Book Description
The fascinating evolution of house forms from the Stone Age to the present. Part architecture, part history, and part anthropology, this encyclopedic book limns the rich story of housing around the world from the pre-urban dwellings of nomadic, semi-nomadic, and sedentary agricultural societies to today. It covers housing around the world and suggests solutions for modern housing problems based on historical precedents. 500 b/w line drawings.
Customer Reviews:
A passionate work.......2005-04-05
You don't need a lot of background in architecture to appreciate this wonderful book. Professor Schoenauer, who was emeritus professor of architecture at McGill University until his death in 2001, takes us on a guided tour of a huge number of different housing styles over a great expanse of time and in highly varied cultural contexts. He really makes you feel as if he has personally inspected all of the places he describes (though it hardly seems possible that anyone could have) and he does this without overburdening his reader with too many technical terms or requiring us to have a very profound understanding of why houses stand up. Perhaps what really makes the book alive is the author's own drawings--something like more than 500 line drawings of floor plans, cross-sections, elevation views, city plans, etc, etc, etc.
The book is divided into three major sections: The Pre-Urban House, the Oriental Urban House, and the Occidental Urban House. The first section divides housing into types by socio-economic/cultural organization which the author suggests is more or less evolutionary (though these types may be found simultaneously though distributed in space). The second section examines a very long span of time (but including in some cases the present) with detailed discussions of typical house designs in various periods in Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Islamic cultures. The final section is an historical treatment of developments in the West: the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the 19th century, and the 20th century are all treated in turn.
Now something about the style of the book. At first, I was a bit distracted by Professor Shoenauer's digressions on culture, anthropology, historical sidelights, etc., but after a bit I started looking forward to these as much as learning about the buildings themselves. Admittedly, he doesn't always use the most recent or varied sources for his historical treatments (for instance, his sections on the dissolution of the Roman Empire could, in my opinion, be improved). And yet, by buying this book you are obviously reading someone's life work--and life passion--someone who is really overflowing with ideas, committment, scholarship, and who has an incredibly detailed and varied knowledge of his subject.

Book Description
Using Germany as a focal point, this book asks whether foreign banks can solve the problems involved in creating a well-functioning market economy.
Customer Reviews:
Dynamics of banking transitions.......2002-02-09
I thought the book was interesting and well-written, especially for those of us who are not bankers or in the financial services industry. I gained a better understanding of the banking industry and its role in a market economy. Also, I gained more insight into the difficulties of transitioning from a "centrally planned" economy to a market one. Mr. Robins clearly sheds light on the economic, political, and, more importantly, social and cultural factors involved in the integration of the West and East Germany banking systems. And I think he raises pertinent questions that what works in one place does not necessarily work in another. I would agree with his assessment that some flexibility and customization are necessary. In short, I would recommend his book to anyone interested in the dynamics and challenges of global economics in the 21st century. Because one size definitely does not fit all.

This fifth edition of The Business Writer's Handbook consists of nearly 700 spiral-bound pages written with both business students and professionals in mind. (It is also available in a paper-bound version, but how nice to be able to lay the book flat on one's desk for ease of reference.) "Our focus," say the editors, "is on helping professionally oriented writers develop effective skills and strategies for communicating in a rapidly changing environment," and that they do. The entries, arranged alphabetically, are straightforward and to the point. Sandwiched between items addressing issues of English grammar and word usage are guides to writing résumés, resignation letters, and everything in between (e.g., abstracts, annual reports, e-mail, executive summaries, form letters, feasibility studies, memos, mission statements, proposals, and trade journal articles). Throughout the book, the point is made that good writing has a marked effect on business communications--a short, personal collection letter, for instance, "will usually motivate a customer to pay a bill faster than will a form letter." Since the book is written for the business professional, many of the usage and grammar issues are illustrated with business-related examples, but don't think that that means the book isn't any fun. Consider the first sentence in an entry for gobbledygook: "Gobbledygook is writing that suffers from an overdose of traits guaranteed to make it stuffy, pretentious, and wordy." --Jane Steinberg

Great Book if needed.......2007-01-04
I did not use this book during class as much as I thought I would, however I think it would be very beneficial for future use.
Constant Update.......2007-01-03
The authors keep current with common and popular business writing practices. Do they make/set the standards or reflect them? Business writing books abound in the marketplace. This one (or the companion Handbook of Technical Writing) needs to be on the desk of everyone who has to write memos or proposals or reports--next to a good dictionary and the Gregg Handbook.

