    Book Description

In 1940, The Museum of Modern Art staged a retrospective of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, the great American architect, then in his 70s, who had experienced a professional rebirth over the previous decade after many years of relative invisibility. Wright was a full collaborator in the organization of the project, which he intended, he said, to be "the show to end all shows." To accompany the exhibition, the Museum planned a publication in the form of a Festschrift, commissioning essays from many of the best-known architecture figures of the day--Alvar Aalto, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Richard Neutra, Mies van der Rohe, and others. Wright, however, took issue with certain parts of the book, complimentary though it was, and after an incendiary exchange of correspondence, including the architect's threat to cancel the entire exhibition, the show went forward but the book did not. In the 60-odd years since, the essays that MoMA commissioned have remained in its files, most of them lost to public view. Now, for the first time in one volume, MoMA is publishing the entire surviving group, along with a full selection of the letters and telegrams between Wright, MoMA, and others detailing MoMA's and the architect's collaboration-cum-collision. Accompanying these period documents is an extensive essay by the noted Frank Lloyd Wright scholar Kathryn Smith, who provides a full account of the exhibition, both as it was and as it was intended to be--including, for example, an unrealized plan to erect one of Wright's Usonian Houses in the MoMA garden. Smith also explores Wright's relationship to his critics, the architectural profession, and the Museum in the years leading up to the exhibition.

          Book Description

"In the room next door to Father Pavlos's restoration workshop, I discovered a treasure of very old photographs. The pictures were roughly the same size as those that figure on passports. They looked fairly normal to the naked eye, simply damaged and covered with microscopic cracks. I was able to scrutinize them more closely using the magnifying glass I take with me wherever I go, which allows me to open a wider eye onto the world and discover many an unsuspected, stunning universe. I looked at these small pictures through my magnifying glass, and I suddenly discovered that the faces of these monks were made of...dust! The slightest breath could have blown them to smithereens."--Xavier Zimbardo

During a rarely granted artistic residency on the holy Greek peninsula of Mount Athos, Xavier Zimbardo discovered in an abandoned monastery hundreds of deteriorating photographs of Russian monks who were in residence there prior to returning to their home country to fight against the Bolsheviks in 1917. Zimbardo photographed a selection of these images on site, never moving them from where he found them; the result is a visually arresting collection of seventy-five portraits that evoke the chasm between absence and presence, physicality and spirituality, sensuality and disintegration.

With a compelling introduction by world-renowned and Booker Prize-winning novelist Barry Unsworth, Monks of Dust: The Holy Men of Mount Athos is a sublime and moving work.

5 out of 5 stars Images of Faith.......2003-07-01

Images of faith and holiness are not hard to come buy, but to find historical collections of them is rather rare. Zimbardo does a masterful job in presenting the subject with as little interruption between the viewer and the subject as possible, capturing the spirit of the monks beautifully. In so doing, he transports us to Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain of Eastern Orthodoxy where there exists a world of faith, sacrifice, and holiness that few of us will ever encounter in a personal way. Well worth viewing!

There is a similar collection of photos of Romanian monks under the title "Eikon" that is in print, but very difficult to find.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Photographic Genius.......2001-12-16

Besides acting as a unique and unparalleled historical document of people and a time gone by--one that has never before been seen--this book is filled with some of the most extraordinary photography I have ever seen. It's quite rare to see such a combination of history and art.

          5 out of 5 stars Jaw-Dropping.......2001-05-10

The story behind these photos makes them all the more awe-inspiring, but their beauty stands alone. Superb photography and design, unique and amazing subject. If you're looking for something new from a photography book, this is it.

          Book Description

The link between poverty and deforestation in developing countries is of increasing global concern. The authors of this clear, hope-filled book explore the diverse causes of tropical deforestation and offer remedies appropriate to the biology and culture of different regions. They show how modern forestry techniques enable us to alleviate poverty without destroying forests.

3 out of 5 stars Forests to Fight Poverty offers guidelines, but no solutions.......2000-04-26

Forests to Fight Poverty began with a questionnaire to United Nations Development Program resident representatives to assess the usefulness of a book outlining the interwoven problems of poverty and forest destruction. The resident representatives agreed that there is a need for such a text and provided information about the needs of smallholder farming families in their countries. It is immediately clear that no one global solution will apply to all nations. This book begins with the implication that sustaining the forest can in turn sustain the people who live in and near the forest. It goes on to identify general principles for forest management that should apply globally. For example, the any management scheme should be monitored for its success and able to be altered in response to the data collected. The authors recommend that governments work with the local people and non governmental organizations to create policies that can sustain the forest. However, it is not clear to me that any real solutions can be generated when so many groups are trying to be heard. This approach also implies a true democratic society, which is certainly not in existence in all developing countries with threatened forests. Forests to Fight Poverty gives a comprehensive look at deforestation and forest management , but it is very dry reading. Only the truly dedicated reader will find the will to get through this book.

