Eastern North Carolina boasts some of the oldest and most distinctive architecture in the state, from colonial churches and antebellum plantation houses to the imperiled lighthouses of the late nineteenth century. The more recent history of this predominantly agricultural region includes landscapes of small farmsteads, country churches, factories, tobacco barns, quiet maritime villages, and market towns. In their guide to this rich and diverse architectural heritage, Catherine Bishir and Michael Southern introduce readers to more than 1,700 buildings in forty-one counties from the coast to Interstate 95. Written for travelers and residents alike, the book emphasizes buildings visible from the road and indicates which sites are open to the public.

Featuring more than 400 photographs and 30 maps, the guide is organized by counties, which are grouped geographically. Sections typically begin with the county seat and work outward with concise entries that treat notable buildings, neighborhoods, and communities. The text highlights key architectural features and trends and relates buildings to the local and regional histories they represent.

A project of the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office of the Division of Archives and History, the book reflects more than twenty-five years of fieldwork and research in the agency's statewide architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs. Two future volumes will cover western and piedmont North Carolina.

This book is exactly what its title suggests: It's a survey of HISTORIC architecture in eastern North Carolina, one of the richest concentrations of colonial, federal, and early Romantic architecture in the country. Eastern North Carolina is a feast for anyone who enjoys small coastal towns packed with historic churches and houses, small regional cities that aspired to metropoli but failed and are now preserved gems of early 20th century urban architecture, and rural plantations off the beaten path just waiting for that late afternoon thunderstorm. This book, along with its two equally good companion volumes covering the Piedmont and West, is a joy to simply browse for a quick daydream or a resource to pour over as part of a larger research project. They're really that good.

In the world of architectural surveys, the variation in standards can be frustrating. Some are generally excellent, complete and (relatively) objective, while some are grossly incomplete or out of date. Some are packed with structures that have otherwise been demolished or destroyed (what's the point?). Some are so overstuffed with editorial political correctness and arcane archi-speak that they can't be enjoyed for the art itself. Also, some like to use what I call "iconoclastic postdating." That's the process by which an expert tells you the gorgeous old plantation house you thought was built in 1785 was REALLY built mostly after World War 2. It allows that expert to express the fact that he or she knows far more than you (and the general public) about such matters. If you've ever seen Antiques Roadshow, you know what I mean.

This guide, miraculously, resists ALL of these flaws. It is of the highest scholarly and editorial quality. There are no significant omissions to reveal the author's political or aesthetic bias. The summaries are concise and well researched. The coverage is truly exhaustive. The photographs are largely functional rather than artistic, but are well chosen to reveal the structures in entirety.

If you're a fan of architectural surveys, these are among the very best and every bit as good as Oxford's BUILDINGS OF AMERICA series. If you're a fan of rural and small-town historical architecture, these books are representative of the genre. Buy all three and you can carry historic North Carolina around with you in your briefcase or backpack.

While the root concepts explored in this book are somewhat relevant, the tone is bland and the info is quite out of date. The copyright is 2002 but the text was obviously written between 1991-92. There in no mention of the MLAT treaty which Switzerland has signed since this was published. Keep looking.

Outdated and not much info.......2004-03-03

Like Adam Starchild's book, "Swiss Money Secrets", this book does not mention any disadvantages or drawbacks of the subject - there are only advantages. Second of all, most of the information is outdated. Althought the book was published in 2002, nearly all the information came from 1992 or 1993. Falkayn is still talking about the "new" Clinton administration and is still describing the poor economy in the US - remember this is the early 90's.

He tells the reader how bad the American system is by how much debt the US has, how poor the quality of education is, the amount of poverty, their broken health care system, their illiteracy rate, etc. Faklayn then uses this to persuade the reader to invest in Switzerland. He describes the advantages of different Swiss investments such as annuities, bonds, and trusts, but does not really describe how to get involved in those investments. I am left as clueless about Swiss investments before reading this book as well as after reading the book.

The Best I have ever read on setting goals .......2006-03-13

The author challenges tradional ways of setting goals. He says that what we should do is set targets, like an archer. If you don't hit the bullseye at least you hit the target. No more room for discouragement and the reality that like goals they may change, but you can be encouraged that if you are aiming for the target and hit it, but not the bullseye, you are one step closer to your desired end.

Written in a dry and logical style, this informative and well researched book provides a university like thesis on a very interesting piece of corporate history. The book sticks to documented facts and fortunately avoids rash opinions and hysterical conclusions. The situation in which General Motors found themselves with the purchase of Opel just before the Nazis took power is still relevant today.

This book does not cover the different types of finches & softbills. It is very general information only, on breeding and care of finches & softbills, no help to the person wanting more specific info. on the different types of finches and their care.

I think this is a very good, detailed book for someone new to finches & softbills. At times, it flips back & forth between finches & softbills in a paragraph, which can be confusing for a novice, but it's easy to figure out. It has enough nice pictures to give a good overview of many species, but is not a "picture book" - it is for someone who is serious about the birds and their care. Early on it has a section of compatability which is useful and neccessary. It has a lot of details on aviary housing (many finch books do), and bird rooms, which isn't useful to the average home/apt. bird owner, but more information is better than too little. It is definitely a good resource book.

REVIEW - AUSTRALIAN FINCHES.......2007-01-11

The book is a good guide, available with suitable photographs.
However , a detailed feature on goldian finches , especially a chapter devoted exclusively to the breeding of gouldian finches would have been better. The book has enabled me to give the right light and shade conditions plus food supplements to finches. So far I have successfuly bred society finches and have even placed goldian eggs in society finches' nest.Results still awaited. But contrary to the fact that gouldians feed their first clutch , I wish to pinpoint that though a chick did hatch successfully from the initial clutch , the parent birds made no effort to look after it. This is in total contradiction to the details given in the book.
