Customer Reviews:
A fun trip between the tombstones.......2007-08-22
I love cemeteries, the older the better, so I was already pretty much the ideal reader for 'Stones and Bones' from the get go. During my recent vacation to New England I spotted Rogak's book, in one of the approximate 20 or so gift shops my children dragged me into, and as soon as I saw the cover I knew I was hooked. I practically hurled my money at the cash register, as excited as I was to get my hands on this book.
I read the book everytime I had downtime over my trip. It proved to be a good book to dip in and out of. The short chapters are conducive to that. The content was definitely of interest to me, and there were some great, interesting tidbits as well as good local lore. For me, someone who's been to New England only once before, and never before to its cemeteries, it was interesting to read. I definitely wanted more concrete information, but I whiled away my quiet time very nicely with this book. The author's intent wasn't to be comprehensive, but rather to whet the appetite and provide a little guidance on the subject. I'd like to graduate to a more detailed book from here, but I thought 'Stones and Bones' served its purpose quite well.
Stones and Bones of New England: A guide to the unusual, historic, and otherwise notable Cemeteries.......2007-08-10
This book had promise, but it never lived up to it. It probably gives a comprehensive review of the cemeteries available for viewing and hints on where to park, but the actual cemetery information is scarce. Sometimes it will talk about a special monument and there is no picture. It left me wanting more.
Was hoping for more.......2006-06-05
This book begs for a road trip...by the author! A truly phenomenal book on this subject would have required more than just research. Visits to most every graveyard/cemetery in New England (anyone traveling through small New England towns can tell you that there is much more to see than those listed in the book), plus interviews with the locals and families that date back centuries, seems necessary.
Much of what is in the book seems to be simply research, which could be done by anyone on the internet and at local New England libraries. Each cemetery listed mentions only one or two graves of interest. Also, each state section of the book should have had its own introduction including some history of the state, as well as lore. And while this doesn't need to be a gothic novel featuring Barnabas and Quentin Collins, narrative on the meaning, legends, lore and FEEL of graveyards in New England could have added so much more, including color photos taken during all four seasons. I am reminded of a book on ghosts in New England (forgive me for not recalling the author or title); that author visited many towns and interviewed locals to "get the scoop." Whether you believe the legends or not, it was a great read because of the amount of information provided by locals.
Seems like a rush job. With more work, the book could have been an invaluable resource and historical reference.
Get directions first.......2005-10-09
Although this book is great for giving histories for graveyards and unusual individuals, beware. Get directions to these locations first. If you follow the book's directions, most times you will get lost for hours. Some of the roads in the book's directions do not even exist, others will lead you to an area miles away from the actual graveyard. It is my opinion that the author has not visited most of these locations, and is only speculating to their whereabouts.
A TOUR INTO NEW ENGLAND HISTORY.......2005-09-17
I've long been fascinated by the history of New England and the lore of old cemeteries. One of the best ways to learn about the history of a region is to visit these ancient graveyards. "Stones & Bones of New England" takes the reader on a wonderful tour of dozens of cemeteries located in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Each section has a state map showing the general location of the cemetery. More importantly, each cemetery that author Lisa Rogak covers comes with an address (or at least an exact location), phone number if applicable, and hours of operation. I've read a number of books on old cemeteries and this information is often not included.
Throughout this tour you'll visit cemeteries that are the final resting place of many famous Americans, some infamous Americans, along with suspected witches, not too mention than many of the sites are haunted.
In Connecticut, the Mountain Grove Cemetery is where you'll find the great showman P.T. Barnum buried. But even his 25' tall monument isn't the largest...that honor goes to one of Barnum's most famous attractions, the two foot tall Tomb Thumb who has a 40' obelisk. The Bara Hack Cemetery is not only a haunted cemetery, but is also located in a genuine, deserted ghost town.
Maine features the Brooklin Cemetery where children's author E.B. White is buried. The Old Burying Ground in York features the frequently visited gravef Mary Nasson, suspected of being a witch. A large stone slab covers the ground where she is buried, supposedly to prevent her escape.
As one might suspect, Massachusetts has some of the nation's oldest cemeteries and gravestones. The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is home to some of America's literary giants including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Louisa May Alcott. Oak Grove in Fall River is where you will find the grave of the infamous Lizzie Borden, who died in 1927. Many of the settlers who came over on the Mayflower are buried in Burial Hill in Plymouth. Burying Point in Salem is where the presiding judge in the Salem witch trials, Judge Hathorne, lies in his eternal sleep.
Rhode Island's Chestnuthill Baptist Church Cemetery features the grave of a suspected vampire. Mercy Brown had been the third member of the family to die within a short period of time. The two others were exhumed and found to be decomposing, but when Mercy was dug up, she was still perfectly preserved. Her family then removed her heart, burned it, and re-buried her. The Old Burying Ground in Little Compton contains the grave of Elisabeth Pabodie, the daughter of John and Priscilla Alden, and the first white female born in New England. Perhaps New England's most favorite resident, certainly to horror fans, H.P. Lovecraft, is buried in Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
On the lighter side, if you go to Vermont, be sure to visit Ben & Jerry's Flavor Graveyard, where the famous ice cream makers have erected tombstones to all of their discontinued flavors with some very humorous epitaphs.
If there is one minor complaint it is that there are, at most, just one photograph to accompany each cemetery listing and some do not have any. More photos would have been greatly appreciated. Still, it's a fantastic book for those who appreciate the history and lore of old cemeteries. You literally find yourself stepping back into history as you visit the graves of famous Americans who fought in the Revolutionary War like Ethan Allen. The book also has an excellent resource section for further study. A great book!