Economists can no longer feel that they operate in a world of certainties. In this book, scholars from around the world with a wide range of theoretical perspectives probe into typical Shacklean themes of time and money, uncertainty and expectation and into the roots of Shackle's philosophical and methodological stance.

As the co-editor of the book 'Economics as an Art of Thought', I should like you to know that your information is wrong in stating that the book was co-edited by Stephan Boehm and John Pheby. Instead the only two editors of 'Economics as an art of Thought', published by Routledge in 2000 (with subsequent new editions), are Peter E. Earl and Stephen F. Frowen.

          3 out of 5 stars Again,let me repeat:Keynesian probabilities are intervals.......2004-11-07

None of the authors in this book of collected essays appears to have any understanding that ,in general, probabilities for J M Keynes were essentially interval estimates. The same conclusion holds for G L S Shackle himself.Nowhere in any of Shackle's varied and diverse scholarship does he ever consider the possibility that Keynesian probabilities are mainly intervals. Finally, the same conclusion reached above holds for the author of the main essay on Shackle's views on probability,Jochen Runde.Runde writes under the influence of Frank P Ramsey and his two very poor reviews of Keynes's 1921 A Treatise on Probability(TP).Like Ramsey, Runde's assessment of Keynes's TP rests primarily on chapter 3 of the TP combined with chapters 4,6,26 and a few snippets taken from the rest of the other 29 chapters of the TP.Keynes intended chapter 3 of the TP to be an introductory chapter on the measurement of probabilities that would be accessible to a general reader who did not have any specialized knowledge of mathematics, probability, logic and statistics. However, Keynes clearly warned the specialist that only after reading Part II would Keynes's approach to the measurement of probabilities be completely developed. On p. 37 of the TP,Keynes states:"It will not be possible to explain in detail how and in what sense a meaning can sometimes be given to the numerical measurement of probabilities until Part II is reached".At the beginning of chapter 5 and the end of chapter 10 Keynes repeats this warning.Unfortunately,no economist or philosopher took Keynes at his word and studied what it was that Keynes was doing in Part II of the TP.Instead,in its place, economists and philosophers accepted the error filled claims made by Ramsey about"Keynes's mysterious nonnumerical probabilities and degrees of belief."Naturally, the one exception was Bertrand Russell, who recognized the weak nature of both of Ramsey's reviews. It is in chapters 15,17,20 and 22 that Keynes developed and then applied his "inexact numerical approximation" technique ,involving probabilities with both upper and lower bounds or limits,to the study of analogy and induction in Part III of the TP.None of the essays in this book deal with or mention Keynes's monumental accomplishment.Keynes is the first scholar in history to put forth a clearcut mathematical technique to provide interval estimates.Keynes's approach was based on the original work of George Boole.Keynes also mentioned other approaches that could be used to specify his nonnumerical probabilities(intervals)in chapters 5 and 15 of the TP.

                Book Description

Educational administration is a field currently undergoing great intellectual change. The dominant scientific tradition now competes with a range of alternative, systematically different, accounts of such major concerns in the field as: the nature of administrative and organizational theory, explaining and improving educational leadership and practice, the place of values and human subjectivity in our accounts of educational organizations, the nature of educational policy and the conduct of research. Knowing Educational Administration surveys and analyzes all of the most important theories in the field. However, as differences among these theories reflect ultimately different philosophical positions, the book offers a new philosophical perspective on educational administration. For administrative theories to count as sound knowledge they must meet the demands of our best theories of knowledge. The book outlines and defends a particular coherentist view of knowledge and then uses that view both to criticize existing administrative theories and to develop a distinctive alternative. The alternative is a new postpositivist science of administration which is able to include ethics and subjectivity within the scope of sound administrative knowledge.

                      Book Description

Thinking differently has always been one of the guiding factors to business success. In today's constantly changing, global marketplace - thinking outside the box is the very key that unlocks the door to success. In Paths to Succeed, Colin Turner combines his own entrepreneurial business experiences and teaching, with Eastern philosophy and plain common sense to show us all where we can find that key. The secret is to question first how we see and relate to the world around us; from there to open our eyes to the much wider possibilities that exist. In order to achieve this, the author points out seven fundamental senses that must be sharpened to succeed in developing an innovative thought-process for leadership, communication and creativity.

