Book Description

In this magnificently illustrated and comprehensive book, readers will take one of the most beautiful journeys our world has to offer: an exploration of the greatest are and architecture of Western civilization. Art of the Western World -- the companion volume to the nine-part PBS television series -- traces the history of Western art from its classical roots in ancient Greece up to the present day and the international Post-Modernism of artists as diverse as Christo, Hockney, and Kiefer. Along the way experts Bruce Cole and Adelheid Gealt carefully chart the evolution of the Western tradition, from the grandeur of Roman architecture to the symbolic language of medieval art, through the unparalleled achievements of the Renaissance, the turbulent emotionalism of the Romantics like Turner and Constable, the Impressionists' search for a new reality, and the revolution of the Abstract Expressionists of the twentieth century.

Art of the Western World integrates the works of each period with the history, values, and ideals that gave birth to them: the influence of the Medicis and other great patrons of Renaissance Italy; the resurgence of the classical style, inspired by the French Revolution; the break with the past evidenced in the works of the Impressionists; and the tortured visions of the modern world devastated by wars depicted in the paintings of Picasso, Marc, Groez, and others.

A valuable key to understanding the language of art, Art of the Western World offers fresh insight into what the great works meant at the time they were created and why they maintain their special meaning to us now. It is the perfect guide to the masterpieces of Western art.

5 out of 5 stars Great for DANTES.......2007-09-19

I studied this book, watched the 8 associated videos and reviewed with WNET: 'Art of the Western World' study guide and only missed 7 questions on the DANTES/DSST test.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to history of art in the Western World.......2007-09-06

Book provides good introduction to history of art in Western World by time period. Does a particulary good job at showing how styles evolved and changed over time.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for art's sake..........2003-05-18

Art of the Western World, from Ancient Greece to Post-Modernist art, is covered admirably in this companion volume to the PBS series of the same name. Perhaps one of the reasons I find this book so interesting is that I have met the authors, as Bruce Cole and Adelheid Gealt are both part of the Art programmes here at Indiana University, and the book is dedicated to Herman Wells, recently deceased, but powerful administrator who built in his 50 years of work with the university an Ivy-League-like atmosphere and, for many departments and schools, reputation.

The text is beautifully illustrated, with full-colour plates and glossy photographs of paintings, sculpture, stained glass, furniture, jewelry and architecture on every page. This is also a comprehensive volume of Western art - chapters include the art of Greece, Rome, Christian Art (including a special chapter devoted to cathedrals), Renaissance art (with special chapters on Italian and Dutch art), eighteenth and nineteenth century art, and then several chapters on modern artistic movements from Impressionism forward.

This book is clear in writing and procedure - it avoids technical jargon whenever possible, and is good at explaining the necessary elements to increase appreciation of the art being shown. Often, a true appreciation of art requires a knowledge of the history and culture of the artists, and this volume provides some of the background to fill in the historical gaps.

`Our art is part of us; in it flows the spiritual and intellectual lifeblood which still nourishes and sustains our ancient civilisation. It is also a living, redemptive force in an age that has witnessed the madness and destruction which is also, unfortunately, our Western heritage. Art can embody and transcend both its creators and its times to reveal enduring truths about the human condition; the more we understand art, the more we understand ourselves and the complexities of our world.'

The volume features an introductory essay by Michael Wood, who served as the on-screen narrator of the PBS television series. Wood, a journalist, historian and filmmaker, is also author of the best-selling In Search of the Trojan War. In this essay, Wood argues that the tradition of Western art is not simply a tradition, but a series of complementary traditions that cross-pollinate with cultural, religious, and aesthetic differences. The flows toward and away from realism over time can often be explained in cultural-influence terms as well as aesthetic terms. He also asks the question, `Whither the future for Western art?'

`There are more working artists and more consumers of art than ever before. As a business, art is booming. But it is plain now, with the spread of an electronic global culture, that we face the prospect of the erosion of all differences, the prospect of great conformity and simplification.... Now, with modernism, the West has become a state of mind, rather than a geographical region, and is perceived as such by other cultures-Islam, Africa, India, and the rest-who have felt its often destructive impact.'

