Book Description

Can architecture help us find our place and way in today's complex world? Can it return individuals to a whole, to a world, to a community? Developing Giedion's claim that contemporary architecture's main task is to interpret a way of life valid for our time, philosopher Karsten Harries answers that architecture should serve a common ethos. But if architecture is to meet that task, it first has to free itself from the dominant formalist approach, and get beyond the notion that its purpose is to produce endless variations of the decorated shed.

In a series of cogent and balanced arguments, Harries questions the premises on which architects and theorists have long relied--premises which have contributed to architecture's current identity crisis and marginalization. He first criticizes the aesthetic approach, focusing on the problems of decoration and ornament. He then turns to the language of architecture. If the main task of architecture is indeed interpretation, in just what sense can it be said to speak, and what should it be speaking about? Expanding upon suggestions made by Martin Heidegger, Harries also considers the relationship of building to the idea and meaning of dwelling. Architecture, Harries observes, has a responsibility to community; but its ethical function is inevitably also political. He concludes by examining these seemingly paradoxical functions.

5 out of 5 stars A rare thoughtful consideration of architectural meaning.......2005-08-22

Harries, a professor of philosophy at Yale, has a long-standing interest in architecture. (Disclosure- I took his course on the Philosophy of Architecture while a grad student in the early 80's.) Himself a student of Heidegger, Harries's work in architecture has largely been a reassessment and continuation of Heidegger's thought on technology and dwelling. The book under review is a summary of Harries's thinking on architecture. The "ethical function" referred to in the title concerns architecture's ability to express the ethos of the society that produces it. Harries effectively demolishes the esthetic and functional approaches to architecture and makes a convincing argument that what distinguishes architecture from mere building is its ethical function.

5 out of 5 stars A clear and profoundly illuminating meditation on art.......2004-04-03

.
This is simply one of the best books I have ever read.

On one level it is a critique of contemporary thinking about architecture. In the first part of the book Harries argues that the aesthetic approach to art doesn't do justice to the meaning and power of architecture. In the second part he argues that the semiotic approach to architecture is based on a model of language that cannot fully grasp and illuminate the symbolic dimension of architecture. In the third and fourth parts Harries tries to show that questions of architecture are ultimately questions of dwelling (broadly conceived), that questions of dwelling are irreducibly ethical and political, and that architecture thus has an irreducible ethical and political function.

On a deeper level the book is a critique of modern philosophies of art. Harries follows thinkers such as Heidegger, Gadamer, and Agamben in criticizing the aesthetic approach to art (which regards artworks simply as beautiful or interesting objects) and theoretical approaches to art (which regard artworks as the expression or illustration of ideas that can best be grasped and articulated with philosophical concepts). Harries argues that artworks have the power to illuminate the world and to call us back to what really matters, and that art is a (nontheoretical) way of responding to basic questions of human existence (How should we live? What does it mean to be human?)

Unlike Heidegger, Gadamer, and Agamben, however, Harries develops his arguments with a great number of specific, concrete examples drawn from the whole history of Western architecture and art. So while the book is philosophically ambitious, it is also exceptionally clear, sober, and down to earth.

Finally, I should note that the writing itself is beautiful--it is simple, precise, and conveys a sense of deep concentration and wonder.

The Ethical Function of Architecture won the American Institute of Architects 8th Annual International Architecture Book Award for Criticism. But it is about more than architecture. I recommend it very, very highly to anyone interested in Heidegger, phenomenology, aesthetics, ethics, poetry, literary theory, modernity and modernism, and the history and philosophy of art.

