Book Description

A complete overview of the work of the most important architect in the Middle East today.

Rasem Badran's influence is rapidly spreading throughout the developing world. His work involves the full spectrum of the built environment, from urban planning to individual residences. He concentrates on making architecture that meets the social and cultural requirements of the people who use it, as well as being place-specific in response to environmental conditions. Born in Jerusalem in 1945, Badran was educated in Ramallah and then in Germany, which had a profound impact on his approach to design. His well-balanced education, beginning with a traveling apprenticeship with his father and continuing through a fertile and exciting time of experimental architecture in Europe, has allowed him to weave a systematically rational, Western methodology with the intuitive traditions inherent in his own cultural background.

Badran designs buildings and environments that stand in stark contrast to self-conscious, anonymous architecture devoid of any reference to people, place, or culture. He offers a humane option to the deliberately commodified, blatantly branded, aesthetically objectified, and environmentally inarticulate architecture that is becoming the norm in the developed world today. 300 illustrations, 250 in color.

Review by Besim S. Hakim

This book by James Steele on the work of architect Rasem Badran of Jordan is a wonderful contribution to architectural literature and a valuable documentation of the work of one of the most talented Arab architects of the current period. I know both the author and the architect, and it is indeed a pleasure to see the hard work of James Steele, over many years, brought to fruition.
What are most refreshing in this book are not only the photos and discussion of Badran's built projects but the unique style of his sketches that were used to establish the design concepts and their subsequent development. The sketches are reproduced in their original color and some can be classified as works of art in their own right.
The book starts with an introduction, followed by seven chapters, a chronology of Badran's work, notes, bibliography, a glossary of terms, and an index. The chapter titles sequentially are: 1. A narrative on people, place and culture, 2. Creative heritage and the return to the east, 3. Houses and housing, 4. The fourth dimension is the spirit, 5. Preserving a living history, 6. An earthly paradise, 7. Rediscovering the Islamic city.
Chapter two is a testament to how important it is to understand one's background, such as Badran's, in shaping his views and outlook on how he uses his skills in forging forward with an architecture that is an important contribution to his region and the world at large.
It is only by a careful reading of this book and examining its illustrations, that one can truly appreciate Badran's distinctive design process and the sensitivity of his architecture. Issues regarding the theoretical implications of Badran's architecture is beyond the scope of this review and might be gleaned from Steele's analysis and interpretations.

    Book Description

This is the quintessential guide to the work of American artist Prentiss Taylor.

Throughout his artistic career, lithographer Prentiss Taylor found his subject matter in the broadest spectrum. Many of his lithographs are autobiographical; reflecting his loves, interests, concerns, background, and hopes. Many of them also reflect Taylor's interest and engagement in the cultural panoply of American history and culture and his profound insight into mankind's capacity for good and evil, its talents to create through architecture, industry, music and religion, and its ability to destroy through war, prejudices, and injustice.

Taylor began his study of lithography in 1931 at the Art Students League in New York City. "With the first magic feeling of the crayon working in the fine grain of stone, I knew I was at home in lithography," the artist was to later write. Taylor's first lithograph was "Negro Head," composed in 1931. His last composition was "Church at Trampass," composed in 1983. In his 52 years as a lithographer, Taylor created 137 lithographs - many of which follow the parameters of realism. Taylor was involved in and influenced by the Harlem Renaissance and collaborated with Langston Hughes, illustrating the poet's volume: The Scottsboro Poems. Taylor also traveled extensively, particularly in the American Southwest and Mexico, whose landscapes and culture heavily flavor and influence his perspective.

This splendid catalogue raisonne of Taylor's lithographs is an important contribution to the growing body of resource materials documenting the history of America's graphic arts and artists of the twentieth century. Along with a selection of 142 lithographs by the artist, are six essays discussing the artist's life and work, a chronology, list of public collections and exhibitions, and bibliography.

The Global Water Partnership notes that the crisis in the water sector is a crisis of governance. The same is true for environmental management. Water management is an integral part of ecosystem governance and is closely linked to the sustainable development discourse. This book unpacks the core elements of governance, with a specific focus on water and analyses the linkages between key variables in an effort to increase our understanding of what makes governance good. It is a necessary read for any environmental/water resource professional tasked with the responsibility of implementing Integrated Environmental and Water Resource Management and Sustainable Development.

