Accomplished artist and photographer Gary Greene has collected a comprehensive gallery of color photographs of barns, houses, buildings, churches, bridges, and other landmarks and architectural details in Artist's Photo Reference: Buildings & Barns. The intense, rich saturation of the structures is captured in bright natural light and through views designed to work within and complement landscape composition. The book, which forms a unique pictorial record of a vanishing America, is flush with variations on general themes, such as classical revival, Tudor, and southwestern in the "Houses" section. Each reference section contains a complete step-by-step demonstration by contributing artists employing various media, such as a pastel composition of a stately white farmhouse set between a dreamy blue April sky and riotous red and yellow tulips, or an imposing Victorian mansion whose complex architectural details are precisely delineated in ink, watercolor, and colored pencil. Greene also describes how to go into the field and make your own reference photos without spending a great deal of money. This book will appeal to artists who enjoy painting and drawing rural scenes or who wish to infuse a bit of idealistic realism into their landscape compositions. --Mary Ribesky

Customer Reviews:
Very good book to have if you're an artist.......2007-06-05
I have almost all of the photo reference picture books with the exception of Boats and Nautical scenes. I consider this book a very good one, because it gives you a wide variety of subjects to choose from, arranged in groups. For example, he will have photos of weathered barns, of houses of different periods, etc. Browsing through the photo reference books I'm sure of finding something that will inspire me. The advantage of these photos is that they were taken by an artist, with artists in mind and that makes a big difference when using them as subjects for a work of art.
Great Artists Visual Reference.......2004-09-10
Artist's Photo reference is a compilation of over 400 photos of architecture from barns to wharves which artists can use for painting or other graphic illustration. Included are 6 painting demos and examples of techniques to use when creating your very own masterpiece. I particularly liked it that the author addresses copyright issues and how to make photo collages to create your own graphic aids. This is a must for artists who like to use photos for more photo-realistic paintings and who do not have access to their subjects.
If you like this one, make sure to check out the other books in the series: Artist's Photo Reference: Birds, Artist's Photo Reference: Flowers, and Artist Photo REference: Landscapes.

For the first time carver.......1999-08-08
I think for the first time carver these books are the best to follow you through with the patterns the size of the wood and shape of the bird and what ever.
Mostly a book of patterns.......1999-06-28
If you are looking for an inexpensive book of just patterns, this will meet your needs. However the carving instructions are minimalist and there are no painting instructions. There is one color picture of each bird included.

Book Description
In the Land of Orpheus provides a rich ethnographic description of village life and conservation efforts in an ecologically important region of one of the most biologically diverse countries in Europe. Barbara Cellarius describes natural resource use and economic survival strategies in a rural Rhodope Mountain village and the ways in which the lives of residents of a rural community are affected by outside forces, particularly the economic and political uncertainties that have plagued Bulgaria since the collapse of communism. She examines larger forces, including environmental nongovernmental organizations, interested in linking global conservation priorities with local communities.

Corp. Greed And Disfunctional Management.......2002-09-01
This book saw it coming. It was well ahead of it's time. Hundreds of my fellow employess were able to avoid the recent corporate incompetence and mismanagement by implementing the cultural changes detailed in the book. A must read to adapt to the new business ethics for running a sucessful company.
Trak Da Prey Or U R Da Prey.......2001-01-09
Have fun reading this book while you learn where your sales organization can avoid the pitfalls of growth. The authors write in a style that is fun, yet makes very important points about how to make a business successful. I have used this book with my small business clients to show them how to anticipate problems that inevitably arise as their business grows. This book had a great deal of credibility with me, because I have seen clients go through exactly the successes and problems that are described.
It's a quick read, yet every chapter points out ways that we can either be successful or not successful, depending upon the decisions we make. The authors cover the functions at just about every management level, so no matter where you stand in the hieracrchy, you will benefit by reading the book.
I'd recommend this to both large and small busineses. For the small business, there is important information here whether you are just starting up, or are experiencing the inevitable pain of growth. Large organizations will recognize themselves also, and will benefit from the tips provided about how to manage your culture to be more effective.