I don't generally follow rigid diet plans, but in Healthy Expectations Pamela Smith doesn't give a rigid plan. Instead, she explains the way nutrition works and presents some general guidelines for healthy eating. Other plans I've immediately dismissed as being impractical, but with this one the guidelines will help me steer my choices in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want, or need to know to eat well for baby........1999-06-28

Healthy Expectations addresses eating well for pregnancy or preparations for pregnancy. It tells you how to eat to combat the ever horrid morning sickness. It tells you when and what to eat for the most optimal weight gain during pregnancy while nourishing that precious little life inside. Pamela Smith guides you on how to lose weight healthfully before pregnancy, how to gain during pregnancy and how to lose after pregnancy. I highly recommend this book to my friends and all those who are interested in healthy eating for you and for baby!

Pamela Smith has really captured my attention with this book. She explains nutrition and how it affects our bodies as well as the bodies of our unborn children. I bought the book to read in preparation for pregnancy. I find I'm following her recommendations now and am feeling better, eating healthier, and am satisfied after every meal and snack. She's a nutritional genius!! No one has ever drawn me in and educated me about food quite like she has. Thank you, Mrs. Smith!

                        Book Description

We have long relied on historians to sift through the debris of the past and piece together narratives to shape our understanding of events. But it is in the letters, diaries, speeches, song lyrics, newspaper articles, and government papers that history truly comes alive. Eminent historian Douglas Brinkley has carefully chosen the critical documents that bring to life the days of the war from the first Allied counteroffensive to V-J Day. His selections span the momentous, such as Eisenhower's address to the troops in preparation for D-Day or Hirohito's surrender on Japanese radio, to the intimate and the obscure. Readers will find one of Tokyo Rose's broadcasts, letters from soldiers on the eve of battle, Ernie Pyle's dispatches from Sicily, and Truman's diary entries in which he wrestles with the decision to drop the A-bomb. Each primary document is accompanied by a relevant piece of New York Times reporting from the period and original text explaining the historical significance of the event in the war's progress. News photos and other images add a strong visual component to this vivid re-creation of history.

4 out of 5 stars How the state undermines the individual.......2002-11-11

Dr. Green does an exceptionally admirable job here in undermining the official figures which are supposed to measure poverty in the United Kingdom. He sets out, in clear and concise detail how the figures reflect something quite different from poverty as the average man or woman on the Clapham omnibus might know it. He goes on to show how poverty has come to mean some sort of reliance on the Nanny state where more and more people receive some sort of handout from the state. From this it follows that people are undermined by their reliance on the state and the culture of the victim has replaced self-help. He concludes his work by setting out how earlier generations sought to help the poor by encouraging and educating them to help themselves rather than just dipping a hand in the pocket and giving people cash.

Shifting our view away from the domestic scene for a moment, it is interesting to contrast this view with the dominant view among aid workers in less developed countries. One often hears charities talk about teaching people to fish etc and the impact that will have on the survival and future development of threatened people's. Yet in the developed world the cry is always for more resources.

Green's work is really part of a bigger picture. The sad fact is that in the so-called developed countries the state has taken over the rearing and development of people. Through the device of dealing with poverty the state has extended it's tentacles to reach almost everywhere in society. Income transfers have shifted resources through a bureaucracy which has grown apace from all sections of society to other sections. State education and healthcare, with their attendant administrations, have brought almost everyone within it's grasp. With every increased or extended benefit, with every increased tax break, opposition is weakened. The economics of politics helps us to understand this process.

Green raises a standard around which free thinking men and women might gather. Alas, there are very few who can rally without declaring an interest. Like drug addicts, we all may want this to stop but we need our financial fixes so much that we cannot endure to go without because it is so hard. Our politicians, even those with convictions , have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo or even expanding and deepening the role and extent of the state.

This book does a great service in bringing this issue to the wider public. It is long on description and short on prescription. What the world needs is men and women not mice. How are we to travel to an independent and living future? That is the question which must be answered.

                              Book Description

This book is an original and perceptive study of Britain's withdrawal from her last Arab Dependencies, based on a combination of first hand experience and extensive research. Glen Balfour-Paul opens by outlining Britain's position in the Middle East at the end of the Second World War. He then presents in three separate chapters a detailed account of the forces that culminated in withdrawal from each of the countries. In the final chapters, the author compares and contrasts the three episodes in terms of Britain's evolving attitude to empire, public pressures from within and outside the territories, the tensions that arose between policy makers in London and those executing their decisions, attitudes of British officials to their task and the political and economic aftermath of independence.

There is a perceived North-South divide in British politics. In this study, William Field points out that this divide marks the resurgence of a core-periphery cleavage which was also dominant in British politics in the years before 1914. He shows how similar the geographical pattern of the vote was in the general election of 1989 to that in the two general elections of 1910, the last before the outbreak of World War I. Many of the same constitution issues - devolution and reform of the second chamber were coming to the fore then.

The author has obviously well-crafted this book out of his extensive knowledge of the field. Perhaps best of all is the manner of the books presentation and flow . . . it is almost as if one were sitting in a comfy chair by the fire with the author, brandy in hand, discussing politics. An excellent read.
