Small Spaces, Large Ideas.......2002-09-19

I have found this book to be an excellent resource. The pictures are beautiful and the text was easy and delightful to read. The homes examined in the case studies make excellent use of the space they are given (some as small as 300 sq. ft) and are inspirational. This book has given me some great ideas for my home!

Fun book to browse, but there are other choices, too........2002-01-04

Like the title suggests, this is a coffee table sized book about homes that are primarily glass, generally in the classic modern tradition. The book is in five sections: Pioneers, Glass Structures, Landscape Houses, Urban Houses, and Glass Features. It is wonderful to browse. A minor weakness in the book is the layout of some pictures; some are too small and others go on both sides of the page but the book crease sometimes interupts the flow of the picture. The text, while often useful, sometimes could have been better understood if a simple drawing of the floorplan was more often included. A good, solid and fun title to read that includes more types of buildings, like a townhouse, than in other titles. But I would consider purchasing Classic Modern; Mid-Century Modern at Home, by Deborah Dietsch, or Living Modern; Bringing Modernism Home, by Andrew Weaving before purchasing this title.

I recommend this superb book to all U/W photographers........1998-06-09

I have read this book several times, and review it before any major photo expedition. Howard concentrates on the essential art of underwater photography in a concise, readable, meaningful way. He avoids extraneous technical information that so many other manuals use as filler, and focuses clearly on the essence of underwater photography. I gave my original copy away as a gift, and was overjoyed when I was able to pick up a used copy of this out of print paperback. I recommend this superb book to all underwater photographers, new and old.

A great synthesis and interpretation! Sherry Cooper articulately examines the whole range of key forces driving the global economy and helps the reader make sense of seeming contradictions and incredible volatility. Coverage ranges from technology and biotech. through demographic and institutional change. Even though it was written well before the Sept 11 events, the contextual background is totally relevant and insightful in the fog of today.

I assigned this as required reading for a group of my managers. It is a very good resource for me and for them.

Plenty of nuggets, but not a feast.......2006-08-17

One of the promises I make to my students in MGT 512 is that if they recommend a business book, I will buy it, read it and review it.

I like the layout of the book and some of the bold statements, here is an example: If you don't lose 20% of your business on price, your prices aren't high enough.

I like the premise and agree with participative management and empowering people and I resonated with many of the stories where Belasco and Stayer fell off the bus.

What didn't work for me was the organization. The book jumps from here to there without transitions. I suppose it would work OK as a business devotional where you read one section every day, but for sustained reading it is hard work and worse, that impacts retention. If I invest the time to buy and read a business book, if I agree with what it says, I want to retain some of the information to apply and that is hard with lots of choppy little sections that do not flow.

Would I recommend the book? If you are struggling to overcome the "I am the guy in charge, let's move out" paradigm it could certainly be helpful. If you have already adopted an inclusive approach to management, this probably will not help you in your journey.

A Leadership Book Worth Reading.......2003-06-17

Flight of the Buffalo discusses the fact that the business world has changed. To stay competitive business leaders must also change and change the way our businesses operate. The only things that are constant are that change will continue to impact the way business is done and the speed of this change will continue to increase. How do you satisfy (retain) that current customer, or acquire that next customer in this continually changing competitive environment? First, as a leader you must learn to learn and learn at a faster rate. The foundation for all change is learning. Second, it is important that changes be made to the organizational culture in order to accomplish the changes required by the organization to allow employees to lead. The culture needs to change to remove the mentality that we are all victims because we have no control over any of the tasks required to make the customer happy, to one in which we all have ownership of the problems our companies/customers face. There are a number of obstacles that stand in our way as leaders. Many leaders within our companies hesitate to empower their employees and give them responsibilities for fear that they will not have anything to do themselves. Anyone who struggles with relinquishing control and trusting their coworkers to share in the responsibilities of the organization should read this book.

