Filmmakers and videographers must know and understand hundreds of terms to survive in the competitive world of motion picture and television production. This invaluable reference clearly defines and illustrates more than 1000 of the most commonly used terms and phrases.
Explained are instruments and accessories such as the C-stand, brute, silver bullet, and bazooka; techniques such as the 'right-hand rule' and the blue-screen process; technical concepts such as the inverse square law and light colour temperature;
colourful phrases such as 'beach it', 'shake 'em up', and 'martini shot'; and other popular neologisms often devised by bored grips waiting for the next shot - terms such as sputnik, quacker, branchaloris, and flying moon. Various lighting fixtures and accessories are featured in 70 photographs and illustrations. Far more accessible and readable than most technical books devoted to lighting, Lighting Terms and Concepts contains all of the terms that cinematographers, lighting directors, camera operators and assistants, gaffers, electricians, and grips may encounter during a typical day on the set.

Book Description
* shows how to make markets really work
* reduces dependence on donor agencies
* illustrates critical issues, new findings and radical changes with a wealth of wide-ranging material
* key title for all BDS practitioners
In the last 20 years, microfinance has made it possible for the first time for poor people to access reasonably priced financial services. More recently, another related revolution has started, which may have the potential to be equally dramatic. Small enterprises not only need credit --they also need many other services: training, advice, marketing, supplies, premises, accountancy, materials, technology and many others. Without them, credit alone may do no more than add the burden of debt to all the other problems entrepreneurs have to face.
Governments and foreign donors have traditionally responded to these needs by trying to provide the services themselves. Despite -- or because of -- heavy subsidies, these services have been inadequate and of poor quality, and their main effect has been to ‘crowd out’ potentially more effective private suppliers. But policy makers are now learning that entrepreneurs are willing to pay the market price for quality services, and that small businesses -- in the private sector -- are the best source of services for other small businesses. The goal is to make markets work -- in business services as well as in other products.
The editor has selected seventeen chapters to illustrate the radical changes that have taken place in the evolution of assistance to small businesses. His introduction shows how the transformation has been inspired by the evolution of microfinance, and illustrates some of the critical issues which are facing business development practitioners today.

Book Description
This book is a collection of fascinating articles on the Soviet economy by an eminent economist. Most were written as current commentaries and were meant to report and to interpret developments in the Soviet economy under Gorbachev more or less as they occurred. Hanson's reflections cover more than particular events or a particular Soviet debate. In general, the articles were written for readers who were not necessarily either economists or Sovietologists, and they offer important insight on the ongoing transition of the Soviet economy to a free market economy.

A fresh new way of looking at the tech industry........2001-06-04
Every potential entrepreneur should read this book, it compares the similarities of building a business vs cultivating. Very enlightening and uplifting. The author founded a software company her self and has done several other occupations and has become quite wealthy doing so.
Lacking Clarity.......1999-10-22
After reading this book, one is left to wonder which was the true passion. Founding a software company, growing grapes, or writing a book? Enlightening - given the status of all three.

Book Description
The innovative and creative games in Learning to Play, Playing to Learn foster social skills to help young people deal with conflict without resorting to violence. It guides parents and educators in helping children identify their own set of values and feelings while playing with others. It also discusses several ways to modify popular games to encourage fairness and trust in children and encourages the use of healthy play techniques to increase self-esteem, cooperation, personal responsibility, and emotional and physical health.
Customer Reviews:
This book promotes peace in our schools and communities........1998-07-09
All schools should adopt the principles and rules so clearly discussed in this book. The simplicity of the "Healthy Play" program is its beauty and the reason for its success. Mr. Steffens and Mr. Gorin present valid arguments why schools should change from aggressive and competitive game-playing to activities that promote sharing, caring and compromise. Almost every game found in this book that I have tried out on my students has been met with enthusiasm. Their faces and giggles and body language have told me that the game provided a balance of challenge and enjoyment. The index is organized so that appropriate games can easily be found no matter the goal desired. As a teacher who deals with some very aggressive and angry children, I would like to personally thank these two gentlemen for a very useful plan that has allowed my students and I to experience positive community building.
Book Description
Reichmarschall Hermann Goring's Luftwaffe was the most pro-Nazi of the three services. As well as aviation units, the Luftwaffe included airborne forces and units of ground troops. The Luftwaffe was at the forefront of the dramatic German Blitzkrieg successes of the early part of the war, with dive-bombers working in close cooperation with armored units on the ground. As the tide of the war turned, the Luftwaffe was unsuccessful in preventing the destruction of German cities and industry by Allied bombers, despite the development of a highly effective night-fighter force. The latter years of the war saw the development of new, technologically advanced aircraft that were light years ahead of anything the Allies were considering, such as jet fighters, rocket-propelled aircraft, 'flying wings' and many others. As well as examining the Luftwaffe's organization and command structure, strategy, tactics, research and development, Gordon Williamson provides brief biographies of its most important figures, from field marshals to individual fighter pilots. He also surveys key aircraft types, uniforms and insignia to provide a comprehensive summary of the Luftwaffe in action between 1935 and 1945.

