Porcelain was invented at the court of Saxony in 1718 which led some 25 years later to the establishment of the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg. The tradition of fine manufacturing established there continued through the Imperial and Soviet eras, but it was the demands of the factory's Imperial and aristocratic patrons in the 18th century that led to the wonderfully high artistic and technical standards that are still upheld today.

Description:
Repeat photography samples were used to analyze how the structure and site-specific distribution of forests may or may not have changed during the past century in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado. Systematic evaluation of 146 photosets was combined with field observations to identify trends in vegetation change. Both conifers and deciduous trees (e.g., aspen) have increased in extent. Forest recovery from large disturbances that occurred during Euro-American settlement contributed substantially to this increase. Trees also encroached into grass/shrublands, but less than half of photosets show tree invasion, and invasion is more common in small grass/shrubland openings interspersed with forest than in large openings. Establishment of conifers into willow wetlands was common. Photosets show aspen regenerating along boundary edges of both self-replacing stands and seral stands, and persistence in many stands even in the presence of conifers. A visible trend towards the loss of native bunchgrasses and increases in less palatable species is documented in the photosets, and is a testimony to the ecological impacts of livestock grazing.

While Penelope Nuthatch imagines spending a wonderful day with her friend, his surprise initially disappoints her. Readers or listeners will cheer as she decides to have fun and not disappoint her friend. Gavril's wonderfully funny story and fine illustrations that tell the story as well will have children clamoring to have the story read again and again. For Hector and the Noisy Neighbor fans, look for Hector to appear in one of the scenes. Remember Hector love to read.

Grrreat!!.......2006-05-14

I purchased this book because I love the author's previous book, 'Hector and the Noisy Neighbor' which my 4 year old also loves. Penelope is a great character and the lesson of going with the flow after a disappointment is one even adults can learn from. My son wanted to read the book over and over when we first bought it. There are subtle jokes to keep parents entertained as well. Sometimes, I find myself reading the book when my son is not around! The illustrations are also very clever; my son loved Penelope's costume changes. If you look carefully you'll see some characters in the background from the 'Hector' book. I think anyone would enjoy it.

The first section contains extensive information on classification and biology of Chickadees,creepers, etc. It also contains magnificent color plates of the species covered with notes on identifying features of each species. The rest of the book contains detailed and comprehensive information on the range, habitat, breeding, migration, and distribution of each species. This is a must have book for the serious birder, ornithology students, educators, and researchers. What an indispensible reference book!!!!
