Drawing at its best.......2000-08-23

During my recent trip to New York I decided I would visit all the major bookstores and buy myself lots of books about Renaissance drawing. Surely, I thought, sophisticated New York bookstores would have such books in abundance. Here are the results of my arduous researches:

1) There are VERY few books about Renaissance drawing.

2) This book is by far the best of the lot.

Probably Carracci is nobody's favorite artist, and I'm sure I would never have bought this book if I hadn't had the chance to leaf through it first. Photos of preparatory sketches by a not-so-famous painter for $90? Yeah right.

But this book is great. Carracci's paintings may be stiff, but the drawings are definitely not. He was a master of the kind of drawing that just doesn't exist anymore -- elegant, accurate, offhand but truly observed. I don't suppose he was a better draftsman than Titian, say, or Raphael, but this book shows him to be among the real masters.

And the book is a model for what art books should be. It is big but not painful, with pages that are almost square so that the drawings can be shown to their advantage and not run into the gutter. Each drawing is shown compete, but it is the details that make the book. Many are reproduced full-page and in true color, so that the real feel of the paper and touch of the line come across.

Though all the works in this book are by Carracci, it still comes across as a kind of survey course in drawing because this one artist drew in so many ways. Every kind of drawing is here, from the quickest preparatory scribbles to Holbein-like portrait drawings, clearly intended as finished works. The text is of the "This drawing was formerly attributed to Mr. X but now is attributed to Mr. Y" variety, but the text is not why you buy a book like this.

In the end I came home from New York without any books, ordered this one from Amazon, and felt that I had accomplished my mission.

A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2007-03-31

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Though this book has not necessarily come out yet, I happen to have been able to get a bit of a preview. Humphries-Brooks insight into the prominent Christ figure within the face of American film is brilliant. He writes convincingly about these American Jesus movies and, in doing so, makes evident the fact that American cinema has created a Christ figure that has not only influenced the contemporary cinematic narrative, but also has shaped the way American society views Christ. His conclusions are fascinating and important for the continuing study of the changing face of American religion. Read it! It will be an experience, and you will come out much smarter.

In 1639 the Madrid notary Juan GarcÃa de Albertos was appointed Escribano de la ComisiÃ³n de las comedias - official theatre notary. His annual registers of contracts (protocolos) contain more than two thousand items related to actors and theatrical activity from 1634 to 1660. This exceptionally rich collection of documents offers a fascinating overview of theatrical life, in all its diversity, in Madrid and the surrounding area during the age of CalderÃ³n. Especially plentiful are the contracts for performances at festivities in towns and villages, both by professional companies and by local amateurs assisted by individual actresses and musicians hired in Madrid. This extraordinary degree of theatrical activity in even the smallest communities, almost entirely neglected hitherto, forces us to revise and expand our conventional picture of the Spanish Golden Age theatre. The collection also reveals in abundant detail the composition and working practices of acting companies, especially in the numerous asientos (actors' employment contracts), as well as transport conditions, costume hire, staging practices and repertory. One suspects Mitsuaki Iwago is really a penguin in disguise--for it is hard to picture a Homo sapien getting close enough to these birds to get the pictures he does, without donning top hat, white tie, and tails. Where other wildlife photographers keep a respectful distance from their prey, Iwago is on intimate terms with them. There are some very unusual photos in this book as a result--penguins jumping in the ocean like dolphins; parents regurgitating squid and feeding it to their young; a chick in transition to adulthood, much of his chest still covered with dark feathers.

Look through this and imagine what the climate must have been while photographing these animals. Remember that the author didn't just shoot a roll or two of film and head out-this is the result of a great deal of time shooting many, MANY rolls of film in freezing temperatures. The photos are wonderful-I just wish that there had been some informative text on the penguins. Penguin books are not very easy to come by-this one would be a great addition to anybody's library that may be interested in penguins.

Penguins book by Mitsuaki Iwagos, is considered one of the best photo books of these unique animal that live in Antarctica. Mitsuaki Iwagos in my opinion is considered one of the top nature photographers. He shows us the life of penguins in general their way of life children care and protection, and the defense of severe climatic conditions of Antarctica massive assembling which draws the attention and stir your eyes in addition to summarized notes. It is a book that recounts the life of penguins in elegant and eye- catching manner. In addition the photos included in this book gives you clear significance and meaning of life on Antarctica . So I recommend this book for those who love natural photos and Antarctica in general.

Allot a special, private time for yourself with this book! Only by allowing yourself the time to savor each photograph will you go on the special journey Mitsuaki Iwago has in store for you. His play with the contrasts of the light and darks of penguins and and their environment is bliss. I am a penquin afficianado, and was totally thrilled by this sensitive and delightful presentation.
