        Book Description

Can businesses collaborate with nonprofit organizations? Drawing lessons from 24 cases of cross-sector partnerships spanning the hemisphere, Social Partnering in Latin America analyzes how businesses and nonprofits are creating partnerships to move beyond traditional corporate philanthropy. An American supermarket and a Mexican food bank, an Argentine newspaper and a solidarity network, and a Chilean pharmacy chain and an elder care home are just a few examples of how businesses are partnering with community organizations in powerful ways throughout Latin America. The authors analyze why and how such social partnering occurs. The book provides a compelling framework for understanding cross-sector collaborations and identifying motivations for partnering and key levers that maximize value creation for participants and society.

          Book Description

Since 1985, the process of European unification has accelerated. Physical, technical, and fiscal barriers that separate the 12 countries are being removed, creating the largest mass market in the world. However, the market is not a homogeneous one. Cultural differences still exist; language barriers remain. If there is a Euro-retailer it will be a Euro-retailer that communicates in many languages, anticipates the unique tastes of countless cultures, and maximizes the economies of scale in production to offer the most attractive and unique merchandise at competitive price points. Distribution logistics within each country are presented along with case studies of major retailers. Internationalization strategies and strategic alliances of retail companies are analyzed. The return of German retailers to the former GDR and distribution opportunities within Eastern Europe are highlighted. Extensive use of on-line financial reports produced by major security offices provide the most current information about this dynamic industry.

            Book Description

Prolific munitions production keyed America's triumph in World War II but so did the complex economic controls needed to sustain that production. Artillery, tanks, planes, ships, trucks, and weaponry of every kind were constantly demanded by the military and readily supplied by American business. While that relationship was remarkably successful in helping the U.S. win the war, it also raised troubling issues about wartime economies that have never been fully resolved.

Focusing on the mobilization of national resources for a truly global war, Paul Koistinen analyzes all relevant aspects of the World War II economy from 1940 through 1945, describing the nation's struggle to establish effective control over industrial supply and military demand--and revealing the growing partnership between the corporate community and the armed services. Koistinen traces the evolution of federal agencies mobilizing for war--including the National Defense Advisory Commission, the Office of Production Management, and the Supply Priorities and Allocation Board--and then focuses on the work of the War Production Board from 1942-1945. As the war progressed, the WPB and related agencies oversaw the military's supply and procurement systems; stabilized the economy while financing the war; closely monitored labor relations; and controlled the shipping and rationing of fuel and food.

Koistinen reveals how representatives of industry and the armed services expanded upon their growing prewar ties to shape policies for harnessing the economy, and how federal agencies were subsequently riven with dissension as New Deal reformers and anti-New Deal corporate elements battled for control over mobilization itself. As the armed services emerged as the principal customers of a command economy, the military-industrial nexus consolidated its power and ultimately succeeded in bending the reformers to its will.

Koistinen shows that mobilization meant more than simply harnessing the economy for war--it also involved struggles for power and position among a great many interest groups and ideologies. He provides an ambitious and enormously insightful overview of the emergence of the military-industrial economy, one that still resonates today as America continues to wage wars around the globe.

              Book Description

If individuals cannot adequately be understood without reference to the family system, families themselves are comprehensible only in a broader social context. FAMILIES AND LARGER SYSTEMS is the first single-author book on families and larger systems designed specifically for the practicing therapist. It offers rich descriptions of the difficulties families and larger systems often pose for one another; presents a detailed assessment model for therapists; and provides a careful interviewing format as well as directions for designing creative interventions. Imber-Black offers a consultation model for dealing with families and larger systems who have become embroiled with one another, and methods for longer term work with those families who must engage with larger systems across significant portions of their life cycle, due to illness, handicaps, or poverty. Problems of labeling, stigma, and secrecy in families are addressed, and an entire chapter is devoted to women's issues in families and related systems. Utilizing numerous case illustrations and interview excerpts, Dr, Imber-Black first delineates the problems common to family-larger system situations, analyzing the origins of these interactions, the assessment model and interviewing methods used, and the design and implementation of intervention. In the second half of her book, she presents in-depth discussions of strategies for improving the relationship between families and related systems. Through concrete example and hands-on analysis, Imber-Black shows how the misconceptions, assumptions, and subsequent labeling of family functioning and family members give rise to stalemated situations. FAMILIES AND LARGER SYSTEMS provides a practical guide for all clinicians regardless of theoretical orientation. Therapists who wish to maintain a career in public sector settings, such as mental health clinics, hospitals, and schools, will find in this volume direction for effective work with families and the maintenance of good working relationships with colleagues. Therapists in private practice will discover that Imber-Black's model will aid their conceptualization of cases that have involved multiple therapists or other practitioners. Much of the material presented will also be useful to human services workers, both professional and paraprofessional, in welfare, child welfare, probation, drug counseling, schools and other institutions. The book's ecological viewpoint, which enables such professionals to see their own position in the system, also helps them to avoid the traps of replicating existing patterns, and to position themselves for therapeutic change. Finally, this book will be of interest to human service system administrators and program planners. The case examples offer a seldom seen view of the struggles families and multiple helpers can have with one another, while its theoretical models can be utilized to assess current inter-systematic functioning among larger systems in a community, with implications for program design and burn-out prevention.