Although the book discusses many important aspects of leadership and developing a culture in which employees do lead, the book lacks in two areas. First, many of the concepts presented in the book were repeated numerous times. As I read the book I felt like I had already read that page. Secondly, the book does not do justice to the concept of letting employees lead. It does discuss at detail how the leader's mentality has to change to effectively lead an organization where the employees lead, but it does not discuss when this is appropriate. The book is subtitled "Soaring to Excellence, Learning to Let Employees Lead," and it may have been the author's intent not to discuss the ramifications of this change on the employees, but instead focus on the real problem, the leadership, for which the author does an excellent job at detailing. After reading the book I am left with many questions: Does every company need to change to a flock of geese to remain competitive, or are there situations where the lead buffalo is a necessity to running the business? What if employees do not want to take on the responsibilities of leading the organization? Are there changes within the employee reward system to effectively deal with this change in the organization? How do we as leaders handle resistance to this new system? The book only brings us half way in our understanding of how to let employees lead.

The "Flight of the Buffalo" is an interesting book for managers and leaders of today society. The idea that let the people who work with the product, own the responsebility of fixing the problem is a fresh outlook. The difference in being a manger and leader is spelled out so clearly, that the most elementry person can grab the idea. This book focus on "how can you run an organzation from the clouds?" In todays ideas, you have to meld three things together, what the employees want, what the buyer wants, and what the bottom line is. This book explains you can manage these items yourself or you can lead you people in finding ways they can do it for themselves.

This work certainly does not show Cornwell at his best. The plot is thick and slow, and the book is really boring. Stick with Sharpe, Starbuck, or even Redcoat for much better works than this one. Avoid.

Could of happened........2007-07-01

Cornwell is a master story teller. His tale may be close to the truth. Religion seems to be at the root cause of so many mysteries and atrocities that his tale is credible. Good book to read, very entertaining.

Stonehendge.......2007-05-16

As ususal Bernard Cornwell magically carries you back in time. While this story is obviously all fiction his ability to make the characters and possiblities real is a joy to experience. He supplies the reader with imaginative story line and believable scenarios. Althougth you know the end before you even open the book, the journey was enlightening and thought provoking. A great story that keeps you thinking even after the last page.

I thought this book was fantastic. I listened to the audio version and it kept me captivated from the first minute I started listening (It was wonderfully read). I think anyone who finds fault with this book must have been hoping to do so from the onset. This book is a great read (or listen in my case). I think it is an ingenious fictional (yet probably fairly acurate from an antropology point of view) tale which describes the bringing about of the great wonder of Stonehenge.

This book provides a timely and persuasive critique of the metropolitan (post-colonial) academism. It succseesfully links third world criticism with its long tradition while incorporating it to the contemporary global capitalism. It is a response of the critical left to "silencing past" by the post-colonials and seeking the ways to revitalize third world praxis in a new world of global wild capitalism which may not be felt properly from New York!

A Splendid Portrayal of Indian Birds.......2001-07-05

India has among its more than 1200 species some of the most beautiful birds in the world, and they have long attracted artists in the portrayal of their "splendid plumage." For the Mughal court, Indian painters provided brilliant natural history drawings and miniatures, and in the late 18th and early 19th century, British officials, as they extended their presence in India, recruited Indian artists in scientific investigation and depiction of Indian fauna--and none more richly than birds. Many of the British civil servants were themselves amateur artists of considerable ability and a good number were passionate ornithologists. The result was a phenomenal collection of paintings and drawings of Indian birds and a large number of often sumptuous volumes of prints portraying the birds of India and the subcontinent. Jagmohan Mahajan opens Splendid Plumage: Indian Birds by British Artists with an illuminating essay on the history of British ornithology in India and on the collections of paintings and prints that came out of the British encounter with avian life in India. The greater portion of the book is devoted to 60 full-page color plates reproducing watercolors and prints from some of the finest of these collections. These include previously unpublished watercolors by Christopher Webb Smith, c. 1830, and representative prints from James Forbes's Oriental Memoirs (1813), John Edward Gray's Illustrations of Indian Zoology (1830-35), John Gould's A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains (1830-33), and Allan Octavian Hume and C. H. T. Marshall's The Game Birds of India, Burmah, and Ceylon (1879-81), among others. Splendid Plumage is handsomely produced and will be richly rewarding to anyone interested in the birds of India and, more generally, in artists' portrayal of birds.