        Book Description

        Michael Raedecker The Show

Like many, if not most painters of his generation, Michael Raedecker is a scavenger of images as indebted to modern cinema, advertising and print-media as he is to the rich history of European painting to which he, a Dutchman, is an obvious heir. This heritage, however, has grown in importance over the years as he engages with an expanding list of traditional genres: landscape, interior, still life, vanitas painting, even modernist abstraction. The point of departure for any given work is usually a detail from a catalogue, filmstill or magazine, which he then refines in the form of a sketch, and this becomes the blueprint from which a painting is patiently elaborated. The frequently ephemeral nature of the source material contrasts with the invariably time-consuming nature of the picture-making process, a unique combination of painting and embroidery in which pictorial illusionism is constantly undermined by the insistent physicality and contrapuntal play of roughly sluiced paint and painstakingly threaded yarn. Recreating this found imagery in the medium of embroidery and painting, Michael Raedecker deliberately avoids any hint as to the epoch and content of his motifs. Thus he imparts to his works an aura of surreal timelessness. Doing so his paintings become archetypes, pregnant with allusions to the surface on which the history of the genres is projected. The catalogue has been published on the occasion of the exhibition: Michael Raedecker - The Show at Hauser & Wirth, London, June 4 - July 23, 2005 With a conversation between Alison M. Gingeras and Michael Raedecker and an essay by Caoihmin Mac Goilla Leith. Hardcover 56 pages, 17 color and 7 b/w illustrations 9.4 x 11 in. (23.8 x 27.8 cm)

Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (AKA Bureau Amsterdam) is project space of the world-renowned Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition area, a former clothing workshop, is located in the city center amidst many contemporary art galleries. Since 1993, Bureau Amsterdam has organized exhibitions of Amsterdam-based art in an international context, with an emphasis on new trends and an openness to many forms of media. Exchanges with foreign art organizations, lecture evenings by leading theorists, critics, and artists, and exhibition newsletters round out the program. We Show Art is the Bureau's jubilee edition, published on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. The book surveys exhibitions, projects, and activities from the 90s to the beginning of the 21st century, and includes a complete facsimile of the entire run of the Bureau Amsterdam Newsletter, designed by Mevis & Van Deursen. Snapshots, installation views, and artist portraits provide visual documentation, while a set of essays by various authors give the historical and contextual framework for the Bureau.

                Book Description

Traditional economic and financial theory is being challenged because normative, prescriptive models derived from it are not predicting the behavior of successful producers, investors, or consumers as well as anticipated. Economists and psychologists are documenting anomalies at the individual level, in financial markets, and in natural economic settings. This opens the larger question of the importance of psychological, sociological, and other phenomena for financial and economic behavior. It even raises the issue of what economic rationality really is. This book surveys and examines the increasing evidence of economic anomalies. It argues for an eventual, comprehensive behavioral framework for economics and finance, but in the interim, indicates how the tendency to use "rules of thumb" might be taken into account to improve predictions about decision making. The book is aimed at those, including business executives and students, with intermediate-level preparation in economics or finance. Part I, however, is accessible to those with only an introductory course. Part II should prove useful to professionals in economics and finance who seek a solid introduction to this area. The presentation speculates about possible applications of a behavioral analysis to past and present public policy issues. It closes with guidelines for decision making that suggest how, in the absence of a comprehensive behavioral theory of economics and finance, to improve prediction about decision making by taking into account the heuristics, or rules of thumb, used by decision makers and the biases that those heuristics involve.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of the "new" behavioral economics(finance).......2005-02-06

