Book Description
Addresses not only energy resource efficiency and healthy material aspects of a home, but also how our bodies connect with the spiritual energies of the earth, sky, and other living things in their environment, and why maintaining those connections in our homes is important to our physical, mental, and emotional health.
Customer Reviews:
Less Than Expected.......2002-09-24
I had hoped that the book would have helped with specific issues of 'design', as to how to 'create' or 'recreate' a home into one that could heal. While the author writes well, her background in feature articles was evident -- the book lacked continuity. While the introduction held great promise, I had to read well past page 100 to find the sort of 'detail' I was looking for (many pages covered healthy/healing environments which were not specific to a home, as the title would imply). While Barbara covered a number of 'needed' topics, her coverage was not as in-depth as I would have preferred. I often found myself 'scanning' for the meat only to end up in the next chapter.
While appropriate for someone who wants only to 'dabble' in the various topics, her high-level treatment might be appropriate. I was looking for more substance.
A wonderful guide for anyone buying or designing a new home.......1999-10-21
The Healing House provides an excellent overview of how the places where we live can affect the way we live. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering buying or designing a new home. The most important section of the book contains the "Healing House Design Principles" which explain both what features to look for in a new home and why they are important. Harwood talks about home building from hands-on experience as a builder, yet she has the gift of being able to explain important building concepts in terms that are easy to understand. For people who are more technically minded, there is a technical appendix in the back of the book. Barbara Harwood not only knows what she is talking about, but she strongly believes in what she is saying. Her knowledge, warmth and enthusiasm are likely to change the way many people think about houses.
Home is where the health is..........1999-10-14
... and this book may help you find both. Full of practical knowledge and advice, it looks at the quest for a dream house from a much needed holistic viewpoint. I met the author in the process of doing a television news story about one of her unique projects and got to see firsthand how the principles of energy efficiency outlined in her book really do work. Ultimately, this approach can not only save precious natural resources and save you money, it can also help you find or design a home that is a refuge from stress not a cause of it.

Poignant photocollage juxtaposes culture and the nuclear age.......1999-02-05
Nagatani's surreal Polaroid photocollages create a jarring contrast between the ancient traditions of the people most affected by nuclear technology - the Japanese and the native peoples of the SW US test sites - and the Bomb itself. The saturated-color Pop images are poignant, silent, and powerful. A unique treatment of the human shadow in the nuclear age.

Book Description
Alan Milne builds on the argument of his Ethical Frontiers of the State that limits on governmental action are to be understood in terms of humanistic social ethics. Here Milne considers the role of the market in politics, and in particular the relation of the market to the obligations of government to advance human wellbeing. Issues covered include contingency in politics, the command economy, capitalism, the welfare state, inequality, and representative democracy.
Book Description
Much applied environmental economics is concerned with the valuation of changes in environmental quality. Obtaining reliable valuation estimates requires attention to theoretical and econometric issues that are often quite subtle. Volume 2 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics presents both the theory and the practice of environmental valuation. It synthesizes the vast literature that has accumulated since the publication of the Handbook of Natural Resource and Energy Economics two decades ago. It includes chapters on individual valuation methods written by researchers responsible for fundamental advances in those methods. It also includes cross-cutting chapters that deal with aspects of welfare theory, uncertainty, experimental methods, and public health that are pertinent to valuation. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to research and policy issues that arise not only in high-income countries, where most of the theory and econometrics that underlie applied valuation methods have been developed, but also in poorer parts of the world. The volume provides a state-of-the-art reference for scholars and practitioners alike.