4 out of 5 stars There's just one problem with this book..........2007-05-15

The author carves the entire bird including feet and branch out of just one piece of wood. Nice trick if you can find a piece of wood big enough! The photos and directions look great, but I would have appreciated it if I'd been given information on making bird feet and legs. A lot of bird carvers just order commercially cast pewter feet and legs, but if you want to enter your bird in competitions you need to make your own feet and legs. Most bird carvers use a combination of metal rods and plastic wood to have a structure strong enough to support the bird's body. Mr. Muehlmatt's chickadee has carved toes that do not support the body, but just blend into the tree branch. So, if you aren't working with a big hunk of wood that is large enough to include the wood branch you are out of luck for bird legs. I do think his chickadee is stunning and I'll use this book for his insight and information. I also like the clear and copious photos, I'm just disappointed that it is unlikely that I'll have chunk of wood big enough to make a bird relying solely on his directions.

This is a very readable book with many great photos of chickadees. Since I'm quite familiar with chickadees it didn't have a lot of information I wasn't already aware of, but there were a few tidbits that I found interesting. Being an aspiring bird photographer myself I did enjoy the photographs. Anyone who is a fan of the chickadee would enjoy this book.

                  4 out of 5 stars The black-capped chickadee.......2005-03-02

The black-capped chickadee is certainly one of the most beloved of birds; one of the more recognizeable passerines, it is readily found at backyards feeders during the winter, and its pleasant "chicka-dee-dee-dee" call is known to all who frequent wooded areas. It is only natural that this species should be the subject of one the first books in the Wild Bird Guides series. Filled with numerous excellent colour photographs, the text is somewhat sparse, usually consisting of 50 to 200 word captions to individual photos. Its 90 pages is somewhat less than other titles in the series. That's not to say that the text is not informative. It definitely provides one with an excellent understanding of the black-capped chickadee's lifecycle. Overall, a well written and informative book.

WILD BIRD GUIDES: BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE. By Susan M. Smith. 90 pages. Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 1997. ISBN 0-8117-2686-X (pbk).

Early this January, out of some obscure impulse, and although living in a fairly heavily built-up area, I decided to set up a birdbath and feeder in my miniscule garden. The feeder held a seed bar - sunflower seeds, mixed seeds, peanuts, oats; a fruit bar - banana, pear, apple, orange; and a 'calory' bar - honey water, and suet cake. It was an experiment. And it was wildly successful. My garden since has been filled with a constant stream of birds, both large and small, and their behavior provides a constant source of delight and interest.

Of the seven or so species which regularly show up, undoubtedly the most interesting is the Shijukara, Japan's near-relative to the Black-capped Chickadee. I was intrigued by the behavior of this distinctively marked tiny bird, with it's black cap and bib, which will boldly approach within a few feet of where I sit, grab a sunflower seed, fly off to a nearby branch, and then, while firmly holding the seed between its feet, noisily pound away at it with its beak to break it open. A desire to know more quickly led me to the present book by Susan M. Smith.