Schwartz has written an excellent summary of what is now called the "new" field of behavioral economics(or psychology or finance). The title is somewhat misleading. It conflates the concept of rationality(all rational economic men and women supposedly have a complete, perfect, error free, costless information set that is clear and not subject to any ambiguity, vagueness,or uncertainty over time.Likewise, there are no computational, information processing, absorption, or digestion constraints of any kind.Based on these assumptions, economic rationality is defined to mean "engaged in continuous pursuit of optimization",the goal of which is to maximize profit or utility or minimize cost or disutility, subject to some income or resource constraint on income or output)with purely mathematical optimization problems. The idea of rationality as meaning introspection or thinking or reasoning or seeking to understand is excluded. This approach describes neoclassical economics and finance, which makes up about 80% of economics and finance. The "Irrationality"(Rationality Gone Awry...) in the title refers to the actual behavior of economic agents who ,obviously,do not come close to satisfying any of the neoclassical assumptions. At best, neoclassical theory is a normative structure without any predictive, prescriptive or descriptive capability.Schwartz credits the rise of the new behavioral economics mainly to the work of psychologists Tversky and Kahneman(TK) in the early 1970's and notes psychologist Herbert Simon's earlier work in the 1950's that unfortunately had no major impact on the manner in which economists operate.Essentially, the new behavioral economists presented huge amounts of empirical and experimental evidence that the standard subjective expected utility(SEU)model(this model is the statistical/probabilistic counterpart of the rationality model discussed above)had little empirical support if it was to be used as a descriptive, predictive or prescriptive model.A large number of anomalies were uncovered in the empirical and experimental results. This anomalous behavior directly conflicted with the results predicted and described by the SEU theory.Schwartz devotes a good number of pages to discussing and listing the various anomalies such as the preference reversal effect, conjunction effect, disjunction effect, certainty effect, translation effect, reflection effect, equity premium puzzle, etc. There are a few shortcomings.Although he clearly mentions the idea of ambiguity and gives the two urn Ellsberg problem on p.81,he neglects to give a full description of the nature of Ellsberg's conclusion-most decision makers can't give precise single number estimates of relevant probabilities.Instead, they give interval estimates due to the fact that the available information set is vague, ambiguous or unclear.Similarly, the earlier pathbreaking work done by J M Keynes in his A Treatise on Probability on interval estimates, ambiguity(weight of the evidence)and decision making(Keynes's conventional coefficient of risk and weight model in chapter 26 of the TP)is never mentioned.Lastly, the path breaking work of Benoit Mandelbrot in explaining the equity premium puzzle is not mentioned. In fact,Mandelbrot's work is not even listed.

                      Book Description

This book is a call to educators to recognize and resist the rhetoric around education and to question the practices that are controlling education all over the world, reducing it to little more than skills development in preparation for work.

David Hursh of University of Rochester, New York argues that testing and accountability have fostered the decline of teacher professionalism and local control, thus achieving compliance and making contestation all but impossible. Helen Colley of Leeds University, England questions the generally venerated strategy of mentoring to show how its dynamic requires docility from the learner and thus perpetuates inequality.

These are but two of the dozen or so academics who have come together to challenge the prevailing academic discourse. In Part Two of the book, they suggest ways in which to provoke and enable students to critique the system.

"Discourse, Power and Learning" is for students, teachers, trainers, lecturers and researchers. This exciting and readable book will compel them to think again about what may seem to them inevitable educational practice. Those in positions of power will be led to question the status quo in education and considering the positive alternatives suggested here.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Road Map to Change.......2001-01-12

This book reminds all of us who is really responsible for our own career choices. David provides a framework and safety net for those of us who are in a rut to "take the plunge".

David doesn't try to solve the problem for us, but instead, gives us guidance on what it takes to own the career choices we make. He makes us very aware of what the rewards are if we have the courage to follow our hearts.

I was crying when I finished the book. I brought me face-to-face with issues I was dealing with and the personal satisfaction I lacked from the work I was doing. Now it's up to me!

2 out of 5 stars Same old dependent-thinking!.......1998-05-18

I was very disappointed in this book - David Harder has a FEW interesting things to say to those of us "working stiffs" who want to get off the treadmill - but overall he preaches dependence on high-paid "life coaches" - an unrealistically expensive solution to most of us - and an unappetizing one to those of us who like to think of ourselves as "Adults"!! There's nothing here but the same-old "buy my book-take my seminar- change your life in one short weekend" makeover madness!

All 3 of my children have one of these. I have engraved their names in gold on the covers of each. I LOVE this book for the detailed info it 'requests' and all the space to write "Special Memories". I have many of Tabori's books and am now looking for a memory book that goes past 5 years of age.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-08-03

This is a great book to keep all the information you recieve during and after pregnancy. This book keeps track of all appointments, prenatal care, delivery, and all of the newborns information. I bought one for my first child, and ordered another as soon as I found out I was pregnant with my second. This is a very helpful organizer.....even has pockets in the back for any ultrasound pictures or information that you want to save.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2005-01-18

I received this book from a friend when I was pregnant with my first child, and I absolutely love it! There are many spaces for pictures & lots of room to record written information that I will always want to remember; like special moments from my pregnancy and the first five years of my son's life. I like it so much that I plan on buying another copy for my second child.

