Book Description

The rich architectural legacy of the Angevins, three generations of French kings who reigned in southern Italy from 1266 to 1343, is very little known today. This groundbreaking book examines Angevin religious architecture, bringing to light for the first time the novelty and importance of these buildings while extending current understanding of the variety of medieval architecture beyond the well-known cathedrals of France and England.

Caroline Bruzelius explores the complex encounter of the French with the worlds of the Mediterranean and of Italy. Although the Angevin period has often been associated with a vigorous renewal of the Gothic style in Italy, she contends instead that the principal Angevin monuments are built of local materials, reviving traditional building techniques and aesthetic preferences. The result is an architecture of adaptation and integration rather than one of colonial importation.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book about a great city........2005-04-19

The Stones of Naples is the only book in English on the architecture of medieval Naples, and it's a wonderful read. These churches - Sta. Chiara, San Lorenzo, the Cathedral (among others) are only a few of the impressive buildings of the ancient center of this marvelous city. With excellent illustrations, groundplans, and reconstructions, the author unravels the sometimes complicated stories of these beautiful buildings in relation to the topography of what may be the oldest city in Europe.

      Book Description

This book presents the principles and the tools for participatory evaluation of sustainable development--growth that does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It is intended for any citizen or group that may be concerned with protecting or recovering a cultural heritage, assessing the impact of a project or of plans that impact an environment or ecosystem.

The authors describe participatory evaluation processes that will empower all interested "stakeholders"--anyone impacted by a proposed venture--to determine and control what is to be evaluated and how it is evaluated, to articulate and define their community’s vision, and to ensure that development plans meet their community’s needs sustainably.

Acknowledging that the specific concepts, challenges, opportunities, and circumstances surrounding sustainable development differ significantly from one place or group to another, the authors provide an adaptable framework for developing an evaluation plan, as well as the tools for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data. They explain how to use and communicate findings to ensure a full and appropriate debate about the issues, and finally how to implement the evaluation plan.

An important and practical book for anyone concerned with the impact of planning and development issues and who wants to ensure that all sectors of their community are given a voice in decisions that affect them.

5 out of 5 stars Evaluating Sustainable Development.......2004-05-14

Ukaga and Maser have constructed a book that helps organizations understand and implement power-filled evaluations.

This book helps us formulate project objectives that are specific, measurable and time bound and to formulate evaluation questions that are relevant to our objectives.

True to the ideals and integration of sustainable development, this work encourages participation by the masses and focuses on economic, environmental and community quality in a simultaneous and interlocking manner. The authors acknowledge the inherent complexity of sustainability and offer methods that reduce the intimidation of a complex working environment.

The authors apply the concepts and practice of evaluation to all temporal stages of program management. Their evaluation processes ask us whether we should start a project, how it's working, whether we should change its course, and whether it is accomplishing it's goals and objectives. They advocate ferreting out current values and conditions as a precursor to evaluation. This provides a baseline or starting point; so people can set goals for getting to an even better place, and effectively measure their progress toward that future place. In their model, a baseline description of a community, culture and organization is preparatory step toward crafting an evaluation of community stability and sustainability.

They show us how to take our people beyond the usual drudgery and isolation of evaluation process, using the process to facilitate decisions, demonstrate accountability, enhance relationships and support planning. They make it critical for stakeholders to play active roles in evaluation of sustainable development so the challenges, opportunities and circumstances of their world are represented therein. This form of participatory evaluation is a precursor to participatory decision-making. The involvement of advocates in evaluation of their own programs makes them the best judges of its success.

This book has broad application. Ukaga and Maser have grounded their recommendations in their respective practices - from Minnesota to Nigeria. It offers evaluation methods for sustainability on both global and local scales; for those addressing immediate problems of survival and development in non-industrialized countries, and for those involved in large organizations and industrialized nations.

        Book Description

In this far-ranging and innovative study Christopher Berry explores the meanings and ramifications of the idea of luxury. Insights from political theory, philosophy and intellectual history are utilised in a sophisticated conceptual analysis that is complemented by a series of specific historical investigations. Dr. Berry suggests that the value attached to luxury is a crucial component in any society's self-understanding, and shows how luxury has changed from being essentially a negative term, threatening social virtue, to a guileless ploy supporting consumption. His analytic focus upon the interplay between the notions of need and desire suggests that luxuries fall into four categories--sustenance, shelter, clothing and leisure--and these are exemplified in sources as diverse as classical philosophy and contemporary advertising.

              Book Description

Flexibility has become a key concept in discourses on developments in working life. However, it is an ambiguous concept in several ways, and theoretical clarity is lacking. Further, large parts of the literature are prescriptive and ideological rather than empirical and analytical. This book contributes both theoretically and empirically to expound the importance of clearer concepts in the national and international debates on economic systems, labour markets, work organisations, and experiences of work.

