Great guide for great lighting.......2007-03-29

In a few words, this book is a must read for begginers and proffesional individuals that find themselves quite lost within the vast challenges of visual arts.It is a great guide for capturing great lighting into film,video or any other medium. Mr.Ross Lowell has set some high standards and has created numerous great lighting techniques, which shares with us, inside his well organised book.
My only comment will reffer to the small print in the letters of the book.

One of my favorite lighting books!.......2007-02-17

Let me say up front that I view the book from the prospective of a photographer, though it does cover film and video lighting also. This book is an easy read and offers a great balance technical information and practical applications of technique. The exercises presented at the end of the book work well to illustrate many of the lessons in previous chapters and show the reader first-hand the subtleties of lighting technique. "Matters of Light & Depth" is in my top ten favorite photography books along with "Creative Still Life Photography" By Bruce Pendleton, and "Learning to Light: Easy and Affordable Techniques for the Photographer" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz

Great book on lighting.......2007-02-09

It is wonderful book on lighting with lot of practical advice. I very much liked the descripion of geting started with lighting - by standing where you plan to place the light and imagine what a hard light would do and a soft light would do from that position and place light based on that visualization. Also, the chapter on 'Method lighting' is very interesting.

Excellent Survey & Starting Point.......2007-01-04

This is a great starter book to get if you have never done any lighting before - whether for video, cinema, or still photography. Lots of great tips and tricks that typically are missing from other lighting books. Lowell takes the concepts and precepts of lighting and presents them in abstract form so that you can adapt them to whatever lighting situation you may have. This book may not work for you if you are the kind of person who needs step by step how-to in order to get things done - in fact it is debatable that ANY book could do so effectively because every shoot is unique. But if you are good at thinking intuitively and abstractly then his presentation of the material is great because it teaches principals (with some examples) and not technique.
My one complaint is the typsetting of the book. The use of a modern typeface makes reading difficult (looks like a bodoni variant). The publishers should really re-publish the book to make it more legible.

depth of the matter is...........2006-03-10

this is one of those quick fix reads to get when you feel a little burned out from your j.o.b. and need a pick me up. I opened this book and instantly started to remember stuff I learned years ago or even when I started doing this. With the combination of remembering and going through this book I started to get the creative bug again. It's hard to believe I already know most of the matterial in the book, until it is in front of me in text. This book is a huge "block" breaker. Get it.

This study examines fundamental theoretical and conceptual issues of social change in Latin America in the context of detailed empirical analysis. A mish-mash of brilliance.......2002-05-10

I own an older version of this, with the Henry More sculpture on the cover. A collection of lectures, altered for book form. Kind of a messy format but not as polemical as the more popular The Politics of Experience.

Notable for some very obvious but otherwise-by-others neglected observations: standard doctors are called in to intervene in medical emergencies; psychiatrists are called in to intervene in social crises PRESUMED to be caused by medical emergencies. What's endearingly called the medical model is not some magical talisman kept in a velvet case until use; it's the set of procedures in which all doctors are trained. Laing just believed it was inadequate when applied to social situations, ones in which some ONE is the problem & if that some ONE "gets right," everything'll be OK.

Whether you believe that a real medical malady called mental illness has a genuine pathological etiology that can be diagnosed & treated, the fact remains that one gets diagonsed on the basis of conduct & not on the basis of that medical malady.

As in the much better-formatted "Sanity, Madness & Family," Laing shows us that once we see what people in those situations are trying to do & what they're succeeding at doing, it's difficult to understand why any one person in that situation gets diagnosed at all.

Ya right your a what? A psychologist?.......2001-06-17

I could never get this book. It took my twenty years of reading the Divided Self to fully understand this author. This book was also titled the bird of paradise, but is not the book the other reviewer thought it was, that was also a book by RD Laing but with another author and also had the word *family* in the title. This book originally was not like an accounting of families but philosophical and psychiatric speculation. This book is all fine for someone studying psychology or psychiatry but for fellow consumers of mental health or their families I would say avoid this rather weighty tome.

Empirical and positivistic.......2000-08-15

This book is strange of his writings. It is composed simply of interviews about patients and their families. These interviews were recorded by the tape recorders or the hidden observers. It's all of this book. All conversations or their situations, however, talk something important to us silently. No theoretical comments are added, but only the fact. Let the theoretical considerations trusted to others in other places. By understanding the malicious situations of the patients, it will show us the important method of the observation about our unconscious situations of conflicts.

Politics breeds corruption and Feith and his cronies embody how they are corrupting not just the US but also having negative impact on the world. This book brings this to the forefront in just 134 pages but does it so well. If you didn't know how we're being "done" over welcome to the entrance of a rather large and winding rabbit hole.
