The title is misleading but the book may still prove useful........2002-11-17

If what you want to learn are the steps to being able to develop and print your own black and white images, then only Part III of this book will be of interest to you. Parts I and II delve into the rudimentary basics of photography in general such as choosing a lens and camera, what medium and large format is, taking people pictures, etc..

In this sense, the book can be considered a basic introduction to photography in general. It is not specialized to black and white photography as the title implies. If you already have the basics of taking pictures and just want to learn the best methods to begin developing and printing your own black and white prints, skip this book. It will repeat a lot of what you already know.

However, if you are truly a beginner photographer and want a good overview, with some information on doing black and white photography thrown in, this book may be just the book for you.

I find the title misleading in that the sections on black and white photography are minimal in comparison to the sections on the basics of photography in general.

Today's academic economists have, for the most part, withdrawn from "the parochial fray of local economic development policy" in pursuit analyzing broader national and international issues. Not so, says Thomas Michael Power, whose intent in his scholarly and deeply felt Lost Landscapes and Failed Economies is to address the fundamental errors and distractions inherent in folk economics. Power is uniquely suited to the task. A professor at the University of Montana, his is the perfect perch from which to regard the rapacious plunder of local and state economies by the mining and timber companies.

"A popular folk economics," Power writes, "teaches us that the extraction and processing of natural resources are the heart of economic development, that 'all wealth springs from the earth.'" Power argues against this conventional model of extractive-dependent communities. Such models play a role, he proves, in the decline and destabilization of local economies. To see landscape and its preservation not as an aesthetic whim but as an economic necessity is a brave and lonely stance, indeed. Economic health equals nothing less than "avoiding needless damage to the natural--and therefore human--environment."

We recognize the battle lines, clearly drawn between the environmental and resource-industry sides. At stake: both the extinction of whole species and traditional ways of life that have supported families and communities for generations. "If we could lay to rest," Power argues, "the fear that environmental protection will cause the imminent economic collapse of communities, the acrimony would subside and it would be much easier to engage in civil discourse over the real choices communities face." With a persuasive overview and the use of powerful case studies on the impact of ranching, mining, and timber on the land, Thomas Power has himself extracted a clear definition of the real issues from the rubble of misguided passions, paranoia, and a divisive media.

Yet at the same time, conflict over environmental issues has built to a point where rational discussion is often impossible. The mineral economies comprise approximately one-fifth of developing countries. They face special problems in achieving sustainable development, and have as a group been less successful than resource-deficient neighbours. This book examines the apparent paradox, detailing the current problems facing the mineral economies and the future policies necessary to overcome these problems. Nine countries are studied: Botswana, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Jamaica, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. The authors argue that the key factor is not the sustainability of the mineral production that initially generates growth, but the maintenance of the economic and social conditions for sustaining that growth. They draw upon recent progress in environmental and natural resource accounting to show how this can be achieved, and also assess the socio-political factors that often constrain sustainable development.

I thought this book was inspirational; a glimpse into the lives of people that you never get in your daily life. I think Kathy Dawson has a wonderful way with words, and can make what could be a mundane life appear interesting and important. I don't think it was supposed to be an in-depth novella exposing the innermost lives of each couple; I believe it was written with the intention of bringing a relationship to life for the reader. A certain amount of privacy had to be maintained, I imagine. As a journalist myself I can appreciate this.
I enjoyed the photographs, which helped me to envision each couple; I thought they were very creative and well done. We could use a book like this down here Dallas way.

Saccharine Isn't As Sweet.......2004-10-15

I've met and respected the Beers for a number of years. Their story is an inspiration. That being said one half of two other couples chronicled in the book worked with me at a local television station. (One has since moved on hint hint) Let's just say that to use the term "glossed over" is putting it mildly. If you want cute little stories that make you feel warm and fuzzy then by all means buy the book. If on the other hand you want to feel like you really got to know the couples featured forget about it. My significant other thought it was "romantic" especially since there were coworkers involved. Yuck! Rent a chick flick instead and save the $ difference. At least then you know you're ingesting fiction.

You need not be from Cleveland or even Ohio to be touched by Kathy Dawson's collection of 40 heartwarming stories.

Mary Lou and Jim Beers may start out as strangers to you, but after reading the few pages that chronicle their love through times of illness and uncertainty, you will feel you know them personally. The Beers' and the other 39 couples profiled in Kathy Dawson's book open their lives to the reader in ways that are both moving and inspiring. Ms. Dawson obviously has a gift for connecting with people and encouraging them to share thoughtfully and candidly.

You may choose to devour this book in one sitting or nibble on it one story at a time. No matter your approach, you will be glad you took the time to get to know these "Cleveland Couples."
