Mindfulness has become a common religious buzzword. In A Home for the Soul award-winning architect Anthony Lawlor shows us how to decorate a home that encourages mindfulness from every bathroom and bibelot. Despite a (perhaps unavoidable) tendency toward camp and solipsism, the stunning photographs and insights into the potentially sacred details of domestic living prompt you to pay closer attention to your immediate environment. For example, "Books are like small altars, each page serving as a threshold for crossing into realms of broadened vision." Investing the items around us with soulful symbolism is like living in a temple of one's own design.

Book Description

Anthony Lawlor is known as the architect who brings soul to design. His acclaimed book The Temple in the House showed how to and the sacred in architecture. Now, in A Home for the Soul, he reveals how our houses and apartments can become havens of inspiration and renewal.

"From the moment we're born, we seek to find home." Lawlor says, "Yet, despite this primal longing, our dwelling places often disappoint us." In A Home for the Soul, we discover that the depth and meaning we seek is right in front of us if we but have the eyes to see. Lawlor teaches us how to develop a consciousness about the spiritual possibilities inherent in our interior surroundings; he shows how to recognize the sacred in material form. "Each time we bathe," says Lawlor, "we not only cleanse the body, we refresh the spirit. Each time we open our front door, we enter a universe of connection and signifcance."

Lawlor leads us on a journey through each room of the house, opening our vision to hidden possibilities. We discover, for example, how a stove expresses the transforming power of nature, how clothes closets reveal our inner personalities, and how home of        ces display our talents. Lawlor shows us the mythological and archetypal meanings within the common objects of daily life--such as a bed, a bathtub, a pair of shoes, or a loaf or bread.

The author also offers practical suggestions for arranging or building soulful homes. He explains how to use wood, tile, brick, and stone to express qualities of the spirit and how to use furniture and personal objects as allies in creating meaning.

Finally, Lawlor shows us how to construct a Mandala of the Soul--a wood cabinet with compartments for housing the symbols of home that have particular personal meanings for each reader.

In these pages, we come to understand how all the rooms we live in can form a sacred place of wholeness, a home that cares for and uplifts the totality of mind, body, and soul.

5 out of 5 stars A quick, helpful read, easily absorbed and it STAYS WITH YOU.......2006-12-13

Beautifully and intelligently written, this book is not another "how to hang a picture" or "the feng shui of sofa." Rather, it advises simple, practical ways of enjoying our surroundings and transforming home processes into meditations. It's not menial and tedious to do your dishes or dust once you've been enlightened. Chores become soul-satisfying ritual and enjoyable exercises in mindfulness. Lawlor helps you transcend mundane materialism and to thoroughly appreciate every minute you spend in your home. Aside from the beautifully written text and wonderful photography, YOU SHOULD BY THIS BOOK IF... you're deadly tired of housework drudgery and wish you could just be delighted by sunlight on your newly swept wood floors-- you no longer appreciate the fragrance and texture of freshly laundered terry towels-- your house is just a Mortgage Albatross around your neck-- you feel engulfed in belongings and are contemplating Great Grandpa's arrowhead collection for Goodwill-- you don't have time or energy for church or yoga--- REJOICE! This is YOUR book.

5 out of 5 stars This is not an interior design book. This is strictly for the Soul.......2006-10-24

This book is not for anyone who is looking for an interior design book. This book is strictly for the soul. We live in a world where we are in a rush to do everything. We rush to clean our homes, eat, bathe, etc. This book explains in detail what each room represents and how it aids in healing us within. Being in the moment of cleaning, cooking, cleansing, enjoying that cup of coffee in the morning, that sunset we take for granted. The joy of putting different elements in our homes and how it makes us feel within. Our home is a place for healing us within, rejuvenating us, that place to go for tranquility and get away from the madness. We have to stop regretting the past or worrying about the future and be in the moment. Doesn't matter how much money you have you can still create a place that you can truly enjoy and call a home. Get it "a home for the soul", not the body.

This book is a must have. As a result, I actually enjoy cleaning my home and no longer refer to it as a chore.

3 out of 5 stars For those without taste!.......2003-01-06

This book seems to be written for people that have no taste in interior design/arrangement. For them it gives lots of ideas but not enough photo's for my taste. Reading through the book I figured it had been written 20 years ago because of the way it looks, but it is actually a 1997 book. I think the author needs to read a book on how to make a book feel like it has some soul to it!