          Book Description

In the latter part of the 20th century, humans are doing a particularly poor job of managing natural resources in a sustainable way over the long term. Institutions, Ecosystems, and Sustainability focuses on long-term, sustainable natural resource management practices at the local, national, and international levels. The authors suggest that a major cause of the "sustainability problem" - regulatory policies for large areas that often threaten the sustainability of both natural resources and previously effective governance problems - lie in "scale" problems. Large scale ecosystems are not simply larger versions of smaller systems, and micro-scale ecosystems are not merely microcosms of large scale systems. The driving forces and feedback mechanisms operate at different levels and exhibit distinct patterns of their own. Traditional management practices that do well at the local level cannot be expected to do equally well in handling activities organized at the continental or global scale. Even more importantly, when local systems are superseded by national or international management practices, local ecosystems frequently suffer. The challenge is to match ecosystems and governance systems in ways that maximize the compatibility of these systems. This book builds upon this fundamental principle. Particularly valuable is the use of simulation exercises to explore the consequences of social institutions and a discussion of the progress being made in developing a broad global data base to test hypothesis about the relationship between ecosystems and social institutions, and to investigate ways to repair the damage already caused by scale mismatches. Book Description

This textbook for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Evolutionary Game Theory covers recent developments in the field, with an emphasis on economic contexts and applications. It begind with the basic ideas as they originated within the field of theoretical biology and then proceeds to the formulation of a theoretical framework that is suitable for the study of social and economic phenomena from an evolutionary perspective. Core topics include the Evolutionary Stable Strategy (EES) and Replicator Dynamics (RD), deterministic dynamic models, and stochastic perturbations. A set of short appendices presents some of the technical material referred to in the main text. Evolutionary theory is widely viewed as one of the most promising appraoches to understanding bounded rationality, learning, and change in complex social environments. New avenues of research are suggested by Vega-Redondo, and plentiful examples illustrate the theory's potential applications. The recent boom experienced by this discipline makes the book's systematic presentation of its essential contributions vital reading for any newcomer to the field.

Business @ the Speed of Stupid is Dan Burke and Alan Morrison's plainspoken prescription for healing the disorders that inevitably develop when unprepared executives rush headlong into high-tech projects. Geared to those reeling from today's techno-shakeout, it starts with 10 troubled corporate scenarios that are colorfully illustrated by anonymous examples drawn from the pair's consultancy practice. In the book's first part, they use them to identify complications that arise when a perceived need for speed gets in the way of serious preparation--such as those stemming from an ill-advised push to launch a flashy new Web site, integrate existing software from numerous departments into a single system, dive wholeheartedly into e-commerce, develop an intranet--and then offer an assessment of the missteps, along with suggestions for avoiding them. ("Never underestimate the difficulty of managing the conflicts between artists and engineers," they write in a chapter called "Mars And Venus." "Both are necessary but solve different problems. You must know which problems are the most important to solve if you are to create the proper team mix and resulting authority structure.") In the second part, they describe tackling the overall problem with their Executive Thought Framework, designed to foster "appropriate and targeted" technology decisions. --Howard Rothman

                                  Book Description

The business landscape today is littered with the remains of thousands of technology ventures. One could easily conclude that many of them are dying because of a lack of funds or a shortage of business opportunities. But what really lies at the root of their demise is a techno-centric disregard for strategy and general management principles.

In a time when the latest technological breakthroughs offer limitless possibilities for business application, very few executives understand how to successfully use these technologies for tangible business results. Business @ the Speed of Stupid offers a wry look at the corporate practices that have caused many executives to be blindsided in their rush to live on the cutting-edge of technology. Burke and Morrison bring to light many of the myths that stymie unwary investors, entrepreneurs, and managers who are seeking to turn a quick profit. They highlight why smart entrepreneurs buy into dim-witted business beliefs and expose the false assumptions about technology that have crippled so many companies.

In the pages of Business @ the Speed of Stupid you will encounter technocrats who confuse a new product with a new business and marketing vice-presidents who launch expensive web sites that don't serve their customers. With ultimate know-how, verve and humor, the authors reveal why brilliant engineers don't always make brilliant business leaders and vice-versa, and how the tendency to innovate should never come at the expense of customers and investors. Following these stories, the authors identify the primary cause of the mistakes and failures and then go on to showcase a framework that will enable you to avoid the blunders they reveal. Bringing forth realism and experience to counteract the lingering technology hype, Business @ the Speed of Stupid will help you think strategically about how to employ technology in your business, positioning you to survive and profit in the next phase of the digital economy.

