While the title of this book suggests the obvious--that it deals with the houses and barns of the Amish--there is much more to it. After a cursory discussion of Amish architectural preferences, the author focuses on three Amish farms to give the reader a better sense of how Amish farmsteads and farming practices have evolved. These accounts are, however, largely genealogical. Overall, the book is very enlightening and informative; it is written in a clear and refreshingly lucid manner, and contains numerous black & white photographs of homes, farm buildings and equipment--and, in some cases, livestock. Truly a pleasure to read.

A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2007-04-14

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

She hopes to one day be able to pursue her writing career full time.

creative title - below par book.......2007-04-09

Valerie Senetha Miles has taken a creative title and turned it into a below par book. Although she provides incite into some of the extreem hardships to expect as an Army wife, her griping becomes excessive. She complains about struggles that nearly all people face regardless of their spouse's profession, such as doing dishes, avoiding weight gain, fighting traffic, and shopping within one's means. If Miles was a stronger, less materialistic individual and had written the book with a more positive outlook on life I think I would have enjoyed it.

Anything For A Buck.......2005-02-25

I was surprised by two things with the book. The first was the large number of spy's, or more accurately greedy unscrupulous people with high security jobs, that the book details. The second is just how dumb many of them were. The authors detail out the large number of spy's that have worked against the U.S., primarily during the 1970's and 1980's. The authors also give the reader a nice, but brief history of espionage against the U.S. and details of how many of the organizations that these people were part of. The reader also gets a nice look at the actual techniques that were used to both spy and catch the traitors. Again here I was surprised at just how lax the security procedures were that allowed so much damage. How people could walk out of the CIA and FBI daily with brief cases full of top secret documents is beyond me. Is there not a security guard that could be posted at the door?

I have read about many of the more notable spy's over the past 50 years, but I had not heard of maybe half of the people detailed in the book. You will be surprised at just how many people grab a few secret documents and head off to the local Russian embassy for the dirty version of lets make a deal. The fact that so many of these guys, yes most of them are men, get caught after only receiving a few thousand dollars speaks to the overall intelligence of these James Bond emulators. I mean these guys could have walked around with a blue wind breaker with yellow lettering that said SPY and they would have been less obvious then what many of them did. What concerned me was just how stupid many of the guys were, almost to the point of wondering how they even got their jobs in the first place. The reason this concerned me was if these are the guys getting caught maybe there are multitudes of competent spy's out there that we will never find out about. Also just how bad is our security that these intellectual duds were able to game the system and walk out of the building with the family treasures.

Overall I found the book well written and interesting. The authors were able to keep the pace of the book lively and limit the amount of dull overly detailed descriptions of legal proceedings. I found the book a rather large eye opener and would recommend it to anyone interested in national security or espionage. It also gave me more then one or two laughs at just how hapless these guys were. In some cases it was the key stone cops meet Tom Clancy.

The only real "catalog" of American traitors during Cold War.......2000-04-08

Roughly 100 American traitors, most of them within the U.S. defense establishment, are itemized in this book, the only such over-all review I have encountered. As I have said on several occasions that I believe we have at least 500-750 additional cases of espionage to discover, at least half of them controlled by our "allies", this book is for me a helpful reminder of the true pervasiveness of betrayal in a Nation where opportunism and financial gain often outweigh loyalty and principle.