5 out of 5 stars Planning for a home, not a showcase.......2000-11-08

If you are looking for lots of ideas for floor plans, design or decorating ideas, this is not the book you want. If you are looking for a book that will help you create a space that feels like "home," this book will help you think about what that means in terms of your space.

Lawlor takes an unusual approach to his subject by first examining each living area with respect to the Greek gods typically responsible for that space. Before one dismisses this as a New Age thing, study the ideas behind the activities represented by that god. It's simply his "hook" to get the reader to continue on, to think about what this space is intended to do in the routine of life. As a storyteller, I was thrilled to read of his ideas for planning one's living area, which should be a space for stories, music and social interaction. He does not ignore the ever-present television, but he does suggest planning for lively, involved social interaction, which we all crave but often lack in our busy lives.

He does give general suggestions for room layouts if you are in the planning stages of construction, and closes each chapter with his vision of the ideal layout for that living area. He suggests materials, colors, furnishings and accents for each specific area, so that if you are looking to change existing space, you'll find that, too. Anyone who places a priority on books as a major furnishing component will win me over every time, but his vision of planning for a home, not a house, has appeal as well.

5 out of 5 stars Thus the difference between a house and a home........2000-04-13

Light a few candles. Put on the tea kettle. Find the most comfortable spot in your home and settle in. This book will transport you to the essence of your soul room-by-room. There are many ideas on how to turn your space into a nurturing nest, and not all fluff--many practical ideas that make a huge impact. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definitive text.......2006-06-29

This is the classic text on Chinese brush painting written by a British woman who studied in the traditional manner with Asian painting masters.

Her presentation is thorough (history, tools, technique, pedagogy) and she guides the student through the traditional first four "subjects" that are traditionally studied--the "Four Friends", i.e plum, bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum--in that order. Mastery of these four subjects thoroughly schools the students in the brushwork required in this style.

Even those who do not wish to paint in this style exclusively should study this work. Western style painting can only benefit from the exquisite sensitivity of brushstrokes disciplined in this tradition.

Francesco Nonino's Atmosphere shows us a spectacular series of clouds, that hang over tiny, but extremely detailed landscapes crowded with minute traces of the human presence. Buildings, roads, and people appear as dimensional references emphasizing the grandeur of the sky. The caption of each image reports the scientific name of the appearing cloud, thereby creating an intriguing mix of science and art, reason and emotion. This bok is part of a new series on young photographers called .

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars contemporary Italian artist's sharp photographs of skies and clouds.......2005-09-07

Valtorta titles her introductory essay aptly "The Skies of the Land." In Nonino's photographs--38 of them shown full-page on right-hand pages with titles on facing left-hand pages--the land has an inextricable connection to the sky; but not one of possession. Rather, the title means more something like the "lord of the land." For without the enveloping, expansive skies of the sharply-focused photographs, the persons, activities, buildings, and other parts of the scenes would not be. Despite the sharpness of the variously simple or multi-part foregrounds, the viewer's eye is drawn to the sky of each photograph. The sky dwarfs even mountain ranges in the background. The titles of the photographs are scientific names for the clouds in the skies; Cirrus fibratus, Cumulus mediocris, etc. The scientific preciseness of the photograph's titles and their clarity suggests no interpretation of them, no particular way of seeing them. It is by one's eye searching through them--attracted by the details which stand out, the cloud formations, and the endlessness of the sky--that one comes to an awareness of the "atmospheres" enveloping and pervading human life on earth. This is the first collection of Nonino's photography; which has been shown in solo and group exhibitions mostly in Italy and is a part of collections in Italy and France.