Shows how personal spirituality and spirituality in the workplace can be both substantive and practical. Hawkins draws from his years of entrepreneurial experience and organizational leadership to provide instruction that is both credible and insightful to people who want to rethink and redirect their leadership in their marriages, families and careers.
Customer Reviews:
God and Leadership.......2005-06-06
I liked the authors approach of NOT breaking up our lives into separate components of work, personal, and spiritual. His definition of spiritual, however, may be a little different than mine or yours. While I have nothing against the authors spiritual beliefs I found certain chapters lacking in substance and felt he was relying on God as an excuse for his inability to give clear direction. If it was spiritual direction I was lacking I would be reading a religious text, not a book on leadership.
Great book to "put all the pieces together".......2002-10-22
The book Leadership as a Lifestyle, by John Hawkins, is a great book that talks about how leadership must be looked at as a lifestyle more than just a method of thinking. Hawkins emphasizes that the only way to become a leader is to talk, act, and use the principles of leadership in everything in your life. He breaks the book up into three major parts: (1) Leadership at Work, (2) Leadership at Home, and (3) Leadership with Friends. Each part is then broken into subparts to show how leadership principles should be applied to that specific part of your life.
Hawkins draws upon many of the different leadership skills that the O'Hair book lists. Hawkins agrees that managers are completely different than leaders. He poses the question, "Should managers be leaders?" and then follows up with "Are all managers leaders?" As we saw in the O'Hair textbook, the answers are yes and no, respectively. Hawkins then continues to discuss the different systems of management theory and how those theories can relate to leadership. He poses many questions for each of the different styles of managerial theory that O'Hair lists. Specifically, he asks how one can lead in any of the first three managerial systems from Likert's Systems of Management. He questions whether one can lead if one has no followers. Hawkins shows that to have followers, one must gain long-term loyalty and commitment. He further proves that only life-empowered leadership (essentially Likert's System 4) can accurately do such a thing.
Unlike other self-help books, Hawkins offers many questions to ask yourself as a manager, father/mother, friend, or human to test your leadership skills. For example, he states that three questions, in particular, are daily questions to ask yourself: (1) What specific people am I leading, (2) What exactly am I leading them to do or to become, and (3) Are they doing it or becoming it? If you don't know the answers to these questions, Hawkins states that you are not a leader, as you are not leading anybody. And, to quote Hawkins, "a leader with no followers is nobody."
Already I have asked myself many of the questions that Hawkins has posed. I realize that in many of my endeavors where I consider myself a leader, I am not. I may be in a position of power, but I have no followers. I need to change my lifestyle to fit that of one of life-empowered leadership. I need to be loyal and offer a commitment to all my employees. I need them to know that I am here to help, and if they are willing to follow, I can lead them. This will help me tremendously as I further my career and gain more knowledge and wisdom. Already I am re-reading Hawkins book for more in-depth information. I would definitely rate this book as a solid five star book. It has already helped me tremendously and will continue to do so for quite some time.
A Deeper Perspective on Leadership.......2002-04-01
Mr. Hawkins takes a page from his own book and helps the reader to see reality as it is. That reality being that no leader leads out in a vacuum or a neatly compartmentalized world, but exercises his influence amidst a community of relationships. With this reality in mind, Mr. Hawkins gives many practical helps and insightful gems to help the reader build and maximize his leadership in all areas of life, not just in the business realm. There are concepts here that I have not come across in any other leadership book. Because of its unique insights, richness and practicality, I will be keeping this book close by for future reference.
Excellent Read.......2002-01-31
Hawkins provides an excellent framework from which to carefully think about leadership as a lifestyle. He effectively argues against compartmentalizing the different areas of influence (e.g., family, work) in our lives, but instead, encourages the reader to balance the conflicts that are sure to arise. He also provides useful insights into managing our lives in each area of influence so that we prove ourselves faithful in each.
The book is written in a concise and very readable manner. I highly recommend it, and have even purchased additional copies to give to friends and family!!!
A Great Personal Investment Challenge.......2002-01-30
John Hawkins challeneged me to take a meaningful look at my life to identify those aspects of my personality, character, interpersonal relationship skills, etc. that could severly limit my ability to be an effective leader in any sphere of influence (work, family, church, community). He reminded me that my influence as a leader will only be as strong as the character, competence, and commitment I demonstrate through the integrity of my words and action, 24/7.
The emphasis Mr. Hawkins places on the leader as a servant was particularily inspiring. He attaches a very high calling for leaders to invest their lives in others. He makes a very convincing case for the development of mentor-protege relationships. The level of commitment required to build these relationships is challenging, but the reward of life-long unshakeable friendships is priceless.
Mr. Hawkins offers no gimmicks or short-cuts. He offers us the opportunity to develop into lifestyle leaders who will leave a legacy. Legacies are not made of short-cuts and gimmicks.
This book is a fantastic opportunity to take an introspective look at yourself, and to approach leadership as your "purpose" and not your "position."