This is a fair warning, but this book by no means belittles the achievements and influence of Western art - it celebrates it gloriously, and looks forward to continuing developments and achievements, as the future may hold yet more creation and originality - while the West influences the rest of the world, the rest of the world is influencing the West, which throughout history has shown itself particularly susceptible to original influences from out.

5 out of 5 stars Great prep book for Dantes test.......2002-12-10

This book provided ALL the information I needed to cut a high score on the Art of the Western World Dantes Exam. *Tip: Study the periods and the artists' influences, don't worry about identifying paintings* Excellent structure and well researched historical data made this book a pleasure to read. Recommended for novice art buffs looking to expound their knowledge of Art progression through the centuries and periods.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Dantes test study material.......2000-04-13

Although I must admit at times this book does get dry, it does cover the needed material to pass the Dantes test for this subject. All pictures that are reference in the test are located in this book and it covers the material well. Be prepared to sudy hard with this one, as it does take some time to digest the material. It is easy to read and enables anyone to pass a test that normally only has a 38% pass rate. I got an "A", my wife got a high "B".

                    Book Description

1,200 high-quality color images of landscape and garden elements, in print and on CD-ROM (runs on Windows and Macintosh platforms). Third in the Surfaces series, this collection of photographs catalogs elements of the natural world: trees, shrubs, flowers, foliage, grass, fruits and vegetables, stone and sand, water and sky. The photographs catalog images of nature used in art and design, with detailed views of natural elements, plant portraits, and pictures of landscape installations, gardens, and scenic vistas. Horticultural pictures are captioned as to botanical and common names. Images are coded and cross-referenced in the index and on the CD-ROM, making the book a compact picture file for illustrators, landscape architects, designers, and graphic artists. With an illustrated glossary, resource sections, and interviews with professionals in landscape design and botanical illustration, this is a great book for students.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource Book.......2007-01-05

I bought this book as a resource for Theatre Design and it has proven to be a valuable asset. I can look through the photos in the book while researching and use the CD to put together presentations. The book's overall content is wide ranging and detailed, and is organized well. I would recommend this book to anyone in the arts, even if you don't use it for research, it's cool to look though.

5 out of 5 stars Once again... Amazing.......2005-08-19

This book is one of the best references for any designer and painter in the industry. Color Photos are amazing and complete. I have been wanting to purchase it for years now and am very glad to add it to my collection. All of her books are worth having in any artists library.

                        Book Description

Knowledge Management was heralded as the tool that would enable companies to pool the information contained in individual employees' heads. What it became was an expensive database that no one ever used. It failed because it didn't address the needs of managers or take account of the human element in passing information from one point to another.

This report, based on two major research projects, bridges the gap between knowledge management theory and practice, between the apparent potential and deliverable reality, between communication and conviction. As the report identifies, the key is for the developers of knowledge solutions to directly identify with the needs of their business users, rather than attempting to 'convert' them.

                          Book Description

This book explores new approaches to the measurement and interpretation of the linkages between economic activity flows and income flows in urban and regional economies and new ways to explore the importance of regional economic structure in development. The book combines theoretical contributions, chapters that focus on the construction and interpretation of new social accounting systems and a variety of empirical applications. These applications encompass community-level income distribution impacts, assessments of income distribution problems in Brazil, interregional impacts of unexpected events in Japan, welfare reform in the US and structural change in Chinese metropolitan economies. One of the special features of the book is the use and application of a wide variety of models - demo-economic, social accounting, interregional computable general equilibrium - employed at a variety of spatial scales.

