, it was a little bit shocking to hear him waxing enthusiasticly about some of the more recent condo developments downtown.
Also, I saw an unaddressed picture of a Victorian in the Bankers Hill section of the book that has been moved to Golden Hill. I wasn't sure what was up with that.
Perhaps the coolest part of this book is reading about the past (often bawdy) history of some of the buildings in Downtown and the East Village. For instance, they used to keep zoo animals in the basement of the Granger Building (5th and Broadway), and the Jerome's Furniture warehouse at fifteenth and Broadway was once a venue where people watched boxing and wrestling matches!
Another highlight is his section on the East County region. I was fairly dissapointed with the coverage of areas like Del Mar and National City.
All criticism aside, the subject matter, clear organization and over all usefulnesss make this book a "must have" for anyone interested in the subject.

This book has been a great find. It is well organized with buildings grouped in sections based on their neighborhood or community location--39 different divisions. Each section provides a building-coded map and a brief but good overview of the area. The biggest plus--a photo for EACH building, unfortunately not always a feature of architectural guidebooks.
A Great guidebook.......2003-01-15
This is a fine book -- I already took two of the walking tours and it was very enjoyable to see new places in neighborhoods I thought I knew so well. The author really did his homework, and it shows in the introductions to each area--good, clear writing is so rare these days. Plus the color photographs are excellent and there is one for every listing!

Environmental sustainability and social, or distributive, justice are both widely regarded as desirable social objectives. But can we assume that they are compatible with each other? In this path-breaking study, Professor Dobson, a leading expert on environmental politics, analyses the complex relationship between these two pressing objectives. Environmental sustainability is taken to be a contested idea, and three distinct conceptions of it are described and explored. These conceptions are then examined in the context of fundamental distributive questions such as: Among whom or what should distribution take place? What should be distributed? What should the principle of distribution be? The author critically examines the claims of the `environmental justice' and `sustainable development' movements that social justice and environmental sustainability are points on the same virtuous circle, and concludes that radical environmental demands are only incompletely served by couching them in terms of justice.

Kimberly J. Garrow's "A Mother's Journey: Through Laughter and Tears" is a must-read for any mother or mother-to-be. Her anecdotes and stories, in particular her ability to find humor in the craziness of day-to-day life with children, will resonate with anyone who has ever loved a child. Garrow writes with a casual, conversational tone that allows her pure passion for her subject to shine through. As cliche as it may sound, I laughed, I cried, and I read it all over again. I am very hopeful that "A Mother's Journey: The Saga Continues" will follow in a few years!

Still vivid in many Americans' memories are the 444 days of 1979 when Islamic militants held U.S. diplomatic personnel hostage in Iran. Though their story has been told before, never has it been related from such a perspective. Unique among the hostages, the author was an officer for the Central Intelligence Agency serving at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Once his CIA connection was discovered, Bill Daugherty became a special target of his captors and was subjected to extraordinarily harsh treatment. He managed to survive the ordeal by relying upon his Marine Corps training and combat experience and his remarkable inner reserve of fortitude. Ultimately he was awarded the State Department Medal of Valor and the CIA Exceptional Service Medal. Drawing on intelligence information not readily available to previous writers, recently declassified materials, interviews with such key government officials as former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski and former CIA director and ambassador to Iran Richard Helms, and to his own firsthand knowledge, Daugherty sheds light on this disturbing event, particularly with respect to the decision-making process in the White House. Among his revelations is the involvement of the Soviet Union. Despite his personal involvement, Daugherty has produced an impressively objective account of the tragedies and triumphs that marked this black time in U.S. history. It is both a harrowing adventure story and a serious look at U.S.-Iran relations. The pivotal event continues to evoke emotions and begs careful analysis for potential lessons learned.

A C.I.A. prisoner of the Iranians........2005-03-14
Daugherty was one of three Case Officers of the C.I.A. in the American Embassy in Tehran when it was seized by Iranian militants in 1979. Daugherty describes his captivity at the hands of the Iranians and gives a short history of Iran-USA relations proceeding the crisis. This is a very informative read, and I think very balanced at least in the view of internal American politics. The author is very forthcoming on how he views his Iranian captors. He concludes and I agree that they were ignorant and naive in their beliefs. Tehran Mary is portrayed at the height of her ignorance when she didn't even know that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor. She is now a high official in the Iranian government. Daugherty describes his views on his Iranian captors, and it is not a pretty picture. No wonder the U.S. opposes Iran having nuclear weapons.
The author does a great job of describing his introgation, and internment by the Iranian radicals He successfully opposed them for 444 days. I rated this only four stars, because of the slow start of the book. Otherwise a great book.
A Timely Review for Those Who Remember.......2002-06-11
Author William Daugherty provides the reader with a review of the incidents leading up to the 1979 taking of American hostages from the American embassy in Iran. The first nine chapters provide you with background information regarding the shah and relations between the the United States and Iran. The author then provides us with details regarding the taking of the embassy by the Iranians, their unskilled attempts at questioning him, the food they were provided to eat, and their movement from one place to another. Author Daugherty believes the embassy would not have been taken over by the Iranians if the shah had come directly to the U.S. from Iran in 1979 for medican treatment. However, it was a mistake to let the shah "roam the world for ten months" before entering the U.S. that led the embassy to be taken over by the Iranians. Bitterness towards then President Carter was in the minds of the former hostages when released. Carter addressed the former hostages and took a few polite questions until a State Department officer commented that the embassy had provided plenty of advance warning of what would happen if the shah entered the United States. Mr. Carter then looked to the floor, raised his head and smiled, and said he wanted his picture taken with each of them. Thus ended the meeting. The author does, however, praise Mr. Carter for his volunteer work since leaving office. The author also does a great job in providing examples of discussions with the Iranian guards and the futility of dealing with people who have closed minds. The Iranians somehow believed that the removal of President Carter in favor of Ronald Reagan would help their cause. They assumed that anyone who was Carter's opponent would be their friend. This despite the fact they were holding Americans against their will, claiming America was their enemy, and desecrating the American flag. I don't have time to list any additional examples here, but page 163 provides an outstanding example of the logic of their reasoning regarding stopping for a traffic light at 2:00 a.m.
Resist Terror and Survive with Class.......2001-10-24
How can I most effectively resist my captors without being self destructive? This seminal question was answered by Stockdale in Hanoi, taught by Hegdahl in Navy Survival School, and practiced by Daugherty in Tehran. The lessons are all the more important today in our campaign against world terrorists. Once a master of resistance, Daugherty had become a master story teller and his book rings true.This is a must read for anyone going into combat and those who support them.
My review is based on 2,221 days experience as a prisoner of the Communist North Vietnamese and 5,475 days as a clinical social worker working mostly with veterans and active duty personnel.

Chris Feare wrote an excellent title on Starlings back in '78 and he's done wonders once again. Both for researchers like myself and avid bird enthusiasts, this is an excellent reference book.
