Architecture and Meaning on the Athenian Acropolis focuses on the architectural complex that is generally considered to be one of the outstanding achievements of Western civilization. Though the buildings and sculpture of the Acropolis, erected over the course of the fifth century B.C., have been scrutinized by scholars for more than a century, Robin Rhodes' sensitive analysis is the first to consider the ensemble as a whole and to explain how the monuments communicate meaningfully with one another to form an iconographic narrative. His study also examines the sculpture and decoration, which were conceived together with the abstract features, while relating both to the larger issues in Greek architecture and aesthetics.

Not only is Professor Rhodes's book far from boring, but rare in that it allows easy access to a scholar's interpretation of Greek architecture. I was lucky enough to have been a student in a few of the Professor's classes. A wonderful read for those expanding their knowledge on Greek architecture, or those just beginning.
Extremely clear, useful study .......2006-04-19
If you are interested in Greek Architecture, this book is great for examining the Athenian Acropolis as a whole, and how the structures function in relation to each other, and to the viewer. Compared to some of the other books on the subject, this book was extremely readable, not to mention informative. To the first reviewer -I actually had Professor Rhodes for a class several years ago, and I have to say I totally disagree with your assessment. I learned volumes from him, and he couldn't have been a nicer person.
Beware Students.......2005-09-27
This book seems to be very well done on the scholarly end, however it is perhaps the driest read of my college career. Our school made it required reading for everyone in the freshman class my freshman year. Three years later it is still on the receiving end of jokes for its obscure and dry reading. The author of the book even came to our school to give an address on his book of which the address is long remembered for its infamous boredom. Perhaps someone with a high interest in Athenian Architecture might find it interesting. However the everyday student is going to be bored out of their mind.

This book is perfect for anyone who is interested in drawing. It helps you t draw anything from the human body to a screaming toddler. I liked the way it gave step by step instructions on how to draw and it gave loads of useful tips like how to use light and shade and how to draw a 3-d box. No redeeming qualities.......2006-05-03
Infrared photography is ripe for somebody to come along and codify it. It's a very confusing subject for a number of reasons. For one, the various infrared films have different sensitivities to infrared. For another, there are no commercially produced infrared meters. Between the two, almost all infrared texts give vague advice on exposure, development, film speed rating, and every other aspect of photography. Very few people are willing to give prescriptive advice.
That said some people produce beautiful images with huge tonal scales and refined highlights, so it must be doable and it keeps aspiring IR photographers searching for a master to reveal the techniques and simplify the form. Todd Damiano is not one of these people.
Every shot in this book has blown highlights and blocked shadows. They look like they were printed on an unmodified inkjet. They are flat and lifeless and the text is fairly generic and not at all specified to the subject. In fact the images are so bad, I went and looked at other images to make sure I wasn't wrong about the possibilities of IR.
Not only would I not buy anything else by this author, I wouldn't by anything else from this press. You can find much better information and examples on the Web.

I was a little disappointed in both the images and text. The author/photographer could have done more with the landscapes he had to work with.

There seems to be little content here. Some nice images, but I didn't learn any how-to from the techniques. This is another guide to lucky dice-rolls with infrared.

Solid Introduction to Economic Indicators, although dated.......2006-05-18
This book is an easy read and it is a great introduction to economic indicators. Unfortunately, it is out of date. It gives a description of what each indicator actually measures, who produces the indicator, and why it is important to the stock, bond, and currency markets.
It is a very quick read (less than a day) and can be used to refresh one's memory on the basic econ indicators.
It also includes an in-depth discussion of how the Fed actually regulates the money supply. This is one of the better introductions to the Fed's operations that I have read.
I recommend quickly reading this book whenever you need a refresher course on the very basics of what to look for in economic indicators, especially with respect to how they affect the markets.

A Great And Easy Reference Guide.......2000-05-13
I first purchased this book about 10 years ago and have done so about once a year since then. It is of great help for those just fresh from the university and to the seasoned financial guru. When data has been made public from the FED, this book helps one to diagnose and better comprehend those economic figures.

This book has its origin in a resolution adopted by the Assembly of the League of Nations in September 1930 by which it was decided that an attempt should be made to co-ordinate the analytical work then being done on the problem of the recurrence of periods of economic depression. This book is divided into two parts. The first part contains a systematic analysis of existing theories; the second an attempt to weave from those theories a general synthesis.
Dr. G. von Haberler, born 1900, studied economics and law at the Universities of Vienna and Bonn, obtained a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1928, and was later a Professor at the University of Vienna, and at the time of original publication of this study by the League of Nations in 1937 was Assistant Professor at Harvard University. From 1934-1936 he was a member of the Economic Intelligence Service of the League of Nations.

Old, Out-dated book.......2002-05-31
This book may have been good once, but now it is out-dated and can even be embarrassing for people to learn from and use at work. The author has written new books which I bought and like much more. They are easier to use, and include more commonly used expressions. I do not reccommend this old book.

From the author: The value of riparian habitats to birds differs among ecosystems. I tested whether riparian habitat near large streams and rivers in the Pacific Northwest supported a higher abundance and diversity of birds than adjacent upland forest. From 1996 to 1998, I surveyed breeding birds at four 9-ha sites in coastal western hemlock forest on western Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Five species of forest generalists dominated both riparian and upland bird communities: Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus), and Pacific-slope Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis). Species richness and total abundance were similar over the riparian-to-upland gradient, whereas abundances of riparian specialists and aerial foragers declined with distance from the river. To explore whether vegetation composition and structure explained bird distribution patterns, I sampled three locations along both riparian and upland transects at each site. Riparian areas had higher densities of deciduous trees; conifer and snag densities were higher in upland areas. Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) cover was marginally higher in riparian areas and blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) cover was higher in upland areas. There was little effect of distance from the river on most bird species, but there were stronger associations of birds with specific vegetation attributes. Tree and snag densities explained the most variation in abundance of aerial foragers, and eight of nine individual species, whereas distance from the river and shrub cover were important predictors of Hammond's Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii) abundance. Apart from riparian specialists and a few species with strong vegetation associations, bird assemblages in riparian and upland habitats of this moist forest type were dominated by similar sets of generalist species.
