Must-have for commercial interior designers.......2006-05-03
This book provides a good conceptual approach to designing the layout and organization of commercial spaces. There are many diagrams and sketches illustrating the concepts of space, volume, flow, order, repetition, etc. The only thing is the photographs, while numerous, are just black and white. Helps keep the cost down though. Any student or new professional in interior design should get this book,

Book Description
Growing Greener is an illustrated workbook that presents a new look at designing subdivisions while preserving green space and creating open space networks. Randall Arendt explains how to design residential developments that maximize land conservation without reducing overall building density, thus avoiding the political and legal problems often associated with "down-zoning."
The author offers a three-pronged strategy for shaping growth around a community's special natural and cultural features, demonstrating ways of establishing or modifying the municipal comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and subdivision ordinance to include a strong conservation focus. Open space protection becomes the central organizing principle for new residential development, and the open space that is protected is laid out to form an interconnected system of protected lands running across a community.
The book offers:
- detailed information on how to conduct a community resource inventory
- a four-step approach to designing conservation subdivisions
- extensive model language for comprehensive plans, subdivision ordinances, and zoning ordinances
- illustrated design principles for hamlets, villages, and traditional small town neighborhoods
In addition, Growing Greener includes eleven case studies of actual conservation developments in nine states, and two exercises suitable for group participation. Case studies include: Ringfield, Chadds Ford Township, Pennsylvania; The Fields of St. Croix, City of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; Prairie Crossing, Grayslake, Illinois; The Meadows at Dolly Gordon Brook, York, Maine; Farmcolony, Standsville, Virginia; The Ranch at Roaring Fork, Carbondale, Colorado; and others.
Growing Greener builds upon and expands the basic ideas presented in Arendt's earlier work Conservation Design for Subdivisions, broadening the scope to include more detailed sections on the comprehensive planning process and information on how zoning ordinances can be updated to incorporate the concept of conservation design. It is the first practical publication to explain in detail how resource-conserving development techniques can be put into practice by municipal officials, residential developers, and site designers, and it offers a simple and straightforward approach to balancing opportunities for developers and conservationists.

Book Description
One of the most important functions of government--risk management--is one of the least well understood. Moving beyond the most familiar public functions--spending, taxation, and regulation--When All Else Fails spotlights the government's pivotal role as a risk manager. It reveals, as never before, the nature and extent of this governmental function, which touches almost every aspect of economic life.
In policies as diverse as limited liability, deposit insurance, Social Security, and federal disaster relief, American lawmakers have managed a wide array of private-sector risks, transforming both the government and countless private actors into insurers of last resort. Drawing on history and economic theory, David Moss investigates these risk-management policies, focusing in particular on the original logic of their enactment. The nation's lawmakers, he finds, have long believed that pervasive imperfections in private markets for risk necessitate a substantial government role. It remains puzzling, though, why such a large number of the resulting policies have proven so popular in a country famous for its anti-statism. Moss suggests that the answer may lie in the nature of the policies themselves, since publicly mandated risk shifting often requires little in the way of invasive bureaucracy. Well suited to a society suspicious of government activism, public risk management has emerged as a critical form of government intervention in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on economic policy out there.......2003-11-08
I bought this book on the strength of a review in The Economist and was not disappointed. With policies as varied as limited liability, central banking, deposit insurance, and Social Security, American legislators transformed government into an insurer of last resort. Sometimes they shift risk from prospective victims to those better able to afford the loss (product liability); at other times they spread catastrophic risks over the whole tax base (flood insurance). The book charts the expansion of government in the United States from the late 19th century to its zenith in the late 1970s. The author answers the objections of the Chicago and Austrian schools - Becker, Hayek, Mises, and the others - in convincing fashion thanks to its moderate tone and extensive research. The prose is clear, surprising for a book dealing with such complex subject matter. The chapter on the emergence of limited liability corporations is particularly strong. Unfortunately, the chapter on product liability could have used a bit more skepticism. Few readers will share the author's view that tort lawyers are an unalloyed blessing. The author sidesteps many of the problems we now face with exploding damage awards and wide discrepancies in the awards handed down in various jurisdictions. Nor does he grapple with the consequences these problems impose for medical research and the US insurance industry.