Book Description

Resilience Thinking: Sustaining Ecosystems and People in a Changing World
ASIN: 1853834726 |
Book Description
* Major new textbook on the geography of sustainable development
* Collaborative effort from one of the UK's leading geography departments
* Ideal for undergraduates in geography, environmental science and social science
Sustainable development is the new mantra, but what does it mean on the ground in how people relate to the physical environment and across landscapes? This book offers fresh insights into sustainable development by looking at it from a range of geographical perspectives. Building on existing theory, it demonstrates geography's unique contribution to the study of human-environment relationships, and examines sustainability at the full range of spatial scales from the global to the local. Both theory and practice are discussed as the book explores sustainable development in urban and rural areas, in both developing and developed countries. The contributors suggest that the future path of sustainability is ours to forge if we make the choice and take action.
Book Description
The Reagan and Thatcher "revolutions." The collapse of
Eastern Europe dramatically captured in the tearing down of
the Berlin Wall. F. A. Hayek, "grand old man of capitalism"
and founder of the classical liberal, free-market revival
which ignited and inspired these world events, forcefully
predicted their occurrence in writings such as The Road to
Serfdom, first published in 1944.
Hayek's well-known social and political philosophy—in
particular his long-held pessimistic view of the prospects of
socialism, irrefutably vindicated by the recent collapse of
the Eastern bloc—is fully grounded in the Austrian approach
to economics. In this new collection, Hayek traces his
intellectual roots to the Austrian school, the century-old
tradition founded at the University of Vienna by Carl Menger,
and links it to the modern rebirth of classical liberal or
libertarian thought.
As Hayek reminds us, the cornerstone of modern
economics—the theory of value and price—"represents a
consistent continuation of the fundamental principles handed
down by the Vienna school." Here, in this first modern
collection of essays on the Austrian school by one of its
preeminent figures, is the genesis of this tradition and its
place in intellectual history.
Reflections on Hayek's days as a young economic theorist
in Vienna, his opening address to the inaugural meeting of
the Mont Pèlerin Society, and essays on former teachers
and other leading figures in the Austrian school are included
in volume 4. Two hitherto unavailable memoirs, "The
Economics of the 1920s as Seen from Vienna," published here
for the first time, and "The Rediscovery of Freedom: Personal
Recollections," available for the first time in English,
make this collection invaluable for Hayek scholars.
Hayek's writings continue to provide an invaluable
education in a subject which is nothing less than the
development of the modern world.
F. A. Hayek, awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in
1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory and the principal
proponent of the libertarian philosophy. Hayek was the author
of numerous books and was professor emeritus at the University
of Freiburg and the University of Chicago.