Luftwaffe Handbook 1939-45.......2001-04-21
Any student of the Luftwaffe should have this book. Within it's 111 pages, you will find a wealth of information regarding several aspects of the luftwaffe. Areas covered include, The high command, the flying units, the fighter force, the bomber force, Airborne assault operations, pilot training, the flak arm, the fieseler flying bomb, biographies of senior commanders, aircraft unit identification markings, and rank insignia. Several B&W photos, line drawings, diagrams, and maps all add to this overview of luftwaffe operations. The only reason I rated it at three stars is the lack of any color in the book's many Illustrations. If it contained any color profiles of luftwaffe aircraft, I would have rated it at five stars.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful to someone moving south.......2007-07-13
I moved to Georgia 14 years ago, from Vermont. Talk about climate shock! I found THE BIRD GARDEN to be quite helpful in getting me started in Zone 7. It is certainly not a completely comprehensive book, nor does it pretend to be. The sketches of sample bird gardens based on the varying climate areas of the USA gave me an easy to follow template for turning my yard into a bird and butterfly sanctuary. The year I had twenty-six chrysalises on the side of my house, I knew I'd done something right. Creating a bird garden, after all, cannot help but benefit the other welcome species, too.
My (indoor) cats and I love bird-watching now.
Disappointingly sketchy.......2003-01-16
Steve Kress is a great ornithologist and I greatly admire the work he's done in wildlife species and habitat preservation--but this book is not one of his best achievements. Basic and sketchy, at best it might give you a few ideas, but you won't be able to really implement them from this book--you'll have to get much better and more complete references. Look on the audabon web site or other birdwatchers web sites for ideas, and donate the money you save from not buying this book to audabon.
Bring beauty and life to the garden!.......2002-05-11
As an avid gardener with an extensive collection of gardening and reference books, this is the most cherished and most consulted of any book in the house. It brings the garden to an interactive level and a site of much learning for adults and children! Inspiring and informative, The Bird Garden also carries the endearing beauty of presentation one would expect with an Audubon Society publication. Wonderful gift for gardener or birder alike. I keep a few copies on hand for birthdays and house-presents. Finally, with enough inspired souls...the birds and butterflies will stand a better chance in the world. Read all about it!
Hatch your bird garden using this book!.......2002-04-30
I have used this book in the winter and the spring of 2002, and the results have been more than I could have expected. The book is well written, nicely illustrated, and well organized. If you want to have one reference book on hand, then you would be wise to consider this one.
If you only buy one book on the subject..........2002-01-30
Make it this one. It's full of detailed information on all aspects of creating a garden that will attract birds. It's well written and clearly illustrated.
Book Description
Produced in association with the National Audubon Society, the North American Birdfeeder Guide covers the best ways to attract, observe, and feed birds in your own backyard. From profiles of individual species to understanding bird behavior, this is the only book you'll need to master the art of bird watching.
Customer Reviews:
Not Your Typical Field Guide.......2007-06-19
The layout is certainly different and it's a hardback for one. I own several other National Audubon Society field guides and somewhat expected this book to resemble them. Even though it does not I have still been quite pleased with it. I bought it to give as a gift but I still have it. I like it enough it's been difficult to part with. I'm sure my guilt will some day surpass my greed and I will feel compelled to finally give it up. I have already learned quite a bit from this book like some of the Latin scientific species names. I would recommend this book to anyone with a bird feeder or anyone, who like me, finds themselves gazing out at the yard and watching nature.
Great Book.......2006-08-23
This book tells the bird lover everything they need to know about birds. even what kind of plants they like. I am very pleased with it.
Book Description