Book Description
High and persistent unemployment has been experienced by most developed countries during the 1980s. Many researchers have sought to explain this development in terms of "mismatch," arguing that the economies that have suffered most from persistently high unemployment are those that have been least flexible in matching their unemployed with the available employment opportunities. This conference proceedings volume examines the evidence on sectoral wage differentials, labor mobility and the ratio of unemployment to job vacancies in detailed studies of seven countries with a wide variety of labor market and macroeconomic structures: the United States, Japan, West Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain.

Book of Hate.......2007-01-06
Seems to me this book was all about hating President Bush and had very little logic to back up where the author was trying to take the reader. If someone wants to talk about economics and investing and politics, just be reasonable, logical and use sound facts. This writer seems nutty.
Largely a waste of time........2004-10-10
Mr. Mandeville spends most of the book lambasting New Wave Jingoism, Republicans, and faux-centrist Democrats for creating the circumstance that will result in an economic collapse. I will not argue the propects for a serious "adjustmnet," as I agree things look pretty grim for a number of reasons. However, I am mystified as to why he spends so much effort finding blame, while at the same time concluding it's all preordained by prophet Edgar Cayce and sun spots. If things are going to happen anyway, what's the sense in placing blame? By his reasoning, the Pope and all the Saints could have been in charge of the country, and Mr. Mandeville's vision of the future would be fixed on the same course.
Some of his discourse on money and markets was interesting, but he failed to make a strong connection between pending currency tourmoil and the universal reign of fiat money, and legal tender laws. He does rightly warn against a falling dollar, thinking international markets will merely shift in favor of trading oil and other commodities with some other paper money, ala the euro. Perhpas for this reason, he counsels against investing in precious metals, particualy silver, on the basis that these can be easily produced. He is missing the fact that economic growth now underway in India and China is underpinning a boom in commodities such than producers can not keep pace. Further, as with the rising price of oil, the values of commodities do not move is isolation one from the one. One effects the others, because commodities, particularly precious metals, are the only forms of real money. Consider that supplies of many raw materials are running at critically low levels across the globe. Despite Mr. Mandeville's observation to the contrary, new mines and new sources of metals (and oil, too) can not be brought into the supply line overnight. It takes years.
Then, again, maybe I'm just not reading the sun spots appropriately.

Mapping for Stonewall: The Civil War Service of Jed Hotchkiss
ASIN: 0870742701 |
Customer Reviews:
While repetitive, does give a feel for Jackson, Confederacy.......2007-07-27
All diary type memoirs are repetitive and during those times writers were loathe to criticize fellow officers but in this book you can definitely tell that the writer thought Early was beyond his depth, that Ewell was lazy and that Jackson was hopeless without accurate maps. His comments on price inflation, desertions and politics are interesting. There are some other tidbits like the fact that Lee told him that the Union would have fewer troops in 1864! You really feel the loss of Jackson and other good officers and how morale had sunk to an almost nonexistent level by 1865.
Startlingly unhelpful source.......2001-11-16
I expected this to be an excellent primary source, full of information on General Jackson, his campaigns and his "foot cavalry", as well as the exploits of the Second Corps after Jackson's death. In addition, I hoped to find some interesting description of map-making during the war. I was quite disappointed. Hotchkiss' memoir is made up of diary entries with an occasional note added later. And they mostly concern the weather, troop movements, and where he slept that night. They are almost devoid of description, emotion, and overall detail. Though Hotchkiss does mention making maps, of course, it's in brief statements like "Reduced Charlottesville today". His account of Jackson's death reads rather like "Jackson died. Fine clear day." It's hard to say whether this dullness represents something about Hotchkiss' personality (unemotional engineer, perhaps?) or is simply a function of the way he wrote his diary. In any case, though scholars of the period will want to glance at this, I found it not very useful and utterly unentertaining.
a good book.......2000-05-23
i really liked this book cause it was cool and i like historical books cause theyre intersting.the end.