Putting His Heart Into It.......2002-11-15
Not another sucker how-to book, this is a delightfully literate memoir of a smart man's journey to develope and market his own gadget, a hand held ozone sniffing device called Eco-Sensor. Guided by his father's example and supported by his loyal wife, Kilham forged bravely past the snapping jaws of a dropping market, fickle financing, parts shortages and personnel problems like security guard Lila's exciting gender transformation. Not just an inventor, Kilham created a highly satisfying business to manufacture and sell his product. He tells a delightful family history along the way.
"Great Idea" won't sell you any tapes and it doesn't flog his product, Eco-Sensor, because that's not his mission. Ever his father's son, Kilham wants to encourage us to be true to ourselves, to keep on through failure and to always, always reach for excellence. You don't have to be an engineer or even a business person to love this book. I could hardly put it down.
A new bible for entrepreneurs.......2002-01-29
This book is full of wonderful examples of things for the entrepreneur to expect and beware of. I ususally circle a few such key passages in the text of any book, and jot the page numbers inside the cover. I ran out of room to write page numbers!
A must for reading.......2001-11-24
This is a book written in language that can be understood for all levels by an author who has had the hands on experience it takes to get an idea off the ground. It has definately impacted my thoughts in planning my future process for my company. Highly recommended
Book Description
Modern armies are planned and structured to fight massive World War II-type operations involving the large-scale movements of tanks and machinery across continents. In fact they are rarely called upon to participate in such conflicts. It is far more common for them to find themselves involved in lower-level, ill-defined, politically charged, messy situations known collectively as "unconventional warfare", typified by the 1990s conflicts in Somalia, Haiti, Rwanda, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Thomas Adams argues that, for the most part, the conventional war-fighting forces of the USA are not the best military forces to deal with such situations, where there is a lack of a clearly-defined enemy and a need for persuasion, negotiation and even community leadership alongside elements who are willing to resort to deadly force. The appropriate components of the US miltary to deal with this, in his view, are the Special Operations Forces (SOF). He discusses the composition of the SOF and their varying roles, discussing their evoluation, strengths and weaknesses, and gives a history of US involvement in non-conventional warfare from the American revolution to the 1990s. He argues that the US Department of Defense still sees military conflict in the form of conventional warfare, with its emphasis on high-technology combat. The very existence of high-technology systems, however, makes conventional warfare less likely, with the result that the US Army may become vulnerable to "low-tech" offensives, and already there has been an increase in "unconventional" conflicts since the demise of the Soviet Union.
Adams proposes a change in strategic thinking together with investment in training and a usable military doctrine to guide develoment. A shift in expectations is required, with a greater willingness to accept lengthy commitments and incremental progress.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding Special Operations.......2001-04-10
I really enjoyed this book since it is a real departure from the usual collection of "there I was, ankle deep in hot brass" stories that characterize writing on special operations. It has some of that, but in the main this is a thoughtful look at the evolving nature, purpose and application of America's "secret warriors." The author's real focus is the underlying philosophy of special operations and the way that they fit (or compete) with more conventional military methods. This is a unique book, recommended for anyone whose interest in the topic goes beyond the "gee-whiz" level.
A bit too detailed of a summary..........2000-06-29
Although I think this is a good book, I thought the emphasis on logistical descriptions was too severe. I had to struggle through portions on unit descriptions that were a myriad acronyms and batallion numbers. The antecdotal descriptions of special forces events are far better served by topic specific novels. For example, "Black Hawk Down" by M. Bowden did a much better job of setting the ferocity and importance of the events in Somalia, as well as a better description of the special forces involved, even though that was secondary to the plot. I learned more about the SEALS from reading Marcinko's non-fiction Rogue Warrior novel than I felt I digested from this book. I also thought the author was too focused on Psychological Ops., whose role as a special force, is well, boring. In sum, although a sterling account on the descriptions of the special forces units and their specific goals, the lack of real-event development, such as Stephen Ambrose makes this a hard book to finish.
A revealing, entertaining, hard-headed look at Special Ops.......1998-10-08
The is probably the best book of its type available to the general public. It is based on a lifetime of association with the field and it has its quota of war stories, but most of it is a merciless look at the capabilities, merits and demerits of US elite forces. I am a retired special ops officer and, even if I don't agree with all the opinions expressed, the facts are straight. It contains the kind of material normally reserved for classified briefings. This book is unhestitatinly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.

One of the few useful books on the subject.......2005-02-12
Good period overview that shows that neither the "Polish" nor the "Jews" were a homogeneous group - some from both parties collaborated with the Soviets and later the Nazis. Sheds a light on the plight of Polish patriots, and then the Polish Jewish patriots under the Soviet rule - their deportation to the Gulag system, the formation of Guzari, etc.
LPB
tells the truth.......2003-12-22
About time that we got scholars studying a little known fact, namely that SOME Jews willingly collaborated with the Soviets during their first, and second occupation of eastern Poland (or western Ukraine), and, in that capacity, were willing accomplices in Soviet war crimes and crimes against humanity. Not surprisingly, when the Nazis came, after June 22 1941, many Jews (including innocents) became the victims of revenge killings by locals who have suffered under communist rule. Let's not forget that those who sometimes portray their community as only being victims are forgetting, knowingly or otherwise, that some of their people were pro-communist killers.

Observable birds with many mysteries.......2005-03-30
Shorebirds are one of the most observable of birds, but also one where identification is a challenge and many mysteries remain. Peter Matthiessen engrossingly tells the life history of many of the North American species, including segmentation of habitat during the seasons, and wonders of migration. Along the way he introduces ecological principles as Bergman's Rule and evolutionary ideas of speciation (how did Western and Semipalmated sandpipers separate?).
Since the initial publishing of this book and the forward (in 1994), the optimism of recovery of species may be diminished, as many are declining. The illustrations are all well done, and Matthiessen introduces each chapter with literary quotes, such as Shakespeare's "sometimes I'll get the young scamels (bar-tailed godwit) from the rock". Readers of this would probably enjoy " The Flight of the Red Knot" by Brian Harrington and Charles Flowers.
compendium of amazing facts.......2003-07-26
What makes this book difficult is that the author assumes a certain foreknowledge of the 20 or more species of shorebirds discussed. This makes is a bit like reading a text on anatomy without having any background. But even without, it is relatively easy reading once you get into it and just a cursory exsmination reveals some amazing facts and a great wealth of knowledge on the author's part: he will tell you why, for example, mammals are larger in the north and why chicken breast meat is white. There is also a wealth of data on the taxonomy, evolution, migration patterns--which are quite amazing--and other habits of numerous shorebirds, as well as the hunting to near extinction of some of them in the early 20th century and before. The author brings to his work a lifetime of world travel, also.
Beauty, truth, and feathers........2000-02-16
Now here is a beautifully written and true book about the tribes of shorebirds (plovers, sandpipers, and their kin). In a series of essays on the different aspects of bird structure and behavior (e.g., migration, flight, feeding, courtship), the author draws a complete picture of these wondrous birds. If you've ever stood on a beach and watched flocks of Sanderlings wheeling in unison, flashing alternately white and gray, and wondered about how they live their lives, then this is the book for you. Matthiessen is almost the only writer I know who can combine accurate science with a consistently interesting and limpid style.