Smith, who is a member of the Department of Biological Sciences at Mount Holyoke University, tells us that "the chickadee's ability to use their feet in food manipulation is relatively unusual among perching birds" (p.43). Somewhat to my relief, she also assures us of the propriety of feeders since, with the ongoing destruction of habitat and foraging areas, feeders provide an essential source of food and water in winter, and the survival rates of birds is far higher in areas which have them. Her book, a brief popular treatment with a scientific flavor, offers a fascinating digest of what is currently known about this remarkable bird and includes chapters on Reproduction, Winter Flocks, Diet and Foraging, Social Behavior and Communication, Surviving the Cold of Winter, Population Ecology, Relations with Humans.

The book is well-printed on high quality glossy paper, stitched, bound in a sturdy wrapper, and is stunningly illustrated throughout with full-color photographs.
But although well-written and richly informative, and although the author's love and respect for the chickadee are certainly evident, there is a complete absence of personal anecdote. Readers might consider supplementing Smith's account with the following less 'scientific' but more warmly human and anecdote-filled book:

HAND-TAMING WILD BIRDS AT THE FEEDER. By Alfred G. Martin. 144 pages. Chambersburg, Pennsylvania: Alan C. Hood & Company, Inc., 1963 and reprinted. ISBN 0-911469-07-9 (pbk).

Both Smith's and Martin's wise observations about the chickadee are truly impressive, and no-one who is at all interested in birds will want to miss either of these
                  fascinating books.

                    Book Description

A frequent visitor at the backyard feeder, the Black-capped Chickadee is one of the most familiar and popular of birds. It is found in an unusually large geographic area--from coast to coast in the northern two-thirds of the United States and in much of Canada. This book is the first comprehensive synthesis of published information about this tiny, tough bird.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring story about the daily struggles of wild birds.......2006-01-22

From the title, I was concerned that this book would be a "Disneyfied" tale of a cute ball of fluff. Far from it! This book took me through an incredible journey into the spirit of a tiny, but mighty little warrior. Roher writes with a sense of deep respect for the intricate balance in the web of life and how we of the "two legged kind" often unknowingly disrupt it. I was humbled by the wisdom and courage of these wild creatures. We are often not aware of the life and death struggles going on right in our own backyards. I was humbled by the wisdom and courage of these wild creatures. An enlightening and wonderful read. I loved it!

                    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book!.......2005-02-26

I couldn't disagree more with the other reviewer. I've fed chickadees from my hand, so I was interested in reading this. It was hard to put down, it was such a beautifully written and interesting story. It's also important in that it teaches about how one's actions can affect the whole.
I was extremely touched by this book, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature.

1 out of 5 stars The title sums it up.......2004-08-30

Cluttered by New Age lunacy, cheerfully anti-scientific, full of assumptions and anthropomorphism, this book may go over well with the Hallmark duckies-and-bunnies crowd, but birders will find it all a bit hard to swallow. Although the author is obviously sincere, and often capable of close observation, "Mr. Picky" is just too heavy-laden with nineteenth-century sentimentality and moralizing to take seriously.

From the author: We observed an adult Gray Jay (Perisoreus canadensis) that had captured an adult Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, during winter. Aerial pursuit of small, adult birds and an instance of capture and predation of a juvenile bird by a Gray Jay have been reported previously. Here, we present the first documented case of capture of a seemingly uninjured, adult bird. Received 22 March 2004, accepted 12 October 2004.

From the author: Aggressive responses of Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) to heterospecific and conspecific vocalization playbacks were measured across a historic contact zone in east-central Illinois to determine the magnitude of interspecific aggression. Within the traditional Carolina Chickadee range, chickadees responded more aggressively towards Carolina Chickadee calls than Black-capped Chickadee calls. Within the traditional Black-capped Chickadee range, chickadees did not respond to either vocalization significantly more than the other. The aggressive response towards presumed heterospecific vocalizations for all chickadees was marginally more aggressive closer to the contact zone. Thus, we conclude that interspecific aggression may not act as a gap producing mechanism between chickadee ranges.

From the author: Male Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) sing for several minutes prior to dawn during the breeding season. In northeastern Colorado, dawn singing was associated with male-female interactions rather than male-male interactions: males did not approach one another during the chorus. Males sang until female arrival, at which point they attempted copulation. During copulation attempts, males always uttered strings of variable sees and nearly always attached gargles to these strings. All gargles terminated in an acoustically similar, low-pitched, buzzy syllable. Received 30 January 2004, accepted 3 August 2004.