5 out of 5 stars Great Big Book of Organization.......2004-05-28

I love this book. I used it for my first baby and am purchasing it again for my second. In addition to keeping information regarding medical visits and growth, it has places for fun little stories and brthdays. It is a great baby book, if you want to use it that way, or as a supplement to your more traditional baby book.

                      4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-01-25

This book is fantastic except that it devotes too many preprescribed pages to things like pregnancy and health and not enough to what your baby may have been up to. For example, the first almost 50 pages are devoted specifically to pregnancy and planning for baby. Six of those pages are for the brands and colors of items that you may have picked for your baby's nursery. In contrast, each of the baby's years gets about 10 pages. I didn't even get the book until almost my due date, so you see my plight.

That being said, the graphics are adorable and we are enjoying the book. It's ALMOST exactly what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Keepsake that will take you through year 5!.......2002-04-09

I had my first child in October 2001, and bought this book early in the pregnancy. I was initially impressed by its appearance- it uses a lot of vintage child art throughout. But, more importantly, I have found this a easy to use and comprehensive book. It is hard cover and spiral bound, and closes with an elastic loop. This is handy so I can stick in photos, announcements, invitations, etc. without fear of losing them. There are many places in the book to attach photos of the appropriate event or time period. Also, this book is useful for not just the pregnancy memories but becomes a baby book, recording your child's events through age 5. There is a useful pocket in the back. There are checklists, quotes, and calendars galore. I am not a big "journaler"; this book helped by guiding me through my memories. I look back and already have recorded so much, but it doesn't seem like it has taken much time. This was a tremendous purchase for me, and I know my husband, son, and I will love to look back on it.

5 out of 5 stars Classy and Complete.......2001-06-11

I recently found out that I am expecting my third, and probably last, child and I decided to find a journal in which to record my pregnancy so that I could really savor and appreciate this special time. This book is more than I expected!! The charming illustrations have a vintage feel that will still look classic when your baby is grown. The book is divided into sections: pregnancy, health and development, first year, second year, etc on up to the fifth year. The book has a chunky feel that makes you want to curl up with it and reminisce. It is a resource for all of the names and phone numbers you'll need to record as a parent but it also guides you into capturing all of those special "firsts" and memories (ie. favorite foods & recipes, favorite songs, quotes from your child's teachers)that you'll enjoy looking back on when your child is grown. I am really looking forward to filling up this book.

                        Book Description

They have strong values--faith, family, tolerance, intelligence and altruism among them. But, contrary to what one might guess, these people are not America's sage elders. This is the Millennial Generation. Born between 1982 and 2000, the oldest among them today are entering their 20s or in their teen years. They aim to rebel against society by cleaning it up, returning to "old-fashioned" values and relationships. Author Verhaagen describes why, nonetheless, parents are feeling more anxious and frazzled than ever before, even as they raise what some are predicting to be "our next hero generation." Verhaagen explains how research shows adults can help keep these young people on a positive path, stoke their ideals, and help them be resilient when the inevitible mistakes and obstacles arise. The Baby Boomers and older Gen Xers are parenting this new crew, aiming to ground them and instill great hope for the future. But Millennials face challenges greater than any generation faced before them. Many spend all or part of their childhood without a father in the home. Technology, including the Internet, is exposing them to adult material at increasingly young ages. They are subject to violent images that are more common than ever before in movies, television, and games. So parents still need to provide guidance. Verhaagen aims to help parents with research and advice, including how to teach determination, problem-solving, emotional smarts, and resilience. His text includes vignettes and his personal experience as a psychotherapist/father.

                                Book Description

There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.

The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.

100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.

Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.

Our partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.
