Arata Isozaki is the master architect of japan and he shows in this book that he has earned the title with his hard work. His book gives clear evidence of how he plasmated his dreams, which's limit is unknown, in his work. A must have for the architect of these days and for the interested architecture student.

Hijacking Environmentalism exposes the lack of commitment from business and industry to the challenge of sustainable development. Richard Welford demonstrates how modern business has ignored-even usurped-the wider ecological, ethical and social aspects of sustainable development. Industry has, in effect, hijacked the more radical environmental debate by taking it out of its traditional discourse, and placing it in a liberal-productivist frame of reference.

Welford examines the ways in which business executives have reconstructed the environmental agenda to pander to their own purposes. He then shows how businesses continue to operate outside the ecological carrying capacity of the environment, and that there remain strong underlying tensions involving conflicts between sustainable development and international trade. He shows how too much emphasis on hierarchical organizational structures stifle participation inside the organization.

The final part of the book examines the way forward for the more sustainable business. It presents new models of the sustainable organization which place greater emphasis on issues such as equity and ethics. It seeks an ecological awakening amongst business leaders and concludes with a call for more critical research on business activities, abandoning both the restrictive positivist and traditional interpretive paradigms of analysis.

The contributions in this book are best read as a set of related essays and each chapter can easily be read and understood in isolation. Hijacking Environmentalism is recommended for business leaders, management students and activists with environmental NGOs.

Richard Welford is Professor of Corporate Environmental Management and Director of the Centre for Corporate Environmental Management at the Huddersfield University Business School. He is also Professor of Sustainable Management at the Norwegian School of Management and a Director of ERP Environment. common sense.......2004-03-12

I suppose somewhere there might be someone who can benefit from this book, although I can't imagine they're old enough to have a job yet so they're going to be borrowing money from mom and dad to buy this. There are some pretty pictures explaining basic science of some health issues. A nice illustration of what an ingrown hair is, for instance. If you need a picture to understand that kind of thing. You'll also be taught the mysteries of how to floss, how to brush your teeth, how to cut your fingernails, and what body types can wear a double breasted suit.

Eventually the book makes it way to general issues of health -- prostate health, cancer, heart disease -- and things improve a little bit. Still not enough to make me think buying this book is worthwhile, though. Check it out from your local library and you can skim all the useful information in under an hour.

Great guide.......2006-09-06

This volume and the companion volume for southern Nevada make great guides for the 4WD explorer. The maps, which are very detailed (I only wish a foldout complete map were included) indicate every mining camp, settlement, even cemetary, as well as rating the roads as trails, 4WD necessary, or better. The maps also refer the reader to Paher's more detailed book on the ghost towns themselves, including appropriate page numbers. The maps are the heart of the book.

The photos, which besides the maps make up the balance of the book, are excellent but in many cases dated. In fact, there are numerous notes that this or that building or artifact is no longer in existence. This is useful, if sad, since the reader is likely an explorer of these sites as well, and will not want to waste time on driving to some remote site where everything of note has been looted or removed. Still, more current photos, or then-and-now photos, would have been desirable.

Regarding the text, there is very little - readers interested in the stories behind the towns need to get Paher's larger volume on the same subject.

Excellent map collection of northern Nevada ghost towns.......2006-01-23

This excellent book of maps is an addendum volume to Stanley Paher's superb NEVADA GHOST TOWNS AND MINING CAMPS, one of the best (and best selling) books on the state. It covers the northern part of the state (a second volume deals with southern Nevada and Death Valley). The maps are incredibly detailed and include all the ghost towns/mining camps in Paher's book and then some. In addition to the maps, many photographs of many of the sites are included, though most of them look no more recent than the 1950s (so visitors today should expect to see much less physical evidence than shown in the photos). This book is essential for anyone who plans to go "ghost hunting" in person, though I recommed getting Paher's book too.

Keep looking if you want Southern Nevada..........2005-06-06

This volume only cover the northern part of the state. If you want the Las Vegas area, check out volume two. The maps and photos are good.

Two slim volumes. Maps. Some photographs. Adequate, but not much more. For neophytes.

Add another $20 to the purchase price and buy his 1970 hardcover edition, which is incredible.

Good guide.......2006-09-06

This is the companion volume to Paher's Atlas of ghost towns in northern Nevada. Again, there are numerous very good and detailed maps, many excellent if dated photos (they seem to have been largely shot in the 1950s or later, but not recently), and very little text. As such, these atlases are themselves companions to Paher's larger book on ghost towns, and the maps themselves include page references to where to find more information in the larger book on a given town.

Visitors to Vegas expecting to trip all over nearby ghost towns will be disappointed; there are fewer decent and interesting sites in the south than in the north. Still, the interested reader needs both atlases and Paher's full study as well.

Maps of Nevada's southern ghosts .......2006-02-07

Compared to its sister volume, which covers the northern half of the state, this atlas is a disappointment. I've spent quite a bit of time plotting all of the ghost town and mining camp sites from both atlases onto DeLorme topo maps, and felt I was really able to pinpoint sites in the northern book, whereas in this one there just wasn't as detailed enough information to confidently do the same. Distances, for example, were given in the northern book, but are missing here; likewise other identifying features like canyon names and smaller streams. It's still an excellent source, and the two atlases together locate all the sites detailed in Paher's classic NEVADA GHOST TOWNS AND MINING CAMPS. The atlases also contain quite a few photographs.