                Book Description

California's storied Gold Rush triggered momentous changes not only for the state, but also for the nation and the world. The economic impact of that epoch-making event is the focus of the second volume of the California History Sesquicentennial Series. The chapter contributors offer a range of perspectives, including commentaries that reflect the new scholarship of environmental and resource history. Together, the essays and more than 90 illustrations show how the Gold Rush precipitated a veritable economic revolution whose effects continue to this day.
Among the topics given a fresh interpretation are the relationship between technology and society; the environmental impact from mining and the sudden increase in California's population; the influence of the Gold Rush on agriculture, manufacturing, banking, and transportation; and its impact on the peoples and economies of Latin America, Europe, and Asia. The popular image of the independent prospector is also examined anew, as is the role of different groups of industrial workers, including Chinese, Mexicans, and women.
The Gold Rush was a multiplier, an event that accelerated a chain of interrelated consequences that in turn accelerated economic growth. But it also touched a deep-seated nerve in the human psyche and unleashed economic forces, for good or ill, that transformed California forever into a Golden State.

5 out of 5 stars The best short essay work I have seen on this subject.......2000-01-02

In line with much of the new non-fiction surveys and studies, the book, in short essays gives the picture on much information that I have not seen before on the Gold Rush and the aftermath. In particular it gives a reader a chance to compare the Internet investment frenzy with the Gold Mine stocks frenzy in the 1860s & 70s.

The information is concise and beautifully and fascinatingly written.

Hackney, now a borough in London's East End, began as several small settlements in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Due to its close proximity to London, the parish became a fashionable retreat for the wealthy in the area, including aldermen, nobles, courtiers, and eventually, Bank of

Offering a comprehensive examination of Hackney's history, the work then describes the canals, railways, factories, and working-class tenements that grew in Hackney during the nineteenth

Drastic demographic changes and the spread of public housing developments have left Hackney ridden with poverty in the 1990s, but the author sees hope for the borough in the beginnings of renewed gentrification. Book Description

A successful painter and sculptor living in a woodland studio, Linda Johns has become widely known as the "Bird Lady" for her work in rescuing and caring for birds and other wildlife. She began by taking in the occasional wounded or orphaned bird that came her way; today she shares her home with an ever-shifting population of birds and other creatures, some of whom have moved in to stay.
In A Feathered Family, Johns writes lyrically about the natural world around her studio. Enhanced by the author's drawings of many of her avian housemates, this charming book is a must-read for all wildlife lovers.

One of my favorite genres of books these days includes the memoirs of people who share their lives with formerly-wild animals. I've got a Listmania list going, in fact, and I'll be including this book on that list just as soon as I finish this review.

This book definitely rates among the better books of that genre. The author shares her home with a variety of birds, including pigeons, roosters, a quail, and many others. She is known in her area for her knowledge of wild birds and their illnesses, so she frequently takes in and tends to injured birds brought by neighbors.

Her stories of these birds, both the type that come to her for brief convalescence, as well as those who live with her permanently, are very charming and sweet. The stories are made more fun by the lovely illustrations that accompany the stories, and which were rendered by the author herself. You'll be in love with Bubble and Squeak and Basho right away, no doubt.

I suppose I must admit I did not especially care for the passages where the author waxes philosophical. This genre of memoir seems almost of necessity to include alternating chapters of this sort, and I almost invariably find them tedious and I always find them meandering. So I wind up skimming, as I did here.

Also, the author's love affair with adverbs was distracting. Things never just happened, they happened "gingerly" or "insistently". Which is fine but if it happens so much that I start noticing it, then it's too much.

Having said all that, this author has some chops and spins a lovely yarn.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining reading for all bird and wildlife enthusiasts.......2001-03-14

Linda Jones is an accomplished painter and sculptor who lives in a woodland studio and became widely known as the "Bird Lady" because of her work in rescuing and caring for birds and other wildlife. She began by tending the occasional wounded or orphaned bird that came her way and today shares her home with an ever-shifting population of birds and other creatures -- some of whom having moved in to stay! In A Feathered Family: Nature Notes From A Woodland Studio, Linda Johns writes lyrically and engagingly about the natural world around her studio and the feathered characters who visit her and who share her home. With a natural talent for storytelling, Johns regales the reader with funny, affectionate stories enhanced with her drawings of avian house mates. A Feathered Family is enthusiastically recommended and entertaining reading for all bird and wildlife enthusiasts.

I started reading this book for my job, which means I didn't have any expectations. Boy, was I in for a surprise. Linda Johns' writing is a perfect winter read since her lyrical prose is like a warm blanket. She invites you into her world of rural simplicity without any presumptions and introduces you to her feathered family of roosters, pigeons, quails, robins, blue jays and who ever else happens to fly in and out of those pages. Yet Johns doesn't concentrate solely on the birds in her life, she also speaks of the harmonious connection she has with the lanscape around her and the significance of time and seasons. Her life and writing is like a magical dream and she has the rare talent on offering that feeling to her readers. I know this book is great since I would rather sit with a cup of hot apple cider and read than watch any prime-time television shows.