Book Description
In Amazonia: Territorial Struggles on Perennial Frontiers, Paul Little chronicles centuries of territorial disputes in Amazonia. Examining a wide variety of social groups from an environmental and anthropological perspective, Little describes the factors that have created two unique biophysical and political environments at opposite ends of the Amazon River basin's rain forest.
Little makes a comparative study of the Aguarico region in eastern Ecuador (at the western upper edge of the rain forest) and the Jari region of Brazil (at its eastern lowland end) using four time frames to examine early European invasions of indigenous homelands, fortune-building attempts in Amazonia, conservation concerns in the tropical ecosystems; and disputes over territorial claims that arose during the 1990s. By interweaving his examination between the two regions within each time frame, Little effectively highlights how similar globalizing forces were locally appropriated to produce widely divergent environmental and political histories.
A large part of the study is given to the period beginning in the 1950s. Little outlines the contemporary struggles -- social, political, economic, and ecological -- arising in Amazonia. He also examines the frontier processes of ethnocide and ethnogenesis whereby the indigenous communities of the upper Amazon have retained some control over their lands, while in the lower Amazon traditional riverine communities strive for existence against increasing industrialization.
Thoroughly researched and examining issues ranging from resource exploitation and conservation to colonization, urbanization, and industrialization, Amazonia will appeal to students and scholars in environmental studies, geography, ecology and conservation, cultural anthropology, and Latin American studies and history as well as anyone interested in Amazonia.

Customer Reviews:
THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN JAPAN SAID BUY IT, SO I DID.......2004-02-02
...and I was not disappointed. I have PTSD myself from an auto accident and I know what these authors are talking about. Having just heard of Greg Steckler, I thought I'd give it a try. I would never think of leaving home without this book in my luggage. In these times, there is no other book. This man is patient, kind and thoughtful and teaches you how to be that way with your child. No one thinks better about children than Greg Steckler. I just wish he'd written more. Maybe he will. If you know him, call him and ask him to. The answers he provides in this book for dealing with trajedy that seems uncontrollable and creates a scary world, much scarier than the one we were raised in, requires that this book be read by every parent. The US State Department was absolutely correct when they made this one of only a relatively few books with an unqualified recommendation. It is superb in its writing and infromation. Let Greg teach you how to help your child through these trying times that don't look like they're getting much better soon!
Perfect book during these times of crisis.......2002-04-25
This book has been especially helpful during these times of crisis. It has been very helpful in getting my daughter to make sense of the tragedy and put it all in perspective. Thank you.
I never thought I would need this kind of book........1999-03-05
I did not think that anyone wrote on this subject, so when I saw it on Amazon after our last storms I was quite relieved to have some guidance in adjusting my kids to the realities of nature. I can tell that the authors must have had hands on experience in disaster relief by reading some of their advice. It's real "hands on" kind of advice. Very useful.

Customer Reviews:
A must for the individual interested in Civil War reenacting.......2007-03-05
Definately a must have handbook for anyone who wants to recreate the sense of the 1860s. Excellent basic information on most aspects of the reenacting hobby. With costs exceeding $1200 to take the field in correct uniform, this is money well spent!
Great Book.......2006-07-14
This is a great Book for any one interested in the American civil war and who wants to be a Reenactor.
From a reenactors point.......2006-06-07
I have reenacted for the best part of 2 decades and presented or participated in countless living history events prior to buying this book, so I was very surprised & pleased when I discovered a reference of such value for both the new recruits AND seasoned veterans. I now consider this a "Must Have" for all new members of our unit. Simple to read & understand, Valid facts, and a very good source of information. You will make it part of 'always carry' gear if you do reenact or part of your library if you don't...
Good, if not a bit dated.......2005-04-26
I first encountered this book as I was beginning my four years as a private in the re-activated 34th Georgia, Co B from Canton, GA. At the time it was the best thing (or so I thought) that was available for the newbie. Not to say it isn't a good starting point, but it's getting a bit dated now.
The price list is WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY off. Muskets can still be had for around $450 new (Used muskets vary in price, but also in quality), but expect to spend a bit more than is suggested for your first uniform and accoutrements. If I recall the estimate correctly in this manual, the price for an entire kit (uniform, period correct hat, musket, accoutrements, brogans, etc) was around $900. You can still outfit for that, if you are frugal, able to make your own clothing (I used to save a bundle by having women sew for me. Jean-cloth was fairly inexpensive a few years ago!), and have contacts that are willing to cut you big deals.
The rest of the book is a bit basic. On one hand the author talks of being aware of one's outfit and not looking FARBY (that is, goofy). On the other hand he embraces being farby and allowing modern conveniences in the camp, so long as the general public is not aware. This can be confusing to the newbie (it was to me).
The sections on proper drilling and manual of arms are well done and presented in a manner much easier to comprehend than HARDY'S.
I only wish the sections on cost and suttlers would be updated to include some newer vendors.
So, fresh-fish, you can do a lot worse than this book.
An excellent how-to.......2004-08-13
Mr. Hadden gives an excellent overview of reenacting and where to begin, what to buy, where to get it - it's all here. Also interesting for students of the period.