5 out of 5 stars Still Relivant in 2005.......2006-05-05

This book was written in the shadow of the 2000 Internet bust. So, why write a review in 2005? My answer, memories are short. As the economy continues to expand people will again become courageous and begin to try new technologies. Much of it will turn out great, but a lot is bound to be the same stupid mistakes made half a decade ago. . .

You may think that because you are in a non-internet company, you are safe. Two words: you're not. Technology is already integrated in every business-even the mom-and-pop outfits depend on it. To remain competitive requires increasingly skillful use of technology. In 2000, the technology experts bombed. In 2005 it's everyone's turn.

This book is a great way to jump-start your move towards making good technology choices--by examining bad ones. The teaching method employed in this book is to tell stories, then explain what went wrong. Most chapters are organized along those lines and stand quite well by themselves. Thus, it's easy to simply read a chapter, set the book down for a few days and pick it up for another chapter. (I like books that cater to a busy schedule!) As such it's easy to read and the narrative format brings the drier aspects analyzing business technology to life. Currently I see that it's selling used-with shipping for under $5! I'll give that 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars A comedy and tragedy in every chapter!.......2002-04-09

                                  To Dan & Alan.
I wanted to thank you for writing such a good book. Now I understand that I am not the only techie who has to experience these frustrations, and that makes me feel a little better, but I will feel even better when I have implemented the teachings in the second half of the book.

I loved the title! The title of the book caught my eye, because I had heard about a book titled "business at the speed of light(?)", and being a bit of a rebel, I laughed when I read the title and thought "that's the truth". After a few scans of various pages, I wanted to buy it. And I am not disappointed yet.
I would not feel stupid telling someone to read this book based on it's title, and if you do, then you may need to get out the environment you are currently in. Everyone needs to lighten up a lot. That theme is illustrated several times in this book.

Dan & Alan, please send me an email when your site is revised (ExecuThought.com), I would like to find other tech people to converse with about your thoughts and lessons in this book, and I think your online dicussion board would be an excellent place to do it.

Again thanks for the book, I haven't enjoyed reading a "business" book like this since reading the "E-myth revisited". Each chapter is a comedy, adventure and tragedy wrapped in a valuable lesson.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2002-03-03

Although most of this book consists of scenarios where you say "well of course...", they are excellent, focused examples of the points made. I wish the title were different; I can't imaging handing this to someone and saying "here, you should read this". But most IT people should!
                                  Great book, easy to read.

After our 5 month old kept waking up every 2 hours- I lost it. I ordered the book and after 3 nights he was sleeping 12+ hours at night. Of course I was still up every two hours to see if he was alive. We used it for my daughter at one month and it WORKED. Now we have a 1 and 5 year old with awesome sleeping habits and lots of Mommy Daddy time after 8:30pm- :)

I was a tired parent with a four month old baby, who'd only slept a maximum of 4 hours at a time, and I was convinced he needed feeding at night until I read this book.
I recommend reading earlier than I did as it has saved my sanity!
It's a lovely book as it reassures you, while pointing out common errors that prevent your baby sleeping.
Despite not really believing at first that a book could help-after following the advice,my baby improved within about a week.
                                  Definitely recommended.

I like this book because it's simple to read, and most of all - it makes sense! It's purpose is to make parents take their cues from the children by watching out for the "Core Night" This is when baby sleeps for a block of time longer than he ever has before at night. My son was two months old when he had his first "Core Night" which confirmed what the authurs said. However, it doesn't clearly address the issue of what to do when baby wakes and seems to REALLY want to be fed during his "Core Night.

In this text Beatrice Hollyer and Lucy Smith outline a very simple, easy to follow approach to help your child sleep through the night. A parent, though well intentioned, can easily promote habits that prevent a child from sleeping. This book tells you what to avoid doing, and what you should do to assist your child in finding their natural sleep patterns. Compared to other sleep books which do not focus on the ability to naturally promote sleep from the earliest days, this book helps you as a parent to recognize cues from your child that he or she is ready to sleep for longer periods. The cues come from the child and as a parent you look for evidence of their first 'core night' - a block of sleep when the child sleeps longer than in the past. The focus of the book is on sleep, but its advice spills into many aspects of infant care including feeding. For example, the author's illustrate how important it is to recognize an infant's hunger cry and to stop night feeds when they are no longer required. On a personal note, my husband and I purchased this book while I was pregnant and read it long before my due date. Our baby slept through the night for the first time when he was 28 days old. Following the book's recommendations was difficult at first and I strayed from their advice exactly five times over the next month - each time realizing that the author's were correct. It is important that both parents be using the same approach to ensure the child is not receiving mixed signals at this time - which was difficult for me only initially. By the end of two months every night was a good night. Our son is an excellent sleeper and he is happy and content during the day. We could have done several things to thwart what he was naturally ready to do, but happily we had read this book and helped him instead. This is a great approach to helping your baby sleep that (most importantly to me) does not require crying. Both my husband and I cannot recommend this book enough. I am buying it for my sister and her new baby because I refuse to let my copy out of the house!

Lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred photographs, this book is an invaluable reference for collectors, curators, and students of militaria and of the colorful frontier era.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better.......2007-10-11

Doug McChristian was the Chief Historian at the Little Bighorn National Monument (formerly the Custer Battlefield) when this excellent book was published in 1995. He had access to the museum there including the countless bits and pieces of equipment that soldiers typically carried to Custer's Last Stand.

This is required reading for students of the Custer Fight or anybody interested in the Frontier Army after the Civil War, and before the Spanish American War. McChristian's book is an encyclopedia of what Custer's troopers (and other soldiers of that era) wore, carried and even what they thought.

McChristian goes beyond compiling a copiously illustrated encyclopedia. He discerns such crucial, nuanced themes as the connection between equipment and morale and documents it with careful, objective research. He annotates his work thoroughly and extensively and adds a great bibliography.

This is one of the best reference books you can have if you're interested in the Army of Custer's period. I gave it five stars. It just doesn't get any better.

5 out of 5 stars Attract history buffs, military readers and collectors alike.......2006-09-24

This isn't just another general survey, but a detailed inspection of the development of army uniforms, equipment and small arms during the Indian campaigns in the West. As such, it will attract history buffs, military readers and collectors alike, pairing over two hundred photos with historical background on the frontier era. THE U.S. ARMY IN THE WEST, 1870-1880 comes from a retired research historian for the National Park Service, and could've been featured in our 'Collector's Shelf' area, but is featured here for its added attraction to any military history buff with an affection for early Western events.

5 out of 5 stars McChristian's Indian War US Army Equipment & Uniforms.......2001-03-27

What has and will be for sometime to come..the quintessential work on the US Armys equipment and uniforms of its late Indian War era...McChristian's volume is loaded with excellent photos and text...detailing weapons, clothing, leather gear, and personal items..that the Regular Army soldier used to sustain his existance at a time when military spending was frugal to say the least ..in a post-Civil War political atmosphere. Although this book was written with an eye towards the history of that time ..it really is geared towards collectors and amateur historians. Custer fans...and collectors of Indian War artifacts..be advised this is a necessary book for your shelf, if you really want to experience what life on the plains was like for the grunt soldier. The thin line between you and your haversack, overcoat, and rifle..represented the daily struggle between life or death. McChristian's research is flawless...and well documented. My only wish for this book was that it might have had color photos..(instead of black & white)..of original artifacts from known collections..such as many of the newer WW2 collector research books, that have shown up of late. Maybe..next time out...for the volume covering 1880 thru 1900..if such is being worked on..??!!

                                        Book Description

Grub Street was a real place, a place of poverty and vice. It was also a metaphor for journalists and other writers of ephemeral publications and, by implication, the infant newspaper industry. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, journalists were held in low regard, even by their fellow journalists who exchanged torrents of mutual abuse in the pages of their newspapers. But Grub Street's vitality and its battles with authority laid the foundations of modern Fleet Street.

In this book, Bob Clarke examines the origanization and development of the English newspaper from its early origin in the broadsides of the sixteenth century, through the burgeoning of the press during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to its arrival as a respectable part of the establishment in the nineteenth century. Along the way this narrative is illuminated with stories of the characters who contributed to the growth of the English press in all its rich variety of forms, and how newspapers tailored their contents to particular audiences.

As well as providing a detailed chronological history, the volume focuses on specific themes important to the development of the English newspaper. These include such issues as state censorship and struggles for the freedom of the press, the growth of advertising and its effect on editorial policy, the impact on editorial strategies of taxation policy, increased literacy rates and social changes, the rise of provincial newspapers and the birth of the Sunday paper and the popular press. The book also describes the content of newspapers, and includes numerous extracts and illustrations that vividly portray the way in which news was reported to provide a colourful picture of the social history of their times.

Written in a lively and engaging manner, this volume will prove invaluable to anyone with an interest in English social history, print culture or journalism.