"Improving the quality of land for wildlife is the single most constructive step that anyone can take to assist wild bird populations. Happily, it is well within almost everyone's capability to improve bird habitats by providing important food and cover plants. Through this book, I will assist caring landowners and managers of properties ranging in size from urban balconies and suburban backyards to larger properties such as country estates, schoolyards, cemeteries, corporate parks, airports, golf courses, wildlife refuges, and parklands of all sizes. Managers of agricultural land, greenways, and vacant lots alike will find inspiration and techniques within these pages that will help them carry out the urgent and satisfying work of improving land for wild birds."--from the Introduction
In a book long awaited by landscapers, birders, gardeners, and naturalists, Stephen W. Kress provides a practical, comprehensive, and thoroughly illustrated guide to attracting birds to any property, be it a small patch of land in the city or a showplace countryside garden, a median strip or an expansive woodlot, a commercial building or a community park. In Kress's view, the best way to attract birds is to enrich habitats by improving vegetation, natural foods, water supplies, and nest sites.
Drawing on decades of experience, Kress offers a remarkable variety of techniques and resources for habitat improvement. In this book, he
* addresses the special needs of managers of large properties, giving them a toolbox of strategies for habitat restoration;
* organizes his suggestions by habitat type, such as forest, grasslands, and shrublands;
* offers advice for selecting native plants by region;
* details the importance of wetland conservation;
* discusses the safe use of pesticides and fertilizers;
* provides useful information on nesting structures and feeding stations; and
* lists plant vendors and print and online resources for further study.
Throughout, Kress emphasizes responsible environmental stewardship. The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds will help readers reach their goal of designing their own landscapes for the benefit of wild birds.
Customer Reviews:
It's all here.......2007-09-10
Very thorough reference for anyone looking to provide a backyard habitat for local birds. Things people as individuals can do. Plantings, feeds, birdhouses, it's all here. Writig style clear and consise.
The Backyard and Beyond for Birds.......2006-06-15
What I love most about this book is that it combines everything that a homeowner, landowner, bird watcher needs to attract birds to their surroundings. After collecting many different books on bird feeding, gardening for birds, landscaping for birds and managing land for birds, I am thrilled to be able to recommend a book that "has-it-all".
With chapters that address forest, grassland and shrubland management, a landowner will find thorough advice on how to look at their property and the larger surrounding landscape in terms of bird habitat. Kress does not ignore the homeowner's interest in creating a backyard sanctuary for birds either. Highlights include a wonderful list of bird attracting perennials and annuals, a plethora of bird feeder designs, and a chapter on healthy habits to exercise in your yard and neighborhood.
The book has plant, tree and shrub recommendations by region for the entire United States complimented simply by pen & ink drawings. The drawings are simple and meant to give the reader a visual of the leaves, fruits and general shape of the plant. This guide should not be used as a field guide to identifying plants, trees, shrubs or birds. This book is a "guide to attracting birds" and should not be used in place of a true field guide to birds or plants. The lengthy resource list in the appendix will help readers find those field guides needed for identification and much more.
As a conservation educator, I recommend this book for bird enthusiasts, naturalists, landowners and gardeners. It connects our love of birds with our passion for the land while encouraging responsible stewardship of the natural world around us.
Nearly Perfect.......2006-05-24
This book condenses from previous Audubon publications and adds a wealth of new information as well. While it is an impressive effort, I have to wonder why such crude illustrations? Especially when it comes to bird & plant identification. Anyway, the price of admission to Mr. Kress' writings is entirely worth it. Within a week I've attracted Orioles and Bluebirds....Amazing! I just wish the visuals were as clear as the writing.