Customer Reviews:
good book for some basic to some what advanced info.......2007-07-25
okay, i seen many dating/relationship books that are really terrible. i've read some books that made me laugh, i've avoided buying these books, most of the time i'll scan through them to see if theres anything good in them, there usually isn't. but this book is different. there was actually stuff in here that taught me something. there are some stuff in here about body language that i didn't know, and some stuff about how you are supposed to ask for things. i didn't realize that i was making a mistake about how i asked for numbers, i mean come on that is supposed to be simple right. but after i change my style i notice i was gettin more numbers. this stuff really works. it gives you some tips about how to tell if a girl is into you or not, advice on your opening line, and how to get a girl to chase you, not the other way around. granted there was some stuff in this book that i already knew, you'll probably experience the samething, but a lot of it is stuff i didn't know or stuff i've never thought about. all in all its a very good book, i would have given it 5 stars, but because of some of the elementry stuff hurt its overall value. i highly recomend this book for all the youngsters out there that are having lady trouble and to any guys out there lookin to improve their game.
Good Book for Quick Read and Beginners.......2006-10-04
This book is good for a quick read, yet left me a little disconcerted, as the author admits a divorce or two... So, what kind of women do you want to find? This book might help you find a certain type of woman. It seems like a book with a regular-guy bar scene type of target customer. If you are a regular guy who hangs at the bar this book may be perfect for you.
Yet, what kind of women do you meet at the bar? Will they stay loyal to you? Are they together people, who last for the long haul? Or how will you treat them, as you may be a drunk who acts without long-term consideration? The ideas in this book may help you, but they didn't inspire me too much. There was some very good information on initial contact. I guess it's a really good book for the beginner.
Women better look out.......2006-08-11
This book is pretty good. It's written in a straightforward, no-nonsense way. It gives a list of where you can meet women, read her body language and know what it means. Conversation, dating; its all covered. Most of it's commen sense stuff, but it made me think about it.
If you are looking for a book about how to pick up women and get laid tonight, this book IS NOT for you. It's for teaching men what they can do to keep women interested in them.
Being of the female persuasion, I highly recommend this book........2006-08-08
My best friend and I found this book in the garage of the house she and her friends were renting. We read it and had some good laughs over it, but we both loved it and agree that the author definitely knows his stuff. I've recommended it to a couple of guy friends so far. It's very engaging, concisely written, and has a wealth of information. I would recommend it not only to guys who are looking to date, but to any guy who wants to better understand women in general, or to girls who want to learn what exactly guys are watching for.
This is THE book for dating........2005-08-17
If you ever felt insecure around women, then this is the book for you! It was easy to read and really opened my eyes up to the possibilities around me. This book applies to you if you between 16 and 60. When I read it, the haze that I usually stumbled around in while trying to meet a woman cleared up and my confidence grew exponentially. I may not look like Tom Cruise, but I can now act with confidence wherever singles gather and meet. This is definitely a must read for anyone facing today's single scene.

Book Description
Of all the planes that flew in WW2, the 'Wooden Wonder' the two-engined Mosquito, or Mossie as it was affectionately called, was truly the most versatile and feared by the Germans. Fast and manoeuvrable, the Mossie was just as at home in the pathfinder role as she was as a fighter interceptor, particularly of V1s, as a night-fighter, low level bomber.
Mosquitopanik tells of the hugely successful war career of this much loved aeroplane that caught the public's and its pilots' imagination. Here we have gripping tales of action in the air thanks to the most meticulous research by a true enthusiast.