Ending diabetes denial.......1999-03-27
There are two reasons why every diabetic should own this book: (1) It is the best source I've found to combat what is manifest with every disease: denial! You cannot read this and continue to behave in ways that guarantee diabetes complications. (2) Its print is large enough for those of us whose eyesight has been compromised by diabetes.
READ THIS BOOK if you have diabetes!
excellent.......1998-10-21
This is a superb overview of diabetes complications written in easily understandable layman's language. It covers many types of complications and gives causes, symptoms and treatments for them. Even more important - a great deal of information on prevention is also given. This book is for those who suffer from this condition and those who care about them.

Punchy and Packed.......2007-03-15
Karl Friday's "Hired Swords" is a fairly brief book, though it packs a tonne of information into the 177 pages of main text, (not including endnotes, index and all the rest).
Friday focuses on the Heian Period in Japan, mainly from the late 7th century to the 11th and 12th centuries. The book deals with the military structures and how they changed through the Heian Period. This includes the policing functions of some military units, as well. Rather than accepting the common perception that the Heian court was an ineffectual group of flunkies more interested in poetry than practical realities, Friday presents quite a different view. Instead of attributing the rise of private military groups to Court indifference, Friday posits that the changes made were deliberate changes by the Court to streamline the military, increase its efficiency and meet changing needs throughout the period.
Friday provides copious endnotes, adding more detail to what is given in the text. He has referenced his work well, leaving no doubt that he has thought this through thoroughly.
I completely enjoyed this book without reservation, and I gained a lot from it. It was easily read, I found it accessible, and I was hooked until the last page. I can recommend this book wholeheartedly as a must for anyone interested in the developments of Heian military organisation. and how it fed into the rise of the Samurai some centuries later.
Interesting and well researched book.......2004-02-03
An excellent reading on the subject of Japan's military history in the ancient period.
Be Careful........2000-06-09
I had to read this book and write a review on it for my Japanese History course at school. However, after starting the book I soon realized that I was in over my head. The detail of this book is amazing and his sources and citations are top notch. The author also includes a glossary that comes in handy. However, if you are not an Asian scholar or have some type of deep seated interest in the subject, you might want to reconsider. This book is extremely advanced and left me having to read several pages over and over until I caught everything. My biggest gripe with the book is the author's way of introducing the Japanese language into the book. While writing the author would have what the Japanese word is for a selected word, i.e. warrior. However after having seen the Japanese word the author would then replace the english word for the Japanese one. I would not get far before I had no clue what the words meant, and I lost track of the argument the author was making because I was looking at the glossary repeatedly or looking through previous pages. No doubt the book is well researched and the author knowledgeable, but novices beware.

Book Description
The year 1998 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel and half a century of devastation for the Palestinian people. Unequal Conflict re-examines Israel's apparent victory against the odds and argues that the odds in fact were always stacked in Israel's favor: Zionism created the conditions in which it was possible to wage and win the bitter struggle with the indigenous Palestinian peoples, and to exploit their inability to offer any effective resistance to the appropriation of their lands and the suppression of their rights. As a phase of modern Palestinian history draws to a close in defeat, what can be salvaged? Is Palestine doomed, or can it be transformed and revitalized? These fundamental questions frame this stimulating and original account.
Customer Reviews:
Decent Analysis.......2000-07-31
An excellent intorduction to the politics surrounding the problem of Palestine vs. Israel, this book is very straightforward and easy to read, profusely annotated and suffers from few biases. The author obviously leans much more towards the Palestinian side, but does not treat the Israeli side unfarily. He goes to pains to show how the conflict in the Middle East is not due to "age old struggles" as so many people have it, but are a direct resault of 19th and 20th century plotics. Zionism is painted as an oppressive colonial force, and the Palestinians are seen as the underdogs . . . whether this is due to bias as opposed to reality I doubt. He does not really empahsise the rolls of religions in the conflict, but of land ownership and goes a long way to dispelling popular myths about this conflict in Palestine. A very interesting book.
a good book seen by the Palestinian point.......1999-09-19
This is a very good book and very straightforward. It does not use many political terms and is easy to read. It gives a historical and overall picture of the conflict. The author is very anti-Israeli and makes no secret about it.