              Book Description

Challenging the view that managerialism is a form of capitalism and that capitalism has eclipsed socialism, Pena shows that the managerial or "new" class is an exploiting class. The work of Thorstein Veblen, James Burnham, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Kevin Phillips, he suggests, forms a little-known century-long tradition of reflection on the managerial revolution as well as on the conflux of values and socioeconomic practices that Pena dubs "economic barbarism." Building on the work of these thinkers, he argues that industrial barbarism and the managerial revolution led to the decline of U.S. capitalism and its replacement by managerialism, a form of nationalistic socialism in which educated white-collar personnel employed by the state and corporate bureaucracies have become a new exploiting class that receives the bulk of the national wealth. Thus managerialism replaced industrial barbarism with a new form of economic barbarism. This "managerial barbarism" has fostered an unequal distribution of wealth that has penalized the middle and lower classes with stagnant or declining incomes, growing job insecurity, unemployment, and underemployment. Unless managerialism can find a way out of persistent poverty and declining living-wage job opportunities, these problems are likely to continue afflicting a sizable portion of the population. If managers put an end to economic barbarism, they have a chance to create a society characterized by generalized prosperity, leisure, and opportunity. It is more likely, however, that economic barbarism will continue to be an integral part of managerialism and, consequently, managerialism will face a sudden social upheaval or a gradual decline.

                  Book Description

Robert March, author of The Japanese Negotiator, now critically examines the Japanese multinational company from the perspective of its non-Japanese employees in the United States, Japan and abroad. Against a background of growing Japanese investment overseas and simultaneously increasing concern about the qualifications of some Japanese companies as good employers abroad, March examines, through the actual experiences of their foreign employees, how the vastly different ideas of the Japanese about good management practice, corporate culture, harmony in the workplace, interpersonal communication, employment conditions, decision-making power for non-Japanese, and manager-subordinate relationships often lead to many real problems in the workplace, and sometimes escalate into an ultimate polarization between Japanese and non-Japanese personnel.

Using the successful approach of his earlier book (which Savvy Magazine called "an indispensable guide to the ins and outs of Japanese commerce"), March uses revealing testimony from foreign employees in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Asia to show how the Japanese really manage and direct their foreign employees, as well as to expose the roots of tension, misunderstanding, confusion, frustration and antagonism in the multinational Japanese company. A longtime student of Japanese corporate behavior who himself has many years of first-hand experience working for the Japanese in Japan and abroad, March in Working for a Japanese Company presents a comprehensive study of what it is really like to work for the Japanese--and the first guide to evaluating Japanese companies as employers. His skillful use of verbatim interview materials is combined with the interpretive approach of a cultural anthropologist who is completely at home in a business environment. Reading Working for a Japanese Company will transform your assumptions about Japanese companies and Japanese managers themselves. This essential work goes beyond stereotypes to offer truly new perspectives and insights on things Japanese in today's world of multinational business.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit.......2006-08-08

I am an American working for the top Japanese executives at a Japanese-owned company in the U.S. I landed this job due to 18 years prior experience working with the Japanese.

Many things have changed in the Japanese-American working atmosphere since this book was published in 1992. The younger Japanese are much more open, pro-American and savvy. And, at least in my company, the Japanese have made a great effort to apply "when in Rome." But still, with many older Japanese (50+) expatriates working in America, there can be cultural misunderstandings. I've personally experienced several embarrassing situations that might have been avoided if I had read this book earlier.

An unexpected part of my job has been as a liaison between the Japanese and Americans, fielding questions that the Americans have about the Japanese and visa versa. So, because of this book, I can better answer these questions, and my position here has therefore been gaining in value.

Author, Robert M. March, has done a great deal to improve international relations - this book would go far to help relationships anywhere. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to work for the Japanese.

Wadsworth does a thorough job of explaining what most of us think of as our typical goals--better job, bigger home, etc. A good, solid read that is accessible to more than just Ph.Ds. It's as good as Guerilla PR: Wired, which deals more with how to attain business goals. If you're interested in focusing more on business goals and not personal ones though, Guerilla PR: Wired is definitely the way to go.

I read Katherine Levine's Parents Are People Too: An Emotional Fitness Program for Parents. She is the new Spock. Reading her book was like having an experienced, learned grandmother (who just happens to be up on all the latest research in child development and psychology) help with the nitty-gritty of dealing with all the negative feelings and stress being a parent creates. Her site, www.emotionalfitnesstraining.com offers all kinds of help in addition to this book. It's a must-see!

                        Book Description

South Asians in Diaspora is a collection of essays concerning the history, politics, and anthropology of migration in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, as well as in the numerous overseas locations, such as Fiji, Africa, the Caribbean, and the US where South Asians migrated in the colonial period and after. It addresses the connections between migration, identity, and ethnic conflict from a comparative perspective, and highlights the role of share colonial experiences in producing "communal" solidarities and discord.