5 out of 5 stars Mother & Daughter thinking the same.......2001-12-01

Two Christmas's ago I decided to buy and complete this book for my daughter. She was my rock during my divorce and seperation and I wanted to do something special for her. It took me months to complete it and I laughed at the cute and funny graphics that lie within this book. On Christmas Day she came in the house with her gifts for me and while she was putting them under the tree I noticed one shaped the same as mine for her.I asked what color is yours? She said, "Pink" and I said mine is Blue. We had both bought this book for each other. She had found an older version of it which had a pink gingham cover and I this version. Both were fitting to the style of lives we lead. We sat to read them together and laughed and cried. I was so touched that I had made such an impression on her and in her words I was her inspiration. Who would have thought. This book was a bridge between a mother and daughter during the roughest time of their lives.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-03-17

I bought this book thinking it was a memory book directed to a mother with a young daughter. I wanted to use it to continue my daughter's baby book memories now that she is past that stage. Unfortunately for me, this book is geared toward a mother and an adult daughter. Each person writes in the book sharing their own memories. I think if that is what you are looking for, than this is a great book. It has lovely illustrations and lots of different topics to write about.

When I first saw this book at the bookstore, I knew I had to get it for my mom's birthday. I am busy getting all the pictures and memories together, but am a little confused as to how to fill it out. Should I just fill out the parts about me (the daughter) and give it to her unfinished, or should I try and complete the whole book? I thought about writing my parts in a different color ink and giving my mom another color pen for her part. Does anyone have any suggestions about this? I have really enjoyed thinking over all the wonderful times we have spent together and have spent hours picking just the right photos. I will take the suggestion of having laser copies made of the photos so they fit exactly right. What a great idea. I am looking forward to ordering some of the other books as well.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful making and giving this keepsake!.......1999-07-08

My daughter is planning a wedding in August and back in February a friend introduced me to this book. At the time I thought what a wonderful gift it would be for her so I ordered it and busily went about the task of collecting the right pictures. I had laser copies made of the pictures I used and it worked out very well as I could enlarge or decrease them to the size I needed to fit in the spaces. The people at the printing store where I had the copies made loved the book and were very interested in helping with the project. They both ended up ordering copies of the book for themselves. After it was finished I couldn't wait to give it to her right then but resisted the temptation and gave it to her as one of her shower gifts at a later time. Needless to say, she loved it and after reading the other titles in the back of the book has just ordered the "Hot Little Book About Us" to give her future husband as part of her wedding gift to him. I think that is a great recomendation as to how she felt about receiving the book! The author added just the right amount of humor to keep it from becomming too "heavy" and it turned out to be a wonderful experience for me. I am so happy that I found this unique way to record some of my memories and convey these special feelings to her and also give her a memento that she can cherish for years to come.

                                    Book Description

Field Marshal Viscount Garnet Joseph Wolseley, born to a well-heeled Dublin family, was assigned in 1861 to service with the British army in Canada. Here he became engrossed by the mounting conflict in the United States and eventually decided to take two months' leave in order to observe the situation firsthand. His writings on the Civil War provide a fascinating and little presented perspective on America's bloodiest conflict. Editor James Rawley's introductions to each of the book's four pieces (as well as his lengthy one at the beginning of the book) provide the necessary context for a modern reading of Wolseley's essays. Rawley's new preface to this edition revisits Wolseley's writings in the light of the past thirty-five years of Civil War scholarship.

                                            Book Description

Here is a tightly written, concise survey of the history of technology and science over four centuries. In constructing this engaging account, Professor Brose weaves a fabric from three histories which, until now, have been thought of as mutually exclusive. The history of technology, the history of science, and the history of economic development leading to the Industrial Revolution have been developed to a large degree separately. Few historians have attempted a synthesis such as this which demonstrates the relationship between them and general political developments in a way which produces a rounded account, with each strand playing its part in supporting and interacting with the others.

The narrative starts with the opening of the modern historical epoch around 1500 and ends with the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and covers events in both Europe and the United States. Brose constructs his account from the standpoint of technological systems--the idea that each epoch evolves a system to meet the material demands of society--and the rise and fall of each system within the period.

This is a fine introductory overview of the interrelationship between science and technology and society in the early modern and modern periods and the impact of each upon the other.