Book Description
Bringing together for the first time all of the birding sites in Asia, this handy guide advises new and frequent visitors to the continent on where to go for the best birdwatching. From Turkey to Thailand and India to Indonesia, the book contains the latest birding information and deals with over 250 sites in detail and many more in passing. It directs the reader quickly to sites containing the birds he or she wants to see and tells which countries support the best cross-sections. Strategic information concerning when to go, how many sites to visit, how to get there, and how much time to spend is presented in a straightforward, easy-to-use format. Over one hundred maps and fifty line drawings enliven the text.
Following a chapter on how to use the book, there is an introduction to the continent and its birds. The book then focuses on the countries, archipelagos, and islands. General introductions to each country are followed by site details, which include bird lists, a list of other wildlife present, if applicable, and the latest information on where to look for the best birds.
Customer Reviews:
Asia birding treasure chest.......2007-07-18
Many birders are familiar with Nigel Wheatley's excellent "Where to Watch Birds In ...." series. This is another excellent regional guide to the countries of Asia excluding Russia (covered in his "Where to Watch Birds in Europe and Russia"). This is the book I would go to first when deciding which country/countries to visit and then pick up a more specific book for site guides to that area once this book has helped you make that decision.
A total of about 260 sites (national parks areas, reserves, etc.) are covered in the book for all of Asia. For example Malaysia has 15 sites including such famous places as the Danum Valley and Fraser's hill. The section on Danum Valley is three and a half pages long including a detailed trail map from the field centre. The account begins with a brief description of the Danum Valley dipterocarp forest. The endemic species of the area are listed next followed by a list of "specialities", birds that are more easily found here than in most other areas of Malaysia. A list of other species of interest follows with more descriptions of the birding trails, the canopy walkway, and hints on night birding (for Large Frogmouth). Directions to Danum and local accommodations are also included and the account ends on the page with an enticing black and white drawing of Blue-headed Pitta.
The only reason I rated this at 4 rather than 5 stars is the published date of 1996. It would be nice to have an updated version but as I mentioned use this to make some decisions on your trip then follow up with more specific local guides and updates to reserves and lodging on the net. This is still wonderful to have in hand to peruse the possibilities of birding Asia.
Encyclopedia of Asian Birding.......2004-02-12
This is the ultimate reference on birding sites of the continent!
It gives coverage to every single Asian country including the Middle East (but not Russia), lists their endemic species with tips on where to see them, and describes the major birdwatching locations with species lists, basic maps, transport and accomodation info. Particularly useful for countries which aren't covered by separate guides.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed As Well.......2006-03-03
I have to concur with the first reviewer, this book was a big disappointment. I was looking for a resource that would allow me to identify mammals in the field. This book does not do that. If you have even the most rudimentary knowledge of animals (e.g. you can identify an elephant) then you can probably get by without this book.
The plates are few and of poor quality. Maybe the authors just tried to do too much, but the format leaves a lot to be desired and most of the material either needs to be removed or expanded upon (removal might be preferable: the 3 page list of what is on the 9 color plates is silly, a better index would work fine). While it is small and sturdy as a good field guide should be, the overall information probably won't help you much in identifying mammals. I saw three species of sheep in the Indian Himalaya and only one was listed in the guide. Similarly, I saw two species of pika and I am still not sure if they are the two described and illustrated.
I actually liked the section towards the back regarding where to look for animals. However, that this more of a reference or travel planning source, and it is only a brief overview at that. Allowing that it accounts for about 40% of the entire guide, it is a lot to carry around for little information.
The bottom line is that I would never carry this book into the field again.
Quite Disappointed.......2002-03-08
I found this book to be overall pretty disappointing. First off, the illustrations are horrible. They look like children's cartoon drawings. Why don't the editors of mammal-books hire the same artists who do bird guides? The latter are generally really good.
Secondly, there is a lot of important information lacking. For example the book states that it describes "almost all the species that can be identified in the field easily". I was hoping for a book to 'the mammals of the indian subcontinent' (ALL of them) not a book of 'the mammals of the indian subcontinent that can be easily identified'. The whole section at the end on 'Where to Watch mammals' is pretty useless. I'll get that info from the 'Lonely Planet', thanks. That space should have been spent instead on descriptions (and better illustrations) of more species.
Good field guide - bad entertainment.......2000-06-23
This book covers the land mammals of the Indian Subregion or in other words it cover: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. However, it also does exclude the smaller and often inconspicious mammals like baths, schrews, and most rodents. A number of small but often conspicious mammals are included. For instance both squirrels and pikas are included. In total it depicts and describes 106 species in deatail. It starts in the typical manner with an introduction to the region, mammals, and mammal observing. This section is highly usefull to the unexperienced reader, but will probably seem quite borring to most, as it is short and only mentiones the most bassal things. The next fourty pages is devoted to the mammal species themselves. This means that there is 2-3 species per page. About each species the book descibes identification, habitat, range (no range maps!), behavior, diet, breeding, status, and similar species. The text is not for pleasure reading, but it is highly usefull in the field. A thing to remember - not mentioned in the book - is that the status refers to subregion only, not the intire world. An example is the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) which is described as endangered. The next pages are assigned to 12 colour plates with drawings of the mammals. The drawings are not especialy beautiful, but all the important details usefull in identification are remembered. The next 12 plates are devoted to animal tracks. The last third of the book describes 23 national parks/reserves in the region including the famous Chitwan NP and Sunderbars NP. These pages are the highlight of the book. In this part there is a map of each park and a quite thorrow descibtion of acces, accomodation facilities, season to go there, larger mammals of the area etc. Sadly similar chapters in other books have been shown to go quickly out of date. At the end of the book there is a chapter called "futher reading" which obviously seems equal to bibliograpy.
In total the book seems to be good in the field, but there are quite a few large lacks. For instance a number of large species known in the area are not mentioned at all. An example is the Toque Macaque (Macaca sinica). The Slender Lori (Loris tardigrandus) is mentioned only briefly in "similar species" of the Slow Lori ( Nycticebus coucang). This seems strange as the Slende lori occurs in a much larger part of the subregion. Sadley this is also a fact with a number of other species. They also use a number of outdated latin names. An example is the use of the genus Felis for all the smaller cats. In the beginning of the book they mention that the reason for the use of "old names" is because they are more familiar to people! But they are still incorrect in my opinion (I know other people don't find them to be so). It is however still a very good and usefull companion when watching wildlife in the region.
