Remember those great Volkswagen ads?.......2001-08-08
For an excellent alternative to "Is the Bug Dead" (which is, unfortunately, out of print), you can check out "Remember those great Volkswagen ads?", published November 2000 and still in print in the UK - check out [...]. It charts the history of the Beetle advertising and has an additional chapter on the New Beetle. It is a beautiful, fully illustrated book and a fantastic read for Beetle enthusiasts and those in advertising alike.

Just help me to find an original of this book. I'm searching for it since 1994 and still haven't found one. I think this says enough for a graphic designer that simply loves the style of DDB and the Volkswagen ads.
A compilation of the classic VW ads from the 1960's........1996-08-17
With little commentary this book lets the ads speak for themselves

EXTREMELY ANTI-KIT CARSON, full of mischaracterizations & lies........2006-03-21
Mr. Trafzer cannot be relied upon to tell the truth about Kit Carson. Someone far more experienced than me, R. C. Gordon-McCutchan, former director of the Kit Carson museum and ed. of KIT CARSON, INDIAN FIGHTER OR INDIAN KILLER? (1996, Univ. Press of Colorado), who also wrote Chatper 2 in that book, clearly describes the fundamental PREJUDICE against Carson as exhibited in C. F. Trafzer's book. A study of historical facts [letters from Carson, letters to Carson, people who knew Carson and talked with him, etc.] invariably leads to asertaining the TRUTH, whereas oral
Navajo history, seeped in 70 year old memories, leads to simplification and lies.
If you want to know the FACTS about KC and the Navajo, the best book by far is Lawrence Kellys' NAVAJO ROUNDUP (Pruett Press, 1970) and the book I site above.
Kit Carson was a fine man and a great American hero; Trafzer is quite mistaken, his book should be ignored, or used for fire starting. [For an account at what the Navajo did before Kit Carson was ordered by Gen. J. T. Carleton to round them up, I suggest NAVAJO WARS by Frank McNitt (Univ. New Mexico, 1972),
a 477 page tome with extensive analysis and footnotes, by someone who had been studying the Navajo for over 20 years when he wrote it. ] -Caz
Enigma, contraversy and retrospect.......2004-05-04
This book isn't precisely about Kit Carson, though in a sense, it is. The Navajo campaign of 1864 and old Kit are inseparable from one another, Siamese twins of events and history. The campaign resulted in defeat and the Trail of Tears for the Din'e people, exile to Bosque Redondo for several years, and a century and a half of bitterness. Kit Carson led that campaign and he's been vilified by the Navajo from that time to this.
Trafzer documents the story of the war as well, probably, as it can be documented. The facts are susceptible to slanting through emphasis here and failure to emphasize there, but the facts remain. The same is true of all we know about the mystery man Kit Carson was.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the Navajo wars. I'd also suggest it as a piece of any study of Kit Carson, who is well worth the study. A hero, a coward, a man of wisdom and noteworthy education who could not write his own name.
